    Abstract: Welche Bedeutung hat die Staatsbürgerschaft für Schwarze Deutsche? Emmanuel Ndahayo liefert mit seiner Studie einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung sozialer Ungleichheit und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe im Kontext von Migration und Eingliederungsprozessen, die in besonderem Maße von Rassismus, (post-)kolonialistischen Ansichten und fragilen Inklusionsformen betroffen sind. Die Analyse der sozialen Lage von eingebürgerten Deutschen afrikanischer Herkunft schließt eine Forschungslücke. Die empirische Untersuchung mit Hilfe qualitativer Interviews bietet daher wichtige Erkenntnisse nicht nur für die Sozialwissenschaft, sondern auch für Praktiker*innen in der Integrationspolitik.

    Abstract: Ostdeutsche werden im öffentlichen Diskurs gerne als Opfer der deutschen Einheit stilisiert. Tatsächlich haben sie sich von der friedlichen Revolution bis heute als mächtige politische Akteur*innen erwiesen. Detlef Pollack analysiert aus wissenschaftlicher Perspektive und mithilfe seiner persönlichen Erfahrungen als Zeitzeuge und Teilnehmer, wie sich dies bereits im revolutionären Umbruch von 1989 erkennen lässt. Denn die entscheidenden Dynamiken gingen nicht, wie vielfach behauptet, von einer kleinen Schar Oppositioneller aus, sondern von der breiten Bevölkerung selbst. Diese Macht des Volkes zeigt sich bis heute, wo die ostdeutsche Bevölkerung durch ihr Wahlverhalten und nicht zuletzt auch durch ihren Opferdiskurs wiederum Berücksichtigung einklagt. Am ostdeutschen Protestverhalten lässt sich begreifen, wie sich eine Bevölkerung zum Volk konstituiert - unter den Bedingungen von Diktatur und Demokratie.

    Abstract: Die tunesische Gesellschaft stand vor allem während des Arabischen Frühlings im Fokus europäischen Interesses. Doch wie haben sich die Kultur und vor allem die Geschlechterverhältnisse dort überhaupt entwickelt?Diesen Fragen geht der Band mit zwei Blickrichtungen nach: Zum einen wird die Transformation der Geschlechterverhältnisse in der Geschichte Tunesiens seit der Unabhängigkeit, der Diktatur und der Revolution 2011 bis zur Gegenwart analysiert. Zum anderen werden auf theoretisch-begrifflicher Ebene Transformationen des Feminismus und der Geschlechterbegriffe von einem Denken der Differenz und einer Politik der Repräsentation hin zu neueren dekonstruktiven und postkolonialen Gendertheorien erforscht. Betrachtet werden dabei vor allem die Bereiche der Künste, der Populärkultur sowie der Mode als wesentliche Medien der Transformation.

    Abstract: This analysis of the "foreign cultural politics as conflict prevention" shows how strongly the foreign cultural politics of Germany are still being structured by national systems, narratives and hierarchies.
    Abstract: Wir leben in einer verflochtenen und dennoch geteilten Welt: Asymmetrien, Grenzziehungen und Politiken der Differenz bringen gleichzeitig die Trennlinien und den gemeinsamen Kontext für globales Zusammenleben hervor. Diese Ambivalenz schlägt sich auch in der deutschen Auswärtigen Kulturpolitik nieder, die sich ursprünglich an den Ordnungen des Nationalen orientiert hat, seit der Jahrtausendwende aber zunehmend auch geopolitische Bruchlinien und Konflikte als ihre Arbeitsfelder begreift. Basierend auf Feldforschungen in Berlin, Ramallah, Sarajevo, Tel Aviv und Jerusalem zeichnet Jens Adam Formierungs- und Übersetzungsprozesse einer neuen Policy nach. Er eröffnet damit Einblicke in translokale Wissens- und Handlungsräume, in denen sich Ordnungen des Nationalen und Potenziale der Kosmopolitisierung kreuzen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem ifa-Forschungspreis Auswärtige Kulturpolitik 2016.

