Abstract: This handbook offers a comprehensive overview of research into discourses of disinformation, misinformation, post-truth, alternative facts, hate speech, conspiracy theories, and "fake news". Divided into two sections, it provides a detailed look at the methodological challenges and approaches for studying disinformation, along with a wide range of case studies covering everything from climate change denial to COVID-19 conspiracies. The studies address how discourses of disinformation are constructed and developed, what rhetorical and persuasive strategies they employ, how disinformation can be discerned from real news, and what steps we might take in order to create a more trustworthy news environment. Authored by leading experts from around the world, and showcasing the most up-to-date methodological approaches to the topic, the volume makes a significant contribution to current linguistic research on politics, and is an essential guide to the discourses of disinformation for advanced students and researchers of English language studies, linguistics, and media and communication studies

Abstract: Elocution and speech training are among the core areas of speech science in research, teaching and practice. The volume Voice – Speech – Theater. Sprechwissenschaft im Dialog offers an update on the current scientific and practical cooperation between university speech science and schools as well as colleges of drama and music. In the transdisciplinary exchange between research and practice, the focus is on the discussion of proven and new approaches to theory and methodology as well as on the current requirements of artistic practice. Specifically, the focus will be on special aspects of gestural communication and choral speaking, laughing and crying on stage, artificial voices and "theatricality" in the art of speaking. In addition, topics such as text learning and voice disorders, which are always present in the acting profession, are also discussed. An overview of relevant research work at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg rounds off the volume

Abstract: Elaborating on Goffman's ideas of self and face, the chapter examines the ways in which patients with personality disorders manage the stigma of impulsive behaviours (such as verbal or physical violence) in psychiatric assessment interviews. Patients display three different types of stance when they describe their impulsive behaviours. They can (1) show self-reproach through evaluations, verbal marking of the exceptionality of their behaviour, or through bodily displays. They can also (2) lessen the reproach by conveying that there are also moments or aspects of their behaviour when they do not deviate from the norm. Sometimes, however, the patients (3) defy the reproach by showing joy or satisfaction with their impulsive behaviours. The three stance displays correspond to the three strategies of self-management of stigmatised persons discussed by Goffman. While Goffman discussed such strategies at the level of autobiographical time, conversation analysis demonstrates them in micro-interactional time.

Abstract: This collection highlights new perspectives on the work of Erving Goffman, revisiting his place in contemporary social theory and interactional linguistics research and its impact in surfacing new insights in conversation analysis and our understanding of Goffman's legacy. The volume outlines the theoretical foundations of Goffman's research across linguistics and the social sciences. Bringing together a crossdisciplinary group of scholars, the book is organized around these themes, with sections on self and identity, participation, and bodily practices in social interaction. Each chapter comprises three perspectives- look back at Goffman's original texts, their correlation in contemporary empirical research in conversation analysis, and a discussion of conceptual implications in relevant fields such as interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, critical sociolinguistics, and related disciplines. Taken as a whole, the book not only offers a comprehensive critical overview of Goffman's legacy in empirical work in conversation analysis and the social sciences but also the conceptual grounding for new studies to investigate his continuing role in contemporary scholarship. This innovative collection will be of interest to students and scholars in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and critical discourse analysis as well as sub-disciplines of sociology and psychology.

Abstract: This chapter extends some of the observations that Goffman made on a class of vocalisations he called 'response cries' (1978) to the domain of the multi-modal by examining an embodied practice in English interaction: a particular facial expression that 1) has particular compositional features and 2) occurs in a particular sequential position. Compositionally, this expression consists of raised eyebrows and pursed lips; sequentially, it is produced in response to a claim made by a co-participant. Instances from both institutional and mundane interaction are examined here. These show participants may or may not be gazing at their co-participant; the expression is not necessarily designed to get uptake. In this respect, this facial expression resembles Goffman's 'response cries' in being produced in the presence of others, but not necessarily designed to get responses from those others. Response relevance is seen to be shaped as much by sequential position as features of composition. This facial expression is shown, when analysed in its sequential environment, to constitute an embodied display of scepticism.

Abstract: "Attention" is a primordial topic throughout Goffman's work. Already his dissertation thesis (1953) includes a separate chapter on "the organization of attention". In his later studies he developed various concepts related to attention, such as focused/unfocused interaction or "civil inattention". Although attention is evidently a crucial dimension of the interactional order, Goffman did not elaborate this topic systematically. The study of attention was later refined and enriched by conversation analysts who underlined the role of visual displays of attentiveness in social interaction. Against the backdrop of the notion of "focused interaction", this paper examines how the psychological approach to "joint attention" differs from or amplifies Goffman's studies. Based on some of Cartier-Bresson's photos, it is shown that the contrasting set of focused/unfocused interaction needs to be supplemented by a third type of attention order, in which members are collectively oriented to an outward event. After a discussion of some of the practices of sustaining and re-establishing a focus of attention, empirical evidence is provided that certain interactional purposes can be achieved by displaying inattention. In the final discussion of Goffman's concept of "civil inattention", some historical and sociological dimensions are pointed out along which this concept can be further studied.

Abstract: People in the Nordic states – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland – rank as among the most proficient speakers of English in the world. In this unique volume, international experts explore how this came to be, what English usage and integration looks like in different spheres of society and the economy in these countries, and the implications of this linguistic phenomenon for language attitudes and identity, for the region at large, and for English in Europe and around the world. Led by Elizabeth Peterson and Kristy Beers Fägersten, contributors provide a historical overview to the subject, synthesize the latest research, illustrate the roles of English with original case studies from diverse communities and everyday settings, and offer transnational insights critically and in conversation with the situation in other Nordic states. This comprehensive text is the first book of its kind and will be of interest to advanced students and researchers of World/Global Englishe and English as a lingua franca, language contact and dialect studies/language varieties, language policy, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and Nordic/Scandinavia and European studies

