It has been handed down in almost 200 manuscripts and 33 Upper German and 8 Low German printed editions and was disseminated all over German-speaking Europe and in the Netherlands and Scandinavia. The work is a major exception among German legendries in that it does not derive primarily from Latin sources but almost exclusively from German verse and prose legends (»Passional«, »Märterbuch«, Hartmann von Aue's »Gregorius«, Ebernand von Erfurt's »Heinrich und Kunigunde«, Reinbot von Durne's »Georg« etc.). Its status was that of the major vernacular hagiographic source (for the Mastersingers, Jakob Mennel etc. as well as for artists) and its popularity made it a target for one of Luther's lampoons in 1535. Three of these--The School of Venus (1680), Venus in the Cloister (1725), and A Dialogue Between a Married Lady and a Maid (1740)--are famous "whore dialogues," dramatic conversations between an older, experienced woman and a younger, inexperienced maid. Previously unavailable in an affordable edition, these dialogues combine sex; education,medical folklore, and erotic literature in a decidedly proto-pornographic form.     Abstract: Emphasising a positive approach to dealing with terrorism (the carrot), this book provides a critique of deterrence policy (the stick) which can be ineffective and even counterproductive, and proposes three alternative and effective anti-terrorist policies: Decentralisation reduces vulnerability to terrorist attacks. A system with many different centres is more stable due to its diversity, enabling one part to substitute for another; Positive incentives can be offered to actual and prospective terrorists not to engage in violent acts. Incentives include: reintegrating terrorists into society, welcoming repentents and offering them valued opportunities; and Diverting attention by naming several terrorist groups potentially responsible for a particular terrorist act. The government thus supplies more information than the terrorist responsible would wish

It includes numerous examples of current practice from 12 OECD member countries (Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Slovak Republic, Sweden, UK) as well as the European Commission. It does not deal with online service delivery nor with ICT applications to elections (e.g. e-voting) although some of the issues discussed here, such as providing information online, may be relevant for both. Finally, the book suggests 10 guiding principles for successful online consultation and identifies five key challenges for online citizen engagement in policy-making.

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables that have shaped their evolution.     Abstract: This fascinating study investigates the experience of English poverty between 1700 and 1900 and the ways in which the poor made ends meet. The phrase 'economy of makeshifts' has often been used to summarise the patchy, desperate and sometimes failing strategies of the poor for material survival. In The poor of England some of the leading, young historians of welfare examine how advantages gained from access to common land, mobilisation of kinship support, resorting to crime, and other marginal resources could prop up struggling households. The essays attempt to explain how and when the poor secured access to these makeshifts and suggest how the balance of these strategies might change over time or be modified by gender, life-cycle and geography. This book represents the single most significant attempt in print to supply the English 'economy of makeshifts' with a solid, empirical basis and to advance the concept of makeshifts from a vague but convenient label to a more precise yet inclusive definition.

    Abstract: During and especially after the Second World War, a group of leading scholars who had been perilously close to the war's devastation joined others fortunate enough to have been protected by distance in an effort to redefine and reinvigorate Western liberal ideals for a radically new age. Treating evil as an analytical category, they sought to discover the sources of twentieth-century horror and the potentialities of the modern state in the wake of western desolation. In the process, they devised strikingly new ways to understand politics, sociology and history that reverberate still. In this major intellectual history, Ira Katznelson examines the works of Hannah Arendt, Robert Dahl, Richard Hofstadter, Harold Lasswell, Charles Lindblom, Karl Polanyi, and David Truman, detailing their engagement with the larger project of reclaiming the West's moral bearing. In light of their epoch's calamities these intellectuals insisted that the tradition of Enlightenment thought required a new realism, a good deal of renovation, and much recommitment. This array of historians, political philosophers, and social scientists understood that a simple reassertion of liberal modernism had been made radically insufficient by the enormities and moral catastrophes of war, totalitarianism, and holocaust. Confronting their period's dashed hopes for reason and knowledge, they asked not just whether the Enlightenment should define modernity, but which Enlightenment we should wish to have. Decades later, in the midst of a new type of war and reanimated discussions of the concept of evil, we share no small stake in assessing their successes and limitations.

    Abstract: Main description: In order to combine their facts and make sense of them, writers of history in the 16th century made use of literary genres and representational strategies. Using four chronicles, the 'Truchsessenchronik', Küng's Wurttemberg Chronicle, the 'Zollernchronik' and the 'Zimmerische Chronik', Professor Wolf examines the function of a literarisation of history, together with the political and dynastic interests involved and the authors' understanding of truth and their attempts to interpret the world.

    Abstract: Die Medien repräsentieren den älteren türkischen Migranten oft als traditionalistischen "Islam-Macho", der die Integration seiner Frau und seiner Töchter in die Gastgesellschaft bremst oder aktiv behindert. Diese weit verbreitete Stereotype beruht überwiegend auf "Bildern aus zweiter Hand". Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als "Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte" ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in "zwei Heimaten". Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen
