Abstract: This collection explores theoretical and empirical developments in the anthropology of the Caucasus and Central Asia, originating in or shaped by the Soviet era. Special attention is paid to the creation of local and national schools as well as to the role of institutional and biographical dis/continuities. Within the academic field of anthropology in the Soviet republics, Russia-based research institutes and regional branches of the former Soviet Academy of Sciences played a special role. Explorations of this role and of the impact of ideology are pertinent to the controversial question as to whether the Soviet Union was essentially a colonial enterprise. The authors include leading anthropologists from the Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as regional specialists from the Russian Federation and western countries.

Abstract: Assuming that women's empowerment would accelerate the pace of social change in rural Nepal, the World Bank urged the Nepali government to undertake a "Gender Activities Project" within an ongoing long-term water-engineering scheme. The author, an anthropologist specializing in bureaucratic organizations and gender studies, was hired to monitor the project. Analyzing her own experience as a practicing "development expert," she demonstrates that the professed goal of "women's empowerment" is a pretext for promoting economic organizational goals and the interests of local elites. She shows how a project intended to benefit women, through teaching them literary and agricultural skills, fails to provide them with any of the promised resources. Going beyond the conventional analysis that positions aid givers vis-à-vis powerless victimized recipients, she draws attention to the complexity of the process and the active role played by the Nepalese rural women who pursue their own interests and aspirations within this unequal world. The book makes an important contribution to the growing critique of "development" projects and of women's development projects in particular. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: Focusing on colonial Kenya, this book shows how conflicts between state authorities and Africans over witchcraft-related crimes provided an important space in which the meanings of justice, law and order in the empire were debated. Katherine Luongo discusses the emergence of imperial networks of knowledge about witchcraft. She then demonstrates how colonial concerns about witchcraft produced an elaborate body of jurisprudence about capital crimes. The book analyzes the legal wrangling that produced the Witchcraft Ordinances in the 1910s, the birth of an anthro-administrative complex surrounding witchcraft in the 1920s, the hotly contested Wakamba Witch Trials of the 1930s, the explosive growth of legal opinion on witch-murder in the 1940s, and the unprecedented state-sponsored cleansings of witches and Mau Mau adherents during the 1950s. A work of anthropological history, this book develops an ethnography of Kamba witchcraft or uoi.Review: 'This is one of the finest historical ethnographies of witchcraft and statecraft that I have read. Luongo simultaneously gives account of Kamba witchcraft and of the British colonial juridical system through which it was policed - two cosmologies that not only came into conflict but that also profoundly shaped one another over time. The rich detail of the work - a reading of the archives at once anthropological and historical - makes for captivating reading and, in light of the continuing, sometimes explosive, juxtaposition of witchcraft and formal legal systems in postcolonial East Africa and beyond, a work of significant contemporary relevance.' Harry G. West, SOAS, University of London 'Where witchcraft is very often taken to be a peculiar aspect of Africans' mentality, Luongo's fine book shows how the occult was translated, disciplined, and organized by British and Kenyan brokers. The regulation of witchcraft was one of the tensions of empire, an occupation in which Kenyan practitioners played a role alongside British authorities. Luongo's book allows us to see how witches haunted colonial power, giving us new insights into the uncertainties of governance.' Derek Peterson, University of Michigan, and author of Creative Writing: Translation, Bookkeeping, and the Work of Imagination in Kenya 'Luongo's vivid style of anthropological history brings out the full complexity of colonial officials' positioning toward the witchcraft conundrum. But the interest of this groundbreaking study is much broader. Luongo's imaginative analysis of rich legal data and people's memories shows witchcraft to be an ongoing, basic challenge to state formation as such, up to the present day.' Peter Geschiere, University of Amsterdam, and author of The Modernity of Witchcraft: Politics of the Occult in Postcolonial Africa 'Through its analysis of judicial matters concerning witchcraft, this book makes an important contribution to understandings of the construction of both the colonial and postcolonial state. It illustrates the reliance of an anthropological history on legal research.' Herve Maupeu, Universite de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour '[Witchcraft and Colonial Rule in Kenya, 1900-1955] forces readers to re-imagine the construct of law and perceptions of order in relation to empire and will undoubtedly become essential reading for Africanist scholars of various specialities.' Abstract: Researching violence and conflict can be challenging for a variety of reasons, including security risks to researchers and informants, restricted or lack of access to informants and field sites, and poor reliability of official data. Traditional methodological approaches may need to be adapted, and new methods may be called for. In addition, such research carries ethical challenges about representation of informants and information and possible use of the research for harmful ends. This book, drawing on research conducted throughout Africa in conflict zones and other insecure environments, considers the everyday dilemmas researchers face. It provides essential contributions to ongoing challenging debates about the use of alternative and mixed methods in social science research.

