    Abstract: Arguments over the relationship between Canaanite and Israelite religion often derive from fundamental differences in presupposition, methodology and definition, yet debate typically focuses in on details and encourages polarization between opposing views, inhibiting progress. This volume seeks to initiate a cultural change in scholarly practice by setting up dialogues between pairs of experts in the field who hold contrasting views. Each pair discusses a clearly defined issue through the lens of a particular biblical passage, responding to each other's arguments and offering their reflections on the process. Topics range from the apparent application of 'chaos' and 'divine warrior' symbolism to Yahweh in Habakkuk 3, the evidence for 'monotheism' in pre-Exilic Judah in 2 Kings 22-23, and the possible presence of 'chaos' or creatio ex nihilo in Genesis 1 and Psalm 74. This approach encourages the recognition of points of agreement as well as differences and exposes some of the underlying issues that inhibit consensus. In doing so, it consolidates much that has been achieved in the past, offers fresh ideas and perspective and, through intense debate, subjects new ideas to thorough critique and suggests avenues for further research.

    Abstract: The role of migration for Christianity as a world religion during the last two centuries has drawn considerable attention from scholars in different fields. The main issue this book seeks to address is the question whether and to what extent migration and diaspora formation should be considered as elements of a new historiography of global Christianity, including the reflection upon earlier epochs. By focusing on migration and diaspora, the emerging map of Christianity will include the dimension of movement and interaction between actors in different regions, providing a more comprehensive 'map of agency' of individuals and groups previously regarded as passive. Furthermore, local histories will become parts of a broader picture and historiography might correlate both local and transregional perspectives in a balanced manner. Behind this approach lies the desire to broaden the perspective of Ecclesiastical History - and religious history in general - in a more systematic manner by questioning the traditional criteria of selection. This might help us to recover previously lost actors and forgotten dynamics.

    Abstract: Given the recent interest in the emotions presupposed in early religious literature, it has been thought useful to examine in this volume how the Jews and early Christians expressed their feelings within the prayers recorded in some of their literature. Specialists in their fields from academic institutions around the world have analysed important texts relating to this overall theme and to what is revealed with regard to such diverse topics as relations with God, exegesis, education, prophecy, linguistic expression, feminism, happiness, grief, cult, suicide, non-Jews, Hellenism, Qumran and Jerusalem.     Abstract: This volume, which draws on new sources, presents the Jewish salons of Berlin around 1800 as a lively and at the same time fragile network of communication. The salon society of 1794/95, the book's year of focus, reveals a culture of sociality in which highly diverse venues could become 'salons' and it puts the salons' guests and hostesses (back) in the limelight. Selected profiles of the correspondence, which sometimes lasted for decades and has now been reconstructed, allow an examination of possible interactions between salons and the contemporary discourse on emancipatory issues.

An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve , Main description: Seit einigen Jahren hat sich die Auffassung durchgesetzt, dass das Zwölfprophetenbuch eine planvoll gestaltete literarische Großeinheit ist. Eine den kanonischen Endtext ernst nehmende Exegese macht sich zur Aufgabe, diese Einheit in Aufbau und theologischem Anliegen zu verstehen. Die versammelten Beiträge gehen signifikanten, die Einzelschriften übergreifenden Strukturen nach. Besonderes Gewicht wird auf die Rekonstruktion thematischer Fäden gelegt, die dadurch entstehen, dass die einzelnen Propheten Themen ihrer Vorgänger (z.B. Tag Jahwes, Umkehr, Rolle der Völker) aufgreifen und neu zuspitzen.
