Abstract: In January 2017 Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, said that it looks as if the world is preparing for war. And Pope Francis noted that war is already being fought piecemeal around the world. In this book we argue that since violence begets violence, we must privilege soft power over military might, if we are to have peace on earth. Gandhi used soft power in India overcame British military might, and King used it to bring about integration in the 1960s. Soft power brought about the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, the Kyoto climate agreement, and Iran's agreement to refrain from making nuclear weapons. Soft power involves both dialogue between world leaders and conflict resolution, and privileges diplomacy over war. As General James Mattis said in 2013, "If you don't fund the State Department fully, then I need to buy more ammunition

Keywords: Table etiquette-United States ; Dinners and dining-United States ; Electronic books ; Electronic books
Abstract: This practical and humorous guide helps readers learn appropriate manners so they can enjoy the pleasures of good food, good drink, and good company without worrying about what behavior is proper. Chapters cover how to be a good host, how to be a good guest, and how to behave at business events, cocktail parties, formal dinners, and restaurants. There is also a unique chapter discussing pet peeves and how to handle them with grace, civility, and appropriate manners. What's the proper way to hold a wine glass? What's an appropriate gift to bring a hostand what shouldn't you bring? How should you correctly introduce guests to each other? If you're the host, how do you determine who should sit next to whom? What should you do if you don't want to drink alcohol at a cocktail party? What is appropriate cell phone usage at a business dinner? Here are easy-to-implement answers to these and many other important etiquette questions. Lavishly illustrated with memorable full-color photographs that highlight both good and bad table manners, Modern American Manners is full of friendly advice for business professionals, college students entering the workplace, and anyone needing a refresher course or an introduction to proper behavior

    DDC: 303.4834
Keywords: Affect (Psychology) - Computer simulation ; Human-computer interaction ; Artificial intelligence-Social aspects ; Emotional intelligence ; Electronic books
Abstract: For Readers of Ray Kurzweil and Michio Kaku, a New Look at the Cutting Edge of Artificial Intelligence Imagine a robotic stuffed animal that can read and respond to a child's emotional state, a commercial that can recognize and change based on a customer's facial expression, or a company that can actually create feelings as though a person were experiencing them naturally. Heart of the Machine explores the next giant step in the relationship between humans and technology: the ability of computers to recognize, respond to, and even replicate emotions. Computers have long been integral to our lives, and their advances continue at an exponential rate. Many believe that artificial intelligence equal or superior to human intelligence will happen in the not-too-distance future; some even think machine consciousness will follow. Futurist Richard Yonck argues that emotion, the first, most basic, and most natural form of communication, is at the heart of how we will soon work with and use computers. Instilling emotions into computers is the next leap in our centuries-old obsession with creating machines that replicate humans. But for every benefit this progress may bring to our lives, there is a possible pitfall. Emotion recognition could lead to advanced surveillance, and the same technology that can manipulate our feelings could become a method of mass control. And, as shown in movies like Her and Ex Machina, our society already holds a deep-seated anxiety about what might happen if machines could actually feel and break free from our control. Heart of the Machine is an exploration of the new and inevitable ways in which mankind and technology will interact

Abstract: Through close textual analysis, detailed historical contextualization, and critical animal theory Bestiarium Judaicum examines how and to what ends German-Jewish writers (including Freud, Heine, and Kafka) drew upon the vast inventory of verbal and visual images of nonhuman animals disseminated for millennia to bestialize, debase, and justify the persecution of Jews

Abstract: Preschoolers tend to be social beings. Whether they are playing with dolls side by side, building block castles together, or rolling down hills with friends, most young children enjoy the company of others. Playing together comes naturally, but you can help them negotiate turn taking, learn how to mend hurt feelings, and practice communicating positively while they play. Social Development of Three- and Four-Year-Olds highlights the milestones children tend to reach during the preschool years as they develop socially. You will see classroom scenarios that can provide insights into some of the ways young children make social connections, express their preferences, and play together. As a guide and facilitator, you can share strategies that will help preschoolers learn to be cooperative team members and kind friends while having fun together. Part of the Gryphon House Growing Up in Stages series

Abstract: Bouncing back fast after having a baby is absolutely possible for anyone! Affectionately known as The FAB Mom on-air and online, Jill Simonian uses her trusted and entertaining expertise to set expecting and new moms on a distinctive, no-frills journey to help them "get over the bump" and bounce back fast after having a baby. Jill's frank tricks, somewhat against-the-grain tips, and laugh-out-loud tales involving famous names provide first-time moms a unique roadmap for managing and conquering the lifestyle challenges a newborn often brings. The FAB Mom's Guide offers a motivational style and practical solutions to inform, inspire, and empower even the most uncertain of new moms. From hanging an oversized mirror in your kitchen to opting out of nursing to spending entire days wearing only your underwear and beyond, Jill Simonian can help a new mother get organized, have fun, and feel in-control, happy, and reinvented within six months of having a baby. Encouraging women to tune out the drama and arming them with useful talk and tools to minimize exhaustion and maximize focus, Jill uncovers and reshapes the status quo for how FAB (an acronym for: Focused After Babies) a new mom's sense of self and life can truly be.

Abstract: The Marriage Paradox explores both national U.S. data and a smaller sample of emerging adults to find out how they really view marriage today. Interspersed with real stories and insight from emerging adults themselves, this book attempts to make sense of the increasingly paradoxical ways that young adults are thinking about marriage.