Abstract: This collection highlights diverse epistemological perspectives in original research on the important role of multimodality in second language contexts. The volume explores a wide range of theoretical and methodological traditions toward foregrounding the notion that bodily action is not merely an add-on to the modality of talk but an integral part of second language teaching, learning, and interaction. Following an introductory chapter,18 empirical chapters feature either classroom or non-classroom research, which shed light on different dimensions of multimodality in second language contexts, including learning reflected in gesture, learning gesture across languages, the role of bodily action in language teaching, and the role of movement in configuring space for effective communication. Each empirical chapter follows a consistent structure detailing the research focus, the background to each study, methodology, and findings. A concluding synthesis chapter braids the insights of these chapters, drawing parallels across different methods, and pointing toward crosscutting areas for future research. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in applied linguistics, multilingualism, bilingualism, gesture studies, cognitive science, and psychology

Abstract: This book offers a new perspective on the making of Afro-Brazilian, African-American and African studies through the interrelated trajectory of E. Franklin Frazier, Lorenzo Dow Turner, Frances and Melville Herskovits in Brazil. The book compares the style, network and agenda of these different and yet somehow converging scholars, and relates them to the Brazilian intellectual context, especially Bahia, which showed in those days much less density and organization than the US equivalent. It is therefore a double comparison: between four Americans and between Americans and scholars based in Brazil.

Abstract: This edited collection investigates the linguistics of globalisation, geopolitics and gender in workplace cultures in a range of different contemporary international settings. The chapters examine how issues of globalisation, gender and geopolitics affect professionals in different workplace contexts, including domestic workers; IT professionals; teachers, university staff; engineers; entrepreneurs; CEOs of different corporates including locally based businesses as well as multinationals; farmers; co-operative leaders; NGO leaders; bloggers; healthcare assistants and caregivers. Taking different sociolinguistic approaches to exploring language and the geopolitics of gender at work in Dubai, Kuwait, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco, Nigeria, Malaysia, Turkey, Belgium, Switzerland, New Zealand, Uganda, the UK and the USA, each chapter focuses on a range of salient geopolitical issues which often have global applicability, but which may also be subject to more localised socio-cultural variation. The chapters critically discuss issues of gendered language, perceptions and representations of workplace cultures, discrimination, the role of gendered stereotyping and deeply ingrained socio-cultural myths about gender and the importance of examining the intersections of identity – all of which continue to persist as barriers to equality and inclusion in workplaces worldwide. Despite the variation and diversity in professions and geopolitical contexts captured across the chapters, remarkably similar issues of gender discrimination and persisting inequalities are identified and critically discussed, thus pointing to the global nature of these issues.

Abstract: In this book, authors engage in an interdisciplinary discourse of theory and practice on the concept of personal conviction, addressing the variety of grey zones that mark the concept. Bias, Belief, and Conviction in an Age of Fake Facts discusses where our convictions come from and whether we are aware of them, why they compel us to certain actions, and whether we can change our convictions when presented with opposing evidence that prove our personal convictions ""wrong"". Scholars from Philosophy, Psychology, Comparative Literature, Media Studies, Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, and Education shed light on the topic of personal conviction, crossing disciplinary boundaries and asking questions not only of importance to scholars but related to the role and possible impact of conviction in the public sphere, education, and in political and cultural discourse. By taking a critical look at personal conviction as an element of inquiry within the humanities and social sciences, this book will contribute substantially to the study of conviction as an aspect of the self we all carry within us and are called upon to examine. It will be of particular interest to scholars in communication and journalism studies, media studies, philosophy, and psychology.

Abstract: How do Brazilians in Germany experience the integration process? This volume investigates this question using a method that analyzes conversations multimodally – i.e., by incorporating gestures – and sets them in relation to their social context. Its findings provide exciting insights into the situation of this group, which has largely been overlooked by previous research, and reveal how integration can succeed.

Abstract: This open access book focuses on the textual features, or ‘strategies’, which form popularization discourse. In popularization discourse, research findings from academia are re-presented to make them noteworthy to society and influential for everyday life. Popularization involves recontextualization, or reimagination of findings in an everyday and newsworthy context, and reformulation, the use of audience-appropriate language to increase text comprehension and engagement. ‘Re-presenting research’ presents an empirically grounded, analytic framework for the analysis of popularization texts. Its applicability spans across disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary fields, and overarches science communication, science journalism, and research communication. The book offers theoretical background information on popularization discourse, empirical underpinning of the construction of the framework, and practical applicability in examples from multiple text types and academic fields. This book acts as a guide for those working with or on popularization discourse – whether it is to analyze it or learn about it

Abstract: This open access book deals with the role of written texts in an increasingly diverse and dynamic society, bringing together a series of studies anchored in the Scandinavian research tradition of sakprosa, which roughly translates as ‘subject-oriented prose’ or ‘professional communication’. The authors examine the written text’s capacity to transcend contextual boundaries, as a crucial factor in the importance of capturing and maintaining content as a manageable entity. The chapters each deal with a text type that manages complex content in a specialized way, including genre shifting in CSR reports, discourse networks in modern digital culture, digital and social media crisis communication, and epistemic positions in non-fiction. This book is relevant to fields such as text research, professional/digital communication, discourse analysis and literacy studies, and may also be of interest to disciplines such as history, rhetoric, organization studies, media studies/journalism, and linguistics

Abstract: In light of increasing globalization, this collection makes the case for global citizenship education as a way forward for transforming foreign language learning and teaching to better address current and future global challenges in times of unprecedented change. The volume maps a multi-dimensional approach within foreign language pedagogy to take up the challenge of ""educating the global citizen"". Drawing on sociocultural, pedagogical, cosmopolitan, digital, and civic-minded perspectives, the book explores the challenges in constructing epistemological frameworks in increasingly global environments, the need for developing context-sensitive educational practices, the potential of linking up with work from related disciplines, and the impact of these considerations on different educational settings. The collection reflects an international range of voices, attuned to global and local nuances, to offer a holistic compilation of conceptual innovations to showcase the relevance of global citizenship issues in foreign language education and encourage future research. This book will be of interest to scholars in intercultural education, foreign language education, and language teaching, as well as policymakers and foreign language teachers

Abstract: This book presents unique insights into the development of L2 interactional competence through the lens of complaining, demonstrating how a closer study of complaining as a social activity can enhance our understanding of certain aspects of language learning with implications for future L2 research. The volume employs a multimodal, longitudinal conversation analytic (CA) approach in its analysis of data from video-recorded interactions of several elementary and advanced L2 speakers of French as they build their interactional competence, understood as the ability to accomplish social actions and activities in the L2 in context-dependent and recipient-designed ways. Skogmyr Marian calls attention to three key dimensions of complaining in these conversations - its structural organization, the interactional resources people use when they complain, and how speakers' shared interactional histories and changing social relationships affect complaint practices. The volume underscores the fundamentally multimodal, socially situated, and co-constructed nature of L2 interactional competence and the socialization processes involved in its development, indicating paths for new work on interactional competence and L2 research more broadly. This book will be of appeal to students and scholars interested in second language acquisition, social interaction, and applied linguistics

Abstract: This innovative collection showcases the importance of the relationship between translation and experience in premodern science, bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to offer a nuanced understanding of knowledge transfer across premodern time and space. The volume considers experience as a tool and object of science in the premodern world, using this idea as a jumping-off point from which to view translation as a process of interaction between diff erent epistemic domains. The book is structured around four dimensions of translation-between terms within and across languages; across sciences and scientific norms; between verbal and visual systems; and through the expertise of practitioners and translators-which raise key questions on what constituted experience of the natural world in the premodern area and the impact of translation processes and agents in shaping experience. Providing a wide-ranging global account of historical studies on the travel and translation of experience in the premodern world, this book will be of interest to scholars in history, the history of translation, and the history and philosophy of science

Abstract: Im 19. und frühen 20.

Abstract: This paper argues that the integration of the multimodal and the multilingual which pre-exists modern digital media is all but haphazard. Thus their dynamics and trends that have endured and developed over the centuries call for a systematic scholarly exploration. For instance, in historical texts and contemporary social media alike preattentive engagement techniques are implemented by content producers in order to guide processing. Other manifestations of the multimodal and multilingual interplay involve orthographic aesthetics which encodes social evaluations and commentary of (linguistic) otherness in the late modernity, while visual diamorphs, brevigraphs and non-alphabetic symbols embody the prestige of medieval de luxe manuscripts. Bilingualism in contemporary social media is as purposeful and commercially devised a tool as the graphics and photos placed in blogs and vlogs by microinfluencers. The paper offers an approach that paves the way for generalisations and extension to cover further data representing other languages and periods

Abstract: Multilingual handwritten texts offer fruitful ground for the study into the visual aspects of the co-occurrence of languages, i.e. the pragmatics on the page (Carroll et al. 2013). This paper draws on the Electronic Repository of Greater Poland Oaths, 1386-1446 (eROThA) based on the oldest collection of secular texts from medieval Greater Poland, attesting the vernacular beyond glosses. Although this early court documentation was written predominantly in Latin, it includes Old Polish in witness oaths which may be metatextually and/or visually delimited. The repository gives access to the lesser known, specialised administrative texts from East-Central Europe, enriched with information drawn from the facsimiles of original manuscripts. In terms of language devices, the vernacular witness oath tends to be marked metatextually by means of items characterised by code ambiguity. Visually, boundary marking differs in salience, i.e. ranging from text blocking, which is visible on the level of mise-en-page, to features of punctuation and/or script with subtle separation effects. This study focuses on the former type of code and discourse boundary, viewed as interfaces of its bilingual nature with the visual modality of page organisation. A quantification of its patterns allows an exploration of the temporal and regional variation as reflected in six localisations of the eROThA collection over a period of sixty years

Abstract: Increasingly, academics are called upon to demonstrate the value of linguistics and explain their research to the wider public. In support of this agenda, Communicating Linguistics: Language, Community and Public Engagement provides an overview of the wide range of public engagement activities currently being undertaken in linguistics, as well as practically focused advice aimed at helping linguists to do public engagement well. From podcasts to popular writing, from competitions to consultancy, from language creation to community projects, there are many ways in which linguists can share their research with the public. Bringing together insights from leading linguists working in academia as well as non-university professions, this unique collection: • Provides a forum for the discussion of challenges and opportunities of public engagement in linguistics in order to shape best practice. • Documents best practice through a summary of some of the many excellent public engagement projects currently taking place internationally. • Celebrates the long tradition of public engagement in linguistics, a discipline which is often misunderstood despite its direct and fundamental importance to everyday life. Breaking down long-standing divisions between universities and the wider community, this book will be of significant value to academics in linguistics but also teachers, policy makers and anyone interested in better understanding the nature and use of language in society

Abstract: Resumen (revisado) The tourism research article (RA) has not been the focus of many studies. This volume offers a description of the genre in terms of section, besides an analysis of the most used language features in each section of the RA. Among these are the presence of modal verbs. Precisely, the goal of this work is to describe their use, meaning and functions in a corpus of the "introduction" and "conclusion" sections of the RA in tourist studies. The compilations included texts from leading journals in the area. The method of inquiry includes corpus linguistics tools to analyze texts as well as specific examples to show how these forms behave in the RAs. The analysis of context is also essential in order to identify the exact meanings of modal verbs, and for that reason visual inspection of each sample is mandatory. The discussion of the evidence obtained is accounted for by studies in the domain of functional linguistics. The conclusions show that formal variation exists in the introduction and the conclusion sections. This also applies to their meanings. Dynamic modality is attested to be more recurrent in the introductions and epistemic modality is preferred in the concluding sections. The functions performed by these modals are varied to feature interpersonal and textual cues in the elaboration of meaning in the RA

Abstract: The United Arab Emirates puts tremendous effort into protecting the Arabic language and reinforcing its position as the language of the country’s constitution and national identity. The country’s higher education system is built on English-medium instruction, which, alongside the worldwide adherence to native-like norms that accompanies English as a global language, appears to reduce the opportunities for Arab students to take ownership of English. This chapter focuses on the negotiable space between Arabic and English in a United Arab Emirates English-medium instruction higher education context. Data were triangulated from self-reflections by thirty Emirati students (20 females and 10 males) and interviews with four faculty members of maths and information technology who taught through English. The findings show that while English-medium instruction is considered a form of multilingual education, Arabic was believed to have a positive impact on the students’ control over their university courses. The chapter provides implications for how multiple competencies can help Arab students exercise ownership of English, reduce their linguistic and cultural insecurities, and retain their identity while learning in an English-medium instruction context

Abstract: This chapter begins by providing an overview of the many educational reforms which have taken place in the United Arab Emirates within its short history as a nation. Pushed forward by neoliberalism and globalisation, such reforms have largely focused on increasing amounts of English-medium instruction at all levels of education. In the United Arab Emirates, not only does English dominate teaching and learning, but its ‘de facto lingua franca’ status in public domains has led to heated debates centred around the effects of ‘Englishisation’ on the Arabic language, as well as its impact on local cultural identities. The chapter discusses the concept of agency with reference to student and teacher roles in English-medium instruction settings. Specifically, the sociolinguistic implications of English-medium instruction for Arabic-speaking university students are explored. It is argued that often structural constraints such as ‘English only’ classroom policies reinforce monolingual ideologies, with English also acting as a gatekeeper to academic success, so that naturally occurring translingual practice is deprecated. Referencing previous research, the chapter will conclude by advocating the need for increased choice and agency surrounding English-medium instruction in order for educational experiences to be empowering rather than subtractive

Abstract: The Engineer: English Language for Industrial Engineering is a book with a serious video game that aims at teaching students general English at B2 level (CEFRL) and technical language related to the industrial engineering business. The book contains six units contextualized in the story of a recently graduated industrial engineer who is looking for a first engineering job. The book and the video game provide an environment of linguistic immersion through functional language, reading comprehension, and the protagonist's interaction with other computerized characters. The new knowledge is introduced in the teaching book and practiced along with the corresponding missions of the video game. The exercises are related to the industrial engineering industry and are based on puzzles, tests, fictional dialogues, search and use of objects, and other skill games. This material aims to make the learning process more engaging with active exercises immersed in the fictional reality of a video game

Abstract: Thinking about language contact and language mixture has been part of the European-Western preoccupation with language from the very beginning. Starting with Plato in the fourth century B.C., it is for a long time an unexcited reflection, until the perspective changes radically in the 19th century: the normality is suddenly gone, contact and mixture become first a research taboo and only a little later a serious research focus, from which a separate discipline, contact linguistics, emerges. This book tells for the first time the history of the study of language contact up to the threshold of the 20th century and shows how critical-historiographical studies can help to classify and advance current debates (e.g. in creole studies)

Abstract: Neoliberalism, globalisation, and English language hegemony have contributed to the adoption of Western “travelling policies” in the Arab Gulf states, such as building knowledge-based economies and the implementation of English-medium instruction in schools and universities. In Qatar, as well as in other Arab Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates, this has led to ideologies of English-medium instruction and Arabic-medium instruction being in competition with each other. The result of these ideologies in Qatar has been several abrupt shifts between English-medium instruction and Arabic-medium instruction in language policies for government schools and the leading national university, and other broader efforts to preserve and promote the Arabic language. This chapter first provides an overview of the macro sociolinguistic situation and the roles, status, and functions of English in Qatar. It then describes the shifts between English-medium instruction and Arabic-medium instruction in language policies and implications for cultural and linguistic identities in Qatar. Finally, the chapter reflects on Qatar’s strong resistance to EMI among the Arab Gulf states and the future of English-medium instruction and Arabic-medium instruction in the country

Abstract: A key element in bringing long-term change in teacher practice is engaging teachers in reflection. While being a reflective practitioner is an important part of being an educator, using systematic reflection to help improve teaching practice requires training and mentorship. This chapter describes a professional development programme that utilised the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning framework in an English as a Medium of Instruction university in the United Arab Emirates. The programme aimed to raise awareness among faculty of the benefits of reflective practice and guide them through the process of designing their own classroom interventions to help measure the extent to which their teaching strategies and materials were effective in supporting students successfully attain their learning outcomes. Measures of impact are presented, while three case studies from faculty members who attended the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning programme are used to further illustrate the effect of the programme on teaching practice. The chapter concludes with tips on how to implement a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning programme to provide faulty in a multinational higher education institution with transformative professional development

Abstract: Die Ansichtskarte ist ein Erfolgsmedium des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Abstract: Phraseology has established itself as an independent academic discipline. Its applied subdiscipline, phraseodidactics, has developed somewhat delayed, but just as intensively. The articles in this volume analyze the current state of German phraseodidactics using examples and by providing a cross-section of phraseodidactic schools of thought, discourses, theoretical modellings, and methodological approaches

Abstract: The deracialization of Sweden is a research anthology that examines issues of race, racism, anti-racism and whiteness in a Swedish post-war and contemporary context. The anthology consists of 13 studies written by authors from different fields that collectively explore how the concept of race was gradually dismantled and eventually became taboo in Sweden after 1945, and how a specifically Swedish form of anti-racism instead became normative. The anthology's contributions can be seen as case studies, focusing on key persons, public debates, figures of thought, institutions, migration and marketing, based on material from archives, the daily press, interviews, social media and more. Through this empirical and methodological breadth, the anthology as a whole cross-sections Sweden’s evolution from being a race science pioneer to becoming the world's most distinctly “colorblind” country. The book is edited by Tobias Hübinette and Peter Wikström, with contributions written by Martin Ericsson, Johan Samuelsson, Ludwig Schmitz, Emma Severinsson, Mattias Tydén, Mats Wickström, David Assadkhan, Karin Idevall Hagren, Catrin Lundström, Sayaka Osanami Törngren and Jeff Werner

