    Abstract: Long description: Um 1900 wurde die Bildpostkarte zum Massenmedium. Ihre Beliebtheit verdankte sie insbesondere ihrem Charakter als Gegenstand des alltäglichen Gebrauchs; die meist bunten Bilder wurden beschriftet, verschickt, gesammelt und getauscht. Auch koloniale Motive zirkulierten in bis dahin ungekannten Ausmaßen und trugen wesentlich zur Etablierung und Popularisierung kolonialen Wissens sowie zur kolonialen Formierung des Alltags bei. Felix Axsters anschauliche Untersuchung beleuchtet das Verhältnis zwischen Bildpostkarten der Kolonialzeit und ihrer spezifischen Nutzung und fragt nach den Konsequenzen, die heute zu ziehen sind: Wie ist gegenwärtig mit dem historischen Bildmaterial umzugehen, das in einer Geschichte von Gewalt und Zwang wirkmächtig wurde?

    Abstract: "Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian is the most ambitious photographic and ethnographic record of Native American cultures ever produced. Published between 1907 and 1930 as a series of twenty volumes and portfolios, the work contains more than two thousand photographs intended to document the traditional culture of every Native American tribe west of the Mississippi. Many critics have claimed that Curtis's images present Native peoples as a "vanishing race," hiding both their engagement with modernity and the history of colonial violence. But in this major reappraisal of Curtis's work, Shamoon Zamir argues instead that Curtis's photography engages meaningfully with the crisis of culture and selfhood brought on by the dramatic transformations of Native societies. This crisis is captured profoundly, and with remarkable empathy, in Curtis's images of the human face. Zamir also contends that we can fully understand this achievement only if we think of Curtis's Native subjects as coauthors of his project. This radical reassessment is presented as a series of close readings that explore the relationship of aesthetics and ethics in photography. Zamir's richly illustrated study resituates Curtis's work in Native American studies and in the histories of photography and visual anthropology. "--

Patricia Stella Edema fördert dabei zentrale Mechanismen der Konstruktion nationaler und schwarzer Selbst- und Fremdheit zu Tage, die in der bewegten Zeit zwischen Reconstruction und Harlem Renaissance eine grundlegende - und für das gesamte 20. Jahrhundert prägende - Neuausrichtung erfuhren.     Abstract: Am 11. März 2011 ereignete sich vor der japanischen Küste ein schweres Erdbeben. Es löste einen gewaltigen Tsunami aus, der an der Ostküste Japans schwere Schäden hervorrief und fast 20.000 Menschen das Leben kostete. Im Atomkraftwerk Fukushima verursachte der Tsunami eine Reaktorkatastrophe, in deren Folge insbesondere in Deutschland eine heftige Diskussion über die Atomenergie entflammte, die schließlich zum deutschen Atomausstieg führte. Die Reaktorkatastrophe erfuhr international eine große öffentliche (Medien-) Aufmerksamkeit und rief auch die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschung auf den Plan. Ergebnisse dieser Forschungen, die an verschiedenen Stellen unabhängig voneinander durchgeführt wurden, sind in diesem Band versammelt. - In insgesamt 13 Beiträgen werden die medialen und öffentlichen Reaktionen auf das Unglück empirisch analysiert. Die Beiträge befassen sich zum einen mit der Darstellung der Atomenergie in historischer Vergleichsperspektive, wobei die Reaktorkatastrophe in Tschernobyl als Referenzpunkt für Fukushima diente. In weiteren Beiträgen wird die Dynamik der Berichterstattung in Deutschland fokussiert. Fünf Beiträge betrachten die Reaktionen der Medien in internationaler Vergleichsperspektive und weitere vier untersuchen die Reaktionen der Bevölkerung auf die Ereignisse in Fukushima. Durch die Zusammenführung der unterschiedlichen Perspektiven wird eine differenzierte Einschätzung der medialen und gesellschaftlichen Konsequenzen des Extremereignisses möglich. Die Umrisse eines Forschungsprogramms für die Nachhaltigkeits-, Energie- und Umweltkommunikation werden sichtbar.

