    Abstract: States have long been wary of putting international migration on the global agenda. As an issue that defines sovereignty - that is, who enters and remains on a state's territory - international migration has called for protection of national prerogatives and unilateral actions. However, since the end of World War I, governments have sought ways to address various aspects of international migration in a collaborative manner. This book examines how these efforts to increase international cooperation have evolved from the early twentieth century to the present. The scope encompasses all of the components of international migration: labor migration, family reunification, refugees, human trafficking and smuggling, and newly emerging forms of displacement (including movements likely to result from global climate change). The final chapter assesses the progress (and lack thereof) in developing an international migration regime and makes recommendations towards strengthening international cooperation in this area.

    Abstract: Die Globalisierung ist keineswegs als ein linearer und einheitlicher Prozess zu begreifen, wie dies in einer rein ökonomistischen Deutung oft angezeigt wird.     Abstract: Internationale Migration und die zunehmende Diversität der Bevölkerung sind hochaktuelle gesellschaftspolitische Themen in Deutschland. Die Herausforderungen vor Ort sind in den Kommunen und Wohnquartieren spür- und sichtbar. Insbesondere in den Lebensbereichen Arbeiten, Wohnen und Bildung stellt sich die Frage, wie Integration gelingen kann. Der vorliegende Sammelband setzt sich umfassend mit den Themen Migration und Migrationspolitik, Segregation und Integration, mit Konzepten wie Hybridität, diversity und Transkulturalität im integrationstheoretischen Diskurs auseinander. Er bleibt jedoch nicht auf der theoretisch-konzeptionellen Ebene, sondern zeigt Handlungsmöglichkeiten in der Praxis auf. Empirische Fallstudien wie z.B. zur Segregation von Migrant(inn)en in Großstädten, zu Wohnstandortentscheidungen türkeistämmiger Eigentümer(innen) der zweiten Generation und zu Maßnahmen städtischer Integrationspolitik in Europa zeigen, vor welchen Herausforderungen Politik und Gesellschaft stehen. Die Autor(inn)en setzen sich kritisch mit der gegenwärtigen Forschungspraxis und Integrationspolitik auseinander.     Abstract: International migration and the increasing diversity of the population are highly topical social-political issues in Germany. Local challenges in municipalities and residential areas are tangible and visible. The question as to how integration can be successful is particularly pressing in the spheres of work, housing and education. This edited volume comprehensively addresses the themes migration and migration policy, segregation and integration, and considers concepts such as hybridity, diversity and transculturality in integration theory discourse. However, discussion is not restricted to the theoretical-conceptual level but includes illustration of possible courses of action in practice. Empirical case studies on, for example, the segregation of migrants in large cities, the neighbourhood choice of second-generation Turkish-origin homeowners and urban integration policy measures in Europe, reveal the challenges faced by politics and society. The authors critically review current research practice and integration policy. They provide examples of improved integration in municipalities, residential areas, the education system, the housing market and the economy. Theoretical analyses are linked to planning and policy recommendations.

    Abstract: Als Folge extremer globaler Ungleichheit zwischen armen und reichen Ländern hat die Migration seit den 1990er-Jahren stark zugenommen. Der britische Ökonom, der sich in seinen Büchern mit z.T. provokanten Thesen mit entwicklungspolitischen Fragen beschäftigt hat (vgl. P. Collier: "Die unterste Milliarde", ID-G 26/08; "Gefährliche Wahl", BA 12/09; "Der hungrige Planet", ID-G 48/11), untersucht hier, basierend auf einem theoretischen Modell, wie die Migrationsdynamik funktioniert. Indem er die sozialen, politischen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Folgen von Migration jeweils für die armen Heimatländer und die reichen Aufnahmeländer in Relation zur Anzahl, Qualifikation und Integrationsbereitschaft analysiert, versucht er Vor- und Nachteile für beide Seiten zu gewichten. In einer Art Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse bestimmt er dabei maßgebliche Faktoren, die einer neuen Einwanderungspolitik als Bemessungsdaten zur effektiven Steuerung zugrunde gelegt werden sollten.     Abstract: The Economics of Immigration is written as a both a reference for researchers and as a textbook on the economics of immigration. It is aimed at two audiences: (1) researchers who are interested in learning more about how economists approach the study of human migration flows; and (2) graduate students taking a course on migration or a labor economics course where immigration is one of the subfields studied. The book covers the economic theory of immigration, which explains why people move across borders and details the consequences of such movements for the source and destination economies.     Abstract: Migration has become business, big business. Over the last few decades a host of new business opportunities have emerged that capitalize both on the migrants' desires to migrate and the struggle by governments to manage migration. From the rapid growth of specialized transportation and labour immigration companies, to multinational companies managing detention centres or establishing border security, to the organized criminal networks profiting from human smuggling and trafficking, we are currently witnessing a growing commercialization of international migration.This volume claims that today it is almost impossible to speak of migration without also speaking of the migration industry. Yet, acknowledging the role the migration industry plays prompts a number of questions that have so far received only limited attention among scholars and policy makers. The book offers new concepts and theory for the study of international migration by bringing together cross-disciplinary theoretical explorations and original case studies. It also provides a global coverage of the phenomena under study, covering migrant destinations in Europe, the United States and Asia, and migrant sending regions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

    Abstract: This volume presents new research on post-accession migration from Central and Eastern Europe in the short period since the EU enlargements of 2004 and 2007. Explanations of post-accession migration patterns, trends and mechanisms delve into the complexities of these phenomena. New groups of migrants and types of migrations are identified - such as young migrants, often students or graduates, without family obligations and without clear plans concerning their future life. Case studies on Poland, Romania, Hungary and Latvia as well as the United Kingdom and Germany - being major destination countries - divulge the multifaceted nature of transition, whether in the form of labour migration, short-term mobility (including among international students) or return migration. The volume insightfully points towards future migration trends and sets guidelines for further research.

    Abstract: Obwohl internationale Migration vor allem ein Phänomen der Migration in Städte ist, liegen bisher kaum Untersuchungen zur Verknüpfung von Migration und Stadtentwicklung vor. Der vorliegende Sammelband untersucht zwei Schwerpunkte in diesem Schnittbereich: Das erste Thema widmet sich dem bisher wenig berücksichtigten Potenzial und der Rolle von Migration in städtischen Ökonomien. Der zweite Schwerpunkt richtet sich auf aktuelle Chancen und Herausforderungen für städtische Migrations-, Integrations- und Entwicklungspolitik. Beispiele aus Deutschland werden durch Aufsätze zu China und den USA ergänzt. Mit Beiträgen von: Patricia Ehrkamp, Stefanie Föbker, Norbert Gestring, Hans Dieter Laux, Zhigang Li, Josef Nipper, Carmella Pfaffenbach, Birte Rafflenbeul, Andrea Riester, Stefan Rother, Ann-Julia Schaland, Elena Sommer, Daniela Temme, Günter Thieme, Dita Vogel, Günther Weiss, Claus-Christian Wiegandt, Roman Windisch. „Es geht nicht mehr so sehr um die Frage, wie viel Heterogenität und kulturelle Vielfalt eine Stadt aushält. Vielmehr geht es um die Frage eines anderen Integrationsverständnisses, das Städte entwickeln müssen, wollen sie die Veränderungen des alltäglichen städtischen Lebens durch Migrantinnen und Migranten als Ressource und nicht als Defizit verstehen. Deshalb ist der Zusammenhang besonders wichtig, der zwischen einer sich entwickelnden Migrantenökonomie, -kultur, und -politik einerseits und einer Stadtentwicklungspolitik andererseits besteht. Wie verstehen sich Städte weiterhin unter der Bedingung internationaler Migration und kann, ja sogar muss eine Stadt alle vollständig integrieren? Und: brauchen Städte eine andere Logik von Integration und Ausgrenzung, die zum Bestandteil einer Stadtentwicklungspolitik wird? Die Beiträge gehen diesen Fragen in unterschiedlicher Intensität nach. Nicht immer ist der Zusammenhang zur Stadt als besonderer Lebensform und einer Struktur deutlich, aus der eine bestimmte Eigenlogik der Stadt erwächst und aus der eine auch eine spezifische Kerndynamik von Ökonomie, Kultur und der Gestaltung des Sozialen ableitbar ist. Einige der Beiträge bearbeitet das Thema aus der Sicht der Migrationsforschung und nur manchmal scheint der Zusammenhang zu den Besonderheiten des Urbanen oder der Urbanität als Lebensstil auf. Was aber deutlich geworden ist, ist sicher der Tatbestand, dass wir im Zeitalter internationaler Verflechtungen und Globalisierungstendenzen von internationalen Migrationsprozessen ausgehen müssen, die nicht mehr nur einseitig in eine Richtung der Migration verweisen“ (socialnet.de)

    Abstract: Although migration and integration have become important concepts today as a result of globalization, migration movements, integration, and multiculturalism have always been part of the history of Europe. Few people realize how many ethnic groups participated in migration within Europe or into Europe and this ignorance has grave consequences for the social and political status of immigrants. Newly available to an English-speaking audience, this encyclopaedia presents a systematic overview of the existing scholarship regarding migration within and into Europe. The first section contains survey studies of the various regions and countries in Europe covering the last centuries. The second section presents information on about 220 individual groups of migrants from the Sephardic Jews emigration from Spain and Portugal in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the present-day migration of old-age pensioners to the holiday villages in the sun.     Abstract: Die Arbeit erhielt den zweiten Platz beim Prix de la meilleure thèse de l’Université de Luxembourg 2012.Über 200.000 Menschen pendeln in der Großregion SaarLorLux über eine nationale Grenze an ihren Arbeitsplatz. Sie sind Gegenstand dieser Studie, die das Grenzgängerwesen erstmalig kulturwissenschaftlich untersucht. Im Zentrum stehen subjektzentrierte Raumkonstruktionen in transnationalen Bezügen, die über ein interdisziplinäres Modell erschlossen werden. Es basiert auf sozialgeographischen und kultursoziologischen Ansätzen und wird mit unterschiedlichen Erhebungstechniken umgesetzt. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse decken die Bedingungen und Merkmale von Räumen der Grenze im Vierländereck auf. Damit dokumentiert der Autor eine kaum erforschte Mobilitätsform und legt ein innovatives Werkzeug zur empirischen Rückbindung postmoderner Denkfiguren vor