    Abstract: Around the term 'place' a process of theory formation has emerged in English-language philosophy with hermeneutic and phenomenological orientation, which in Germany has until now rarely been acknowledged. This book changes that - with both foundational philosophical contributions from relevant authors on thinking about 'place' as well as with articles which illustrate the difficulties of 'place' via individual analyses of concrete examples. It addresses among others the meaning of 'place' in literature, popular media such as film and computer games, cults and myths, as well as in the fusion of economy and everyday experience.
    Abstract: Rund um den Begriff »Ort« hat in der englischsprachigen Philosophie hermeneutischer und phänomenologischer Prägung ein Prozess der Theoriebildung eingesetzt, der in Deutschland bislang nur wenig rezipiert wurde. Der Band ändert dies - er vereint sowohl grundlegende philosophische Beiträge zum Ortsdenken einschlägiger Autor_innen als auch Beiträge, in denen die Ortsproblematik an konkreten Beispielen in Einzelanalysen verdeutlicht wird. Zum Thema wird dabei u.a. die Bedeutung des Ortes in der Literatur, in populären Medien wie Film und Computerspielen, in Kult und Mythos sowie in der Verquickung von Ökonomie und Alltagserfahrung.

    Abstract: Der politischen Ökologie ist seit ihrer Entstehung im 19. Jahrhundert ein »Regierungswissen« eingeschrieben, das Regieren vor allem als Regulieren konzipiert. Im Anschluss an Michel Foucault lässt sich daher von einer ökologischen Gouvernementalität sprechen - ein Gegenprogramm zur neoliberalen Gouvernementalität und der politischen Ökonomie. Diese Regierungsform macht Probleme wie globale Erwärmung, Ressourcenknappheit oder Umweltverschmutzung zu Regulativen politischen Handelns und organisiert dieses Handeln nach ökologischen Prinzipien.Aus literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive untersucht Benjamin Bühler diese Prinzipien anhand von Romanen und naturwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen, Theorien zur Landschaftsarchitektur und zum Design, Zukunftsfiktionen und Demokratietheorien

    Abstract: Das Valle del Mezquital in Zentralmexiko wird häufig als unterentwickelt und alten politischen Strukturen verhaftet angesehen. Auf Grundlage intensiver ethnographischer Feldforschung zeigt Gilberto Rescher jedoch, wie hier auf subtile Weise ein politischer Wandel ausgehandelt wird, der Perspektiven für Demokratisierung im Sinne wachsender Möglichkeiten zur Teilhabe eröffnet. Seine Studie geht dem Zusammenspiel der indigenen Akteure mit einer spezifischen Form der Organisation in Dorfgemeinschaften, der starken Präsenz transnationaler Migrationsprozesse und der sich verändernden gesellschaftlichen Positionierung bestimmter sozialer Gruppen - etwa von Frauen oder Jugendlichen - nach.

Kulturelle Projekte wie beispielsweise das (mittlerweile geschlossene) »Cinema Jenin« und das »Freedom Theatre« geben Aufschluss über Widersprüche und Dynamiken von (gewaltfreiem) Widerstand, Gegen-Erzählungen und Dialog. Anne Rohrbach zeigt, wie kulturelle Projekte Frei-Räume in einer fragmentierten Gesellschaft öffnen und einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu leisten können, translokale Erinnerungs- und Widerstandsräume zu etablieren.

    Abstract: Gentrification is likely the largest area of conflict in current urban development policy - because gentrification means that poorer socio-cultural groups are being threatened with displacement by the more prosperous. Although this development is obvious, German and international research has so far only concerned itself with the socio-structural upgrade of certain districts. The consequences for those displaced have so far remained unobserved. Where are they supposed to move to? What does displacement from their historic districts mean for them? What strategies of resistance exist? Using the example of Berlin, the German "capital of gentrification," the contributions in this volume pursue these urgent questions via innovative methods
    Abstract: Gentrifizierung ist das vermutlich größte Konfliktfeld der aktuellen Stadtentwicklungspolitik - denn Gentrifizierung bedeutet, dass ärmere Bevölkerungsgruppen von wohlhabenderen Schichten aus ihren Wohngebieten verdrängt werden. Obwohl diese Entwicklung offensichtlich ist, hat sich die deutsche und internationale Forschung bisher nur mit der baulich-sozialen Aufwertung von Quartieren beschäftigt. Die Folgen für die Verdrängten blieben bisher so gut wie unbeachtet. Wohin ziehen sie? Was bedeutet die Verdrängung aus dem angestammten Quartier für sie? Welche Bleibestrategien gibt es?     Abstract: This book helps in negotiating the - supposedly rigid - boundaries between the fields of art, theory, and activism. The thinking about artistic, theoretical, and activist questioning of power asymmetries along and between social categorizations such as gender, sexual orientation, class, (dis)ability, and perceived ethnicity or religion supports and inspires the fight against inequality and discrimination. The contributions show how the corresponding practices have differentiated in recent years, bringing together different forms of knowledge. They additionally show how these may be harnessed to the benefit of emancipatory movements

It looks at the 'capture' of Buddhism by militant Sinhalese nationalism in the colonial and postcolonial periods, and the framing of subsequent key constitutional legal moments. The book combines the dynamics of constitutionalism with the orbit of historical, political and anthropological scholarship on the cosmology of Sinhalese Buddhism and its relation to Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism. It explores four cases of legal-constitutional moments and offers a unique contribution to the politics and history of devolution in Sri Lanka. The book goes on to examine the way in which Buddhism, and particularly the Asokan state model, may in fact provide the intellectual resources for decentralized government beyond Sri Lanka in other parts of the Theravāda Buddhist world, such as Thailand and Burma. Presenting a timely analysis given the intensification of Sri Lanka's civil war since the election in 2005 of President Mahinda Rajapakse on an overtly ultra nationalist Sinhalese Buddhist platform, this book is of interest to scholars of South Asian Studies, anthropology, sociology, ethnicity and political science"--

    Abstract: "This book develops a notion of differences and "otherness" beyond hegemonic and hierarchical thinking as represented by the legacies of Western philosophical and political thinking. In doing so, it relates to the 20th Century phenomenological discourse, especially to Georg Simmel, Alfred Schütz, Emmanual Lévinas, and Jacques Derrida, and drafts our understanding of difference as a genuine human experience of a social and political world that is in motion and transformative, rather than static and predictable. On this basis of temporalized ontology and its normative consequences, differences are drafted as a positive social and political force and as powerful capacities of transformation and change. In practical terms, this understanding is most important for our theorizing and acting upon peace, peace-building, and conflict solution. Differences appear now not as obstacle to peace and reconciliation, but as lively and constructive articulation of "otherness" and as a positive power of transformation, emancipation, and change.This book will be of interest to students of international relations, philosophy, and political theory. "--
    Abstract: "This book attempts to approach peace from its theoretical fundations, developing a framework that, first, will address critiques of concepts of peace, which nullify this fundamental relation and are therefore called 'imperial peace' here (also 'liberal peace' elsewhere); and second, for (re)thinking of peace as a tension between 'self' and "other" anchored in a politics of the promotion and cultivation of differences. This framework thus operates as both a critique and a re-articulation of peace"--

Culture, according to Walter Benjamin, has always been an expression of dominance.Considering the example of the Berlin Conference, during which representatives from European politics and civil society discussed »Europe's soul«, Lars Alberth works out from a discourse analytical perspective which partisan narratives of European culture are developed, against which non-European outsiders these are directed, and who is thereby recognized as a part of Europe or systematically excluded and forgotten
