    Abstract: With the largest Muslim population in Western Europe, France has faced a number of critiques in its attempts to assimilate Muslims into an ostensibly secular (but predominantly Catholic) state and society. This book challenges traditional analyses that emphasise the conflict between Muslims and the French state and broader French society, by exploring the intersection of Muslim faith with other identities, as well as the central roles of Muslims in French civil society, politics and the media. The tensions created by attacks on French soil by Islamic State have contributed to growing acceptance of the Islamophobic discourse of Marine Le Pen and her far-right Front National party, and debates about issues such as headscarves and burkinis have garnered worldwide attention. Downing addresses these issues from a new angle, eschewing the traditional us-and-them narrative and offering a more nuanced account based on people’s actual lived experiences.     Abstract: »Niemals« werde man Deniz Yücel nach Deutschland ausliefern, erklärte der türkische Staatspräsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan im Frühjahr 2017, jedenfalls nicht, solange er im Amt sei. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt befand sich der deutsch-türkische Journalist seit zwei Monaten im Hochsicherheitsgefängnis Silivri Nr. 9 bei Istanbul. 10 Monate später wurde er unter abenteuerlichen Umständen endlich freigelassen. Die Inhaftierung des Türkei-Korrespondenten der Welt führte in Deutschland zu einer riesigen Solidaritätsbewegung und sorgte für die größte Belastung der deutsch-türkischen Beziehungen seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Zugleich entfacht der Fall in Deutschland eine Debatte über das Verhältnis der Deutschtürken zu beiden Ländern. In seinem Buch erzählt Deniz Yücel, wie er dieses Jahr in Einzelhaft verbrachte, welchen Schikanen er ausgesetzt war und wie es ihm gelang, immer wieder die Überwachung zu überlisten. Er schildert, was ihm die Unterstützung seiner Frau Dilek Mayatürk und die »Free Deniz«-Kampagne bedeutete und warum der Kühlschrank das sicherste Versteck in der Gefängniszelle ist. Es ist eine Geschichte von Willkür und Erpressung, aber auch eine Geschichte von Solidarität, Liebe und Widerstand. Zugleich zeichnet Deniz Yücel die Entwicklung nach, die die Türkei in den vergangenen Jahren durchgemacht hat, vom hoffnungsvollen Aufbruch der Gezi-Revolte über den Kurdenkonflikt, die Flüchtlingskrise und den Putschversuch bis zum vorläufigen Ende: Erdogans Festigung der Macht mit den Wahlen vom Frühjahr 2018.

    Abstract: Debating Women's Citizenship, 1930-1960' is about the agency of Indian feminists and nationalists whose careers straddle the transition of colonial India to an independent India. It addresses some of the critical aspects of the encounter, engagement and dialogue between the Indian state and its women citizens, in particular, how this generation conceptualised the relationship between citizenship, equality and gender justice, and the various spheres in which the meaning and application of this citizenship was both broadened and narrowed, renegotiated and pursued. The book focuses on a cohort of nationalists and feminists who were leading members of the All India Women's Conference (AIWC) and the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). 0Drawing on the richness and depth of life histories through autobiography and oral interviews, together with archival research, this book excavates the mental products of these women's lives, their ideas, their writings and their discourse, to develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the feminist political personas of this generation, and how these personas negotiated the political and social terrains of their time. The book attempts to produce a new picture of this era, one in which there was far more activity and engagement with the state and with civil society on the part of this generation than previously acknowledged

    Abstract: "The Power of Place Riots, strikes, and protests broke out in the streets of Shanghai and Bombay, renamed Mumbai in 1995, with impressive frequency during the twentieth century. Many of the landmark protests and social movements had close connections with the neighborhoods, workplaces, and civic space of each city. By the late twentieth century, as the political geography of each city changed rapidly with the commodification of urban land, so too did the patterns of political contention. Using a comparative historical lens, Frazier chronicles the political biographies of these two metropolises and leading centers of manufacturing and finance. Debates over ideology, citizenship, and political representation took material form through clashes over housing, jobs, police violence, public space, among much else in the lived experience of urban residents. Frazier puts contemporary debates over informal housing, eviction of inner-city residents, scarcities of manufacturing jobs, and questions of unequal citizenship in illuminating historical context"--

