Abstract: Over the past twenty years, DNA ancestry testing has morphed from a niche market into a booming international industry that encourages members of the public to answer difficult questions about their identity by looking to the genome. At a time of intensified interest in issues of race and racism, the burgeoning influence of corporations like AncestryDNA and 23andMe has sparked debates about the commodification of identity, the antiracist potential of genetic science, and the promises and pitfalls of using DNA as a source of 'objective' knowledge about the past. This book engages these debates by looking at the ways genomic ancestry testing has been used in Brazil and the United States to address the histories and legacies of slavery, from personal genealogical projects to collective racial politics.

Abstract: "This book brings together ethnographic field research on four permacultural ecovillages in Brazil to highlight the importance of spirituality and ecological epistemologies as key analytical tools. It demonstrates that ecological spirituality can, and should, be understood beyond the dichotomy of personal and political, between people and nature, in the field of environmental anthropology. The book uses a broad philosophical methodology based on the phenomenological theories of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Tim Ingold, and Alfred Schutz combined with post-structuralist conceptions of the relationship between person and world, individual and society. The field research consisted of ethnographic travel, observation and recorded dialogue with individuals based in each ecovillage: Arca Verde, situated in Campos de Cima da Serra; Vrinda Bhumi, a Vaishnava ecovillage in Baependi-MG; Goura Vrindavana, a Vaishnava ecovillage in Paraty-RJ; and Muriqui Assu Ecovillage Project, a secular ecovillage in Niterói-RJ. Throughout the book ethnographic research is woven together with poetic interludes, images, personal narrative experience and phenomenological theory, bringing a new understanding and approach to environmental anthropology as a discipline. Including a Preface written by Tim Ingold, it will appeal to academics, researchers, and upper-level students in phenomenology, environmental philosophy, environmental anthropology, religious studies and social sciences more broadly"--

Abstract: After a period of authoritarian regime like those in Latin America during the 70's and 80's, a transition to democracy usually raises questions such as 'Who will be held accountable?', and 'Who deserves reparations?'. At the same time, in the foreground of the debate is the threat to the stability of the regime: 'How can we balance competing moral imperatives, reconcile legitimate claims for justice with equally legitimate claims for stability and social peace, and foster the relationship between justice for crimes of the past and a democratic order?'...

Abstract: "This book argues for the study of consumption and its relationship with media images, particularly advertising, from a cultural perspective. Focused on Brazil, it draws on decades of research by the author and engages with theory and concepts from a range of classic anthropological works. The chapters examine how advertising professionals view their craft, the resistance to capitalism amongst native Brazilians, images of women and their bodies in magazines, and the case of the first soccer player to become a national media celebrity. Rocha supports the study of consumption as a classification system that materializes culture and creates relations between people and goods. The book presents advertising as a mode of magical thinking that mediates the passage from the machine-driven sphere of production to the humanized sphere of consumption, converting meaningless impersonal things into goods that have name, origin, identity and purpose. It will be of interest to anthropologists, sociologists and others working on advertising, marketing, communications, and consumer research.

Abstract: Whether invented, discovered, implicit, or directly addressed, relations remain the main focus of most anthropological inquiries. These relations, once conceptualized in ethnographic fieldwork as self-evident connections between discrete social units, have been increasingly explored through local ontological theories. This collected volume explores how ethnographies of indigenous South America have helped to inspire this analytic shift, demonstrating the continued importance of ethnographic diversity. Most importantly, this volume asserts that comparative ethnographic research can help illustrate complex questions surrounding relations vis-à-vis the homogenizing effects of modern coloniality.

Abstract: "Fascism in Brazil analyzes the long and varied history of the Brazilian extreme right. The book examines Integralism, the main historical Brazilian fascist ideology represented by Brazilian Integralist Action, the largest fascist movement outside Europe. It analyzes the Integralist tradition from its founding in 1932 to the present day. It examines how Brazilian Integralist Action began with its leader Plínio Salgado's trip to Fascist Italy, and how the Popular Representation Party developed Integralism in the postwar era. The book also explores the support of Integralists for the 1964 military coup and the role of Integralists in the dictatorship. The contemporary extreme right in Brazil is still inspired by the Integralist slogans of the 1930s as they seek to find political space and to demonstrate their strength. Contemporary turning points in neo-Integralism were the involvement of neo-fascist groups, including neo-Integralists, in the upheavals that culminated in the election of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, as well as in the attack on the headquarters of comedy group Porta dos Fundos in Rio de Janeiro in 2019. This book will be of interest to students and scholars researching comparative fascist studies, the history of the far right, and Brazilian and Latin American history and politics"--...

Abstract: Wie trotzen Rio de Janeiros selbstgebaute Favelas ihrer Verbannung aus der offiziellen Stadt?

Abstract: Roger Bastide war ein Grenzgänger zwischen Kontinenten und Kulturen.

Abstract: "The Things of Others: Ethnographies, Histories, and Other Artefacts deals with the things mainly, but not only, mobilized by anthropologists in order to produce knowledge about the African American, the Afro-Brazilian and the Afro-Cuban during the 1930s. However, the book's goal is not to dig up evidence of the creation of an epistemology of knowledge and its transnational connections. The research on which this book is based suggests that the artefacts created in fieldwork, offices, libraries, laboratories, museums, and other places and experiences - beyond the important fact that these places and situations involved actors other than the anthropologists themselves - have been different things during their troubled existence. The book seeks to make these differences apparent, highlighting rather than concealing the relationships between partial modes of making and being 'Afro' as a subject of science. If the artefacts created in a variety of situations have been different things, we should ask what sort of things they were and how the actors involved in their creation sought to make them meaningful. The book foregrounds these discontinuous and ever-changing contours"--

Abstract: "In the city of Natal in northeast Brazil, several local women negotiate the terms of their intimate relationships with foreign tourists, or gringos, in a situation often referred to as "sex tourism." These women each have different experiences, but they all share in the desire to "escape" their lives as young, poor, racialized women in Brazil. Based on original ethnographic research and presented in graphic form, Gringo Love explores the hopes, dreams, and experiences of these women against a backdrop of entrenched social inequality and increasing state surveillance leading up to the World Cup of 2014. It touches on important contemporary scholarly issues, including sexual economics, transnational mobility, transnational love and relationships, romantic imaginaries, gender representation, race and inequality, visual anthropology, and ethnographic methods. The graphic story is accompanied by analysis and contextual discussions, which encourage students to engage with the narrative and expand their understanding of the broader social issues therein. "--

Abstract: In ganz Brasilien leben die mehrere Minderheiten umfassenden Calen.

Somit wurden30 Mütter in verschiedenen sozialen Schichten interviewt..
Abstract: This thesis is a contribution to research on gendered habitus. Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, particularly the concepts of habitus and male domination, I explored women’s normalization of gender inequality and its distinct manifestations in every social class in contemporary Brazil. The aspects of female identity that relate to feelings of weakness are transmitted in a naturalized form within a woman’s social class and through informal education. The focus of this research is the possibility that women can transfer aspects of their identity through social practice on a daily social practices and that the way to being a woman in a lower class, for example, is unlike being a woman in upper class in Brazil. I drew on Souza’s (2011) work on social inequality in Brazil to develop my methodology and interviewed 30 mothers from different social classes. This research observed the interactions between mothers and daughters in their homes. I found that the informal education approaches of the mothers interviewed varied across social class. The discourse of mothers from the Ralé (marginalized class) differed from the discourse of mothers from the upper class. In chapter six, I describe this class division in detail. I explored how mothers inscribe the identities of what it means “to be woman”, including perceptions of their physical capabilities, compensatory behaviors to combat feelings of vulnerability and weakness, and future prospects. I found different concepts of “womanhood” in my research. Some women had acquired an understanding of their bodies as relatively weak and vulnerable through strongly gendered habitus. Most of the women in each social class had an understanding of their role within society - even if it was subconscious, perceptible only through actions and statements.

