    Abstract: Das Konzept »transnationaler Räume« hat der Migrationssoziologie neue Impulse gegeben. Wenig Beachtung hingegen fand bisher die Pendelmigration deutsch-polnischer Doppelstaatler aus Oberschlesien - einer Region, die aus der ehemaligen Peripherie Deutschlands wie Polens inzwischen mitten in ein vereintes Europa gerückt ist.Dabei macht die wechselvolle Geschichte dieser historischen Grenzregion sie geradezu zu einem Paradebeispiel für das Phänomen »Transnationalismus«. Die hier analysierten Lebensgeschichten ihrer Einwohner_innen werfen Schlaglichter auf europäische Diskurse über soziale und politische Partizipation sowie auf individuelle und kollektive Identitätsbildung.

Insbesondere in den Lebensbereichen Arbeiten, Wohnen und Bildung stellt sich die Frage, wie Integration gelingen kann. Der vorliegende Sammelband setzt sich umfassend mit den Themen Migration und Migrationspolitik, Segregation und Integration, mit Konzepten wie Hybridität, diversity und Transkulturalität im integrationstheoretischen Diskurs auseinander. Er bleibt jedoch nicht auf der theoretisch-konzeptionellen Ebene, sondern zeigt Handlungsmöglichkeiten in der Praxis auf. Empirische Fallstudien wie z.B. zur Segregation von Migrant(inn)en in Großstädten, zu Wohnstandortentscheidungen türkeistämmiger Eigentümer(innen) der zweiten Generation und zu Maßnahmen städtischer Integrationspolitik in Europa zeigen, vor welchen Herausforderungen Politik und Gesellschaft stehen. Die Autor(inn)en setzen sich kritisch mit der gegenwärtigen Forschungspraxis und Integrationspolitik auseinander.     Abstract: International migration and the increasing diversity of the population are highly topical social-political issues in Germany. Local challenges in municipalities and residential areas are tangible and visible. The question as to how integration can be successful is particularly pressing in the spheres of work, housing and education. This edited volume comprehensively addresses the themes migration and migration policy, segregation and integration, and considers concepts such as hybridity, diversity and transculturality in integration theory discourse. However, discussion is not restricted to the theoretical-conceptual level but includes illustration of possible courses of action in practice. Empirical case studies on, for example, the segregation of migrants in large cities, the neighbourhood choice of second-generation Turkish-origin homeowners and urban integration policy measures in Europe, reveal the challenges faced by politics and society. The authors critically review current research practice and integration policy. They provide examples of improved integration in municipalities, residential areas, the education system, the housing market and the economy. Theoretical analyses are linked to planning and policy recommendations.

Once the domain of elitist practitioners and scholars, the governance of cultural heritage and the destiny of iconic artefacts have emerged as the new frontier of international law, making headlines and attracting the varied interests of academics and policy-makers, museum curators and collectors, human rights activists and investment lawyers, and artists and economists, just to mention a few. The return of cultural artefacts to their legitimate owners, the recovery of underwater cultural heritage, and the protection and promotion of artistic expressions are just some of the pressing issues addressed by this book. Contemporary intersections between art, cultural heritage and the market are complicated by a variety of ethical and legal issues, which often describe complex global relations. Should works of art be treated differently from other goods? What happens if a work of art, currently exhibited in a museum, turns out to have originally been looted? What is the relevant legal framework? What should be done with ancient shipwrecks filled with objects from former colonies? Should such objects be kept by the finders? Should they be returned to the country of origin? This book addresses these different questions while highlighting the complex interplay between legal and ethical issues in the context of cultural governance. The approach is mainly legal, but interdisciplinary aspects are considered as well

    Abstract: This research examines the role of prosecutors within the United States and in Switzerland and is completed by an overview of the prosecution institutions in France and Germany. The research recognizes that despite seemingly very different legal traditions and structures, prosecutors in these systems are similar enough that each system might learn from the others. Drawing upon the experiences of other nations, this research proposes solutions to the problems identified in connection with the position and powers of public prosecutors in the United States. Furthermore, it outlines the problems related to the increase of prosecutorial power and the lessons the European criminal justice systems surveyed can draw from the experience in the US. In terms of methodology, this research not only considers formal legal provisions but also systematic structural factors, academic literature and statistics revealing how the law and governing principles actually work in practice.

    Abstract: This anthology illustrates how law and economics is developing in Europe and what opportunities and problems - both in general and specific legal fields - are associated with this approach within the legal traditions of European countries.     Abstract: Sechzig Künstler aus zweiundzwanzig afrikanischen Ländern befassen sich thematisch mit der Göttlichen Komödie von Dante Alighieri. The volume comprises nine essays by prominent Canadianists from Austria, Germany and Canada who investigate in comparative fashion the problems of emigration / immigration to and integration in North America and some European countries, especially Austria and France. They inquire how this challenge has been met in Canada since the official adoption of multiculturalism and reflect on the possibility of Canada serving as a model for Europe. While contemporary novels by immigrants to Canada provide evidence of successful integration, ethnic autobiographies remind us of the existence of problems and prejudices in former times. The tensions experienced in the course of a transcultural transfer are shown to be a potential source of inspiration, with authors of Caribbean background providing fruitful examples. The waves of immigration from Austria are also described as is the specific approach to the challenge of immigration in the province of Quebec, through the adoption of the concept of interculturalism. Both the problems linked to immigration in France and the issue of the millions of undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the USA are considered.

    Abstract: This book examines in detail both historical and current legal concepts of ‘religious cultural heritage’ within the context of the European continent. The latter group is primarily based on the variety of sacred cultural elements emanating from the different religious traditions of the peoples of Europe, which are deemed worthy of protection and preservation due to their outstanding value, in terms of their social, cultural and religious significance. In view of this, the study provides evidence of the European States’ active involvement with their sacred/cultural treasures, on the basis of the political and legal foundations of neutrality and pluralism. Furthermore, the book analyzes all relevant international legislative instruments (i.e. the plethora of EU, CoE and UNESCO norms), as well as all major European legislative patterns, in light of their significance for the aforementioned aspects of pluralism and neutrality. The interdisciplinary references listed at the end of each chapter provide an additional incentive for further reading on the subject matter. The most important finding to emerge from the study is that there is a shared legal ethos in Europe that imposes a duty of appropriate care concerning the vast variety of sacred cultural goods, and the religious cultural heritage in general, as an invaluable repository of European cultural capital. It also considers the sui generis nature of this capital: like any other type of asset, it may deteriorate or fade over time, necessitating investment in its preservation or refurbishment; nevertheless, like no other, this particular capital maintains a distinct cultural value, as it contains an additional characteristic of ‘sacredness’ expressed in the form of its ‘religious character,’ the latter being analyzed as a triptych of religious memory, religious aesthetics and religious beliefs
