Abstract: "Does civil society contribute to policy innovation and if so, how? As the focus of civil society research is often more on the constraints on civil society by the state and less on the agency and effects of civil society organisations this text offers a fresh and fruitful perspective. New knowledge on communication patterns within civil society and between civil society organizations is provided, taking existing scholarship forward. It contributes to recent scholarship by reflecting on the policy making process and the possibility of policy innovations as an outcome of new forms of state-society collaboration. This book is essential reading for those interested in political science and China studies, academics, students, practitioners related to bi- and multilateral development institutions and the third sector, policy makers and journalists. It is highly recommended for anyone teaching on civil society, NGOs and/or governance in China. "

Abstract: From Pussy Riot and the Arab Spring to Italian mafia dance, this collection provides an interdisciplinary analysis of relational reflexivity in political performance. By putting anthropological theory into dialogue with international development scholarship and artistic and activist practices, this book highlights how aesthetics and politics interrelate in precarious spheres of social life. The contributors of this innovative interdisciplinary volume raise questions about the transformative potential of participating in and reflecting upon political performances both as individual and as collectives. They also argue that such processes provide a rich field and new pathways for anthropological explorations of peoples' own reflections on humanity, sociality, change, and aspiration. Reflecting on political transformations through performance puts centre stage the ethical dimensions of cultural politics and how we enact political subjectivity. Review: 'When is reflection political, ethical? This multidimensional collection on performance as theatre opens up an arena for exploration through the sheer audacity of its scope. Anthropologically informed, diversely interpreted, it is a compelling example of unexpected collaborations.' - Marilyn Strathern, University of Cambridge, UK 'The conversation between Anthropology, Theatre and Development is long and profound - and this collection deepens it further through a powerful set of analyses that draw on an impressive range of theoretical sources and geographically-located practices. Its breadth is excellent and it will strengthen the thinking, and I hope practice, of those that seek to expand the scope of performance and anthropology scholarship.' - James Thompson, The University of Manchester, UK 'This collective book proposes a lucid rethinking and critique of the field of 'theatre for development'. It is based on the premise that, because of its ineluctable embeddedness in place and locality, engaged performance has a particularly powerful contribution to make to the ever-elusive goal of sustainability. 'Relational' and 'embodied' reflexivity emerge from the rich spectrum of chapters as a compelling new paradigm for political transformation and for an effective theory and practice of sustainability; it also offers an antidote to the detached rationality of globalized modernity and expert-driven development, so essential to healing the ravages on nature, peoples and cultures caused by it. This volume should be read by those working on art and performance, development, and sustainability in fields such as anthropology, geography, politics, and environmental, social movements, and global studies. It constitutes a much welcome and illuminating voice in the cacophony of debates on the post-2015 development agenda and sustainable development goals taking place at present.' - Arturo Escobar, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

Abstract: Iran is a country which, despite its extensive coverage in the media, is often regarded as 'mysterious', 'exotic' and 'other-worldly'. This attitude often stems from a focus on the rhetoric of controversial figures in Iranian politics, rather than looking at the everyday lives of Iranians themselves. Clarissa de Waal uses her training as an anthropologist to examine the experiences of individuals, with a focus of the province of Fars in southwest Iran. This serves to highlight contemporary Iran outside of the capital, which so often dominates western understanding of the country. Using a wide range of subjects, from public sector workers and entrepreneurs to Qashqa'i tribes people (both settled and nomadic), students and the unemployed, de Waal examines the everyday existence Iran's population from a variety of backgrounds. She offers analysis and insights concerning ordinary Iranians' lives and the impact the state has on them economically, socially and religiously.

Abstract: "Through an analysis of Chinese migration to Europe, this volume examines the most pressing migration and integration issues facing many societies today, from the political and policy-based challenges of managing increasingly diverse communities, to individual lived experiences of identity and belonging. In addition to chapters on the UK, France and Italy, the book spotlights one of the most extraordinary examples of Chinese migration to Europe: that provided by the city of Prato, just 20km from Florence in Tuscany, Italy. Renowned for its historic textile industry, Prato is now home to one of the largest populations of Chinese residents in Europe, a phenomenon that is remarkable not only for its magnitude but also for the speed with which it has developed. This edited collection, which brings together twenty-seven separate contributors, deepens our understanding of the case of Prato within the context of Chinese migration to the new Europe"..

Abstract: "'Flags', 'Emblems' and 'The Past'; three seemingly insurmountable challenges which continue to hinder the peace process in Northern Ireland. For many, the responsibility for the impasse that scuppered the Haass talks and brought violent protests to the streets of Belfast appears to rest with the perceived intransigence of the Protestant, Unionist and Loyalist communities to embrace change. That this community is itself riven with internal rancour and discord should come as no surprise. Issues of social class, denominational alignment, political aspiration and national identity have historically divided what outsiders have often mistakenly viewed as a collective cultural, religious and socio-political entity. This study explores the statement by Henry McDonald that this is '...the least fashionable community in Western Europe'. A diverse group of contributors including prominent politicians, academics, journalists and artists investigate the reasons informing public perceptions attaching to the Protestant, Unionist and Loyalist communities in Ulster"..

Abstract: "The study of celebrities has been the focus of several works from two main fields: Cultural Studies and Political Communication. But up until now, such works have produced only fragmented views of links between celebrity culture, the entertainment industries, and the political systems, which this book attempts to transcend. Analyzing the movement of celebrities to politics, this book contributes to a thorough understanding of the links between media industries and the political system, providing tools for grasping the varied ways in which media capital is converted into electoral power. To achieve this goal, Nahuel Ribke has assembled a wide range of data from the United States, Brazil and Israel, providing a complex comparative view of the migration of celebrities to politics, which incorporates a historical and cultural analysis, an examination of the respective political institutions, as well as an understanding of the impact local cultural industries had on the development of celebrity politics"..

Abstract: "Wars do not simply vanish when politicians sign truces and weapons are set aside. Instead, society reimagines the war experience during annual ceremonies of war commemoration. This book sheds light on the political aspects of commemoration in Britain and Russia by investigating the media coverage of military fatalities, physical and virtual memorials, and national days of remembrance...Remembrance Day/Armistice Day in the UK and Victory Day in Russia. Nataliya Danilova argues that remembrance is a complex process of negotiating a political commitment towards fallen soldiers, national armed forces and the legacy of modern conflicts. By exercising a critical perspective on commemoration, this book explores the instrumentalisation of memory for managing civil-military relations, garnering public support for conflicts and government policies. This analysis advances our understanding of the nexus between remembrance, militarisation and nationalism thereby contributing to longstanding debates in memory studies, civil-military relations, political sociology, and international relations"..

Abstract: "Are borders passive sites where structure prevails? Are they an ordinary type of social filter? What does it mean today to have a Moroccan coffee shop in front of the Museum of the Exile in La Jonquera, Spain? The classic open-closed dichotomy of borders has become outdated. A more complex and multifaceted approach and understanding is now required. Through an analysis of new mobilities within the European Union and controls at, amongst others, the US-Mexico border, Border Shifts sheds light on the changing nature of national and regional boundaries in Europe and beyond. By identifying and examining the contradictory functions of boundaries in the EU, Ribas-Mateos explores the multiplicity of borders. She shows how borders can be simultaneously open and closed, delving into their varying degrees of permeability and highlighting the fact that borders in a global context are not simply unbounded but rebounded. The ambiguity of contemporary borders is examined in depth by considering border spaces and cities both within and outside of the EU, specifically looking at the mobilities that they create or deny.Border Shifts tackles the main issues related to global borders such as securitization, irregular migration, racism, complex gender and human trafficking with an emphasis on globalization, Europeanization and Mediterranean influences on the Arab world"..

Abstract: "This study shares the tendency, which has been widely maintained in Europe over recent years, to approach the problems of communication and the culture industry with the tools of economic theory. The oldest approaches to the mass communications media have often been criticized, and basically viewed from the standpoint of political domination and ideological reproduction. The critical aspect of the communication and culture economy, by contrast, is that attention has been focused on investigating the functions of the media in the process of capital accumulation, thereby prioritizing the problems of advertising and the mass communications media as a privileged locus for the accumulation of capital at the current stage of capitalist development. Drawing on Marxist theory and concepts, as well as on various theoretical contributions developed by prominent political economists, Bolaño develops a unique approach to understanding the culture industry, offering an interesting intervention in debates surrounding media and communication. Abstract: "When South Africa finally held its first democratic elections in 1994, the country had a much higher poverty rate than in other countries at a similar level of development. This was the legacy of apartheid. Twenty years later, poverty was still widespread. Seekings and Nattrass explain why poverty has persisted in South Africa since 1994. They demonstrate who has and who has not remained poor, how public policies both mitigated and reproduced poverty, and how and why these policies were adopted. Their analysis of the South African welfare state, labour market policies and the growth path of the South African economy challenge conventional accounts that focus only on 'neoliberalism'. They argue, instead, that policies were, in important respects, social democratic. They show how social democratic policies both mitigate and reproduce poverty in contexts such as South Africa, reflecting the contradictory nature of social democracy in the global South"..

