Iran's particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E. Lucas argues that this music is a modern phenomenon indelibly tied to changing notions of Iran's national history. Rather than considering a single Persian music history, Lucas demonstrates cultural dissimilarity and discontinuity over time, bringing to light two different notions of music-making in relation to premodern and modern musical norms. An important corrective to the history of Persian music, Music of a Thousand Years is the first work to align understandings of Middle Eastern music history with current understandings of the region's political history.

While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

    Abstract: When rock and roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the music's demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was "ever working in the world for evil." Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry. The Devil's Music tells the story of this transformation. Rock's origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock 'n' roll's popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this "blasphemous jungle music," with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed. Stephens argues that in the early days of rock 'n' roll, faith served as a vehicle for whites' racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesus's message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephens's compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.--

The pervasive nature of stardom in modern society demands study from the perspectives of a range of distinct but thematically connected disciplines. The exploration of intersections between broader considerations of stardom and the discourses of popular music studies is the genesis for this volume. The chapters collected here demonstrate the variety of work currently being undertaken in stardom studies by scholars in Australia. The contributions range from biographical considerations of the stars of popular music, contributions to critical discourses of stardom in the industry more broadly, and the various ways in which the use of astronomical metaphors, in both cultural commentary and academic discourse, demonstrate notions of stardom firmly embedded in popular music thought. Not only do these chapters represent a range of perspectives on popular music, stars and stardom, they provide eloquent and innovative contributions to the developing discourse on stardom in popular music."

    Abstract: Histoire et anthropologie des ensembles populaires de violons en Europe.00Les fortes ressemblances entre anciens ensembles ménétriers de violons et actuelles bandes de violons ? tsiganes ? d?Europe centrale, autorisent l?hypothèse des transferts culturels.00Les Tsiganes étant présents en Europe depuis le xve siècle, les processus de mise en contact entre eux et les populations locales (Gadjé) sont multiples : circulations humaines de toutes sortes, cadre répressif et carcéral associé au vagabondage, fréquentation, par les Tsiganes, des nobles, des cours, de l?espace économique et performatif de la foire, des milieux du théâtre itinérant. Par ailleurs, au xviie siècle, les bandes de violons ? surtout françaises ? ont essaimé dans toute l?Europe, notamment centrale.
    Abstract: De ce fait, les actuelles bandes de violons européennes, témoignant de l?histoire migratoire tsigane, des échanges entre Tsiganes et Gadjé et entre Européens eux-mêmes, constituent une mémoire interculturelle de l?Europe.00Si l?itinérance, l?oralité, la périphérie sociale et culturelle, la dilution du ?Bohémien? dans le ?vagabond? complexifient le traitement d?une telle recherche en raison de la raréfaction des sources directes, l?un des objectifs de cet ouvrage est de révéler le dynamisme et le mouvement des sociétés européennes anciennes, l?extrême complexité de leur fonctionnement musical, l?enchevêtrement de leurs réalités sociales, économiques, politiques, culturelles.
    Abstract: Cette histoire des bandes de violons en Europe doit, certes, être appréhendée dans le cadre des cours, mais aussi d?une culture ménétrière urbaine, rurale, parfois foraine et marginale, itinérante et nomade.0L?autre ambition de cet ouvrage est de proposer une nouvelle approche de la technique et du jeu violonistiques des anciens ménétriers violonistes, à partir de l?étude des consorts populaires actuels de violons de certaines régions d?Europe occidentale (Italie), centrale et balkanique.0

He contends that biblical traditions and hip-hop emerged out of experiences of dispossession and oppression. Whether born in the ghettos of America or of the Roman Empire, hip-hop and Christianity have endured by giving voice to the persecuted. This book offers a view of soul in living color, as a breathing, suffering, dreaming thing.

    Abstract: "In the context of a shifting domestic and international status quo that was evolving in the decades following World War II, French audiences used jazz as a means of negotiating a wide range of issues that were pressing to them and to their fellow citizens. Despite the fact that jazz was fundamentally linked to the multicultural through its origins in the hands of African-American musicians, happenings within the French jazz public reflected much about France&#x;s postwar society. In the minds of many, jazz was connected to youth culture, but instead of challenging traditional gender expectations, the music tended to reinforce long-held stereotypes. French critics, musicians, and fans contended with the reality of American superpower strength and often strove to elevate their own country's stature in relation to the United States by finding fault with American consumer society and foreign policy aims. Jazz audiences used this music to condemn American racism and to support the American civil rights movement, expressing strong reservations about the American way of life. French musicians lobbied to create professional opportunities for themselves, and some went so far as to create a union that endorsed preferential treatment for French nationals. As France became more ethnically and religiously diverse due immigration from Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, French jazz critics and fans noted the insidious appearance of racism in their own country and had to contend with how their own citizens would address the changing demographics of the nation, even if they continued to insist that racism was more prevalent in the United States. As independence movements brought an end to the French empire, jazz enthusiasts from both former colonies and France had to reenvision their relationship to jazz and to the music&#x;s international audiences. In these postwar decades, the French were working to preserve a distinct national identity in the face of weakened global authority, most forcefully represented by decolonization and American hegemony. Through this originally African American music, French listeners, commentators, and musicians participated in a process that both challenged and reinforced ideas about their own culture and nation"--Back cover

Virtuosen wie der Teufelsgeiger Niccolò Paganini oder der akrobatische Pianist Franz Liszt haben sich im neunzehnten Jahrhundert ungemein erfolgreich selbst als Popstars avant la lettre inszeniert.

    Abstract: "At the close of the Second World War, waves of African American musicians migrated to Paris, eager to thrive in its reinvigorated jazz scene. Jazz Diasporas challenges the notion that Paris was a color-blind paradise for African Americans. On the contrary, musicians...and African American artists based in Europe like writer and social critic James Baldwin...adopted a variety of strategies to cope with the cultural and social assumptions that greeted them throughout their careers in Paris, particularly in light of the cultural struggles over race and identity that gripped France as colonial conflicts like the Algerian War escalated. Through case studies of prominent musicians and thoughtful analysis of personal interviews, music, film, and literature, Rashida K. Braggs investigates the impact of this post-war musical migration. Examining a number of players in the jazz scene, including Sidney Bechet, Inez Cavanaugh, and Kenny Clarke, Braggs identifies how they performed both as musicians and as African Americans. The collaborations that they and other African Americans created with French musicians and critics complicated racial and cultural understandings of who could play and represent "authentic" jazz. Their role in French society challenged their American identity and illusions of France as a racial safe haven. In this post-war era of collapsing nations and empires, African American jazz players and their French counterparts destabilized set notions of identity. Sliding in and out of black and white and American and French identities, they created collaborative spaces for mobile and mobilized musical identities, what Braggs terms 'jazz diasporas.'"...Provided by publisher

    Abstract: In this book, Stephen Graham examines the largely unexplored terrain of underground music-exploratory forms of music-making, such as noise, free improvisation, and extreme metal, that exist outside or on the fringes of mainstream culture, generally independent from both the market and from traditional high-art institutions. Until now there has been little scholarly discussion of underground music and its cultural, political, and aesthetic importance.     Abstract: "Player pianos, radio-electric circuits, gramophone records, and optical sound film-these were the cutting-edge acoustic technologies of the early twentieth century, and for many musicians and artists of the time, these devices were also the implements of a musical revolution. Instruments for New Music traces a diffuse network of cultural agents who shared the belief that a truly modern music could be attained only through a radical challenge to the technological foundations of the art. Centered in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, the movement to create new instruments encompassed a broad spectrum of experiments, from the exploration of microtonal tunings and exotic tone colors to the ability to compose directly for automatic musical machines. This movement comprised composers, inventors, and visual artists, including Paul Hindemith, Ernst Toch, Jörg Mager, Friedrich Trautwein, László Moholy-Nagy, Walter Ruttmann, and Oskar Fischinger.     Abstract: »One must be absolutely modern!« - this premise hung like a guiding star above numerous avant-garde movements of the 1910s and '20s. From the salon to the street, from esoteric milieux into life, preferably the night-life: as border-crossers between cultural lifeworlds, in a casual suit and with a tightly clamped monocle, the new artist type headed out to proletarian boxing fights or to popular variety shows. He played in a jazz band, collected records, danced the foxtrot and the Charleston, and raised as such not just the claim of the artistic principle, but he also knew how to cleverly use proven PR strategies from the entertainment industry for his own purposes. Anke J. Hübel goes looking for traces of this amongst the protagonists of the avant-garde movements of the time, and in doing so, focuses in particular on the multilayered relationship which the artists had with the extremely popular jazz music of the time. This interdisciplinary essay is equal parts a work of media history, and of modern history more broadly. Anke J.     Abstract: Zitate in Musik, Bild und Architektur sind theoretisch bisher kaum untersucht. Auf der Basis zeichen- und medientheoretischer sowie kulturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse entwickelt Anna Valentine Ullrich ein Modell, um verschiedene Zitaterscheinungen zu analysieren, und berücksichtigt dabei sowohl den Prozess des Zitierens als auch das Zitatprodukt und seine Wirkungen.Anwendung findet das Modell auf Beispiele der gebauten Architektur. Die medienübergreifende Betrachtung erweitert die Zitatforschung um neue Perspektiven und diskutiert zudem Funktionen des Zitierens als Kulturtechnik
