Since the 1990s, however, the local ceramic industry has been affected by a slump in sales.Which local actors develop strategies to overcome the crisis and what role does local identity play? Against the backdrop of the Japanese decentralization and regional development policy, Cornelia Heron discusses the question of prospects for locally networked craftsmen in global capitalism. She shows how Arita's economic and cultural marginalization and their social consequences stand for the development of a new periphery at the margins of the OECD world

Seit den 1990er Jahren jedoch ist die lokale Keramikbranche von einer Absatzkrise betroffen.Welche Strategien entwickeln lokale Akteure, um die Krise zu überwinden, und welche Rolle spielt dabei lokale Identität? Vor dem Hintergrund der japanischen Dezentralisierungs- und Regionalentwicklungspolitik diskutiert Cornelia Reiher die Frage nach den Perspektiven lokaler Handwerkscluster im globalen Kapitalismus.     Abstract: Since the late 1990s, scientists and environmental activists have held the hunting lifestyle of the Inuit responsible for the decline of certain Greenlandic animal populations. However, indigenous peoples (still) receive special status in the ecological discourse, in that the practice of resource-efficient dealings with natural (animal- and plant-based) goods is attributed to them.Nature in need of protection clashes with Greenlandic collective identity as the Greenlandic expression for local food - Kalaalimernit - becomes a contested terrain.     Abstract: The psychological testing work of the German-American anthropologist Franz Boas and his school are fundamentally examined for the first time in this book. Alexa Geisthövel portrays the Boazian research strategies and contrasts them to the those of U.S. psychologists in the 1920s who aimed to objectively prove racial differences in intelligence. In addition, she gets to the bottom of relationships between the Jewish anti-racists led by Boas and the German intelligence psychologists and racial researchers in order to make visible the different styles of scientific racism in the U.S. and Germany as well as links between racism and anti-racism in the period between the world wars

Zu derartigen Exzessen kommt es auch in westlichen Ländern, jedoch weniger häufig als gedacht. Von 55 Opfern in acht Jahren spricht das BKA. Aber ist jeder dieser Morde ein Ehrenmord? Anna Caroline Cöster nähert sich den Hintergründen, um dem Phänomen schärfere Konturen zu verleihen. Auch die Bedrängnis möglicher Opfer bringt sie zur Sprache. Oft leben betrof-fene Frauen seit Jahren auf der Flucht; mit dem Verlassen ihrer Familien sehen sie sich schlagartig in Lebensgefahr und müssen sich zudem ein ihnen kulturell völlig fremdes Leben aufbauen. Ihre teils stark mit Gewalt durchsetzten trauma-tischen Erlebnisse können sie dabei fast niemandem anvertrauen. Das soziale wie religiöse Umfeld beeinflusst betroffene Familien hingegen sehr. Zu einem Ehrenmord kommt es mithin nicht aus heiterem Himmel. Der Kreis möglicher Mitwisser ist weit größer als bislang gedacht.

    Abstract: Global-City-Forschung betrachtet meist wenige Metropolen im Norden. Die großen Städte im globalen Süden hingegen tauchen dort kaum auf. Jedoch: Unter Bedingungen neoliberaler Urbanisierung stellen Diskurse der Global City für Planer, lokalen Staat sowie Ober- und Mittelschichten dieser Städte oft einen wichtigen Bezugspunkt und ein Versprechen von Aufstieg und Modernität dar.Am Beispiel der philippinischen Hauptstadt Manila untersucht Boris Michel Räume der Ober- und Mittelschichten in einer Stadt, die gemeinhin als unkontrollierbare Megacity der Dritten Welt gilt. Dabei geht es um Gated Communities und städtische Großprojekte, um privatisierte Konsumräume und Gentrifizierung, um Exklusivität und Exklusion sowie um den historischen Wandel städtischen Regierens
