    Abstract: The twentieth century has been called a century of war. Wars and colonization leave deep chasms between countries. In the case of Japan, these frictions have manifested themselves as historical issues. The history since World War II has also been a history of trying to overcome the hostility surrounding these issues. Since the end of the war there have been various attempts at reconciliation, and indeed, periods in which Japan has enjoyed good relations with China and also with South Korea. Despite that, historical issues have overheated in the twenty-first century, and their effects may extend beyond Japan's relations with China and South Korea to impact its relations with the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe. --

Marginalized citizens in search of protection and support may look to criminal leaders, gangs and mafias rather than to politicians and state agencies.     Abstract: "Rights Make Might examines why the three most salient minority groups in Japan all expanded their activism since the late 1970s and chronicles the galvanizing effects of global human rights ideas and institutions on local social movements. The prehistory of the three groups reveals that minority politics in Japan before the 1970s featured politically dormant Ainu - an indigenous people in northern Japan -, active but unsuccessful Koreans - a stateless colonial legacy group -, and active and established Burakumin - a former outcaste group that still faced social discrimination. Despite the unfavorable domestic political environment, the infusion of global human rights ideas and the opening of international human rights arenas as new venues for contestation transformed minority activists' movement actorhood, or subjective understanding about their position and entitled rights in Japan, as well as the views of the Japanese public and political establishment toward those groups, thus catalyzing substantial gains for all three groups. Having benefited from global human rights, all three groups also repaid their debt by contributing to the consolidation and expansion of global human rights principles and instruments. Drawing on interviews and archival data, Rights Make Might offers a detailed historical and comparative analysis of the co-constitutive relationship between international human rights activities and local politics that contributes to our understanding of international norms, multilateral institutions, social movements, human rights, and ethno-racial politics."

    Abstract: In this innovative legal history of economic life in the Western Indian Ocean, Bishara examines the transformations of Islamic law and Islamicate commercial practices during the emergence of modern capitalism in the region. In this time of expanding commercial activity, a mélange of Arab, Indian, Swahili and Baloch merchants, planters, jurists, judges, soldiers and seamen forged the frontiers of a shared world. The interlinked worlds of trade and politics that these actors created, the shared commercial grammars and institutions that they developed and the spatial and socio-economic mobilities they engaged in endured until at least the middle of the twentieth century. This study examines the Indian Ocean from Oman to India and East Africa over an extended period of time, drawing together the histories of commerce, law and empire in a sophisticated, original and richly textured history of capitalism in the Islamic world

    Abstract: This volume is an updated and expanded version of the authors original book, first published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and based on his cum laude doctoral dissertation. That volume discussed how the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence drowned in the first war between a communist and a non-aligned state. This new edition reproduces the original text, but supplements it considerably in light of subsequent developments and official records and reports only later released or leaked to the public. It places Sino-Indian relations in the wider, current context of the rise of China, the position of Tibet and the disorganised state of Asia. The border dispute did not prevent substantial economic relations developing between the two countries and visits taking place at the highest political level. But it still gives rise to almost daily incursions, and in the current climate, the risk of a clash is growing, as forces have been strengthened and most of the Line of Actual Control has not been demarcated. This thought-provoking volume sheds light on what is still a complex and uneasy relationship

    Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of international cultural heritage law and policy since 1945. It sets out the international (including regional) law currently governing the protection and safeguarding of cultural heritage in peace time, as well as international cultural policy-making. In addition to analysing the relevant legal frameworks, it focuses on the broader policy and other contexts within which and in response to which this law has developed. Following this approach, attention is paid to: introducing international cultural heritage law and its place in international law generally; illicit excavation and the illegal trade in archaeological finds; protection of underwater cultural heritage; the relationship between cultural heritage and the environment; intangible aspects of heritage and their safeguarding; cultural heritage as traditional knowledge and creativity; regional approaches to protection; and human rights issues related to cultural heritage. In addition, newly-emerging topics and challenges are addressed, including the relationship between cultural heritage and sustainable development and the gender dynamics of cultural heritage. Providing both a perfect introduction to cultural heritage law and deeper reflection on its challenges, this book should be invaluable for students, scholars, and practitioners in the field.