Abstract: In this book, William Kelleher Storey shows that guns and discussions about guns during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries were fundamentally important to the establishment of racial discrimination in South Africa. Relying mainly on materials held in archives and libraries in Britain and South Africa, Storey explains the workings of the gun trade and the technological development of the firearms. He relates the history of firearms to ecological, political, and social changes, showing that there is a close relationship between technology and politics in South Africa.Review: Review of the hardback: '... without doubt the most stimulating and significant discussion concerning South Africa's colonial 'gun society' to have appeared since the publication in 1971 of the influential series of articles on guns in colonial Africa in the Journal of African History. Storey's study is consequently absolutely essential reading, not only for military historians of South Africa in the colonial period, but for all those with an interest in related technology, hunting, ecology, culture and society.' Abstract: "This history of African slavery from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries examines how indigenous African slavery developed within an international context. The new edition revises statistical material and incorporates recent research"--This history of African slavery from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries examines how indigenous African slavery developed within an international context. Paul E. Lovejoy discusses the medieval Islamic slave trade and the Atlantic trade as well as the enslavement process and the marketing of slaves. He considers the impact of European abolition and assesses slavery's role in African history. The book corrects the accepted interpretation that African slavery was mild and resulted in the slaves' assimilation. Instead, slaves were used extensively in production, although the exploitation methods and the relationships to world markets differed from those in the Americas. Nevertheless, slavery in Africa, like slavery in the Americas, developed from its position on the periphery of capitalist Europe. This new edition revises all statistical material on the slave trade demography and incorporates recent research and an updated bibliography.Review: Praise for the previous editions of Transformations in Slavery: "... it must be stressed that this is an important contribution to African studies, which also synthesizes available information about the slave trade. It is already being widely used for student essays, and looks set to become one of the textbooks of African history for many years to come." - William Gervase Clarence-Smith, African Affairs "Lovejoy produced a book which was both comprehensive and analytic ... this book provided the framework for much subsequent research on African slavery. Lovejoy looked at early slavery and at the impact of a series of expanding frontiers in expanding the trade and redefining the use of slaves within Africa." - Martin A. Klein, Canadian Journal of African Studies "... the author is to be congratulated for his temerity in tackling a difficult task and producing a viable, comprehensive, and emotionally balanced work which will be of great help to scholars and should lead to lively discussion." - Suzanne Miers, Canadian Journal of African Studies "This is a very important book. It will almost certainly excite controversy, for while he is clear about the intensification of servitude as a consequence of the external trade he does not portray indigenous systems as benign. Withal he pushes slavery into the forefront of African historiography and there can be little doubt it belongs there." - Richard Rathbone, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies

Abstract: The emergence of symbolic culture, classically identified with the European cave paintings of the Ice Age, is now seen, in the light of recent groundbreaking discoveries, as a complex nonlinear process taking root in a remote past and in different regions of the planet. In this book the archaeologists responsible for some of these new discoveries, flanked by ethologists interested in primate cognition and cultural transmission, evolutionary psychologists modelling the emergence of metarepresentations, as well as biologists, philosophers, neuro-scientists and an astronomer combine their research findings. Their results call into question our very conception of human nature and animal behaviour, and they create epistemological bridges between disciplines that build the foundations for a novel vision of our lineage's cultural trajectory and the processes that have led to the emergence of human societies as we know them.

Abstract: During the peak of apartheid, the South African Defence Force (SADF) killed close to a thousand Namibian exiles at Cassinga in southern Angola. This happened on May 4 1978. In recent years, Namibia commemorates this day, nationwide, in remembrance of those killed and disappeared following the Cassinga attack. During each Cassinga anniversary, survivors are modelled into 'living testimonies' of the Cassinga massacre. Customarily, at every occasion marking this event, a survivor is delegated to unpack, on behalf of other survivors, 'memories of Cassinga' so that the inexperienced audience understands what happened on that day. Besides survivors' testimonies, edited video footage showing, among others, wrecks in the camp, wounded victims laying in hospital beds, an open mass grave with dead bodies, SADF paratroopers purportedly marching in Cassinga is also screened for the audience to witness agony of that day. Interestingly, the way such presentations are constructed draw challenging questions. For example, how can the visual and oral presentations of the Cassinga violence epitomize actual memories of the Cassinga massacre? How is it possible that such presentations can generate a sense of remembrance against forgetfulness of those who did not experience that traumatic event? When I interviewed a number of survivors (2007 - 2010), they saw no analogy between testimony (visual or oral) and memory. They argued that memory unlike testimony is personal (solid, inexplicable and indescribable). Memory is a true picture of experiencing the Cassinga massacre and enduring pain and suffering over the years. In considering survivors' challenge to the visually and orally obscured realities of the Cassinga massacre, this study will use a more lateral and alternative approach. This is a method of attempting to interrogate, among other issues of this study, the understanding of Cassinga beyond the inexperienced economies of this event production. The study also explores the different agencies, mainly political, that fuel and exacerbate the victims' unending pathos. These invasive miseries are anchored, according to survivors, in the disrupted expectations; or forsaken human dignity of survivors and families of the missing victims, especially following Namibia's independence in 1990.