    Abstract: What do deep fried mars bars, cod, and Bulgarian yoghurt have in common? Each have become symbolic foods with specific connotations, located to a very specific place and country. This book explores the role of food in society as a means of interrogating the concept of the nation-state and its sub-units, and reveals how the nation-state in its various disguises has been and is changing in response to accelerated globalisation. The chapters investigate various stages of national food: its birth, emergence, and decline, and why sometimes no national food emerges. By collecting and analysing a wide range of case studies from countries including Portugal, Mexico, the USA, Bulgaria, Scotland, and Israel, the book illustrates ways in which various social forces work together to shape social and political realities concerning food. The contributors, hailing from anthropology, history, sociology and political science, investigate the significance of specific food cultures, cuisines, dishes, and ingredients, and their association with national identity. In so doing, it becomes clearer how these two things interact, and demonstrates the scope and direction of the current study of food and nationalism.

    Abstract: Nordirland und das spanische Baskenland waren über Jahrzehnte geprägt von politischer Gewalt. Als politische Strategie kommt Gewalt jedoch besonders in Demokratien nicht ohne Legitimation aus. Die fortdauernde Existenz bewaffneter Gruppen in beiden Regionen lässt sich daher nur vor dem Hintergrund der Perzeption ihrer Gewalt und des Staatshandelns erklären. Das Augenmerk dieser Studie liegt darum auf den öffentlichen Aushandlungsprozessen der nationalistischen Bewegungen. Was wurde unter Gewalt verstanden? Welche Ausprägungen als verboten oder gar als geboten angesehen? Die Analyse der Gewaltdiskurse zeigt, wie es zum Ende der Gewaltanwendung kam, ohne dass die bewaffneten Gruppen ihre Kernziele erreicht hatten.

    Abstract: Ausgehend von einer Kritik der sozialen Wirklichkeit des Libanon entwickelt Nassif Nassar (geb. 1940) eine politische Philosophie, deren Relevanz über den arabischen Raum hinausgeht. Sein Konzept des Liberalismus mit Gemeinsinn fordert zum einen vom Einzelnen ein kritisch-offenes Vernunftdenken ein, das in Abgrenzung zur Absolutheit partikular-gemeinschaftlicher Wahrheitsansprüche bescheiden auftritt. Es soll seine Postulate aus Respekt vor und im alltäglichen Dialog mit den Überzeugungen anderer sowie im Abgleich mit gesamtgesellschaftlichen Interessen kontinuierlich kritisch hinterfragen. Zum anderen verteidigt dieser Liberalismus individuelle Rechte, deren Ursprung Nassar auf ein universelles Menschsein zurückführt. Aus diesen Prämissen folgt sowohl der Respekt individueller Freiheiten als auch ein staatlich-institutionell gestütztes solidarisches Handeln unter gleichgestellten Personen. Dieses Handeln ist zudem auf sieben intrinsische Werte und damit über Rechtsansprüche hinaus auf ein holistisches Gerechtigkeitsverständnis ausgerichtet. Grundlage einer in diesem Sinne liberal-gemeinsinnigen Gesellschaft ist ein schulischer Philosophieunterricht, in dem der Einzelne in Konversation mit der Philosophiegeschichte zum kritisch denkenden sowie über die Grenzen seiner partikularen Gemeinschaft hinaus solidarisch handelnden Staatsbürger ausgebildet wird. Dieses Buch ist das erste, das sich mit der Philosophie Nassif Nassars auseinandersetzt. Es zeigt, welch wichtige Rolle (selbst-)kritisches Denken in zeitgenössischen arabischen Diskursen spielt. Zudem illustriert es, wo die 'westliche Philosophie' in Nassars Ideenwelt Anschlussmöglichkeiten findet. Denn es scheint, dass in Zukunft auf bestimmte Probleme, die etwa globale Prozesse des sozialen Wandels oder der Verlust sozialer Kohäsionen mit sich bringen, überhaupt nur noch eine transkulturell ausgerichtete Philosophie plausible Antworten liefern kann.

It argues that some of the most influential academic accounts of the country's political culture, particularly those focusing on culture or racism, have neglected the key role of nationalism as an often unspoken, banal political principle and framing ideology. Suggesting that economic inequalities remain the key causal ingredient of English political life and, crucially, that these are being interpreted by individuals in relation to a nationalist/cosmopolitan ideological axis, the author argues that any effective, progressive political future will require a reinvigorated sense of political community. Italien kam schon mit Benito Mussolinis Fascismo die Vorreiterrolle im europäischen Faschismus zu. Dessen Inszenierung war Vorbild für Hitler. In Black Utopia, Alex Zamalin offers a groundbreaking examination of African American visions of social transformation and their counterutopian counterparts. Considering figures associated with racial separatism, postracialism, anticolonialism, Pan-Africanism, and Afrofuturism, he argues that the black utopian tradition continues to challenge American political thought and culture. Black Utopia spans black nationalist visions of an ideal Africa, the fiction of W.E.B. Du Bois, and Sun Ra's cosmic mythology of alien abduction. Zamalin casts Samuel R. Delany and Octavia E. Butler as political theorists and reflects on the antiutopian challenges of George S. Schuyler and Richard Wright. Their thought proves that utopianism, rather than being politically immature or dangerous, can invigorate political imagination.     Abstract: "Japan has experienced a radical shift in its self-perception. Before and during World War II, Japan's Bushido militarism led to its great colonial ventures in Asia and beyond. After the humiliating defeat and inscription of a peaceful constitution by the United States however, Japan embraced a peaceful and antimilitarist identity, which was based in its war-prohibiting Constitution and the foreign policy of the Yoshida doctrine. For most of the twentieth century, this 'merchant' identity was unusually stable. Japan refrained from any power policies outside of its borders, including United Nations peacekeeping missions, and focused on economic recovery and foreign trade. In the last three decades, however, Japan's self-perception along with its foreign policy seems to have changed. Gradually, Tokyo has conducted a number of foreign policy measures as well as internal symbolic gestures that would have been unthinkable a few decades ago and that symbolize a new and more confident Japan. Japanese politicians - including the Prime Minister Abe Shinzō - have adopted a new discourse depicting pacifism as a hindrance, rather than asset, to Japan's foreign policy. Japan is at a crossroads. But while political elites and a portion of the Japanese public call for re-articulation of Japan's peaceful national identity, there are still those who cherish the long-held idea of pacifism.     Abstract: Within the history of African American struggle against racist oppression that often verges on dystopia, a hidden tradition has depicted a transfigured world. Daring to speculate on a future beyond white supremacy, black utopian artists and thinkers offer powerful visions of ways of being that are built on radical concepts of justice and freedom. They imagine a new black citizen who would inhabit a world that soars above all existing notions of the possible.In Black Utopia, Alex Zamalin offers a groundbreaking examination of African American visions of social transformation and their counterutopian counterparts. Considering figures associated with racial separatism, postracialism, anticolonialism, Pan-Africanism, and Afrofuturism, he argues that the black utopian tradition continues to challenge American political thought and culture. Black Utopia spans black nationalist visions of an ideal Africa, the fiction of W. E. B. Du Bois, and Sun Ra’s cosmic mythology of alien abduction. Zamalin casts Samuel R. Delany and Octavia E. Butler as political theorists and reflects on the antiutopian challenges of George S. Schuyler and Richard Wright. Their thought proves that utopianism, rather than being politically immature or dangerous, can invigorate political imagination. Both an inspiring intellectual history and a critique of present power relations, this book suggests that, with democracy under siege across the globe, the black utopian tradition may be our best hope for combating injustice

Dies bringt für die Verwaltungen erhebliche neue Anforderungen mit sich und hat zu nicht unerheblichen Vollzugsproblemen geführt. Es existiert ein ebenenübergreifendes Vollzugssystem mit einer beachtlichen institutionellen und prozeduralen Komplexität. Nachdem die Probleme des Verwaltungshandelns zunächst wenig thematisiert worden waren, hat sich die Diskussion hierzu mittlerweile deutlich intensiviert. Zudem haben das Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, die Bundesagentur für Arbeit sowie die Bundesländer begonnen, das bestehende Verwaltungsvollzugssystem zu reformieren, und auf kommunaler Ebene gibt es innovative Ansätze im Bereich der Integration.     Abstract: In the course of the refugee crisis, over 1.4 million refugees have arrived in Germany. This entails many new demands on administrative bodies and has led to considerable implementation problems. There is a cross-level implementation system of a substantial institutional and procedural complexity. The problems of administrative action were initially barely discussed. In the meantime, however, the discussion has intensified. In addition, the Federal Agency of Migration and Refugees, the Federal Labour Office and the federal states have begun to reform the existing administrative implementation system, and there are innovative approaches in the area of integration on a municipal level. The present volume draws up an interim balance on administrative action in the context of the refugee crisis and offers institutional strategies for addressing it for various federal levels.     Abstract: Ein Gespenst geht um in der Welt – das Gespenst des rabiaten Rechtspopulismus. Spätestens mit der Wahl Donald Trumps hat sich die Lage zugespitzt mit Angriffen auf Pressefreiheit und Gewaltenteilung. Gegen die liberale Demokratie. Wilhelm Heitmeyer hat diese Tendenzen frühzeitig thematisiert. 2001 warnte er, die Globalisierung gehe mit politischen und sozialen Kontrollverlusten einher, die zum Aufstieg des autoritären Kapitalismus, zu Demokratieentleerung und einem Erstarken des Rechtspopulismus führen könnten. In seinem neuen Buch knüpft er an diese Analyse an und macht sie für eine Diagnose der aktuellen Situation fruchtbar.     Abstract: This edited collection considers how transformations in contemporary societies have raised questions surrounding our sense of community and belonging, alongside our management of increased diversity. Diversity and Contestations over Nationalism in Europe and Canada includes contributions that consider the rise in regional nationalism and a greater willingness to recognise that many states are multinational.     Abstract: While it might have been viable for states to isolate themselves from international politics in the nineteenth century, the intensity of economic and social globalisation in the twenty-first century has made this impossible. The contemporary world is an international world - a world of collective security systems and collective trade agreements. What does this mean for the sovereign state and 'its' international legal order? Two alternative approaches to the problem of 'governance' in the era of globalisation have developed in the twentieth century: universal internationalism and regional supranationalism. The first approaches collective action problems from the perspective of the 'sovereign equality' of all States. A second approach to transnational 'governance' has tried to re-build majoritarian governmental structures at the regional scale. This collection of essays wishes to analyse - and contrast - the two types of normative and decisional answers that have emerged as responses to the 'international' problems within our globalised world.

    Abstract: “The Kuwaiti population includes around 100,000 people - approximately 10 per cent of the Kuwaiti nationals -whose legal status is contested. Often considered `stateless', they have come to be known in Kuwait as biduns, from `bidun jinsiyya', which means literally `without nationality' in Arabic. As long-term residents with close geographical ties and intimate cultural links to the emirate, the biduns claim that they are entitled to Kuwaiti nationality because they have no other. But since 1986 the State of Kuwait, has considered them `illegal residents' on Kuwaiti territory. As a result, the biduns have been denied civil and human rights and treated as undocumented migrants, with no access to employment, health, education or official birth and death certificates. It was only after the first-ever bidun protest in 2011, that the government softened restrictions imposed upon them. Claire Beaugrand argues here that, far from being an anomaly, the position of the biduns is of central importance to the understanding of state formation processes in the Gulf countries, and the ways in which identity and the boundaries of nationality are negotiated and concretely enacted.” (Publisher's description)
