    Abstract: "Colonial and Post-Colonial Identity Politics in South Asia analyses the colonial and post-colonial documentation and caste classification among Muslims in India, demonstrating that religion negotiated with regional social customs and local social practices whilst at the same time fostering a shared religious belief. The central question addressed in this is book is how different castes assert their identity for classification and how caste encountered colonial documentation. Identifying the colonial context of the documentation of caste among Muslims, and relying on colonial documentation in various census reports, Gazetteers, government or police records, ethnographic studies and travelogues, the author demonstrates the sheer diversity of attempts and caste among Muslims. The book deconstructs how under Colonialism Muslims were categorized into three broad but overlapping categories - Ashraf, Ajlafs and Arzals - and that Muslims were categorized into Asiatic, Non-Asiatic, Foreign, Mixed and Hindustani -Muslim categories. It argues that few colonial theories applied to Muslims. Finally, the author explores post-colonial documentation of castes among Muslims in various Commission reports, particularly in Backward class commission reports and its interplay in the reservation politics of the contemporary period and examines the growth of various Muslim caste organizations in different parts of India and their role in identity politics. Providing a new perspective on the issue of minorities in India, this book will be of interest to scholars of religion, Islam, history, politics and sociology of India"--

    Abstract: "Defending Traditional Islam in Indonesia examines the rise of young preachers of Arab descent (habaib) and their sermon groups in the region and shows how Islam and politics coexist, flourish, interlace, and strive in Indonesia in complex, pragmatic, and mutually beneficial relationships. The book argues that the emergence of Arab preachers in the late 1990s, when traditional forms of Islamic authority came under growing challenge from a diverse array of Muslim groups and ideologies, is closely tied to contestation between traditionalists and their puritanical rivals, the Salafi-Wahhabi. Not only have the habaib featured prominently in defending traditionalism, they have also used this contestation as an opportunity to build their authority and religious capital through marketisation and their ties to the Middle East. The author explores the ways in which habaib promote themselves to the mostly young urban, Muslim community, and also analyses the use of new media and marketing strategies by habaib to attract young followers. The use of merchandise utilising popular culture and group identity markers is especially salient in the preachers' outreach to urban audiences. In addition, public staging and entertainment during preaching activities are means by which the habaib cast their Islamic preaching (dakwah) as the Prophet's mission and encourage their followers' participation.     Abstract: Modern biomedical technologies managed to revolutionise the End-of-Life Care (EoLC) in many aspects. The dying process can now be “engineered” by managing the accompanying physical symptoms or by “prolonging/hastening” death itself.     Abstract: "Centring the Periphery: New Perspectives on Collecting East Asian Objects, edited by Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik, explores East Asian collections in "peripheral" areas of Europe and North America and their relationship with the East Asian collections in former imperial and colonial centres. The authors not only present the stories of a number of less well-known individual objects and collections, but also discuss the evolution of fashions and tastes in East Asian objects in areas that were not centres of European colonial power, and the socioeconomic conditions in which they were collected. To date, research on the collecting of East Asian objects in the Euro-American region has focused primarily on larger collections and collectors in France, Britain, and the United States.     Abstract: "This book traces the history of everyday relations of Greek-Orthodox Christians and Muslims of Cappadocia, an Ottoman countryside inhabited by various ethno-religious groups, either sharing the same settlements, or living in neighbouring villages. Based on Ottoman state archives, testimonies collected by the Centre of Asia Minor Studies, and various pre-1923 hand-written and printed sources mostly in Ottoman- and Karamanli-Turkish, and Greek, the study covers the period from 1839 to 1923 and proposes an anthropological perspective on everyday cross-religious interactions. It focuses on questions such as identification and mapping of communities, sharing of space and resources, use of languages, and religiosity in the context of conversions and of shared sacred spaces and beliefs to investigate everyday realities of a multireligious rural society which disappeared with the fall of the Empire"--

    Abstract: Dieses Buch zielt darauf, die Bildstrategien bzw. die Visualisierung der rechtspopulistischen Ideologie der Partei Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) zu untersuchen. Ausgangslage der Analyse ist das Verständnis von der Ideologie des Rechtspopulismus als die antagonistische Beziehung zwischen dem nationalen Volk auf der einen Seite und den Eliten sowie den Fremden auf der anderen Seite definiert. Die rechtspopulistische Ideologie der AfD lässt sich in den Narrationen zu den Themen aus ihren Wahl- und Parteiprogrammen erkennen. In diesen Narrationen werden das nationale Volk einerseits und die Eliten sowie die Fremden andererseits mit bestimmten Eigenschaften konfrontativ gegenübergestellt. Anschließend werden sechs Grundmuster der kognitiven Eigen- und Fremdstereotype sowohl aus der Stereotypenforschung als auch aus den Konzepten der sozialen Diskriminierung entwickelt. Um diese Grundmuster auf der Bildebene analysieren zu können, werden visuelle Stereotype als Bildtypen aus der politischen Ikonografie definiert, die die Vorstellung über verallgemeinerbare Eigenschaften ganzer Menschengruppen repräsentieren. Die Methode der Bildtypenanalyse und die Methode der politischen Ikonografie und Ikonologie werden herangezogen, diese Bildtypen zu analysieren und damit die Bildstrategien der AfD freizulegen. Die Autorin Feng Yingyi arbeitet als Dozentin am Zentrum für Deutschland-Studien der Sichuan International Studies University in China.

    Abstract: Spätestens mit den Debatten zu einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der deutschen und anderer europäischer Gesellschaften rückt die Frage nach Prozessen der Radikalisierung in den Blick. Neben individuellen Radikalisierungen sind es vor allem gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die für die Radikalisierung, manchmal sogar ganzer Gruppen, verantwortlich zeichnen.     Abstract: Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit dem Einfluss politischer Kulturen auf die Antiterrorpolitik in Frankreich, Belgien und Deutschland infolge islamistischer Terroranschläge im Zeitraum von 2015 bis 2017. Im Kern geht es um die Frage, weshalb sich in Frankreich außerordentliche Maßnahmen samt Ausrufen des Ausnahmezustandes initiieren und gegenüber den Menschen im Land legitimieren ließen, während politische Akteure in Belgien und Deutschland darauf verzichteten. Um die Frage zu beantworten, hat die Autorin Interviews mit politischen Entscheidungsträgern in den drei Ländern geführt sowie Exekutivdiskurse unterschiedlicher Genres ausgewertet: Beiträge im Parlament, Regierungserklärungen, öffentliche Ansprachen, Trauerbekundungen, Pressemitteilungen, Interviewbeiträge. Auf der Grundlage einer vergleichenden qualitativen Fallstudie verdeutlicht sie, dass sich politische Entscheidungsträger bei der Wahl und sprachlichen Legitimierung von Antiterrormaßnahmen nicht nur auf rein materielle oder rationalistische Abwägungen stützen (konnten), sondern ihnen kollektive Erinnerungen an Ausnahmezustände sowie unterschiedliche Verfassungskulturen eine Orientierungshilfe für angemessenes Verhalten gaben. Die Autorin Dr. Sophie Hegemann studierte innerhalb des deutsch-französischen Studiengangs Sozialwissenschaften (Universität Stuttgart)/Sciences Po (IEP Bordeaux). Während ihrer deutsch-französischen Promotion war sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Universität Trier.

    Abstract: "Women, Islam and Familial Intimacy in Colonial South Asia highlights the rich tradition of protest and defiance among the Muslim women of colonial India. Bringing together a range of archival material including novels, pamphlets, commentaries and journalistic essays, it narrates a history of Muslim feminism conversing with, and confronting the dominant and influential narratives of didactic social reform. The book reveals how discussion about marriage and family evoked claims of women's freedom and rights in a highly charged literary and cultural landscape where lesser-known female intellectuals jostled for public space alongside well-known male social reformers. Definitions of Islamic ethics remained central to these debates, and the book illustrates how claims of social obligation, religious duty and freedom balanced and negotiated each other in a period of nationalism and reform. By doing so, it also illuminates a story of Muslim politics that goes beyond the well-established accounts of Muslim separatism and the Pakistan movement"--

    Abstract: The 1720 Imperial Circumcision Celebrations in Istanbul offers the first holistic examination of an Ottoman public festival through an in-depth inquiry into different components of the 1720 event. Through a critical and combined analysis of the hitherto unknown archival sources along with the textual and pictorial narratives on the topic, the book vividly illustrates the festival's organizational details and preparations, its complex rites (related to consumption, exchange, competition), and its representation in court-commissioned illustrated festival books (sūrnāmes). To analyze all these phases in a holistic manner, the book employs an interdisciplinary approach by using the methodological tools of history, art history, and performance studies and thus, provides a new methodological and conceptual framework for the study of Ottoman celebrations

    Abstract: "This volume is a collection of studies of various religious groups in the changing religious markets of China: registered Christian congregations, unregistered house churches, Daoist masters, and folk-religious temples. The contributing authors are emerging Chinese scholars who apply and respond to Fenggang Yang's tricolor market theory of religion in China: the red, black, and gray markets for legal, illegal, and ambiguous religious groups, respectively.     Abstract: Crossing Cultural Boundaries in East Asia and Beyond explores the personal complexities and ambiguities, and the successes and failures, of crossing borders and boundaries. While the focus is on East Asia, it universalizes cultural anxieties with comparative cases in Russia and the United States. The authors primarily engage the individual experiences of border-crossing, rather than more typically those of political or social groups located at territorial boundaries. Drawing on those individual experiences, this volume presents an array of attempts to negotiate the discomforts of crossing personal borders, and attends to the intimate experiences of border crossers, whether they are traveling to an unfamiliar cultural location or encountering the "other" in local settings such as the classroom or the coffee shop

    Abstract: Seit dem Übergang zur Demokratie in Tunesien scheint der Konflikt zwischen der islamistischen Ennahda und den nichtislamistischen Parteien das Parteiensystem zu strukturieren, dennoch besteht Uneinigkeit über den Konfliktgegenstand. Durch eine vertiefte Analyse der vorfindbaren kollektiven belief systems, konnte der Band den Unterschied in den Wertevorstellungen und Ansichten der Islamist:innen und Nichtislamist:innen herausarbeiten und zeigen, dass sie sich tatsächlich unterscheiden. Dabei steht nicht die Ordnung des religiösen Feldes bzw. das Verhältnis der Religion im Staat im Zentrum, sondern ihre Vorstellungen von der nationalen identität und der idealen Einrichtung der Demokratie. Der Autor Valerian Thielicke ist derzeit wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte am Institut für Politik- und Verwaltungswissenschaften der Universität Rostock. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Politik und Gesellschaft des Maghrebs, Geschichte des Politischen Denkens der MENA-Region sowie politische Kognitionsforschung. .

    Abstract: "The 1720 Imperial Circumcision Celebrations in Istanbul offers the first holistic examination of an Ottoman public festival through an in-depth inquiry into different components of the 1720 event. Through a critical and combined analysis of the hitherto unknown archival sources along with the textual and pictorial narratives on the topic, the book vividly illustrates the festival's organizational details and preparations, its complex rites (related to consumption, exchange, competition), and its representation in court-commissioned illustrated festival books (sūrnāmes). To analyze all these phases in a holistic manner, the book employs an interdisciplinary approach by using the methodological tools of history, art history, and performance studies and thus, provides a new methodological and conceptual framework for the study of Ottoman celebrations"--