Abstract: This volume deals with the pragmatic dimension of negations and is oriented towards empirical studies of negatives’ meanings and functions in media and public discourses. Negation is one of our most central phenomena in human language and we use it daily for a vast range of different purposes: for rejection, denial and for expressing non-existence. Negation is certainly one of the most multidimensional and complex units in language, semantically, cognitively and syntactically, as well as from a functional, pragmatic, perspective. Depending of the theoretical framework, sentence negation in particular has been identified as a modal operator, a truth-value operator, a rhetoric device, a figure of thought, a polarity item and a marker of linguistic polyphony and as a linguistic unit with a variety of discursive and contextual meanings. There remain, nevertheless, a large number of unsolved questions regarding negative forms of expressions and negative functions within specific languages, within different social settings and throughout the languages of the world. Thus, by bringing together scholars from different countries, with studies on different languages this volume aims to shed light and contribute to new knowledge about the forms and functionality of this universal phenomenon. Linguists and pragmaticiens generally agree that the use of negatives escapes logic and pure semantic description and is therefore best analysed with tools from cognitive and pragmatic theories. Similar themes connected to negatives approached from different perspectives and examined in different languages offer a contrastive reading that actually enlarges the spectra of new knowledge presented in the books’s chapters. Based on hypotheses within pragmatics and discourse analysis, the main assumption is here that forms of expressing negatives emerge and adjust constantly and in accordance with the cultural domain and the social setting of their appearance. This is why this volume focuses on the functions of negative expressions in specific domains and types of discourses

Abstract: This collective work is a tribute to Franck Neveu, a leading expert and professor of language sciences, whose original thinking and extensive academic contribution will have a lasting impact on research in linguistics. In linguistics and/or in language sciences, because this is an old and constantly recurring debate. Franck Neveu resolutely pronounced himself in favour of the latter, although he positioned himself, equally resolutely, as a linguist. This collective volume pays tribute to this open-mindedness by bringing together contributions from renowned authors close to the dedicatee, who explore not only his areas of specialisation such as syntax, semantics and the epistemology of language sciences, but also neighbouring disciplines such as dialectology or text genetics. It has the work of Franck Neveu as its unifying theme and is intended to promote French linguistics, which he champions and illustrates. Thanks to its contributions which represent current research, this book will be of interest to both a specialist audience and one that is keen to learn about language sciences

Abstract: This chapter studies the ways in which family members draw on their mediational repertoires to interact with one another near and far in the light of theories of translocality (Conradson & McKay 2007, Kytölä 2016), family discourse practices (Tannen et al. 2007) and language and emotions (Pavlenko 2004, Dewaele 2010). Through the analysis of digital power and connection manoeuvres (cf. Kendall 2006, Tannen 2006, Tannen et al. 2007) and morality practices (Ochs & Kremer-Sadlik 2007), the chapter shows how their interactional practices differ between local and transnational digital connectivity as well as between regular and occasional family contacts. The expressions of affection in these mediated interactions are examined to identify how they differ by the various types of local to global connectivity in the data and to conclude on how the diversity of linguistic repertoires becomes a resource to articulate emotions between adults, parents and their children

Abstract: This chapter sets out to analyse what the representations of urban youth and their language practices in Norwegian media reveals about circulating discourses about diversity and immigration. The digital media archive Atekst (Retriever) was used to build a corpus composed of articles published between 2015 and 2021 in Norwegian print media. The analysis presented here indicates that “Kebabnorsk” (Kebab Norwegian) – a term commonly used to describe the speech styles of urban youths in Norway – is oftentimes mobilized in media debates to construct an axis of differentiation (i.e. us x them) regimented by ideological work where “us” is constructed as a category that encompasses “ethnic Norwegians” who uphold Western values and speak standard Norwegian, whilst “them” describes those who have ethnic minoritized backgrounds, uphold non-Western values, and speak “Kebabnorsk.” Moreover, the notions of coloniality and abyssal line help us to account for the political and historical development of the hierarchization of categorizations such as class, race, and gender from colonial times to the present. Aligned with ongoing efforts into southernizing sociolinguistics, this study expands the scope of existing research by bringing together traditions of critical discourse studies with theories of decoloniality and epistemologies of the South

Abstract: English Medium Instruction within higher education is in continuous change as it evolves to meet the needs of both faculty and students. In this chapter, the focus is on highlighting the “transformative” aspects of adopting plurilingual and translanguaging pedagogy to improve language learning, especially in countries within the Arabian Peninsula where English is not the first language. The chapter also sheds light on how instructors could be provided with theoretical frameworks that help them cater to the various multilingual backgrounds brought to the learning environment by the students, which, in turn, impact the design and implementation of teaching activities. These activities could involve plurilingual and translanguaging practices, which at times gather negative perceptions. Therefore, this chapter also examines the reasons for acceptance and the tensions faced by educators when transitioning into new pedagogical practices, highlighting the practical implications of plurilingualism and translanguaging to assist English language in education in countries within the Arabian Peninsula. The goal here is to serve the social and educational transformation of current models of bi/multilingual education in these countries

Abstract: This chapter examines the multimodal and multilingual features of 31 calendars in religious and scientific/utilitarian manuscripts produced in England ca 1300–1550 and containing at least some vernacular textual material. The analysis is guided by questions concerning the genre properties of the calendars and processes of vernacularisation. The analysis is targeted at macro-level compositional elements as well as micro-level features of individual calendar entries. The socio-pragmatic context is monitored by paying attention to situational constraints that may have influenced the use of multimodal and multilingual resources. The study brings up multilingual and multimodal patterns that reflect the conventions of the genre while also highlighting possible functional differences underlying producers’ decisions concerning language choice and visual design/composition. The findings indicate that manuscript context played an important role in what information came to be included in the calendar and how it was subsequently shaped. Some calendars can best be described as generic hybrids between calendars and other tabular genres. The use of a diachronic dataset distributed into 25-year date groups reveals some changes in the genre features of the English calendars during the ca 250 years’ span

Abstract: Community translation is defined as the translation of different types of texts intended to facilitate communication between public services and people who do not have a good command of the mainstream language(s)” (Taibi & Ozolins, 2016, p. 7). It fulfils an important social role in multilingual and multicultural societies such as Australia, by facilitating and encouraging social, economic, and political participation. Community translators play a pivotal role in the diffusion of information produced by the government and other public agencies, as they make it possible for their communities to access high quality information in the language(s) they are proficient in. This chapter will showcase the pedagogical approaches and strategies employed by educators at RMIT University in Melbourne to offer community translation courses to students from more than a dozen language backgrounds, including some new and emerging languages. Such diversity has encouraged the educators to implement reflective and student-led pedagogical approaches to overcome the limitations of sourcing qualified teaching staff in some rare languages, as well as the set contact hours imposed by the institution. The aim of the training is to produce profession-ready graduates who are exposed to the realities of the industry before they graduate

