    Abstract: Das Nachdenken über Moral gilt gemeinhin als Domäne der Philosophie. Um so überraschender mag es erscheinen, daß mit Niklas Luhmann einer der einflußreichsten Vertreter der Soziologie des 20. Jahrhunderts sich seit den spätern 60er Jahren bis kurz vor seinem Tod im Jahre 1998 kontinuierlich mit moraltheoretischen Fragen auseinandergesetzt hat. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert erstmals die wichtigsten Texte Luhmanns zu einer Theorie der Moral. Luhmanns großes Projekt - eine Theorie der Gesellschaft - bestimmt auch seinen Blick auf die Moral, die er nicht, wie in der Philosophie üblich, substantiell betrachtet, sondern funktional. In einer individualisierten Gesellschaft stellt sich aus seiner Perspektive stets die Frage, wie Handlungskoordinationen auf der Ebene der Interaktionen möglich sind. Hier gewinnen moralische, aber auch rechtliche Regeln und Konventionen ihre Bedeutung. Um diese zu erfassen, bedarf es laut Luhmann einer Reflexionstheorie der Moral, deren Konturen in den hier versammelten Aufsätzen sichtbar werden.

    Abstract: When Muslim women from diverse national and cultural contexts meet one another through transnational dialogue and networking, what happens to their sense of identity and social agency? Addressing this question, Meena Sharify-Funk encountered women activists and intellectuals in North America, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia - women whose lives and visions have become linked by 'the transnational' despite their differing circumstances and intellectual backgrounds. The resultant work provides a rich and cliché-bursting account of women's reflections on a wide range of topics including: the status of women in Islam, the role of women as interpreters of religious norms, the relationship between secular and religious forms of self-identification, perceptions of Islamic-Western relations, experiences of marginalization, and opportunities for empowerment. Giving careful attention both to common threads in Muslim women's experiences and to the unique voices of remarkable women, this is a compelling account of conversations that are bringing new energy and dynamism into women's activism in a world of collapsing distances.

    Abstract: In dieser Studie wird das vielschichtige, historisch variable Verhältnis von Individualität und Moderne mit Blick auf den Beitrag der Religion in den USA rekonstruiert. Dabei wird der Einfluss religiöser Orientierungen nicht nur im Sinne eines übergeordneten 'Weltbildes', sondern bis in die Strukturen alltäglicher Lebensführung und individueller Selbstbeschreibungen hinein verfolgt. Die bis heute ungebrochene Wirkmacht von Transzendenzbezügen in der amerikanischen Gesellschaft weist den Weg zu den Besonderheiten der 'amerikanischen Moderne' und wirft ein Licht auf die Wurzeln einer schwierig gewordenen amerikanisch-europäischen Verständigung.

    Abstract: Die Studie zeichnet die migrationspolitischen Diskurse der türkischen Dachverbände in Deutschland nach und analysiert deren Bedeutung für die Formierung des neuen Politikfeldes der Integrationspolitik. Dabei erweist sich, dass der Paradigmenwechsel von der Ausländer- zur Integrationspolitik in den letzten Jahren wesentlich durch die offiziellen Vertretungen der türkischen Community mit geprägt worden ist. Die Studie füllt damit nicht nur - empirisch gestützt - ein Desiderat in der Migrationsforschung, sondern versucht zudem, durch eine theoretische Reflexion eine der wesentlichen formativen Unterscheidungen im Feld der Migrationspolitik als auch in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Beobachtung aufzuweisen, nämlich die zwischen einer additiven vs. einer exklusiven Konstruktion von Alter-Ego-Verhältnissen.

    Abstract: Die nächste Gesellschaft ist die Computergesellschaft. Sie wird sich von der Buchdruckgesellschaft der Moderne so dramatisch unterscheiden wie diese von der Schriftgesellschaft der Antike. Hatte es die Antike mit einem Überschuß an Symbolen zu tun und die Moderne mit einem Überschuß an Kritik, so wird sich die nächste Gesellschaft durch einen Überschuß an Kontrolle auszeichnen. Auf die Struktur eines Überschusses an Sinn, so hat Niklas Luhmann spekuliert, muß eine Kultur mit der selektiven Handhabung dieses Überschusses antworten, wenn die Gesellschaft die Einführung eines neuen Kommunikationsmediums überleben können soll. Die in diesem Band versammelten Studien arbeiten diese These aus und zeigen, wie die Soziologie mit relativ einfachen Ideen vielfach vernetzte und scheinbar opake Phänomene anschaulich werden lassen kann.

However, with the emergence of the cold war in the 1950s, Japan was urged to establish the Self-Defense Forces as a way to bolster Western defenses against the tide of Asian communism. Although the SDF's role is supposedly limited to self-defense, Japan's armed forces are equipped with advanced weapons technology and the world's third-largest military budget. Sabine Frühstück draws on interviews, historical research, and analysis to describe the unusual case of a non-war-making military. As the first scholar permitted to participate in basic SDF training, she offers a firsthand look at an army trained for combat that nevertheless serves nontraditional military needs.