Abstract: Assessing the limits of pluralism, this book examines different types of political inclusion and exclusion and their distinctive dimensions and dynamics. Why are particular social groups excluded from equal participation in political processes? How do these groups become more fully included as equal participants? Often, the critical issue is not whether a group is included but how it is included. Collectively, these essays elucidate a wide range of inclusion or exclusion: voting participation, representation in legislative assemblies, representation of group interests in processes of policy formation and implementation, and participation in discursive processes of policy framing. Covering broad territory-from African Americans to Asian Americans, the transgendered to the disabled, and Latinos to Native Americans-this volume examines in depth the give and take between how policies shape political configuration and how politics shape policy. At a more fundamental level, Ericson and his contributors raise some traditional and some not-so-traditional issues about the nature of democratic politics in settings with a multitude of group identities.

Abstract: The essays collected in Cultivating the Colonies demonstrate how the relationship between colonial power and nature reveals the nature of power. Each essay explores how colonial governments translated ideas about the management of exotic nature and foreign people into practice, and how they literally "got their hands dirty" in the business of empire. The eleven essays include studies of animal husbandry in the Philippines, farming in Indochina, and indigenous medicine in India. They are global in scope, ranging from the Russian North to Mozambique, examining the consequences of colonialism on nature, including its impact on animals, fisheries, farmlands, medical practices, and even the diets of indigenous people. Cultivating the Colonies establishes beyond all possible doubt the importance of the environment as a locus for studying the power of the colonial state.

Abstract: Hundreds of tribal libraries, archives, and other information centers offer the services patrons would expect from any library: circulation of materials, collection of singular items (such as oral histories), and public services (such as summer reading programs). What is unique in these settings is the commitment to tribal protocols and expressions of tribal lifeways-from their footprints on the land to their architecture and interior design, institutional names, signage, and special services, such as native language promotion. This book offers a collection of articles devoted to tribal libraries and archives and provides an opportunity for tribal librarians to share their stories, challenges, achievements, and aspirations with the larger professional community. Part one introduces the tribal community library, providing context and case studies for libraries in California, Alaska, Oklahoma, Hawai'i, and in other countries. The role of tribal libraries and archives in native language recovery and revitalization is also addressed in this section. Part two features service functions of tribal information centers, addressing the library facility, selection, organization, instruction, and programming/outreach. Part three includes a discussion of the types of records that tribes might collect, legal issues, and snapshot descriptions of noteworthy archival collections. The final part covers strategic planning, advice on working in the unique environments of tribal communities, advocacy and marketing, continuing education plans for library staff, and time management tips that are useful for anyone working in a small library setting.

Abstract: Prior to leading the Twenty-second Frobenius Expedition (1938-1939), to the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, Helmut Petri had developed a wide range of interests that encompassed the fields of physical anthropology, ethnology, history, prehistory, economics and philosophy.Petri`s volume Sterbende welt in nordwest Australien, first appeared in 1954 and presents the complexities and the conundrums that appear within the concepts that underpin Ngarinyin religious philosophy. At the time of study and writing Petri envisioned a dim, if not grim, future for the Aboriginal people of the Kimberley as the frontier rapidly encroached. He noted in detail how local knowledge was being rapidly lost, initially as clans diminished or were extinguished and also as new religious cults, based on alien culture heroes and embracing a wider concept of `Aboriginality` replaced the locale specific cults associated with the Wóndjina (Wanjina) and associated beings In his later writings Petri was to acknowledge that the dynamics of cultural change rather than being totally destructive averted stagnation and facilitated cultural renaissance and continuity.Petri also writes on the Nyigina of the lower Fitzroy River basin, presenting more information on the Nyigina than previously existed at the time. Even in the 1930s Petri was, for various reasons, able to work with only three people that he believed had a more or less full grounding in Nyigina culture.Petri was to return to Australia after the war, 1954-55, locating himself at Anna Plains Station and also venturing to the Eastern Goldfields and a further ten field trips to the north west between 1960 and 1984.This translation of Sterbende welt in nordwest Australien reveals the depths of Petri`s grasp of the anthropology of peoples of the north Kimberley. It also balances the work by scholars such as Elkin who focused primarily on social organisation and totemism in the Kimberley. This work demonstrates that it is imperative that English-speaking scholars realise that this, and other similar early scholarly works in languages other than English, must be considered and digested before it is possible to have a solid grounding in the anthropology of the area.It is hoped that the descendants of the Ngarinyin and the Nyigina, as well other Aboriginal peoples of the Kimberley view the publication as a memorial to ways of life that although much changed over time, still underpins their identity today. Abstract: "World-renowned fimmaker & feminist, postcolonial thinker Trinh T. Minh-ha is one of the most powerful & articulate voices in both independent filmmaking & cultural politics. Elsewhere, Within Here is an engaging look at travel across national borders--as a foreigner, a tourist, an immigrant, a refugee -- in a pre- and post-9/11 world. Who is welcome where? What does it mean to feel out of place in the country you call home? When does the stranger appear in these times of dark metamorphoses? These are some of the issues addressed by the author as she examines the cultural meaning and complexities of travel, immigration, home and exile. The boundary, seen both as a material and immaterial event, is where endings pass into beginnings. Building upon themes present in her earlier work on hybridity and displacement in the median passage, and illuminating the ways in which "every voyage can be said to involve a re-siting of boundaries," Trinh T. Minh-ha leads her readers through an investigation of what it means to be an insider and an outsider in this "epoch of global fear'." -- Back cover

