    Abstract: Indigene Völker werden zumeist mit einer traditionellen Lebensweise in Verbindung gebracht. Unabhängig davon, ob diese Bräuche positiv – z.B. als ein Leben im Einklang mit der Natur - oder negativ – etwa als rückständig – gedeutet werden, findet ein Einweben moderner Strukturen in dieses Gedankenbild keinen Platz. Heutzutage kommt es jedoch zwangsläufig zu einem Zusammenprall unterschiedlicher Lebensweisen. Um diesen Konflikt in einen Nutzen umzuwandeln, bedarf es kultureller Übersetzungsprozesse, welche neue Formen interethnischer Kommunikation ermöglichen. Ecuador dient als Beispiel für die Interaktion verschiedener Ethnien und die Verhandlung zwischen Tradition und Moderne. Die daraus resultierenden Translationsvorgänge stehen emblematisch für globale Veränderungsprozesse. Die Autorin des Buches untersucht, wie es indigenen Völkern über die Jahrhunderte hinweg bis heute gelungen ist, fremde Strukturen in ihre Kultur zu übernehmen und moderne Elemente für das eigene Leben nutzbar zu machen, ohne dabei ihre kulturelle Identität zu verlieren.

    Abstract: Nach den ersten demokratischen Wahlen in Südafrika 1994 ist eine Generation herangewachsen, welche die Apartheid nicht mehr miterlebt hat. Sie ist in einem demokratischen Staat aufgewachsen, in dem die Apartheid dennoch in vielen Bereichen nachwirkt. Basierend auf ethnografischer Forschung legt die Autorin dar, wie VertreterInnen der born-free Generation die Vergangenheit ihres Landes interpretieren. Durch zwei neue Ansätze leistet die Untersuchung einen innovativen Beitrag zur Erinnerungsforschung: erstens durch den rezeptions-zentrierten Zugang, der soziale Positionierungen der befragten Jugendlichen in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Zweitens durch das Konzept des Chronotopos, mit dem die Relevanz von Zeit, Raum und Subjekt in der Analyse von Vergangenheitsdarstellungen berücksichtigt wird.

Wie bedeutsam die Diskussionen über Heimat und wie unterschiedlich Heimatkonzepte sind, zeigt sich bei den derzeitigen ambivalenten Auseinandersetzungen um die Integration von Migrant*innen. Um die alte Heimat überhaupt in eine neue transformieren zu können, bedarf es der Anerkennung durch die Aufnahmegesellschaft und der Partizipation an dieser. Durch geeignete Konzepte in der Migrationsarbeit kann die Soziale Arbeit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Unterstützung leisten.

In this democratic framework, Indian Muslims are observed on how they make use of the spaces and channels to accommodate their Islamic identity within a secular one. This book analyses how the socio-political context shapes citizens' perceptions of multiple variables, such as their sense of political efficacy, agency, conception of citizenship rights and belief in democracy. Based on extensive surveys and interviews and through presenting and investigating the various meanings of jihād, the author explores the usage of non-Eurocentric conceptual approaches to the study of postcolonial and Muslim societies, in particular the meaning it carries in the psyche of the Muslim community. She argues that through means of argumentative and spiritual jihād, Indian Muslims fight their battle towards a realisation of citizenship ideals despite the unfavourable conditions of intra and inter community conflicts.     Abstract: "Orientalism as a concept was first applied to Western colonial views of the East. Subsequently, different types of orientalism were discovered but the premise was that these took their lead from Western-style orientalism, applying it in different circumstances. This book, on the other hand, argues that the diffusion of interpretations in orientalism was not uni-directional, and that the different orientologies, Western, Soviet and Oriental, did not develop in isolation from each other and were interlocked in such a way that a change in any one of them affected the others; and that those being orientalised were active, not passive, players in shaping how views of themselves developed"--

    Abstract: Wie verändert sich afrikanische Kirchenmusik, wenn sie aufgeschrieben wird? Wie gelingt es Dorfchören, Lieder mündlich zu überliefern? Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches steht das Werk des Kameruner Dorfpfarrers Elias E. Ngole (1913-2005). Ausgehend von der britischen Tonic Sol-fa Solmisationsschrift hat er eine Notation für seine Lieder entwickelt. Der Autor rekonstruiert das System dieser Notenschrift und analysiert die Techniken der mündlichen Übermittlung, die vor allem durch eine spezialisierte Gestik gesichert wird. Das Buch ist eine musikethnologische Studie über eine Musikpraxis im Bakossi-Gebiet, die neben Klang und Sprache die Körperbewegungen mit einbezieht. Zugleich bietet sie viele Vergleichspunkte zu Fragen der Entstehung von Musiknotationen überhaupt.

    Abstract: "China's transformation from a poor and underdeveloped country into a global market power has profoundly altered its socioeconomic power relations with the other countries in the Greater China region, namely, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Indeed, this economic shift has resulted in the massive flow of capital and people from Taiwan as well as Hong Kong to China, to seek business opportunities and new lifestyles. These flows have in turn completely transformed longstanding borderlines in the region. This book examines the transformation of Taiwan and Hong Kong's socioeconomic relationships with China as their economies have become more deeply integrated into Greater China. Across three key sections, it explores the impact of increasing social interaction and the shrinking of existing borderlines to ask whether these changes will bring about a convergence of identity among the people involved. 'Production', examines how investments from Taiwan and Hong Kong to China have transformed production networks; 'community and daily life' explores the impact of cross boundary mobility and the integration of migrants into Chinese communities; and finally, 'identity formation' engages with what is one of the most important issues in contemporary Taiwanese society.     Abstract: "Over the past few years, secularism has become an intrinsic component of discussions on religious freedom and religious governance. The question of whether states should restrict the wearing of headscarves and other religious symbols has been particularly critical in guiding this thought process. Refashioning Secularisms in France and Turkey documents how, in both countries, devout women have contested bans on headscarves, pointing to how these are inconsistent with the 'real' spirit of secularism. These activists argue that it is possible to be simultaneously secular and religious; to believe in the values conveyed by secularism, while still remaining devoted to their faith. Through this examination, the book highlights how activists locate their claims within the frame of secularism, while at the same time revisiting it to craft a space for their religiosity.     Abstract: "This book explores the unfolding of world history in a remote corner of Central Asia: the region of Badakhshan. The history of this region has commonly been explored through the lens of the major superpowers who competed over its territory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Britain, Russia, and China. Here, we are offered a comprehensive overview of the history of the Ismaili community in Tajikistan. Leadership and Authority in Central Asia identifies traditional forms of religious authority within the network of religious functionaries at a range of levels and discusses the functions of Ismaili political leaders as they have evolved through time. Skilfully applying an interdisciplinary approach -- drawing on historical sources, including unpublished materials, and ethnographic fieldwork data collected through interviews -- and a perceptive analysis of political theories of leadership in communist and post-communist societies, this book challenges the ways religious and secular categories have been distinguished in recent scholarship. Developing a structural explanation for the survival and evolution of religious and political authorities of Badakhshani Ismailis in times of radical social and political upheaval, this book will be of interest to scholars of Muslim societies, Political Science and Central Asian Studies"--

    Abstract: "In recent years bitter controversies have erupted across Europe and the Middle East about women's veiling, and especially their wearing of the face-veil or niqab. Yet the deeper issues contained within these controversies--secularism versus religious belief, individual freedom versus social or family coercion, identity versus integration--are not new but are strikingly prefigured by earlier conflicts. This book examines the state-sponsored anti-veiling campaigns which swept across wide swathes of the Muslim world in the interwar period, especially in Turkey and the Balkans, Iran, Afghanistan and the Soviet republics of the Caucasus and Central Asia. It shows how veiling was officially discouraged and ridiculed as backward and, although it was rarely banned, veiling was politicized and turned into a rallying-point for a wider opposition. Asking a number of questions about this earlier anti-veiling discourse and the policies flowing from it, and the reactions which it provoked, the book illuminates and contextualizes contemporary debates about gender, Islam and modernism"--

    Abstract: "This book presents an analysis of adaptive local policy implementation in China in the context of the "Building of a New Socialist Countryside" (BNSC) policy framework. Based on intensive field work in four counties in Fujian, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Zhejiang Provinces between 2008 and 2011, it offers detailed analyses of the form and impact of county governments' strategic agency at certain stages and within certain fields of the implementation process (for example, the design of local BNSC programs, the steering of project funding, implementation and evaluation, the establishment of model villages and the management of public participation). Further, this study illustrates that BNSC is far more than the 'empty slogan' described by many observers when it was launched in 2005/2006. nstead, it has already brought about considerable shifts in terms of the process and outcomes of rural policy implementation. Altogether, the results of this research challenge existing paradigms by showing how, against the background of contemporary approaches to rural development and recent reforms initiated by the central state, local bureaucracies' strategic agency can actually push forward effective--albeit not necessarily optimal--policy implementation to some extent, which serves the interests of central authorities, local implementors and rural residents"--

    Abstract: "This volume connects the study of statebuilding to broader aspects of social theory and the historical study of the state, bringing forth new questions and starting-points, both academically and practically, for the field. Building states has become a highly prioritized issue in international politics. Since the 1990s, mainly Western countries and international institutions have invested large sums of money, vast amounts of manpower, and considerable political capital in ventures of this kind all across the globe. Most of the focus in current literature is on the acute cases, such as Afghanistan and Iraq, but also to states that seem to fit the label 'failed states' such as Liberia, Sierra Leone and Somalia. This book brings together a diverse group of scholars who introduce new theoretical approaches from the broader social sciences. The chapters revisit historical cases of statebuilding, and provide thought-provoking, new strategic perspectives on the field. The result is a volume that broadens and deepens our understanding of statebuilding by highlighting the importance of hybridity, contingency and history in a broad range of case-studies. This book will be of much interest to students of statebuilding and intervention, peacebuilding, war and conflict studies, security studies and IR in general"--

    Abstract: In the current climate of political extremism and violence, much attention has been directed towards "radicalisation" as the reasons behind such courses of action, along with a conviction that those who are radicalised represent an irrational deviation from the conventionally accepted norms of social and political behaviour. This book focuses on the current issues and analytical approaches to the phenomenon of radicalisation in North Africa. Taking a comprehensive approach to the subject, it looks at the processes that lead to radicalisation, rather than the often violent outcomes. At the same time, chapters expand the discussion historically and conceptually beyond the preoccupations of recent years, in order to develop a more holistic understanding of a complex individual and collective process that has represented a permanent challenge to dominant political, social and, on occasion, economic norms. With contributions from academics and policy-makers within and outside the region, the book is a comprehensive investigation of Islamist Radicalisation. As such, it will be of great interest to academics and students investigating North Africa and terrorism, as well as specialists in radicalism and extremism.