Abstract: "This book uses the Afro-Brazilian art of capoeira to examine how security has been pursued from below and what significance this has for security analysis and policy. The book brings the musical and corporeal narrative from capoeira into conversation with debates on security; these have typically been dominated by northern, white, military voices, and as a result, the perspective of the weaker player is routinely overlooked in security literature and policy making. Bringing the perspective of the weaker party, Cultural Resistance and Security from Below examines the distribution of security from two angles. First, it presents the history of the interaction between capoeira players and the Brazilian society and state that resulted in political and legal acceptance of capoeira. Secondly, it explores how the practice of capoeira generates knowledge of identities, explanations and values, and how this knowledge empowers communities of players and is communicated to society more broadly. The book then turns to consider how capoeira resists within Brazil's contemporary context of insecurity, and what significance the knowledge and power, along with capoeira's core move of escape, have to security analysis and policy. The book concludes by taking the lessons from capoeira to inform understanding of other cultural activities and ways of life as potential sites and forms of resistance. Conceptually and methodologically original, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of security studies, development studies, political science and international studies"--

Abstract: In ganz Brasilien leben die mehrere Minderheiten umfassenden Calen.

Abstract: "Moving Difference demonstrates how differences between migrants who share the same nationality travel with them and can impact on every aspect of their 'mobile lives'. Analysing the lived experiences and narratives of Brazilians in London, it adds an in-depth ethnographic understanding of the specific contours of difference to studies of migration by demonstrating how social differences, rooted in colonial legacies, are constantly being re-created and negotiated in the everyday making of the global world. By using ethnographic observations and in-depth interviews, in addition to historical and contextual analyses, the book allows us to understand how people speak of, engage with and negotiate difference in their everyday lives and how this is shaped by the macro political and social contexts of immigration and emigration. Giving attention to the complex interrelations between 'here' and 'there', past and present, Moving Difference allows us to go beyond the proliferated homogenised stereotypes of 'the migrant' and 'the migrant community' often reproduced by academics as well as by the media and politicians whether with a view to pathologizing or romanticizing the 'migrant other'. This title will appeal to students, scholars, community workers and general readers interested in migration, social class, gender, 'race' and ethnicity, colonialism and slavery, social exclusion, globalisation and urban sociology"--

Abstract: This book explores the proliferation and spread of Brazilian-born religious forms and practices throughout the world. The global diffusion of Brazilian religions provides an excellent lens to understand contemporary religious forms. As the book shows, religious movements as diverse as Santo Daime, Candomblé, Capoeira, John of God, and Brazilian style Pentecostalism and Catholicism, have become immensely popular in many places outside Brazil. This global spread is not merely the result of Brazilian migrants taking their religions abroad, it is also due to global media and to spiritual seekers, travelling to and from Brazil. Global Trajectories of Brazilian Religion demonstrates that in a dynamic space of historical and cultural production, Brazil is imagined and re-created as an authentic, spiritual, and sensualplace that functions as the center for various global religions. To understand the new cross-fertilizations between religion, life-style, tourism and migration, this book introduces the notion of 'Lusospheres', a term that refers to the historical Portuguese colonial reach, yet signals the contemporary modes of cultural interaction in a different geo-political age

Abstract: The core of this book derives from a seminal dissertation research about the New Age movement in Brazil conducted back in the mid-1990s. The topical scholarship was relatively thin, reflecting the novelty of the phe-nomenon and a certain academic lag to engage with unestablished phenomena

Abstract: Brazil on the Main is a research trip that explores the country of Brazil based of its migrants to Frankfurt. Amalia Barboza develops an intercultural, performative and relational approach between sociology and artistic research