Abstract: Although Rwanda is among the most Christian countries in Africa, in the 1994 genocide, church buildings became the primary killing grounds. To explain why so many Christians participated in the violence, this book looks at the history of Christian engagement in Rwanda and then turns to a rich body of original national- and local-level research to argue that Rwanda's churches have consistently allied themselves with the state and played ethnic politics. Comparing two local Presbyterian parishes in Kibuye before the genocide demonstrates that progressive forces were seeking to democratize the churches. Just as Hutu politicians used the genocide of Tutsi to assert political power and crush democratic reform, church leaders supported the genocide to secure their own power. The fact that Christianity inspired some Rwandans to oppose the genocide demonstrates that opposition by the churches was possible and might have hindered the violence. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: Zwölf Jahre war der Friedensnobelpreisträger Mohamed El Baradei Chef der UNO-Atomwaffenkontrolleure. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: In the early decades of the 19th century, Indigenous Australians suffered devastating losses at the hands of British colonists, who largely ignored their sovereignty and even their humanity. At the same time, however, a new wave of Christian humanitarians were arriving in the colonies, troubled by Aboriginal suffering and arguing that colonists had obligations towards the people they had dispossessed. These white philanthropists raised questions which have shaped Australian society ever since.Did Indigenous Australians have rights to land, rationing, education and cultural survival? If so, how should these be guaranteed, and what would people have to give up in return? Would charity and paternalism lead to effective government or dismal failure - to a powerful defence of an oppressed people, or to new forms of oppression? In Good Faith? paints a vivid picture of life on Australia`s first missions and protectorate stations, examining the tensions between charity and rights, empathy and imperialism, as well as the intimacy, dependence, resentment and obligations that developed between missionary philanthropists and the people they tried to protect and control. In this work, Mitchell brings to life hitherto neglected moments in Australia`s history, and traces the origins of dilemmas still present today.

Abstract: The Humanist Imperative in South Africa includes twenty-six multi-disciplinary essays and reflections originally presented and discussed at the two symposia of the New Humanism Project held at STIAS in June 2009 and February 2010. The authors are leading academics and public figures drawn from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, all sharing a common concern: "How can our fledgling democracy not only survive but flourish ?" The essays focus on the humanisms that have shaped our society and its constitution; what it means to be human beings together in South Africa; and issues of economic and social justice, human dignity and rights. Developing mutual respect, listening critically and constructively to each other, and promoting a wider conversation are of vital importance. Fostering programmes that enable all people to attain their full potential are identified as an urgent priority. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Modern political anthropology began in 1940 with the first systematic comparative studies of how primitive societies maintained law and order. The focus was on government and the presence or absence of state institutions. Recently, interest has shifted to the study of power, to examining the manipulation of political relations, and to the task of elaborating a classification of governmental systems that will throw light on the important problems for research. Abstract: Women have traditionally played a vital part in Islam throughout Central Asia - the vast area from the Caspian Sea to Siberia. With this ground-breaking and original study, Razia Sultanova examines the experiences of Muslim women in the region and the ways in which religion has shaped their daily lives and continues to do so today. 'From Shamanism to Sufism' explores the fundamental interplay between religious belief and the cultural heritage of music and dance and is the first book to focus particularly on the role of women. Ritual and music are at the heart of Central Asian and Islamic culture, not only at weddings and funerals but in all aspects of everyday life. Through her in-depth analysis of these facets of cultural life within Central Asian society, 'From Shamanism to Sufism' offers important insights into the lives of the societies in the region. The role of women has often been neglected in studies of religious culture and this book fills an enormous gap, restoring women to their rightful historical and cultural context. It will be essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the History or Religion of Central Asia or in Global Islam.
