    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop. This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Iran's particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E.     Abstract: 〈p〉Anonymity practices in electronic music culture have long been the object of journalistic and academic discourse. Yet anonymity itself is ephemeral and ontologically precarious. How can scholars research anonymous entities without impairing their anonymity, and what can they learn from their precarity?〈br /〉This study describes two projects of anonymity performance as forms of critical practice (Judith Butler/Michel Foucault) involving performative play with anonymity through the use of fake identities or collaborative persona imaginations. Adopting a reflexive and performative writing style, this performance ethnography calls for a radical performative turn and an ontological reflexivity in the cultural studies of music.〈/p〉

Music is here approached as a practice not confined by audibility - rather, it is "seen" when the YouTube video is clicked, "felt" when the subwoofer vibrates, and "smelled" when the festival crowd dances: practices make music emerge in concrete situations constituted by people, objects, techniques, meanings, and emotions. Through these practices, values are created and shared which connect a way of music-making with objects and places of experiencing music unconfined by borders of any kind

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

    Abstract: Colombia has the largest black population in the Spanish-speaking world, but Afro-Colombians have long remained at the nation’s margins. Their recent irruption into the political, social, and cultural spheres is tied to appeals to cultural difference, dramatized by the traditional music of Colombia’s majority-black Southern Pacific region, often called currulao. Yet that music remains largely unknown and unstudied despite its complexity, aesthetic appeal, and social importance. Rites, Rights & Rhythms: A Genealogy of Musical Meaning in Colombia’s Black Pacific is the first book-length academic study of currulao, inquiring into the numerous ways that it has been used: to praise the saints, to grapple with modernization, to dramatize black politics, to demonstrate national heritage, to generate economic development, and to provide social amelioration in a context of war. The author draws on both archival and ethnographic research to trace these and other opinions about how currulao has been understood, illuminating a history of struggles over its meanings that are also struggles over the meanings of blackness in Colombia. Moving from the eighteenth century to the present, this book asks how musical meaning is made, maintained, and sometimes abandoned across historical contexts as varied as colonial slavery, twentieth-century national populism, and neoliberal multiculturalism. What emerges is both a rich portrait of one of the hemisphere’s most important and understudied black cultures and a theory of history traced through the performative practice of currulao.

    Abstract: In the 20th and 21st century, the tradition of singer-poets gained popularity in Eastern Turkey and its neighboring countries. Many of these artists were bi- or multilingual and thus representative of the ethnically diverse region of Eastern Anatolia. The connection to oral traditions of the region is evident in the singer-poets’ songs, music and text. This anthology illustrates the variety of singer-poet traditions from an interdisciplinary perspective by discussing, among other topics, the artists’ employment as national symbol, the role of gender, and the different styles that are grown out of this kind of music

    Abstract: Beyond interpretation: a proposal for experimental performance practices.0'Logic of Experimentation' offers several innovative and ground-breaking perspectives on music performance, music ontology, research methodologies and ethics of performance. It proposes new modes of thinking and exposing past musical works to contemporary audiences, arguing for a new kind of performer, emancipated from authoritative texts and traditions, whose creativity is propelled by intensive research and inventive imagination. Moving beyond the work-concept, Logic of Experimentation presents a new image of musical works, based upon the notions of strata, assemblage and diagram, advancing innovative practice-based methodologies that integrate archival and musicological research into the creative process leading to a performance. Beyond representational modes of performance - be it mainstream or historically informed performance practices - 'Logic of Experimentation' creates an ontological, methodological and ethical space for experimental performance practices, arguing for a new mode of performance. Written in an experimental style, its eight chapters appropriate music performance concepts from post-structural philosophy, psychoanalysis, science and technology studies, epistemology and semiotics, displaying how transdisciplinarity is central to artistic research

    Abstract: Philosophers and rappers jointly explore in discussions, texts, songs, comments and spontaneous associations what philosophy of hip-hop means, the focus being on living philosophyzing. Philosophyzing in the sense of hip-hop requires getting personally involved. What is dreaded is not amateurism but copying the thoughts of others. In the confrontation with the thoughts of others, your own thoughts flash through your head. Authenticity, respectively realness and creativity: These are the ethical values of hip-hop.     Abstract: Performing Zimbabwe presents a transdisciplinary analysis of Zimbabwean music, drawing from different disciplines such as sociology, ethnomusicology, history, journalism, development studies, English, philology and drama. It offers a re-evaluation of Zimbabwean music by Zimbabwean scholars and, in so doing, reconsiders the work of international academics on the subject. Thus, the book highlights the significance of local scholars in the study of Zimbabwean music.     Abstract: Zur sozialen Ungleichheit des Musikhörens -- Neue Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 -- Aktuelle empirische Befunde zum Musikhören in Österreich -- Wozu Musik? Zentrale Tendenzen und mögliche Konsequenzen.
    Abstract: In Anschluss an aktuelle Erkenntnisse soziologischer und sozialpsychologischer Musikrezeptionsforschung erläutert der Band, welche gesellschaftlichen Funktionen das Musikhören heute erfüllt, und welche Rolle hier die neuen Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 spielen. Auf Basis repräsentativer empirischer Erhebungen werden musikalische Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen illustriert sowie klar abgrenzbare Musikhörtypen charakterisiert, die in je besonderer Weise mit den aktuellen Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen der digitalen Mediamorphose umgehen. Besondere Berücksichtigung findet dabei die Frage nach der Bedeutung primärer Sozialisation als Gegengewicht zur musikalischen Selbstsozialisation im Internet. Vor allem Alter, Schulbildung und Wohnortsgröße der Menschen zeigen sich als entscheidende Einflussgrößen der individuellen musikalischen Praxis in Österreich. The pervasive nature of stardom in modern society demands study from the perspectives of a range of distinct but thematically connected disciplines. The exploration of intersections between broader considerations of stardom and the discourses of popular music studies is the genesis for this volume. The chapters collected here demonstrate the variety of work currently being undertaken in stardom studies by scholars in Australia. The contributions range from biographical considerations of the stars of popular music, contributions to critical discourses of stardom in the industry more broadly, and the various ways in which the use of astronomical metaphors, in both cultural commentary and academic discourse, demonstrate notions of stardom firmly embedded in popular music thought. Not only do these chapters represent a range of perspectives on popular music, stars and stardom, they provide eloquent and innovative contributions to the developing discourse on stardom in popular music."

    Abstract: In der aktuellen Berichterstattung werden vor allem die Unterschiede zwischen dem christlichen Westen und dem islamischen Osten betont. Bei einem näheren Blick auf die Geschichte der beiden Kulturräume lässt sich jedoch eine ähnliche Entwicklung ausmachen: Als Renaissance wird sowohl eine Phase im Heiligen Römischen Reich unter den Habsburgern als auch im Herrschaftsgebiet der Timuriden bezeichnet.Diese vermeintliche Ähnlichkeit bildet den Ausgangspunkt für eine Untersuchung der beiden Kulturräume in der Zeit um 900/1500. Damals lenkten die Herrscher Maximilian I. und Babur die Geschicke der beiden Dynastien. Ihre Selbstzeugnisse bilden die Grundlage für eine vergleichende Analyse. Die Fragen, die im Rahmen der Arbeit behandelt werden, lauten: Welche signifikanten Ähnlichkeiten zwischen diesen Texten lassen sich ausmachen und woher rühren sie? Lassen sich Unterschiede feststellen, die Hinweise auf eine Auseinanderentwicklung der beiden Kulturräume geben?Die Analyse lässt zahlreiche Gemeinsamkeiten zutage treten. Es zeigt sich, dass der typologische Vergleich literarischer Texte dazu beitragen kann, aktuelle Entwicklungen, in denen die trennenden Elemente zwischen Westen und Osten stark betont werden, historisch präziser einzuordnen. Doch auch der herausgearbeitete Unterschied kann aufschlussreich sein: Er lässt sich als Vorzeichen auf die Auseinanderentwicklung beider Kulturräume im Bereich der Ambiguitätstoleranz deuten.
    Abstract: The current media coverage emphasizes the differences between “Christian West” and “Islamic East”. However, a similarity in development can be found by having a closer look at the history of the Islamic world. For example, a period during the rule of the Timurid dynasty is also known as ‘Renaissance’. It took place at the same time as the ‘Renaissance’ under the rule of the Habsburgs in the Holy Roman Empire.This apparent similarity is used as a starting point for an analysis of the situation of the two cultural regions around 900/1500. The powerful dominions of the Habsburgs and the Timurids were ruled by the emperors Maximilian the First and Babur during that time. They both wrote self-testimonies which have been used for a comparative analysis. The thesis seeks to provide answers to the following questions: Which kind of important similarities can be found in the texts, and where do they originate? Can significant differences be identified which may reveal the starting point of the diverging development of the cultures?The results of the analysis indicate many similarities in the self-presentations. They show that a typological comparison of literary texts can lead to a more precise and historically correct interpretation than that of current trends, which rather promote differences between the cultures of West and East. Even the detected difference can be insightful: it is seen as an early sign of divergence of the two cultures in the area of intolerance of ambiguities.