Abstract: This book offers a comparative perspective on the structural and interpretive properties of root-clause complementizers in Ibero-Romance. The driving question the author seeks to answer is where the boundaries between syntax and pragmatics lie in these languages. Contrary to most previous work on these phenomena, the author argues in favor of a relatively strict distribution of labor between the two components of grammar. The first part of the book is devoted to root complementizers with a reportative interpretation. The second part deals with root complementizers and commitment attribution. Finally, the last part presents the results of empirical studies on the topic

Abstract: This collection surveys the translator training landscape in international organizations on a global scale, offering a state-of-the-art view on institutional translator training research and practical takeaways for stakeholders. The volume’s focus on training brings a unique perspective to existing research on institutional translation, which has tended to single out such themes as agency, professionalism, and quality. The book is divided into three sections, with the first outlining the competences required of institutional translators, the second exploring training practices at the university level and ""on the job"", for novices and professionals, across a range of settings, and the third providing a synthesis of the above. Contributions draw on findings from studies in both institutional desiderata and existing training programmes from diverse geographic contexts towards situating the discussion through a global lens. In linking together competences and training practices, the book enhances collective knowledge of institutional translation and provides valuable insights for universities and institutions that work with translators on both international and national scales. This book will be key reading for scholars in translation studies, particularly those interested in institutional translation and translator training, as well as active professionals

Abstract: Dieu au Collège de France, volume 6 of the « Passage des disciplines » series, includes texts that were presented during the symposium “Dieu at the Collège de France”, which was held in June 2021, after the delays caused by the pandemic, as part of “Passage des disciplines. Global history of the Collège de France, 19th-20th century”. This research program and the series associated with it examines the genesis of scientific and literary fields of knowledge, their mapping and their evolution during the 19th and 20th centuries, on both national and international levels, from the standpoint afforded by the history of the renewal of academic chairs at the Collège de France. “Dieu” is, to be sure, not a new 19th discipline, or a “founder of discursivity”, as Foucault called the scholars who had invented not only new discourses, but, more broadly, discursive continents, new “épistemes”. God is certainly an ancient “inventor of discursivity” and the discursive continent that he has launched is considerably more diffuse than those which come from Freud, Darwin, Einstein or Durkheim, which were the object of preceding symposia, and, for the first three ones, of the first three volumes of the series. Yet, it seemed to us possible to examine, in collaboration with Thomas Römer, holder of the chair The Hebrew Bible and its Contexts, the science of God and how the Collège de France, at different times of its history, and through this institution, the university, higher education in general, the life of ideas, made way for the sciences of religion

Abstract: Eugenio Coseriu (1921–2002) was among the most influential linguists in the second half of the 20th century. Although known mainly as a structuralist and an expert in Romance linguistics, his work in fact goes far beyond this, offering an impressive and coherent vision of linguistic theory that embraces a very wide range of issues. These are presented and discussed here in the first comprehensive monograph on Coseriu’s œuvre published in English

A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas. The book brings together the current discussion of methods and assembles contributions that move along the spectrum of ethnography, mixed methods, and digital humanities and are framed by method(olog)ic reflections that the contributors have undertaken together

The expressions of affection in these mediated interactions are examined to identify how they differ by the various types of local to global connectivity in the data and to conclude on how the diversity of linguistic repertoires becomes a resource to articulate emotions between adults, parents and their children.

Aligned with ongoing efforts into southernizing sociolinguistics, this study expands the scope of existing research by bringing together traditions of critical discourse studies with theories of decoloniality and epistemologies of the South.

Abstract: This innovative collection offers a pan-Southern rejoinder to hegemonies of Northern sociolinguistics. It showcases voices from the Global South that substitute alternative and complementary narrations of the link between language and society for canonical renditions of the field. Drawing on Southern epistemologies, the volume critically explores the entangled histories of racial colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy in perpetuating prejudice in and around language as a means of encouraging the conceptualization of alternative epistemological futures for sociolinguistics. The book features work by both established and emerging scholars, and is organized around four parts: The politics of the constitution of language, and its metalanguage, in the Global South; Who gets published in sociolinguistics? Language in the Global South and the social inscription of difference; and Learning and the quotidian experience of language in the Global South. This book will be of interest to scholars in sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, critical race and ethnic studies, and philosophy of knowledge.

The project involved ‘research units’ from different Italian universities (Torino, Pavia, Bologna, Firenze, Napoli - Suor Orsola Benincasa). The papers presented here, seek to fill some gaps in our knowledge of the Hittite Empire and its epigones, and offer an updated picture of some aspects of the Hittite and post-Hittite administration in Anatolia and Syria through the analysis and interpretation of epigraphic and archaeological evidence

Abstract: The challenge of this book is to go beyond the realm of cultural diplomacy when it comes to outlining Canadian studies. Based on renewed research into the imaginary of the North, the book explores transnordic narrative spaces between Canada, the Nordic countries and the Baltic states. Although the book takes cultural studies as its theoretical basis, opposing a diplomatic perspective and arguing that there is a specificity to Canadian culture that requires the attention of the academic world, each chapter draws on theories and methods specific to the various fields of the humanities and social sciences concerned with addressing the narratives (understood in a broad sense and including visual narratives) of this northern space

Abstract: This book provides a unique analysis and description of the linguistic challenges faced by school students as they move from primary to secondary school, a major transition, which some students struggle with emotionally and academically. The study: draws on a bespoke corpus of 2.5 million words of written materials and transcribed classroom recordings, provided by the project's partner schools; combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to the corpus data to explore linguistic variation across school levels, registers and subjects; describes the procedures of corpus compilation and analysis of written and spoken academic language, showing how modern corpus tools can be applied to this far-reaching social and educational issue; uncovers differences and similarities between the academic language that school children are exposed to at primary and secondary school, contrasting this against the backdrop of the non-academic language that they encounter outside school. This book is important reading for advanced students and researchers in corpus linguistics, applied linguistics and teacher education. It carries implications for policymakers and schools looking to support students at this critical point in their schooling

Abstract: This volume provides a new set of methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of literary multilingualism in the age of national literature. Broader studies examine multilingual origins of seemingly monolingual national literatures. Case studies show that supposedly monolingual authors used multilingual techniques in their writing. The last part presents methods and theories to analyse multilingual texts within national literatures

Abstract: Exploring multilingualism as a complex, context-related, societal and individual phenomenon, this book centres around perspectives on how multiple languages are made (in)visible within educational settings in the Global North. The authors of each chapter compare and contrast findings across geographical contexts with the goal of understanding the facets of multilingualism that, on the one hand, conform across contexts, and on the other, diverge context-specifically. The chapters range from contributions with a focus on national/state planning for the development of sustainable multilingual and intercultural educational policies, to chapters that deal with multilingual practices and identities of students and student teachers as well as the consequences for language practices, strategies and policies in diversifying societies. This cross-contextual, comparative and interdisciplinary exploration of multilingualism will be of great interest to researchers, administrators, practitioners and students within the fields of multilingual education, sociolinguistics, youth culture and identity studies. Abstract: This book offers a collection of state-of-the-art conversation analytic work on the impact of different types of digital technologies and media on social interaction. It furthers our understanding of whether and to what extent the varying practices of digital interaction can be considered adaptations of the basic organisations and resources of co-present face-to-face interaction. The chapters explore the emerging practices in contemporary digital interaction and in interaction related to digital technologies. The volume is organised into four sections according to the platform or type of digital interaction: mobile messaging, social media, video conferencing, and human-computer interaction. Each of the chapters highlights an interactional or linguistic phenomenon – an action, a practice, a sequence, or a larger structure. Some of these are unique to online environments, such as emojis or hashtags, whereas some occur in both online and offline interaction, such as repair initiators and proposal sequences

Abstract: Indigenous people are pushing back against more than 200 years of colonisation and rejecting being seen by the academy as 'subjects' of research. A quiet revolution is taking place among many Indigenous communities across Australia, a revolution insisting that we have control over our languages and our cultural knowledge – for our languages to be a part of our future, not our past. We are reclaiming our right to determine how linguistic research takes place in our communities and how we want to engage with the academy in the future. This book is an essential guide for non-Indigenous linguists wanting to engage more deeply with Indigenous communities and form genuinely collaborative research partnerships. It fleshes out and redefines ethical linguistic research and work with Indigenous people and communities, with application beyond linguistics. By reassessing, from an Indigenous point of view, what it means to ‘save’ an endangered language, Something’s Gotta Change shows how linguistic research can play a positive role in keeping (maintaining) or putting (reclaiming) endangered languages on our tongues

Abstract: This second edition updates a text which laid the foundations of the field of critical ethnographic sociolinguistics, and which has become an essential reference and important teaching tool. The book lays the foundation of this approach through a longue durée ethnography of the practices, discourses and ideologies of language and nation in francophone Canada. The new edition provides an update of the development of the ethnographic sites discussed, as well as on the theoretical, methodological, political and ethical aspects of the approach

Abstract: This volume presents an up-to-date cognitive-linguistic account of the Finnish cases that would serve the interests of an international audience. As the Finnish linguistic tradition has always considered grammatical cases to be meaningful elements, this volume also addresses the extensive work by earlier scholars from different theoretical backgrounds. The volume consists of an introduction and eleven articles. The introduction presents the system of Finnish cases and provides a brief overview of the main tenets of cognitive linguistics, offering guidance for those readers who are not familiar with cognitive linguistics. Some articles focus on one case and present a unified account of its functions, others analyse a larger group of cases that form a system (the local cases), whereas yet others address the use of cases in certain constructions (such as expressions of change). This collection of articles also discusses more general topics, such as the notion of case, questions of polysemy, the traditional division of cases into grammatical and semantic, the relationship between inflection and derivation, and the role of inflection in the categories of adpositions and adverbs

Abstract: Reflexive language - the capacity of language to speak about itself - is unique to human languages yet little is known of its use in actual dialogue. Fundamental features of language are manifest in dialogic speech and in lingua francas. Both are taken on board in this book, which radically widens our conception of reflexivity in discourse. Reflexivity, or metadiscourse, is central to successful communication. It is also vital in understanding academic argumentation, essential to academic self-understanding, and at the same time it has wide applications

Abstract: This ambitious study of the proper names of the Chanson de Roland proves that it is more tightly and profoundly structured and considerably richer in depicting reality than generally assumed, and that its prehistory can be traced back (almost) to the Frankish defeat. Paris and Bédier were right on the main point close to their hearts: the song has both the thoroughly sophisticated structure (Bédier) and the imposingly long prehistory (Paris)

Abstract: Politeness is a key means by which we maintain interpersonal relationships. This book is the first comprehensive study of politeness in Finnish. Based on linguistic and pragmatic research, the book spans three parts. The first part is theoretical and historical, summarising three waves of politeness research, describing politeness as a cultural and historical phenomenon. The second part is empirical, providing an example of the study of im/politeness from outsiders’ perspectives—that, is French people living in Finland and Finns living or having lived in France. The focus group discussions ranged from definitions of politeness and differences of behaviour, to learning and teaching as well as to changes to politeness norms within society. The third part summarises the conclusions and offers an epilogue. This reader-friendly book includes exercises and recommended readings, and is welcomed by researchers and students working on politeness and, more broadly, relational work

Abstract: The publication aims to view analogy relations as heuristic magic sticks or semiotic universals through which the unknown can be heuristically opened up with the help of the known. This means that analogies simultaneously have analysing, synthesising and playful basic functions that can open up very diverse resonance spaces for us. It further implies that analogy assumptions also serve to bring the world of objects into a fruitful interaction context with the world of subjects. In this way, Cassirer's thesis that man is a genuine sign being (animal symbolicum), which can and must open up its life world with the help of cultural signs, can be exemplified very well

