Abstract: Natural selection has operated as strongly or more so on the early stages of the lifespan as on adulthood. One evolved feature of human childhood is high levels of behavioral, cognitive, and neural plasticity, permitting children to adapt to a wide range of physical and social environments. Taking an evolutionary perspective on infancy and childhood provides a better understanding of contemporary human development, predicting and understanding adult behavior, and explaining how changes in the early development of our ancestors produced contemporary Homo sapiens

Abstract: Virtually all theories of how humans have become such a distinctive species focus on evolution. Here, Michael Tomasello proposes a complementary theory of human uniqueness, focused on ontogenetic processes. His data-driven model explains how those things that make us most human are constructed during the first years of a child's life. Tomasello assembles nearly three decades of experimental work with chimpanzees, bonobos, and human children to propose a new framework for psychological development between birth and seven years of age. He identifies eight pathways that starkly differentiate humans from their closest primate relatives: social cognition, communication, cultural learning, cooperative thinking, collaboration, prosociality, social norms, and moral identity. In each of these, great apes possess rudimentary abilities. But then, Tomasello argues, the maturation of humans' evolved capacities for shared intentionality transform these abilities into uniquely human cognition and sociality. The first step occurs around nine months, with the emergence of joint intentionality, exercised mostly with caregiving adults. The second step occurs around three years, with the emergence of collective intentionality involving both authoritative adults, who convey cultural knowledge, and coequal peers, who elicit collaboration and communication. Finally, by age six or seven, children become responsible for self-regulating their beliefs and actions so that they comport with cultural norms. Built on the essential ideas of Lev Vygotsky, Becoming Human places human sociocultural activity within the framework of modern evolutionary theory, and shows how biology creates the conditions under which culture does its work.--

Abstract: Die Folgen von destruktiven Paarkonflikten für Kinder -- Scheidung der Eltern als Risikofaktor für die kindliche Entwicklung -- Zum Wohle des Kindes – Negative Folgen von Partnerschaftsstörungen vorbeugen.
Abstract: This book is a first attempt to combine insights from the two perspectives with regard to the question of meaning by examining a collection of theoretical and empirical works. This volume therefore is destined to become an important addition to psychological literature: both from the viewpoint of the history of ideas (again this would be one of the first times that positive and existentialist psychologies meet) and from the viewpoint of theoretical and empirical research into the meaning concept in psychology.

Abstract: As a child, he played with trucks and action figures and wanted to be a firefighter. As a youth, he began dressing up in his mother's clothes and becoming sexually aroused. When he started dating, he dreamed of being his girlfriends. "What am I?" he asked his therapist. "A transsexual? A transvestite? Something else?" This vignette describes a man who experiences autogynephilia: a paraphilic disorder in which men who are attracted to women are also erotically aroused by the idea of being women and sometimes want to undergo sex reassignment and live as women. Men Trapped in Men's Bodies explores the phenomenon of autogynephilia, arguing cogently that it accounts for many cases of male-to-female (MtF) transsexualism in Western countries. The book demonstrates that not all MtF transsexuals conform to the familiar stereotype of women trapped in men's bodies: Many resemble-and even describe themselves as-men trapped in men's bodies. Sometimes at odds with conventional wisdom about the interrelationships of sex, gender, and sexuality, the book examines the manifestations and clinical implications of autogynephilia, based on narratives provided by over 300 autogynephilic MtF transsexuals and transgender persons: stories of shame and confusion, courage and self-acceptance. The final chapter examines current and possible future treatment options for autogynephilic gender dysphoric men. Included in this important volume are: • Narratives by autogynephilic transsexuals • Developmental histories of autogynephilic transsexuals • Descriptions of different types of autogynephilia • Autogynephilia's relationship to heterosexuality • Narratives by nontranssexual autogynephiles • Contrasting views of the meaning of autogynephilia For researchers who study gender dysphoria, MtF transsexualism, paraphilias, and related conditions, and for clinicians who treat patients with these conditions, Men Trapped in Men's Bodies provides an essential resource for understanding an underappreciated aspect of MtF transsexualism. For MtF transsexuals and transgender persons, as well as their partners, family members, friends, and associates, the book is a welcome new source of information and validation.

Abstract: The expert research of School Shootings: International Research, Case Studies, and Concepts for Prevention goes beyond simple "violent teen culture creates violent students" constructs to present current theories and findings, a diverse range of case studies, and examples of successful prevention programs. (Instructive cases that fall outside the general template, such as an early female shooter and a Samurai sword attack, are also included for additional insights.) Contributors from a variety of disciplines thoughtfully explore the role of media in conceptualizing school shootings and shooters for the public, the social nuances of "cool kids" versus outsiders, and the construction of male socialization for multifaceted coverage of this growing phenomenon. Among the featured topics: The relevance of fantasy in school shootings. Thirty-five school shootings: trends, patterns, typology. Legitimated adolescent violence: lessons from Columbine. School shooters and their followers on the Web. The Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines: a science-based prevention strategy. School-level crisis management when a shooting incident occurs. A groundbreaking work that opens up possibilities for future studies and interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration, School Shootings is imperative reading for researchers in criminology and criminal justice, especially with an interest in lifecourse studies and violence prevention/intervention. It will also be of considerable interest to researchers in youth-related fields, including child and school psychology, and education.

