This openness and energy has led to a thriving pop music scene that is every bit the equal of Beijing's. But the musical culture of Guangzhou expresses the city's unique cosmopolitanism. A port city that once played a key role in China's maritime Silk Road, Guangzhou has long been an international hub. Now, rural migrants to the city are incorporating Chinese folk traditions into the musical tapestry. In Producing Sonic Worlds, ethnomusicologist Adam Kielman takes a deep dive into Guangzhou's music scene through two bands, Wanju Chuanzhang (Toy Captain) and Mabang (Caravan), that express ties to their rural homelands as well as cosmopolitan musical connections. These bands make music that captures the intersection of the global and local that has come to define Guangzhou, for example by writing songs with a popular Jamaican reggae beat and lyrics in their distinct regional dialects incomprehensible to their audiences. These bands create a sound both instantly recognizable and totally foreign, international and hyper local.     Abstract: Composer Alec Wilder's 'American Popular Song' is widely recognized as the definitive book on American popular song. In this volume, which achieved immediate praise and recognition upon its publication, Wilder discusses some 800 songs from the American Songbook, offering a composer's insight, accessible music analysis, as well has his strong personal biases. Nearly 50 years later, this classic study has received a much-needed revision. While leaving Wilder's colorful prose and brazen opinions intact, language, style, and musical nomenclature have been updated to reflect current usage. The musical examples mostly remain, but piano score notation has been replaced with lead-sheet notation: melody, chords, and lyrics.     Abstract: "Like many states emerging from oppressive political rule, Taiwan saw a cultural explosion in the late 1980s, when four decades of martial law under the Chinese National Party ended. As a multicultural, multilingual society with a complicated history of migration and colonization, Taiwanese people met their political transformation and newfound freedom with a host of stories waiting to be told and identities longing for expression. In Renegade Rhymes, ethnomusicologist Meredith Schweig shows how rap music has become a powerful outlet for exploring the complicated ethnic, cultural, and political history of Taiwan. Schweig draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork to explain how rap's storytelling component became such a vital tool for working out Taiwanese identity and grappling with cultural history. She takes readers to rap festivals, music video sets, hip-hop clubs, and creative collectives in which members participate in rap battles and study under an experienced teacher. As Schweig shows, MCs from marginalized ethnic groups in Taiwan seized on this music of resistance, infusing it with important aspects of their own local identities, languages, and storytelling traditions. We see how these musicians localize rap as a way to challenge longstanding political mythologies and redeem individual and community narratives from the totalizing influence of government and commercial interests.     Abstract: In Sound Alignments, a transnational group of scholars explores the myriad forms of popular music that circulated across Asia during the Cold War. Challenging the conventional alignments and periodizations of Western cultural histories of the Cold War, they trace the routes of popular music, examining how it took on new meanings and significance as it traveled across Asia, from India to Indonesia, Hong Kong to South Korea, China to Japan. From studies of how popular musical styles from the Americas and Europe were adapted to meet local exigencies to how socialist-bloc and nonaligned Cold War organizations facilitated the circulation of popular music throughout the region, the contributors outline how music forged and challenged alliances, revolutions, and countercultures.     Abstract: From colonialism to anticolonialism, from nationalism to postnationalism, this text explores how gwoka participates in five auralities, fields of sonic relations that make audible multiple - and often seemingly contradictory - cultural belongings and political longings. Drawing from Edouard Glissant's poetics of relation and re-interpreting creolization as a double play of resistance and accommodation, 'Creolized Aurality' moves away from narratives of anticolonial rupture and overcoming to elucidate (post)coloniality as an unstable relational matrix from which emerges a politics caught in the tension between a struggle for sovereignty and demands for full citizenship.

    Abstract: "This book tells the story of a form of music that enjoys unparalleled popularity in a country that itself possesses instant name recognition but is very little known and very little studied. Panamanian música típica or cumbia, as this music is also called, is intrinsically linked to the social and political history of a sliver of land that connects North and South America while providing passage between two great oceans. I show that to appreciate música típica is to appreciate the development of the Isthmian crossing, the construction of the Panama Canal, the movement of people along this corridor and, most significantly, the lives of rural people living along its banks and deeper in the Panamanian interior. In this work, I draw on both archival and ethnographic research to reconstruct a 20th-century social history of Panamanian música típica. I examine música típica in relation to the rise of populist Panamanian nationalism that often equated cosmopolitanism and Afro-Panamanian cultural influence with U.S. imperialism. Notwithstanding its widespread national popularity and identification with rural society, música típica has infrequently been embraced as a form of official musical nationalism. Its links to Panamanian nationalist sentiment are often indirect and profoundly ambiguous. In focusing on musicians and their approaches to musical fusion, varied performance strategies, and the forging of links to both rural and urban economies, I show how música típica performers were not only central to the development of a sense of nationhood, but also actively cultivated performance identities that straddled some the most pronounced schisms in Panamanian society of the period"--
