Abstract: The Development of Managerial Culture examines the differences in underlying values and cultural distinctions in managerial cultures in Australia and Canada. It offers commentary on differences in attitudes to managerial culture and industrial relations through a comparison of national character development to provide context and insight for readers, The Development of Managerial Culture examines the differences in underlying values and cultural distinctions in managerial cultures in Australia and Canada. Despite a similar history of British colonial origins in Australia and Canada and despite both countries receiving English, Scottish and Irish immigrants, differences in management culture can be attributed, in large part, to the impact of the influence of the greater numbers of Irish Catholic migrants to Australia. This book argues that Canada, lacking the "Irish factor" in its cultural and socio-political development, derived much of its business culture from British colonial traditions. The Development of Managerial Culture offers a valuable commentary on differences in attitudes to managerial culture and industrial relations in both Canada and Australia. However, it remains a comparative study of national character development as a whole, in order to provide necessary context and insight for readers

Abstract: This edited collection explores the agency of women who do violence and have violence done to them. Topics covered include rape, pornography, prostitution, suicide bombing and domestic violence. The volume addresses such debates as the extent of women's agency in frameworks of the victim, survivor, or perpetrator; the power of gendered norms, constructs and stereotypes about female violence; and practical concerns about how feminists can escape polarisations in understandings of agency in order to deal with violence done to and by women. The volume contributes to the theoretical debate and is philosophical in its focus, whilst also seeking to draw on the insights of other disciplines. It also engages with practical questions, and offers some social and political responses to the issues examined. This book has one open access chapter under a CC BY license

Abstract: "Rights over territory are to most cosmopolitans nowadays what private property was to nineteenth-century socialists: a legally sanctioned institutionalization of theft. In the cosmopolitan imagination, territories are reminiscent of a long history of unlawful acts while the walls and armed checkpoints that are so often used to secure borders dividing people and populations rather than bringing them together. This study moves beyond this picture of territory as a mere object of domination and exploitation to offer a new perspective on the traditional cosmopolitan understanding of territory. It explores the process by which people constitute themselves as territorially defined political communities and argues that the ideal of collective self-determination incorporates a legally and politically inclusive notion of territories as non-ascriptive markers of belonging. By examining the implications of this argument, the text addresses controversial issues of contemporary political philosophy: citizenship, immigration, natural resources and, more generally, global distributive justice"--

Abstract: A collection of historical and ethnographic accounts, The Globalization of Asian Cuisines uses extensive empirical research to describe the increasingly transnational organization of culinary fields, multicultural culinary contact zones, and state-led culinary politics. Chapters include studies of the pathways in which Asian cuisines cross borders and interact with local culinary systems. Authors also study how cuisines from abroad enter Asian cities and are modified in transnational urban settings. This volume shows that cuisines in Asia are less and less produced locally but rather in networks of producers, suppliers, entrepreneurs, and patrons moving across borders. Multi-sited and cross-border ethnographic fieldwork along with comparative qualitative case studies uncover the culinary networks and the cultural politics of these traveling cuisines

Abstract: The modern bicycle as we know it today was developed in England in the 1880s. A decade later, cycling was already a popular spectator sport and a recreational fashion across western society. Women's rights, class mobility and a modern spirit of individualism helped fuel this bicycle boom. In China, on the other hand, the bicycle's ubiquity reflected state-controlled social uniformity. Briefly, it became a symbol of resistance in Tiananmen Square in the 1980s, but crushed by tanks it later turned into a downward marker of class with millions scrapped. In the 21st century, the bicycle is enjoying a global resurgence. It is favoured as a sustainable form of transport, while also reinventing itself as a chic and sportive fashion object, and a generic protest vehicle. With contradictory strands like these, the bicycle's cultural history is a rich subject for cross-cultural study. Beginning with the technical history of the bicycle's invention, and the socio-economic factors that precipitated it, the main focus of this book is the ever-changing cultural significance of the bicycle as an object, and of bicycling as a shifting, but ever popular social practice around the world.

Abstract: "The Republic of Sudan that emerged from the end of British rule in 1956 was a construction of colonialism with deep cultural divisions between those in the culturally Arab and religiously Islamic north and those in the primarily black African south. The history of Sudan since independence has been marked by two long and bloody civil wars and resulted in the secession of South Sudan in 2011. But both nations continue to face significant political and socio-economic challenges, while South Sudan is plagued by armed rebellion and political corruption. This moving and important volume by Sudan's former Minister of Culture and Information provides a factual and personal account of the break-up of Sudan. It lifts the veil on the country's often difficult past, exploring its troubled postcolonial history, and looks to the future in an attempt to provide solutions for both Sudan and South Sudan's many challenges