Abstract: This volume is the result of the 2021 session of the Linguistics and the Biblical Text research group of the Institute for Biblical Research, which addresses the history, relevance, and prospects of broad theoretical linguistic frameworks in the field of biblical studies. Cognitive Linguistics, Functional Grammar, generative linguistics, historical linguistics, complexity theory, and computational analysis are each allotted a chapter, outlining the key theoretical commitments of each approach, their major concepts and/or methods, and their important contributions to contemporary study of the biblical text. As academic disciplines and academic publishing proliferate and become more complex in a digital and global context, synthesising volumes such as this one have taken on new importance for both specialists and generalists alike. That is particularly the case in interdisciplinary areas of research. This volume therefore sets out to make linguistic theory clearer and more accessible to biblical scholars in particular, not only by careful explanation but also by specific illustration, drawing upon ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek languages within the Christian biblical corpus. The volume assists the reader in distinguishing the separate assumptions and scope of study for the separate theories, recognising methods of approach that can be applied to any of the theories, and the role of an umbrella theory to enable all the others to fruitfully interact. The bibliographies provided are structured for the non-specialist, noting handbooks, companions, and glossaries, general introductions, and foundational texts. In so doing, this volume presents not only a fully up-to-date cross-section of linguistic research in biblical scholarship but also an explicit path into the field, while highlighting important avenues for continued investigation and collaboration

Abstract: The discussions on an ethics of literature and a specifically aesthetic form of justice make it clear: the question of the aesthetic and ethical valuation and evaluation of literature has recently moved back into the centre of interest in the humanities and cultural studies. This volume brings together contributions on the themes of crime/punishment, penance/mercy or virtue/reward

Abstract: With his Manualetto, Giovanni Lupinu offers a nimble tool for students and enthusiasts who want to delve into Sardinian linguistics studies. The approach of the work is essentially historical and the organization of the subject traditional: in the first part, after providing a brief genealogical framework of Sardinian and discussing the linguistic Romanization of the island, there is a section on historical phonetics that aims to account for the elements that, from this perspective, mainly contribute to the dialectal fragmentation of the Sardinian-speaking domain; this is followed by more essential hints on morphology. The second part of the work deals with the (external) history of the language, following the model made canonical by Max Leopold Wagner: it starts from the pre-Latin substratum and goes all the way to linguistic Italianization in relatively recent times, leaving room as well for sociolinguistic considerations

Abstract: Linguistics for Legal Interpretation is a language resource for scholars and practitioners of law who engage and work with statutory interpretation. It draws on lexical semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics to both understand and solve language challenges central to the interpretation effort. In addition, this book offers best practice guidelines for dictionary use as well as an introduction to corpus linguistic methods to assist legal interpreters in determining either ordinary or technical meaning. The book illustrates the various language tools and devices by applying them to case law and legislation, and it does so in an accessible style of writing. Terrence R Carney is Associate Professor of Afrikaans Linguistics at the University of South Africa. He specialises in the language of law

Abstract: The aim of this volume is to identify, explore and compare expressions of populism in the Romance-speaking part of the world. The volume includes studies from different academic disciplines such as discourse analysis, cultural and media studies. Populist discourses are generally characterized by a deep polarization of positions and a disproportionate reliance on accusations. Populist discourses frequently reinforce existing antagonisms and undermine the traditional political argumentative style, based on the factual confrontation of opinions in the public space. Populist leaders often present themselves as the unfettered spokespersons of the people with whom they form a community of “us” in the struggle against “them”. This accords with the strong polarization mentioned earlier. The rise of populist discourses in many countries over the past decades could be due to changes in political communication. The constant and overwhelming dissemination of information in all types of media, the consequent relativization of truth, as well as a less clear political division on a left-right scale, could favor political alternatives based on personality and the highly polarized messages we see today. The question of how to reach voters in today's media buzz is a much bigger question today than it was a few decades ago, and the exposure of faces and comments has increased exponentially, which in itself can promote a certain kind of politicians. In fact, there is a strong emphasis on the leadership of populist movements, which is also a recurring theme in this book, alongside the impact of the new media landscape on political discourses. In this light, some of the recurring themes in the thirteen studies included in the volume are the denunciation – by populist voices – of the corruption of the so-called elites as well as their inability to solve concrete political and economic problems. It is also about the escalation and reinforcement of populist discourses as an expression – an act – of extreme criticism, even hatred, against traditional political leaders. These populist voices are looking for scapegoats and claiming proximity to the people, represented in the discourse as an authentic and uniform group. Other recurring themes are the emphasis on traditional values, national symbols, ethnicity, and nostalgia for a bygone era, which are effective subjects for eliciting feelings and fostering a sense of togetherness. The interplay between some of these issues is explored in more detail in the book. The chapters of the book indeed show to what extent populist discourses introduce a system based on characteristics such as unilaterality, through the designation of a threat and/or a common enemy, and on the strong focus on the rejection of the legitimacy of the adversary

Abstract: Technological advancement is reshaping the ways in which language interpreters operate. This poses existential challenges to the profession but also offers new opportunities. This books moves from the design of the computer-assisted interpreting tool SmarTerp as a case study of impact-driven interpreting technology research. It demonstrates how usability testing was used to achieve an interpreter-centred design. By contextualising the case study within the past and current developments of translation and interpreting technology research, this book seeks to inform and inspire a redefinition of the conceptualisation of interpreting technology research—not just as a tool to understand change but to drive it into a sustainable and human direction

Abstract: How can we identify successful linguistic action in recordings of institutional conversations? The theoretical-methodological contributions discuss what the basis for evaluation is, how it can be collected empirically, and how good practice can be identified in the discussion. The empirically oriented contributions analytically elaborate concrete forms of good practice for different institutional settings

Abstract: This edited collection explores plurilingual education in the unique English medium instruction (EMI) context of the Arabian Peninsula. The book argues that integrating a plurilingual pedagogy alongside current EMI in the region could enhance students’ learning and contribute to a language policy that embraces linguistic diversity while fostering regional identity. It brings together the work of experts in Arabic and English language policy and planning, presenting empirical research relating to plurilingual pedagogical practices within the region. The book offers a range of recommendations for educators on how to integrate plurilingual pedagogies in classroom teaching. This becomes more important since many educators in the region are non-Arabic speakers and are teaching students with diverse linguistic backgrounds through English. With a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the linguistic landscape in the Arabian region, this book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, and students in the fields of applied linguistics, language education, teacher education, and EMI