    Abstract: "Envisioning Socialism examines television and the power it exercised to define the East Germans' view of socialism during the first decades of the German Democratic Republic. In the first book in English to examine this topic, Heather L. Gumbert traces how television became a medium prized for its communicative and entertainment value. She explores the difficulties GDR authorities had defining and executing a clear vision of the society they hoped to establish, and she explains how television helped to stabilize GDR society in a way that ultimately worked against the utopian vision the authorities thought they were cultivating. Gumbert challenges those who would dismiss East German television as a tool of repression that couldn't compete with the West or capture the imagination of East Germans. Instead, she shows how, by the early 1960s, television was a model of the kind of socialist realist art that could appeal to authorities and audiences. Ultimately, this socialist vision was overcome by the challenges that the international market in media products and technologies posed to nation-building in the postwar period. A history of ideas and perceptions examining both real and mediated historical conditions, Envisioning Socialism considers television as a technology, an institution, and a medium of social relations and cultural knowledge.     Abstract: Documents the untold story of the American directors, screenwriters, and actors who emigrated to Europe as a result of the Hollywood blacklist. During the 1950s and early 1960s, these Hollywood exiles directed, wrote, or starred in almost 100 European productions, their contributions ranging from crime film masterpieces like Du rififi chez les hommes (dir. Jules Dassin, 1955) to international blockbusters such as The Bridge on the River Kwai (scr. Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, 1957) to acclaimed art films like The Servant (dir. Joseph Losey, 1963). At once a lively portrait of a lesser-known American "lost generation" and an examination of an important transitional moment in European cinema,the book presents a compelling argument for the significance of the blacklisted exiles to our understanding of postwar American and European cinema and Cold War cultural relations. The experiences of the blacklisted in Europe not only suggest the need to rethink our understanding of the Hollywood blacklist as a purely domestic phenomenon, but, by shedding new light on European cinema's changing relationship with Hollywood, illuminates the postwar shift from national to "transnational" cinema

    Abstract: Eindrucksvolle Naturlandschaften und exotische Kulturen lockten Künstler aus dem Rhein-Main-Gebiet in zahlreiche europäische Länder, in den Orient und sogar bis nach Amerika. Ausstellung und begleitender Katalog thematisieren die Faszination dieser Künstler für fremde Bildwelten vom späten 18. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert. Ihre künstlerischen Interessen an den fremden Orten waren sehr vielfältig: Sie suchten nach exotischen Bildmotiven, dokumentierten wissenschaftliche Expeditionen oder experimentierten mit fremden Lichtverhältnissen. Die gesammelten Reiseeindrücke hielten die Künstler in Bleistiftskizzen, Aquarellen, Ölstudien und Fotografien fest. Diese dienten nach der Rückkehr zumeist als Bildvorlagen für aufwändigere Ölgemälde. Angesichts einer steigenden Nachfrage spezialisierten sich einige Künstler auf bestimmte Bildsujets und trugen so teilweise zur Verbreitung stereotyper Vorstellungen von der Fremde bei.     Abstract: "After the turmoil of the Great Depression and World War II, Americans looked to the nation's more distant past for lessons to inform its uncertain future. By applying recent and emerging techniques in mass communication--including radio and television programs and commercial book clubs--American elites working in media, commerce, and government used history to confer authority on their respective messages. With insight and wit, Erik Christiansen uncovers in Channeling the Past the ways that powerful corporations rewrote history to strengthen the postwar corporate state, while progressives, communists, and other leftists vied to make their own versions of the past more popular. Christiansen looks closely at several notable initiatives--CBS's flashback You Are There program; the Smithsonian Museum of American History, constructed in the late 1950s; the Cavalcade of America program sponsored by the Du Pont Company; the History Book Club; and the Freedom Train, a museum on rails that traveled the country from 1947 to 1949 exhibiting historic documents and flags, including original copies of the U.S. Constitution and the Magna Carta. It is often said that history is written by the victors, but Christiansen offers a more nuanced perspective: history is constantly remade to suit the objectives of those with the resources to do it. He provides dramatic evidence of sophisticated calculations that influenced both public opinion and historical memory, and shows that Americans' relationships with the past changed as a result"--Publisher's description

    Abstract: Photography and social movements is the first thorough study of photography's interrelationship with social movements. Focusing on the photographic production and dissemination during the student and worker uprising in Paris in May 1968, the Zapatista rebellion, and the anti-capitalist protests in Genoa in 2001, the book argues that at times of political uprisings, photographic documentations, often contradictory, strive to prevail in the public domain, extending the political or economic struggle to a representational level. Photography plays a central role in this representational conflict, by either reproducing or challenging stereotypical narratives of protest. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary analysis of a wide range of practices, amateur and professional, and of previously unpublished archival material will add considerably to students', researchers' and scholars' knowledge of both the visual imagery of political movements and the developing history of photographic representation

    Abstract: Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book---not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page---over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths
