Abstract: BioCoder is a quarterly newsletter for DIYbio, synthetic bio, and anything related. You’ll discover: Articles about interesting projects and experiments, such as the glowing plant Articles about tools, both those you buy and those you build Visits to DIYbio laboratories Profiles of key people in the community Announcements of events and other items of interest Safety pointers and tips about good laboratory practice Anything that’s interesting or useful: you tell us! And BioCoder is free (for the time being), unless you want a dead-tree version. We’d like BioCoder to become self supporting (maybe even profitable), but we’ll worry about that after we’ve got a few issues under our belt. Abstract: Magazines aren’t really built to last, and in the rush to digital delivery, some folks might argue that they're all but obsolete anyway. But for makers who work with their hands and bibliophiles who still appreciate the physical artifact of the written word, there will always be something special about print. If you're one of these stubborn luddites, you might just want your library of magazines to last. You might even want your digital content to take on new life as an aesthetic object that survives as a dead-tree edition. When you’ve completed this 32-page project (when printed, it's an even two 16-page signatures), you’ll have a durable, attractive hardcover copy of this booklet (or your favorite magazine, in the event that the two are not one and the same) that will last forever and lie flat, allowing future generations to carry on the craft and tradition of preserving bona-fide pieces of printed matter.

Abstract: Embedded software is in almost every electronic device designed today. There is software hidden away inside our watches, microwaves, VCRs, cellular telephones, and pagers; the military uses embedded software to guide smart missiles and detect enemy aircraft; communications satellites, space probes, and modern medicine would be nearly impossible without it. Of course, someone has to write all that software, and there are thousands of computer scientists, electrical engineers, and other professionals who actually do. Each embedded system is unique and highly customized to the application at hand. As a result, embedded systems programming is a widely varying field that can take years to master. However, if you have some programming experience and are familiar with C or C++, you're ready to learn how to write embedded software. The hands-on, no-nonsense style of this book will help you get started by offering practical advice from someone who's been in your shoes and wants to help you learn quickly. The techniques and code examples presented here are directly applicable to real-world embedded software projects of all sorts. Even if you've done some embedded programming before, you'll still benefit from the topics in this book, which include: Testing memory chips quickly and efficiently Writing and erasing Flash memory Verifying nonvolatile memory contents with CRCs Interfacing to on-chip and external peripherals Device driver design and implementation Optimizing embedded software for size and speed So whether you're writing your first embedded program, designing the latest generation of hand-held whatchamacalits, or simply managing the people who do, this book is for you.

Abstract: JavaScript is a powerful, object-based scripting language that can be embedded directly in HTML pages. It allows you to create dynamic, interactive Web-based applications that run completely within a Web browser -- JavaScript is the language of choice for developing Dynamic HTML (DHTML) content. JavaScript can be integrated effectively with CGI and Java to produce sophisticated Web applications, although, in many cases, JavaScript eliminates the need for complex CGI scripts and Java applets altogether. The JavaScript Pocket Reference is a companion volume to JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. This small book, covering JavaScript 1.2, is a handy reference guide to this popular language for Web development. It provides a complete overview of the core JavaScript language and contains summaries of both core and client-side objects, methods, and properties.

Abstract: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is the glue that holds together MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows NT. It is a client-server technology -- a way of making programs on two different systems work together like one. The advantage of RPC over other distributing programming techniques is that you can link two systems together using simple C calls, as in a single-system program. The most common use for client-server is to combine the graphical display capabilities of a desk-top PC with the database and number-crunching power of a large central system. But peer-to-peer programs can run equally well. Like many aspects of Microsoft programming, RPC forms a small world of its own, with conventions and terms that can be confusing. But once you understand the purpose behind each feature, programming with RPC is not difficult. This book lays out the concepts and the programming tasks so that you can use this powerful API. Microsoft RPC is a new technology based on the RPC used in the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE). This book builds on O'Reilly's successful DCE series. It provides a solid foundation for programmers learning to use Microsoft RPC, including: Controlling communications through the Microsoft Interface Definition Languages (MIDL) and the Attribute Configuration File (ACF)The book contains: How the server advertises itself How a client chooses a server (binding) Types of pointers and arrays Memory management Administration tasks for an RPC server This edition covers version 2.0 of Microsoft RPC. Four complete examples are included.