Abstract: "We are experiencing one of those rare moments in history when subterranean politics 'bubbles up' to the surface. The demonstrations, occupations and new political initiatives that emerged across Europe in 2011 and 2012 struck a chord in public opinion in a way that has not been true of the protests and social movements arising over the last decade. This has caused ripples of discomfort in established institutions, challenging dominant ways of thinking and unsettling normal assumptions about how politics is done. Based on a multi-disciplinary, collaborative research project carried out across Europe, and from the team responsible for the landmark Global Civil Society yearbooks, this volume investigates why this is occurring now, whether the current eruptions are different to previous periods of political upheaval, and what they tell us about the future of the European project"--

Abstract: One of the few Western commentators to have lived in the region, journalist Nick Holdstock travels into the heart of the province reveals the Uyghur story as one of repression and hardship. With Islamic terrorism in China likely to increase over the next decade, how the Party responds will have global repercussions. 'China's forgotten people' explains why terrorism is on the rise in the world's most powerful one-party state, and what this means for the way we think about China

Abstract: "Culture, understood broadly, lay at the heart of contrasting right-wing strategies for government in France during the pivotal decade of 2002-2012. Looking at issues of political secularism, educational reform, televisual performance, public memory and nation-branding, Ahearne analyses how Presidents Chirac and Sarkozy sought to redefine contemporary French identity. The study extends prevailing conceptions of 'cultural policy', and shows how this constitutes a core dimension, alongside economic and social policies, of modern right-wing government. It traces, over the course of the decade in question, a dramatic hardening of the attitudes and values informing these programmes for cultural hegemony. These reflect enduring transformations in the political and symbolic landscape of contemporary France"--

Abstract: "As the velocity and intensity of migrations increase around the world, legal citizenship and ethnicity are becoming two of the most contested issues facing the modern state. Many of today's debates about immigration are focused on arguments around the positive and negative effects of increased ethnic diversity and who should be entitled to legal membership. What does it mean politically then to arrive in a country privileged as a legal citizen or co-ethnic? This book is the first to comparatively analyze the political realities of Dutch Antillean citizens in the Netherlands, and Latin American Nikkeijin (Japanese descendants) in Japan, who inherit host state access as post-colonial citizens and ethnic immigrants. Sharpe's unique cross-regional investigation considers the ways in which globalization, immigration, citizenship, and ethnicity interact as a means to understanding some of the strains and contradictions of membership in contemporary liberal democratic states. Postcolonial Citizens and Ethnic Migration will appeal to a wide range of scholars in political science, sociology, anthropology, international relations, ethnic studies and migration"--

Abstract: "Bringing together an international group of philosophers as well as political and IR international relations theorists, this collection mobilizes the insights of modern philosophy and the lessons of contemporary politics to develop a new concept of universalism that would be adequate to European politics in the context of globalization and multiculturalism. Europe is reinterpreted as a 'singular universal',- not a model that could be a source of identification, but rather a hypothetical, regulative, or virtual principle that consists in perpetual self-transgression and openness towards the other. The chapters in this volume elaborate this principle by critically re-engaging with the history of European universalism and addressing its contemporary functioning in the politics of European integration and European foreign policy. As a study in the conceptual foundations of contemporary European politics, this book will be of interest to a wide readership interested in global politics and international relations. "..

Abstract: "This study is about new media, young people, the crisis of democracy and political renewal. It addresses a mixture of traditional and new questions: What is the political? How do we understand politics in a 'network age'? Can we talk sensibly about the concept of generation and generational change? Does democracy have a future? This book presents an optimistic assessment of how digital media supports new and distinctive forms of politics. Four case studies are offered: one of performance art and protest in Russia, another investigates new media campaigns to defend the rights to freedom of speech and copyright in America, one enquires into indigenous art and cartoons as politics in outback Australia and the last explores new forms of student action in schools and the university"..

Abstract: "Despite its multiple limitations as a peace actor, the EU has been able to contribute to peace in different countries affected by protracted conflict. Going further than the debate about what the EU should do, the kind of power it represents and the pertinence of the liberal peace building model, this book explores Colombia, and beyond, to understand how the EU has used Official Development Aid to work with Civil Society Organizations and recipient governments for peacebuilding.Castaneda focuses on the European capacities to support multiple transitions to peace and proposes both a handy definition of peacebuilding at the intersection of three dimensions: security, development and democracy, and a framework for analyzing complex dynamics in conflict-affected countries, useful for designing international action.Mobilising tools from peace and conflict studies, development economics, sociology, public policy and international relations, this book will be a valuable resource to a range of scholars, uniquely providing a consideration of both sides of the cooperation programme: the international actor and the recipient society. Abstract: Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic concern. This book explores such representations, uncovering the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity, Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic foreboding. While some view them as a repository of hopes for democracy, freedom and self-realisation, others consider these developments as sources of alienation, dehumanisation and danger. This book explores such representations, and situates them within the traditions of utopian and dystopian thought that have shaped the Western cultural imaginary. Ranging from ancient poetry to post-humanism, and classical sociology to science fiction, it uncovers the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, which are centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity. Majid Yar argues that it is only by better understanding our society's reactions to technological innovation that we can develop a balanced and considered response to the changes and challenges that the internet brings in its wake

Abstract: This book explores continuity and change in British multiculturalism. It offers an original perspective on British multiculturalism and also presents an exploration of the politics of ethnic diversity in all the national contexts of the British Isles as well as the United Kingdom, This book presents a detailed exploration of continuity and change in the British debates and policies relating to ethnic diversity since 9/11, focusing in particular on key policy areas which include the prevention of terrorism and citizenship, forced marriage, and the resentment of the 'white working class'. It offers an original perspective, which assesses the evolution of multiculturalism as a policy guideline in the United Kingdom and suggests that, while the rhetoric of multiculturalism has been toned down by successive governments since 2001, British debates and policies have continued to reflect a specific sensitivity to ethnic diversity

Abstract: European institutions affect the day-to-day functioning of film, television, radio and the Internet. Their 'meddling' with media provokes many tensions, most importantly with member states including France, Germany, Belgium and Hungary. In addition, Europe's intervention is often deemed overly economic in approach, focusing on the success of an internal market - to the detriment of public interest objectives such as pluralism, diversity and universality. This handbook sheds light on these tensions through state-of-the-art, scientific contributions on various domains of European media policies. The overall aim of this handbook is to explore key concepts and theoretical approaches to European media policy: its historical development; specific policies for film, television, radio and the Internet; competition law and its effect on the media sector; and international aspects of the fragmented policy domain

Abstract: This book addresses the increasing role of queer politics within forms of Islamophobia, both by exploring the framing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues as a key marker of western superiority and by identifying the ways in which Muslim homophobia contributes to this dialectic, No one can doubt that Muslim cultures and Muslim populations are under intense scrutiny in the west and worldwide. Moreover, queer politics has been increasingly drawn into this contemporary Islamophobia. This book presents a detailed interdisciplinary study of the issues surrounding homosexuality and Muslim cultures, drawing on sociological theories of modernity and modernization, evidence of Muslim homo-eroticism in historical and contemporary context, and contemporary political ideas of queer politics, multiculturalism and international development. The book presents an original theoretical framework that describes the ways in which both queer and Muslim politics are caught up in a process of triangulation that asserts the superiority of western civilization. Using an intersectional framework, it also begins to map a way out of this oppositional understanding of homosexuality and Islam, both by drawing on the evidence of the complexity of lived experience for Queer Muslims and by challenging the euro-centric conceits of queer political and social theory
Abstract: "Momin's book is one of the best analysis of homosexuality and modern Muslim identity to appear recently. While the book is an in depth look at the current debates about Muslims and modernity, its theoretical tools are fundamental to understanding the complex notion of modernity. It reminded me of Timothy Mitchel's The Colonization of Egypt. Momin's book is a comprehensive work, exhaustively researched, judicious in its assessment and sets forth a theoretical model that will alter the way we understand Muslim modernity. An outstanding work. Its implications go to the heart of the debate about what modernity means." - Walid Saleh, Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Toronto, Canada "This book navigates deftly through the fraught relationship of Islam and homosexuality, pulling apart the quick equation of the West with the modern liberal embrace of gay rights and Islam with the opposite. Offering both personal and theoretical reflections, this is the landmark study that sets the standard for scholarship on the nexus between gay and Muslim." - Barry Adam, Professor of Sociology, University of Windsor, Canada

Abstract: This book examines the migration, integration and transnational activity of overseas Americans - American migrants - in France, Germany and the UK. It examines the reasons for their migration, introduces the concept of 'accidental migrant' and explores the question of overseas Americans' integration and identity formation, While overseas Americans are often seen as short-term corporate transferees or backpackers, there are also many Americans - estimates range from 2 to 7 million - living overseas. This book explores the case of longer-term overseas Americans - migrants - in France, Germany and the UK. What has led them to leave the United States? How does their integration in Europe proceed? This book explores both of these questions in depth, while also examining the case of American political engagement in the United States. The book draws on almost 900 survey responses and over 100 in-depth interviews carried out in Berlin, Paris and London

Abstract: Electronic book text. - Epublication based on: 9781137276070
Abstract: This collection explores how the dominant risk agenda is being embedded across welfare policy and practice contexts in order to redefine social problems and those who experience them. Identities of 'risky' or 'safe', 'responsible' or 'irresponsible' are being increasingly applied, not only to everyday life but also to professional practice, In this cutting edge collection authors examine risk thinking in a range of policy and practice contexts, including special needs education, digital exclusion, domestic violence and abuse, child protection and youth work. Four key interlinking themes emerge from the chapters. The first is how, within a neoliberal context, risk agendas can be used to justify and normalise the rationing and targeting of services. The second theme shows how the use of such agendas can in themselves redefine what is constituted as social problems, and how they are understood and responded to. Thirdly, welfare practice itself is being re-structured and re-theorised to adapt and conform to the new definitions and understandings that risk thinking has brought about. Finally, the fourth theme is how the use of risk as a negative organising discourse is not inevitable but, in different contexts, can create positive outcomes for service users, practitioners and society

Abstract: This book emerged from the online project 'A Manifesto for Media Education' and takes forward its starting points by asking some of the original contributors to expand upon their view of the purpose of media education and to support their perspective with accounts of practice. Unlike other books, which focus on a particular sector or offer a guide to teaching for particular exam specifications, this book seeks to widen the debate and offers perspectives on where media education has been and where it might be going. Note: "Much has been written about theatre's capacity to create social change. Theatre of Good Intentions: Challenges and Hopes for Theatre and Social Change, however, looks at some of the reasons why achieving such goals is hard; examining what theatre can and can't do. It critiques the limitations of theatre in the creation of social change, in order to engage in a productive discussion of theatre's strengths - and weaknesses - and theatre artists' opportunities to make change in an unjust world. This book focuses on theatre's impact on both participants and spectators, examining a wide range of contemporary applied and political theatre case studies, engaging with some of the most common forms of theatre used towards the goals of social change, including Theatre of the Oppressed, professional political theatre in performance, community-based theatre, prison theatre, and classroom drama. Theatre of Good Intentions constructs an argument advocating for artists and students to think strategically about the limitations and opportunities of theatre as a medium of social change"-- Provided by publisher. , Includes bibliographical references and index

Abstract: Drawing on children's narratives about their everyday life this book explores how children come to understand the process of socialization at home, at school and in the neighbourhood as an embodied and biographical experience, Drawing on children's narratives about their everyday life this book explores how children understand the process of socialization as an embodied, biographical experience at home, at school and in the neighbourhood. Through close analysis of what children have to say, the book shows how children actively learn from and contribute to the mundane practices and interactions of everyday social life. Through these experiences they get to know about social norms, rules and values and also develop their sense of self and identity. Working from this child-centred perspective and drawing on recent theoretical ideas about personal life and the individual, the book demonstrates the valuable contribution that childhood studies can make to long-standing sociological debates about processes of social reproduction and social change

Abstract: The First World War in German Southern and East Africa was fought in extremely different circumstances to the war on the Western Front. Very little has been written on the South West Africa campaign whilst, conversely, much attention has been granted to the military aspects of the East Africa campaign. This book returns the spotlight to both of these campaigns, seeking to understand the impact which policy decisions and the interplay of individuals made on the course of the war in East and Southern Africa. The author illuminates the roles of two key players: General Jan Christian Smuts who led the army of South Africa to take on German forces in East Africa in 1915, and the undefeated Lettow-Vorbeck, famed for being the only German general to occupy British territory. The paths of these military protagonists crossed over events in Africa from 1899 and continued to cross as adversaries in battle, until the two men, who held each other in extremely high regard, finally met in London in 1929. Although they died in 1950 and 1964 respectively, the profound effect they had on Africa still continues - as does that of Lord Kitchener who stood alone in London trying to keep East Africa out of active war. In trying to understand the interplay of the individual and politics on the military, World War One in Africa attempts to take as holistic a view of the campaigns as possible. The study, using primary and secondary material from Britain, South Africa and other countries involved, seeks to undermine Clemenceau's claim that war should not be left to the Generals. Had it not been for the ill-informed decisions of individual politicians, a great proportion of the 102,260 deaths would have been prevented and a total war debt of GBP95 million avoided.
