    Kurzfassung: "In the Christian tradition, death was a punishment by God for the original sin of Adam and Eve. Banished from the Garden of Eden after eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, they were condemned to labour, until "you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."2 But later in historical time, God sent his son Jesus Christ to earth to teach people how to overcome death and achieve eternal life, as witnessed in the gospels. Christ taught that if sinful humans would repent of their sins and love God, they would be saved from death, for as he said to Martha in the house of Lazarus, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."3 The central narrative of Christian soteriology is the death of Christ himself, through crucifixion, and his resurrection from the dead three days later. Having triumphed over death, his purpose was to lead his followers to salvation. After Christ's bodily ascension into heaven, the task of saving souls for eternity was passed to his church. The emphasis on Christ's death and resurrection, and its representation in the eucharistic service, mean that death and commemoration lie at the very heart of Christianity"--

    Kurzfassung: Bilingual Europe presents to the reader a Europe that for a long time was 'multilingual': besides the vernacular languages Latin played an important role. Even 'nationalistic' treatises could be written in Latin. Until deep into the 18th century scientific works were written in it. It is still an official language of the Roman Catholic Church. But why did authors choose for Latin or for their native tongue. In the case of bilingual authors, what made them choose either language, and what implications did that have?     Kurzfassung: Within compulsory education, prevocational education is intended primarily to introduce participants to the world of work. This book considers curriculum design and pedagogical practice in pre-vocational education during the last two years of compulsory education. The study focuses on seven European countries (Scotland, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Portugal) and presents an analysis of the curriculum as it relates both to knowledge-based competencies in economics and business and to self- and social competencies. It then discusses the differences between the prescribed and the enacted curriculum as identified by means of a subsequent survey of teachers. The authors conclude with a comparative assessment of each country case study, combined with supranational recommendations. Prof. Dr. Matthias Pilz is professor and chair of the department of Business and Economics Education as well as of the German Research Centre for Comparative Education and Vocational Training, University of Cologne.Susanne Berger is research assistant at the Department of Business and Economics Education as well as at the German Research Center for Comparative Education and Vocational Training, University of Cologne.Dr. Roy Canning is a senior lecturer within the School of Education, University of Stirling.

    Anmerkung: Kinder- und Jugendmuseen sind im internationalen Vergleich betrachtet eine relativ junge Entwicklung. Die ältesten Kinder- und Jugendmuseen wurden zwar bereits in den siebziger Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts gegründet, aber erst in den neunziger Jahren gelang es den Initiatoren, diese Museen für Kinder stärker zu etablieren. Wo die Wurzeln der Kinder- und Jugendmuseen liegen und wie sich die besucherorientierte Konzeption von Kinder und Jugendmuseen vom sammlungsorientierten Ansatz traditioneller Museen unterscheidet, wird in der Publikation ebenso diskutiert, wie exemplarisch einzelne Kindermuseen in ihrer Entstehung und Entwicklung vorgestellt werden

    Anmerkung: Im Spannungsfeld von Traditionen, EU-Einigungsprozessen und globalen Entwicklungen haben die Debatten um den "Umbau des Sozialstaates" ein neues Stadium erreicht. Darüber hinaus werden die Einflüsse der EU auf nationale Reformprojekte sowie der aktuelle Stand der Bemühung um eine Harmonisierung der Sozialpolitik auf EU-Ebene analysiert. Ziel der Beiträge ist es, die Dynamiken, Brüche und Traditionen innerhalb der Sozialpolitiken der einzelnen Länder herauszuarbeiten und sie vor dem Hintergrund der europäischen Integrationspolitik zu diskutieren

    Anmerkung: In einer hitzigen Debatte mit Jeffrey Alexander, George Ritzer u. a. über den natio­ nalen Charakter soziologischer Theorie hat Richard Münch jüngst die These auf­ gestellt, daß Gesellschaftswissenschaften im allgemeinen eine Tendenz zum Eth­ nozentrismus hätten - nicht nur wegen des Hanges, ihre Ideen auf die eigenen Gesellschaften anzuwenden, sondern auch wegen der größeren Vertrautheit mit 1 dem spezifischen Alltag dieser Gesellschaften. Es sei hingegen die Chance gerade der europäischen Sozialwissenschaften, dieser Verengung zu entgehen: Wegen der hohen Fragmentierung und der z. T. geringen Größenordnung mancher Nationen seien die Europäer besonders gezwungen, über die Grenzen hinwegzuschauen und sich mit der "varietas" auseinanderzusetzen. Das ist seit der "großen Transformati­ on" gegen Ende des 20. Jhs. , also der "Revolution" von 1989, als Impuls und Auf­ trag noch deutlicher geworden. Zu den ersten Forschern, die sich vom Staunen über den Zusammenbruch des dualen Machtsystems in Europa erholt hatten und zu konkreten grenzüberschrei­ tenden Aktionen geschritten waren, um "Europa (neu) zu denken" (Edgar Morin), gehörten die Mitglieder der "Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Mitteleuropäische Studien" (ÖGfMS). Angeregt durch die alte und neue Scharnierfunktion der Öster­ reichischen Metropole Wien und die vielen persönlichen Kontakte mit Forschern aus mittel- und osteuropäischen Ländern unternahmen sie es, den alten Ost-West­ Dualismus sprengende Zusammenkünfte mit Kotlegen und Kotleginnen aus dem "anderen", nun wieder nahegerückten Europa zu organisieren, um gesamteuropäi­ sche Identitäten, die Herausforderung der Transformationsprozesse, die Vergan­ genheitsbewältigung und die Normalisierung einer "civil society" zu diskutieren

    Anmerkung: 1. 1 Zum Stand des Wissens Die Popularität der Auseinandersetzung um die Teilhabe von Frauen am Journalismus steht in seltsamem Gegensatz zum lückenhaften Forschungsstand zu diesem Thema. Vergleicht man die Diskussion in den USA mit der europäischen, so zeigt sich deutlich, daß einer mehr als zwanzigjährigen, kontinuierlichen Analyse der quantitativen Geschlechterstruktur im Journalismus dort, eine recht bruchstückhafte Betrachtung hier gegenübersteht. Eine vergleichende Untersuchung im europäischen Kontext ist damit deutlich erschwert. Einerseits ist die vorliegende Struktur und Qualität der Daten in den europäischen Staaten sehr unterschiedlich. Zum anderen leiden die international vergleichend angelegten Untersuchungen an mangelnder Präzision. Diese Defizite sollen hier an Beispielen deutlich gemacht werden, um mit einem Blick auf den Forschungsstand in den USA eine Strukturierung der Problemstellung vorzunehmen. Exemplarisch werde ich die Forschungsdiskussion in Deutschland dokumentieren und abschließend die europäisch vergleichenden Untersuchungen auf ihre Aussagefähigkeit für die hier im Mittelpunkt stehenden Fragestellungen überprüfen. Für alle Bereiche gilt, daß an dieser Stelle nur die wesentlichen Tendenzen dargestellt werden. Darüber hinausreichende Details werde ich, um Redundanz zu vermeiden, in den entsprechenden Teilen meiner Arbeit aufgreifen und in die Diskussion miteinbeziehen. Der Forschungsstand zur Geschlechterstruktur im Journalismus stellt sich im europäischen Vergleich äußerst uneinheitlich dar. Aus einzelnen nordeuropäischen Ländern liegen kontinuierliche Berufsstatistiken mit geschlechtsspezifischer Aufschlüsselung vor. Demgegenüber läßt sich in Griechenland oder Portugal bislang nicht einmal die aktuelle Zahl der Journalistinnen im Vergleich zu ihren männlichen Kollegen beschreiben