    Abstract: Ausgehend von den anhaltenden Debatten um das islamische Kopftuch in staatlichen Bildungseinrichtungen Deutschlands und Frankreichs analysiert Schirin Amir-Moazami die Logiken der Diskursproduktion über den Islam und bringt die Argumente der Kritiker mit den Stimmen Kopftuch tragender junger Musliminnen ins Gespräch.Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie die wachsende Partizipation sichtbarer Muslime, hier symbolisiert durch das Kopftuch, im dominanten Diskurs beider Länder Abwehrreaktionen provoziert und der Islam mehrheitlich als Gegenkategorie zu jeweils national geprägten Säkularitätskonzepten begriffen wird. Heute läßt sich ein immer größeres Auseinanderklaffen der Praxis der Soziologie, der Theorie der Politik und des Glaubens an die Idee der Gesellschaft beobachten. Um einen Ausweg aus dieser Krise zu finden, sollte, so die provokative These dieses Buchs, diese Spannung bis zum äußersten ausgereizt werden.Bruno Latour, der die etablierten Grenzen zwischenWissenschaft, Kultur, Technik und Natur eingerissen hat, schlägt vor, zwei unterschiedliche Konzepte von Gesellschaft zu unterscheiden. Der einen Auffassung zufolge ist "Gesellschaft" eine unveränderliche abstrakte Entität, die ihren Schatten auf andere Bereiche wirft: auf die Wirtschaft, das Recht, die Wissenschaft etc. Nach der anderen hingegen ist "Gesellschaft" notwendig instabil: eine Verbindung überraschender Akteure, die die einlullende Gewißheit, einer gemeinsamen Welt anzugehören, in Frage stellen. An den Orten dieser professionellen Kreativszenen werden Informationen, Wissen und Trends verhandelt. Als urbane Ethnographie erzählt diese empirische Studie eine Geschichte über Berlin als sozialem Ort, an dem sich Konturen zukünftiger Arbeitsprozesse im Urbanen zu erkennen geben.

    Abstract: In der vorliegenden Untersuchung werden Migrantinnen nach ihren Utopien befragt, ihren »kleinen Träumen« und »großen Sehnsüchten« nachgespürt. Dabei gelingt es, die enge Verflochtenheit zwischen utopischem Denken und migrantischen Praxen herauszuarbeiten und Migrantinnen als kritisch-politische Mitglieder einer demokratischen Gesellschaft darzustellen. Die utopischen Beiträge erscheinen ungetrübt als paradox, naiv und gleichzeitig politisch radikal, strategisch durchdacht. Einseitige Forschungsperspektiven, die Migrantinnen entweder zu »Heldinnen« verklären oder sie in der Rolle als »Opfer« festzurren, werden hier gleichzeitig problematisiert und irritiert.

Both disability studies and queer theory are centrally concerned with how bodies, pleasures, and identities are represented as "normal" or as abject, but Crip Theory is the first book to analyze thoroughly the ways in which these interdisciplinary fields inform each other. Drawing on feminist theory, African American and Latino/a cultural theories, composition studies, film and television studies, and theories of globalization and counter-globalization, Robert McRuer articulates the central concerns of crip theory and considers how such a critical perspective might impact cultural and historical inquiry in the humanities.     Abstract: The complicated link between women and religion in the Middle East has been a source of debate for centuries, and has special resonance today. Whether religion reinforces female oppression or provides opportunities for women - or a combination of both - depends on time, place and circumstance. This book seeks to contextualize women's roles within their religious traditions rather than through the lens of a dominant culture. Gender, Religion and Change in the Middle East crosses boundaries and borders, and will appeal to a global audience. This book provides a comprehensive survey of women in Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities in the Middle East during the last two centuries. The authors consider women's defined roles within these religious communities, as well as exploring how women themselves develop and apply their own strategies within religious societies. The wide-ranging accounts draw on case studies from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon since 1800. Throughout, the authors challenge our understanding of patriarchy to offer a more nuanced account. Barbara Adam beschreibt, welche Mittel und Wege die einzelnen finden und erfinden, um Zeit für soziale Interaktionen, Zeit für den Körper (für Krankheit wie Heilung), die Umwelt, Zeit für das Lernen, aber auch für Muße und Luxus zu gewinnen. Damit besitzt, so die These der Autorin, der Umgang des einzelnen mit der Zeit die typische Doppeldeutigkeit aller Dimensionen der Gesellschaft der Individuen: Jeder kann gegen den Zwang der Zeit auf eigene Weise vorgehen, er ist zugleich aber gezwungen, einen eigenen Zeithaushalt zu schaffen.
