    Abstract: "Since the 1990s, biometric border control has attained key importance throughout Europe. Employing digital images of, for example, fingerprints, DNA, bones, faces or irises, biometric technologies use bodies to identify, categorize, and regulate individuals' cross-border movements. Based on innovative collaborative fieldwork, this book examines how biometrics are developed, put to use and negotiated in key European border sites. It analyses the disparate ways in which the technologies are applied, perceived and experienced by border control agents and others managing the cross-border flow of people, by scientists and developers engaged in making the technologies, and by migrants and NGOs attempting to manoeuvre in the complicated and often unpredictable systems of technological control. Biometric technologies are promoted by national and supra-national authorities and industry as scientifically exact and neutral methods of identification and verification, and as an infallible solution to security threats. The ethnographic case studies in this volume demonstrate, however, that the technologies are, in fact, characterized by considerable ambiguity and uncertainty, and subject to substantial subjective interpretation, translation and brokering with different implications for migrants, border guards, researchers and other actors engaged in the border world"--

    Abstract: For the analysis of contemporary historical pop-cultural phenomena, a surplus of transnational perspectives are often asserted, but rarely backed up empirically. This volume, however, gathers together case studies that without exception analyze multiple countries and are engaged in forceful historical comparisons, as well as histories of transfer and intertwinement. They focus on music and film, television and radio, magazines and comics, youth culture and fashion. The epistemological interest is directed not just at the comparison of the trends of Americanization and Europeanization in the long decade of the '60s, but also at the relevance of transnational popular culture for processes of social and political transformation

    Abstract: Contrary to what is suggested in media and popular discourses, Europe is neither a monolithic entity, nor simply a collection of nation states. It is, rather, a union of millions of individuals who differ from one another in a variety of ways, while also sharing many characteristics associated with their ethnic, social, political, economic, religious, or national characteristics. This book explores differences and similarities that exist in attitudes, beliefs and opinions on a range of issues across Europe. Drawing on the extensive data of the European Social Survey, it presents insightful analyses of social attitudes, organised around the themes of religious identity, political identity, family identity and social identity, together with a section on methodological issues.     Abstract: Women have been important contributors to and readers of magazines since the development of the periodical press in the nineteenth century. By the mid-twentieth century, millions of women read the weeklies and monthlies that focused on supposedly 'feminine concerns' of the home, family and appearance. In the decades that followed, feminist scholars criticised such publications as at best conservative and at worst regressive in their treatment of gender norms and ideals. However, this perspective obscures the heterogeneity of the magazine industry itself and women's experiences of it, both as readers and as journalists. This collection explores such diversity, highlighting the differing and at times contradictory images and understandings of women in a range of magazines and women's contributions to magazines in a number of contexts from late nineteenth century publications to twenty-first century titles in Britain, North America, continental Europe and Australia.

    Abstract: The recent media, political and everyday treatment of forced migration has made overt racism "socially acceptable" again. In this way, the discussion of "refugees" and "migrants" following the events in Cologne on New Years' Eve has increasingly taken on the tone of the demonisation of the imagined Other. As this is linked to the "tightening of the asylum act" and a European refugee politics that is increasingly isolationist, this demonisation also preserves material and symbolic relations of privilege. Because the Others are demonic and rampant, as the most concise formation of the analysis goes, we are empowered to protect ourselves from them. It is from this perspective that researchers come forward to speak against the hegemonic discourse

    Abstract: Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection).     Abstract: In Analogie zu den stadträumlichen Inszenierungen jüdischer Kultur, den »Jewish Spaces«, gewinnnen zunehmend auch »Gypsy Spaces« an Gestalt. Roma-Festivals sind populär, während gleichzeitig die Angst vor einer »Roma-Invasion« grassiert. Monica Rüthers geht der Entstehungsgeschichte und den Funktionen dieser neuen Folklore im gegenwärtigen Europa nach. Sie vergleicht das jüdische Kulturfestival in Krakau mit der Zigeunerwallfahrt in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer und passt beide Räume in die kulturellen Topografien Europas ein. Die Analyse dieser Anlässe erlaubt die Frage, ob solche Räume auch emanzipatorisches Potenzial entfalten können. Es zeigt sich: Im Umgang mit dem Fremden spiegelt sich der Prozess der europäischen Integration

    Abstract: »Kosmopolitismus« - eine große Idee mit langer Begriffsgeschichte, die bis zu den Hellenen zurückreicht, wird wieder aktuell: Das Europa des 21. Jahrhunderts definiert sich kosmopolitisch. Kosmopolitische Gedächtniskulturen orientieren sich an universalen Symbolen wie der »Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte« und dem Begriff des »Verbrechens gegen die Menschheit« - Schlagworte, die sich gerade in Europa nach der konkreten historischen Erfahrung des Mordes an den europäischen Juden als politische Grundbegriffe formierten.Unter Bezug auf die Schriften von Hannah Arendt zeigt der Essay, wie sich zurzeit besonders in Europa eine neue kosmopolitische Sprache und Wirklichkeit herausbildet, die sich ohne Rückgriff auf das jüdische Gedächtnis über den Judenmord definieren will. Als jüdische Weltbürgerin wollte sich Arendt weder nach nationalstaatlicher Manier integrieren noch blindes Vertrauen in die politische Souveränität der Nationalstaaten setzen. In ihren jüdischen Schriften artikulierte sie den Raum, der zwischen dem Dazugehören zu einer partikularen politischen Gemeinschaft und der Universalität der Menschenrechte liegt. Mit ihrer Hilfe erschließt dieses Buch die Möglichkeit eines jüdischen Kosmopolitismus

    Abstract: This collection sets out to analyze the influence of women's movements on the emergence of Europe's welfare state from the 1880s to the 1950s, and the limits of that influence. It compares the women's movements - and social policies concerning women - in the dictatorships of Italy, Germany and Spain with the democracies in Britain, France and Scandinavia. It throws new lights on feminism, especially in the inter-war period.
