    Abstract: The Yakama Nation of present-day Washington State has responded to more than a century of historical trauma with a resurgence of grassroots activism and cultural revitalization. This path-breaking ethnography shifts the conversation from one of victimhood to one of ongoing resistance and resilience as a means of healing the soul wounds of settler colonialism. Yakama Rising: Indigenous Cultural Revitalization, Activism, and Healing argues that Indigenous communities themselves have the answers to the persistent social problems they face. This book contributes to understanding Indigenous social change by articulating the premise that grassroots activism and cultural revitalization are powerful examples of decolonization. Michelle Jacob employs ethnographic case studies to demonstrate the tension between reclaiming traditional cultural practices and adapting to change. Through interviewees' narratives, she carefully tacks back and forth between the atrocities of colonization and the remarkable actions of individuals committed to sustaining Yakama heritage.     Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

    Abstract: Der Umgang mit Tod und Trauer hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten gewandelt. Er ist individuell geworden und damit zugleich vielfältig; häufig verlagert sich der Ausdruck der Trauer in die Privatwelt, gleichwohl kommt es auch im Kontext von Bestattungen und Trauerfeiern immer wieder zu ausdrucksstarken Inszenierungen, manches Mal gar im Rahmen eines mediales Großereignisses. Trauernde suchen ganz eigene Wege, um den Schmerz des erfahrenen Verlustes zu bewältigen, Angehörige bringen im Vorfeld einer Bestattung individuelle Wünsche zur Gestaltung der Bestattungsfeier vor, Hinterbliebene finden innerhalb ihrer privaten Lebenswelt ganz unterschiedliche Gewohnheiten und Rituale, um die Erinnerung an einen verstorbenen Angehörigen zu bewahren. Mit diesem Wandel der Thanatokultur in einer nicht mehr selbstverständlich als christlich zu betrachtenden Gesellschaft haben sich auch die kirchliche Trauerbegleitung und die kirchliche Bestattungspraxis verändert. Die vielfältigen Linien dieser Entwicklungen innerhalb der kirchlichen Praxis im Kontext von Trauer und Tod im Einzelnen nachzuzeichnen und theologisch zu reflektieren, ist die Absicht des vorliegenden Bandes.

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

Der vorliegende Sammelband setzt grundlegende Aussagen der Säkularisierungstheorie der historischen Überprüfung aus. Soziologen und Historiker versuchen gemeinsam herauszufinden, inwieweit das für die letzten Jahrhunderte entworfene Bild einer zunehmenden Differenzierung von Religion und Politik der Revision bedarf.     Abstract: As the European public sphere becomes increasingly shaped by debates surrounding Islam, this book asks whether it is possible to rethink the public sphere, conceiving of it not as a site of consensus, but as one of antagonism and confrontation. With rich case studies drawn from various sites across Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe examines a range of public controversies, including mosque construction, ritual slaughter, Sharia councils, burqa bans and love and marriage, to address the question of how cases of 'Islamic difference' might be addressed outside the confines of established normative discourses, which focus on freedom of religion, minority rights or multiculturalism. Acknowledging the creative role of dissent, this book explores the manner in which public controversies shed new light on understandings of aesthetics, animal rights, freedom of speech, the uniformity of secular law and modes of individual emancipation.Developing an innovative conceptual framework and elaborating the notion of controversy as a methodological tool, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe draws our attention to the processes of interaction, confrontation and mutual transformation, thereby opening up a new horizon for rethinking difference and pluralism in Europe. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in religion, integration, cultural difference and the public sphere. Review: 'Nilufer Gole and her colleagues present an incisive intervention in the considerable and growing literature on Muslims in Europe. This volume goes beyond particular instances of the participation of Muslims in public space to exploring the roles and agency of Muslims in reshaping various national public spheres as well as the evolving, and contested, processes of Europeanization. In ihrem neuen Buch geht Butler der Frage nach, wie eine Kritik am Zionismus aus dem Judentum selbst heraus möglich, ja ethisch sogar zwingend ist. In einer eindringlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Lévinas, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi und den Palästinensern Edward Said und Mahmoud Darwish entwickelt sie eine neue jüdische Ethik, die sich gegen die von Israel ausgeübte und vom Zionismus legitimierte staatliche Gewalt sowie Israels koloniale Unterdrückung von Bevölkerungsgruppen wendet. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison. Aus der Erfahrung von Diaspora und Pluralität heraus plädiert Butler für einen Staat, in dem Israelis und Palästinenser, Juden und Nichtjuden gleichberechtigt zusammenleben.
