In Classical Music in Weimar Germany, Brendan Fay challenges this paradigm by reassessing the relationship between conservative musical culture and German politics. Drawing upon a range of archival sources, concert reviews and satirical cartoons, Fay maps the complex path of classical music culture from Weimar to Nazi Germany-a trajectory that was more crooked, uneven, or broken than straight. Through an examination of topics as varied as radio and race to nationalism, this book demonstrates the diversity of competing aesthetic, philosophical and political ideals held by German music critics that were a hallmark of Weimar Germany.     Abstract: Music has long been an avenue for protest, seen as a way to promote freedom and equality, instill hope, and fight for change. Popular music, in particular, is considered to be an effective form of subversion and resistance under oppressive circumstances. But as Nomi Dave shows us in The Revolution's Echoes, the opposite is also true-music can often support, rather than challenge, the powers that be. Examining fifty years of history in Guinea, Dave introduces readers to the music supporting the authoritarian regime of former president Sékou Touré, and to the musicians who, even long after his death, have continued to praise dictators and avoid dissent. Dave shows that this isn't just the result of state manipulation-even in the absence of coercion, musicians and their audiences take real pleasure in musical praise of leaders. Time and again, whether in traditional music or in newer genres such as rap, Guinean musicians have celebrated state power and authority. With The Revolution's Echoes, Dave insists that we must grapple with the uncomfortable truth that some forms of music choose to support authoritarianism, generating new pleasures and new politics in the process

    Abstract: Vor welche Probleme wird die Kommunalpolitik in Bezug auf Stadtentwicklung und Klima gestellt und warum können diesbezügliche bundespolitische Programme nicht so einfach umgesetzt werden? Aus einer politisch-geographischen Perspektive zeigt Cindy Sturm am Beispiel von Dresden und Münster, dass diese Programme auf unterschiedliche Rationalitäten und Problematisierungen treffen und in vielfältigen, auch unerwarteten oder widerständigen Praktiken der Stadtentwicklungspolitik angeeignet und modifiziert werden. Basierend auf diskurs- und gouvernementalitätstheoretischen Ansätzen trägt die Studie somit dazu bei, die Komplexität kommunaler Politik allgemein bzw. von Klimapolitik im Besonderen zu verdeutlichen

    Abstract: This book explores the highly-valued, and often highly-charged, ideal of authenticity in hip-hop — what it is, why it is important, and how it affects the day-to-day life of rap artists. By analyzing the practices, identities, and struggles that shape the lives of rappers in the London scene, the study exposes the strategies and tactics that hip-hop practitioners engage in to negotiate authenticity on an everyday basis. In-depth interviews and fieldwork provide insight into the nature of authenticity in global hip-hop, and the dynamics of cultural appropriation, globalization, marketization, and digitization through a combined set of ethnographic, theoretical, and cultural analysis. Despite growing attention to authenticity in popular music, this book is the first to offer a comprehensive theoretical model explaining the reflexive approaches hip-hop artists adopt to ‘live out’ authenticity in everyday life. This model will act as a blueprint for new studies in global hip-hop and be generative in other authenticity research, and for other music genres such as punk, rock and roll, country, and blues that share similar issues surrounding contested artist authenticity

    Abstract: De ce fait, les actuelles bandes de violons européennes, témoignant de l?histoire migratoire tsigane, des échanges entre Tsiganes et Gadjé et entre Européens eux-mêmes, constituent une mémoire interculturelle de l?Europe.00Si l?itinérance, l?oralité, la périphérie sociale et culturelle, la dilution du ?Bohémien? dans le ?vagabond? complexifient le traitement d?une telle recherche en raison de la raréfaction des sources directes, l?un des objectifs de cet ouvrage est de révéler le dynamisme et le mouvement des sociétés européennes anciennes, l?extrême complexité de leur fonctionnement musical, l?enchevêtrement de leurs réalités sociales, économiques, politiques, culturelles.

Cabarets, gender impressionism clubs, and sites of sex tourism in Kansas City served as world-making spaces for those whose performance of identity transgressed hegemonic notions of gender, sexuality, race, and class. Es entsteht ein Panorama von gesellschaftlichen und politischen Inklusions- und Exklusionsprozessen, die sich durch Muster einer propagierten ›deutschen‹ Musik- und ›Machtkultur‹ ereigneten, wandelten und neu definierten.

Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.