Abstract: Resilience is a topic that is currently receiving increased attention. In general, resilience refers to the capacity of those who, even under the most stressful circumstances, are able to cope, to rebound, and to go on and thrive. Resilient families are able to regain their balance following crises that arise as a function of either nature or nurture, and to continue to encourage and support their members as they deal with the necessary requirements for accommodation, adaptation and, ultimately, healthy survival. Handbook of Family Resilience provides a broad body of knowledge regarding the traits and patterns found to characterize resilient individuals and well-functioning families, including those with diverse structures, various ethnic backgrounds and a variety of non-traditional forms. This Handbook brings together a variety of perspectives aimed at understanding and helping to facilitate resilience in families relative to a full range of challenges.

Abstract: Childhood is the most important stage of human development, a fact that makes children the central target group for social work intervention. In turn, most schools of human development and social work around the world have an elective course on children, with some offering a concentration in this area. Yet while there are plenty of textbooks on intervention with children that contain useful theories and skills, many focus on remedial rather than preventative strategies, and do not adopt a child rights perspective. In turn, books on child rights fail to link the latter either with theoretical background or the preventative approach. This book, aimed at faculty members and students in social work and related programs, breaks new ground by being the first to apply the child rights perspective and the preventative approach to intervention for children's psychosocial well-being. It covers crucial ground in child psychology, even providing an ecological perspective to potential developmental problems. Relevant to situations across the world, and integrating theory, practice and teaching, its three sections introduce the rights-based perspective to preventative intervention, then move on to examine primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for children’s psychosocial well-being

Abstract: Social skills are at the core of mental health, so much so that deficits in this area are a criterion of clinical disorders, across both the developmental spectrum and the DSM. The Practitioner s Guide to Empirically-Based Measures of Social Skills gives clinicians and researchers an authoritative resource reflecting the ever growing interest in social skills assessment and its clinical applications. This one-of-a-kind reference approaches social skills from a social learning perspective, combining conceptual background with practical considerations, and organized for easy access to material relevant to assessment of children, adolescents, and adults. The contributors expert guidance covers developmental and diversity issues, and includes suggestions for the full range of assessment methods, so readers can be confident of reliable, valid testing leading to appropriate interventions. Key features of the Guide: An official publication of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Describes empirically-based assessment across the lifespan. Provides in-depth reviews of nearly 100 measures, their administration and scoring, psychometric properties, and references. Highlights specific clinical problems, including substance abuse, aggression, schizophrenia, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and social anxiety. Includes at-a-glance summaries of all reviewed measures. Offers full reproduction of more than a dozen measures for children, adolescents, and adults, e.g. the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire and the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills. As social skills assessment and training becomes more crucial to current practice and research, the Practitioner s Guide to Empirically-Based Measures of Social Skills is a steady resource that clinicians, researchers, and graduate students will want close at hand.

Abstract: With each passing year, the educational landscape continues to become increasingly diversified across race and culture. This poses a significant challenge to schools worldwide-and particularly to school psychologists and allied educational professionals-to recognize and serve the needs of students and families with widely diverse language and cultural backgrounds. To be most effective in their jobs, school psychologists must now have a basic understanding of the impact of language and culture on individual students as well as those they interact with every day. The Encyclopedia of Cross-Cultural School Psychology (ECCSP) is comprehensive and reader friendly, with approximately 400 entries written by leading researchers, educators, and practitioners in the fields of school psychology and education. ECCSP provides an easily accessible A-to-Z reference in one concise volume across these six key cross-cultural competency areas: Legal and Ethical Issues School Culture, Educational Policy, and Institutional Advocacy Psychoeducational Assessment and Related Issues Academic, Therapeutic, and Consultative Intervention Working with Interpreters Research. School psychologists, educators, and other allied child psychology and education professionals, researchers, policy makers, graduate students, healthcare and mental health professionals, child advocates, and paraprofessionals benefit from the way in which this volume highlights the concepts and themes that are critical to addressing cross-cultural issues in schools. Entries also include issues relevant to pre-K through 12th grade and, as a result, provide a lifespan approach to diversity. Each entry offers a definition and description of the term, a bibliography, and additional references for professionals and all readers interested in seeking more in-depth information on any topic. All entries are cross-referenced to other terms of related interest, and a list of contributors is provided at the end of the volume in case readers want to research additional works by the same author. A subject index also helps readers find desired information quickly. ECCSP is certain to become the accompanying reference book for coursework, research, practice, consultation, and policy in the ever-growing field of cross-cultural school psychology and education

Abstract: This Handbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative account available on what giftedness is, how it is measured, how it develops, and how it affects individuals and societies. Leading specialists from around the world analyze the multifaceted nature of giftedness, its types, its specificity in various domains and contexts, societal demands on it, its relationship to economy, recent advances and innovations in gifted education, and future trends. The Handbook goes beyond the existing handbooks: it analyzes, integrates, and presents research on giftedness that has not been considered elsewhere (e.g., neuropsychology of giftedness, talent in cinema, managerial talent). It discusses the latest advances in the fast-developing areas of giftedness research and practice (e.g., gifted education and policy implications). It presents fresh ideas (e.g., polymathy and entrepreneurial giftedness), which will galvanize and guide the study of giftedness for the future. 'This definitive handbook has collected an assemblage of the best scholars and practitioners in the field. It will be a necessary reference for all in the gifted field.' Robert J. Sternberg, Tufts University, USA 'This is an ambitious book. Complex theoretical pieces as well as straightforward discussions of educational practices are evident. The International Handbook on Giftedness belongs in one’s personal library.' Laurence J. Coleman, Daso Herb Chair in Gifted Studies, University of Toledo, USA 'This new and comprehensive International Handbook provides a valuable complement to the existing literature in several ways. It updates research summaries with new material of the current decade, particularly welcome in those few areas in which the field has perceptibly moved forward, such as neuropsychology and the provision of on-line resources. It re-examines conceptions of giftedness, with an emphasis on lifespan development. It provides fresh looks at a variety of domains.

Abstract: A womans middle age had traditionally been regarded as a time of loss and decline. But in the wake of the women's movement and other societal and cultural events, a profound shift has taken place. Far from being marginalized, midlife women stand at the forefront of a great transformation of cultural perceptions and attitudes. They are rejecting stereotypes, embracing new opportunities, and forming what this important book terms 'a new collective middle-aged identity.' Women over 50: Psychological Perspectives analyzes the challenges, benefits, coping strategies, problems, and accomplishments associated with the midlife experience. Ten chapters present the state of research (and correct longstanding myths) regarding significant aspects of middle-aged women's lives: Mind-body: illness, body image, exercise Love, romance, and sexuality Friendship and support systems 'The sandwich generation' Re-creating the role of grandmothers Retirement and financial stability Using personal empowerment to empower others Quality of life and future directions Women over 50 bridges a major knowledge gap in the feminist-psychology literature, making it an essential resource for clinicians and advanced students. It balances optimism and realism about older womens livesand younger womens futures.

Abstract: What is the unique mission of developmental psychology? How has it evolved historically? What are its current challenges? The chapters in this collection present the view that research, history and policy are essential and interlocking components of a mature developmental psychology. Patterns of human development differ markedly across historical epochs, cultures and social circumstances. Major societal changes examined by contributing authors - the advent of universal compulsory schooling, the adoption of a one-child policy in China, US policy shifts in healthcare, welfare and childcare - present 'natural experiments' in social design. Authors challenge the idea of a clear distinction between basic and applied developmental research. In sharp contrast with the view that science is value-neutral, developmental psychologists have from the outset pursued the betterment of children and families through educational, childcare and health initiatives. An historical perspective reveals the beneficial, if sometimes contentious, interplay between empirical research and social programs and policies

Abstract: This text presents an account of human development that looks at both the differences and similarities among cultures. Beyond demonstrating that "culture matters," Rogoff focuses on how culture matters in human development - what patterns help make sense of the cultural aspects of human development? Rogoff integrates research and theory from several disciplines, including cross-cultural psychology, sociocultural research, linguistic and psychological anthropology, and history. The volume examines multiple aspects of development, including childrearing, gender differences, interdependence and autonomy, developmental transitions, maternal attachment, parental discipline, and cognition and culture

Abstract: Between Culture and Biology breaks away from the traditional nature/nurture dialectic and brings together biological, psychological and cultural perspectives on development. In this thought-provoking book, the argument is put forward that the biological bases of behaviour and cultural context should be approached in an integrated fashion to properly understand ontogenetic development and that both the cultural and biological demain provide constraints and opportunities for development. It also examines the influence that various perspectives have had on developmental theory and the extent to which cultural ideas and practices reflect biological and psychological constraints. By drawing together editors and contributors who are all leading experts in their field, with diverse theoretical perspectives from a range of disciplines Between Culture and Biology develops an integrative approach to this fascinating topic while preserving intellectual depth and complexity

Abstract: The idea for this book grew out of the conference "Motivational Psychology of Ontogenesis" held at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany, in May 1998. This conference focused on the interface of development and motivation and therefore brought together scholars from three major areas in psychology - developmental, motivational and lifespan. This combination of fields represents the potential influence of development on motivation and the potential role motivation plays in development and its major contexts of family, work and school. Thus, contributors were chosen to apply motivational models to diverse settings of human everyday life and in various age groups across the life span, ranging from early childhood to old age