Abstract: Why do governance reforms in developing democracies so often fail, and when might they succeed? When Democracies Deliver offers a dynamic framework for assessing the effectiveness and durability of policy change. Drawing on detailed analyses of public sector reforms in Brazil and Argentina, this book challenges conventional wisdom to reveal that incremental changes sequenced over time prove more effective in promoting accountability, increasing transparency, and strengthening institutions than comprehensive overhauls pushed through by political will. Developing an innovative theory that integrates cognitive-psychological insights about decision making with research on institutional change, Katherine Bersch shows how political and organizational factors can shape reform strategies and information processing. Through extensive interviews and field research, Bersch traces how two competing strategies have determined the different trajectories of institutions responsible for government contracting in health care and transportation. When Democracies Deliver offers a fresh insight on the perils of powering and the benefits of gradual reform

Abstract: Architektur als sozialer Interaktionsraum.
Abstract: Arquitetura como Espaço de Interação Social.
Abstract: Architecture as a Space for Social Interaction. The Centro Cultural São Paulo 1975‒1982. Architecture is part of the symbolism of society. As a design discipline, it requires spatial realization and appropriation by its users. At the same time the built form has its own social influence on the activities within the space. This doctoral thesis investigates the dual character of architecture using the example of the Centro Cultural São Paulo during its period of development. The building, which was initially planned as a new central library for São Paulo was conceptualized and planned by the architects Eurico Prado Lopes along with Luiz Benedito de Castro Telles between 1975 and 1982. The dissertation is supported by two primary arguments that explore the dual nature of the research-led question: how the Centro Cultural São Paulo is a product of the social space of the sixties and seventies and how its architecture influences the social practice of using the building. The first line of argument examines the social space under the tension of the Brazilian military dictatorship in São Paulo from 1964 to 1985. This reveals the political dependencies and boundaries within which architecture, as a design discipline, moves. The second line of argument uses the cultural centre's built form to study the social practice of architecture. The architectural concept of an Inner Street embodies the idea of interaction between activities, users and space. Methodically, this dissertation pursues an interdisciplinary approach that is expressed in the ambiguity between a cultural- and media-theoretical perspective as well an architectural analysis. The work is based on the interpretation of relevant primary literature in Portuguese. Unpublished material is combined. Of special value is the analysis of nine case studies of original interviews, which were conducted with participants involved in the development and subsequent use of the Centro Cultural São Paulo.

Abstract: "Why do governance reforms in developing democracies so often fail, and when might they succeed? When Democracies Deliver offers a fresh insight on the perils of powering and the benefits of gradual reform"--

Abstract: "Brazil, like several countries in Africa, has become a major destination for African American tourists seeking the cultural roots of the black Atlantic diaspora. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic research as well as textual, visual, and archival sources, Patricia de Santana Pinho investigates African American roots tourism, a complex, poignant kind of travel that provides profound personal and collective meaning for those searching for black identity and heritage. It also provides, as Pinho's interviews with Brazilian tour guides, state officials, and Afro-Brazilian activists reveal, economic and political rewards that support a structured industry"--

Abstract: "In Portuguese Jews, New Christians and 'New Jews' Claude B. Stuczynski and Bruno Feitler gather some of the leading scholars of the history of the Portuguese Jews and conversos in a tribute to their common friend and a renowned figure in Luso-Judaica, Roberto Bachmann, on the occasion of his 85th birthday. The texts are divided into five sections dealing with medieval Portuguese Jewish culture, the impact of the inquisitorial persecution, the wide range of converso identities on one side, and of the Sephardi Western Portuguese Jewish communities on the other, and the role of Portugal and Brazil as lands of refuge for Jews during the Second World War. This book is introduced by a comprehensive survey on the historiography on Portuguese Jews, New Christians and 'New Jews' and offers a contribution to Luso-Judaica studies"--

Abstract: In 1982, the Brazilian Air Force arrived on the Alcântara peninsula to build a state-of-the-art satellite launch facility. They displaced some 1,500 Afro-Brazilians from coastal land to inadequate inland villages, leaving many more threatened with displacement. The project was a vast undertaking, and the decades since its 1990 completion have seen it mired in controversy. 'Constellations of Inequality' tells that story, offering a uniquely insightful ethnography of Brazil's inequality politics.

Abstract: "Beginning in the 1490s in the Caribbean, and through the slow demise of native slavery in North and South America over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, millions of Amerindians were subjected to enslavement, captivity, and forced labor. Indian slavery was practiced across the Americas, at one point in time or another, in jurisdictions claimed by every European power that engaged in New World colonialism. Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, Scottish, French, and Russian colonists held native Americans as slaves, exerting their mastery over them and dealing in them as chattel. In parts of the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, native slavery survived the ending of European colonial claims and the formation of independent nation-states, lasting well into the nineteenth century. By that point, however, the numbers of Amerindians held as slaves in Brazil and the United States were tiny compared to the masses of African and Afro-American captives that made up the absolute majority of the populations of the two country's plantation zones. Indian slavery thus seemed a small thing-economically, socially, demographically-when set alongside African and Afro-American slavery, on the ascent through the first half of the new century in Brazil and the southern United States alike. Until recently-and for many good reasons-scholarly attention to Indian slavery has been similarly dwarfed by the volume of care and attention paid to African and Afro- American slavery in the Americas. Over the last fifteen years, however, the study of native slavery has undergone a remarkable boom among North American historians"--

Abstract: After decades of denying racism and underplaying cultural diversity, Latin American states began adopting transformative ethno-racial legislation in the late 1980s. In addition to symbolic recognition of indigenous peoples and black populations, governments in the region created a more pluralistic model of citizenship and made significant reforms in the areas of land, health, education, and development policy. Becoming Black Political Subjects explores this shift from color blindness to ethno-racial legislation in two of the most important cases in the region: Colombia and Brazil.Drawing on archival and ethnographic research, Tianna Paschel shows how, over a short period, black movements and their claims went from being marginalized to become institutionalized into the law, state bureaucracies, and mainstream politics. The strategic actions of a small group of black activists-working in the context of domestic unrest and the international community's growing interest in ethno-racial issues-successfully brought about change. Paschel also examines the consequences of these reforms, including the institutionalization of certain ideas of blackness, the reconfiguration of black movement organizations, and the unmaking of black rights in the face of reactionary movements.Becoming Black Political Subjects offers important insights into the changing landscape of race and Latin American politics and provokes readers to adopt a more transnational and flexible understanding of social movements

Abstract: Focusing on Brazil, this book approaches the term "heritage" from not only a historical and architectural point of view, but also considers its artistic, archaeological, natural, ethnological and industrial aspects. The book is divided into four thematic sections - 1) traditions and intangible heritage, 2) archaeological heritage, 3) natural heritage and landscapes, and 4) heritage of industrial and built environments - and presents chapters on a diverse range of topics, from samba and cultural identities in Rio de Janeiro, to the history of Brazilian archaeology, the value of scenic landscapes in Brazil, and the cultural landscape of Brazil. As an outcome of the First Heritage International Symposium, this unique book explores a variety of heritage dialogues, pursuing global and specific approaches, and combining different views, perceptions and senses.

Abstract: How and why are U.S. transnational corporations investing in the lives, educations, and futures of poor, racialized girls and women in the Global South? Is it a solution to ending poverty? Or is it a pursuit of economic growth and corporate profit? Drawing on more than a decade of research in the United States and Brazil, this book focuses on how the philanthropic, social responsibility, and business practices of various corporations use a logic of development that positions girls and women as instruments of poverty alleviation and new frontiers for capitalist accumulation. Using the Girl Effect, the philanthropic brand of Nike, Inc., as a central case study, the book examines how these corporations seek to address the problems of gendered poverty and inequality, yet do so using an instrumental logic that shifts the burden of development onto girls and women without transforming the structural conditions that produce poverty. These practices, in turn, enable corporations to expand their legitimacy, authority, and reach while sidestepping contradictions in their business practices that often exacerbate conditions of vulnerability for girls and women. With a keen eye towards justice, author Kathryn Moeller concludes that these corporatized development practices de-politicize girls' and women's demands for fair labor practices and a just global economy.
