Inhaltsverzeichnis Inhalt: C. Abstract: Anthropology of Eastern Religions: Ideas, Organizations, and Constituencies is a comparative survey of the world's major religious traditions as professional enterprises and, often, as social movements. Documenting the principle ideas behind Eastern religious traditions from an anthropological perspective, Murray J. Leaf demonstrates how these ideas have been used in building internal organizations that mobilize or fail to mobilize external support.

Abstract: From wicked queens, beautiful princesses, elves, monsters, and goblins to giants, glass slippers, poisoned apples, magic keys, and mirrors, the characters and images of fairy tales have cast a spell over readers and audiences, both adults and children, for centuries. These fantastic stories have travelled across cultural borders, and been passed on from generation to generation, ever-changing, renewed with each re-telling. Few forms of literature have greater powerto enchant us and rekindle our imagination than a fairy tale. But what is a fairy tale? Where do they come from and what do they mean? What do they try and communicate to us about morality, sexuality, and society? The range of fairy tales stretches across great distances and time; their history is entangled with folklore and myth, and their inspiration draws on ideas about nature and the supernatural, imagination and fantasy, psychoanalysis, and feminism. Marina Warner has loved fairy tales over a long writing life, and she explores here a multitude of tales through the ages, their different manifestations on the page, the stage, and the screen. From the phenomenal rise of Victorian and Edwardian literature to contemporary children's stories, Warner unfolds a glittering array of examples, from classics such as Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and The Sleeping Beauty, the Grimm Brothers' Hansel and Gretel, and HansAndersen's The Little Mermaid, to modern-day realizations including Walt Disney's Snow White and gothic interpretations such as Pan's Labyrinth. In ten succinct chapters, Marina Warner digs into a rich hoard of fairy tales in their brilliant and fantastical variations, in order to define a genre and evaluate a literary form that keeps shifting through time and history. Her book makes a persuasive case for fairy tale as a crucial repository of human understanding and culture.

Is mankind being updated, as prosthetist Hugh Herr predicts with his formula of »Humans 2.0«? The discussion about the high tech prosthetic limbs of Oscar Pistorius or about exciting, body contact media like Google Glass show a shift in concepts of physicality: an improvement procedure in or around the body is no longer considered a necessary compensation of deficits, but a desirable optimization and enhancement. Are bodies becoming »makeable«? Karin Harrasser situates these current discourses and practices of the body and designs a different view of them. How can we speak about technologies, media, and bodies from the perspective of partially sovereign action and para-humanity?   Rezension »Beeindruckender Essay.« Rolf Löchel, www.literaturkritik.de, 03.06.2014 »Ein spannender Ansatz.« Tanja Paar, diestandard.at, 03.12.2013 »Dieses [...]

Abstract: Sven Lindqvist is one of our most original writers on race, colonialism, and genocide, and his signature approachuniting travelogues with powerful acts of historical excavationrenders his books devastating and unforgettable. Now, for the first time, Lindqvist's most beloved works are available in one beautiful and affordable volume with a new introduction by Adam Hochschild. The Dead Do Not Die includes the full unabridged text of "Exterminate All the Brutes", called "a book of stunning range and near genius" by David Levering Lewis. In this work, Lindqvist uses Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as a point of departure for a haunting tour through the colonial past, retracing the steps of Europeans in Africa from the late eighteenth century onward and thus exposing the roots of genocide via his own journey through the Saharan desert. The full text of Terra Nullius is also included, for which Lindqvist traveled 7,000 miles through Australia in search of the lands the British had claimed as their own because it was inhabited by "lower races," the native Aboriginesnearly nine-tenths of whom were annihilated by whites. The shocking story of how "no man's land" became the province of the white man was called "the most original work on Australia and its treatment of Aboriginals I have ever read . . . marvelous" by Phillip Knightley, author of Australia.

Abstract: This issue discusses economic developments in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP), which continue to reflect the diversity of conditions prevailing across the region. Most high-income oil exporters, primarily in the GCC, continue to record steady growth and solid economic and financial fundamentals, albeit with medium-term challenges that need to be addressed. In contrast, other countries-Iraq, Libya, and Syria-are mired in conflicts with not only humanitarian but also economic consequences. And yet other countries, mostly oil importers, are making continued but uneven progress in advancing their economic agendas, often in tandem with political transitions and amidst difficult social conditions. In most of these countries, without extensive economic and structural reforms, economic prospects for the medium term remain insufficient to reduce high unemployment and improve living standards.

The traditional roles of employees and employers increasingly lose clear definition. Every individual forges his own destiny and performs, it seems, with virtuosity on the keyboard of self-management. Between the autonomous freedom, an enormous degree of performance concentration and biographical uncertainties, new forms of work emerge - but also new phenomena of stress. How do people deal with this while staying healthy and fit? How can one handle this change from a societal point of view? And how we react to these challenges as individuals? The contributions to this volume provide answers.

Rezension Besprochen in: saldo, 6 (2013) Insider, 7 (2013) www.lehrerbibliothek.de, 25.11.2013, Oliver Neumann.

Abstract: This book deals with a variety of socio-cultural, economic and political problems facing Cameroon and the rest of Africa, with particular reference to unemployment, corruption, poverty, criminality, violence, insecurity, and moral decadence. It presents a critical analysis of government policies from the colonial era to the present time; arguing that most of these policies have been stalled by an uncommitted leadership. The regime in Cameroon has drifted away from basic managerial and democratic principles in in favour of the ethnicisation of politics, sterile consumption, clientelism and patronage. The book contends that corruption has become the main instrument of governance whereby the political and economic elites control the wealth of the nation at the expense of a majority who wallow in abject poverty and misery. Faced with the difficult economic and political situation, most youth and the intelligentsia have adopted official and unofficial' means to circumvent all immigration rules to travel to affluent Western countries, the consequences notwithstanding. Brain drain is often the outcome. Further, it examines issues of social exclusion, political representation and marginalization with special focus on the predicament of Anglophone Cameroonians as a socio-cultural community. The inclusion of examples and case studies based on empirical and secondary data from Africa is intended to foreground the importance of comparison, and attract the interest of both academic and non-academic readership.

Abstract: This concise book on agile and Scrum offers an alternative methodology for project planning in the communication branch in which flexibility is embraced and formalized. Dynamics and change are no longer obstacles, but simply elements of the method. Scrum was invented by two organization scholars and further developed in the information technology industry. Today, it is applied in many disciplines, but scarcely at all in the field of communication. That is expected to change swiftly. Scrum is now being applied experimentally in communication and users are highly enthusiastic.

Abstract: This study raises awareness to the emergence of a new genre in world literatureóhybridized literature. It rejects the assumption according to which literatures written in less commonly taught languages should be subsumed into one universally accessible global idiom. Instead, Vakunta challenges literary scholars and readers of literature to regard untranslatability as the key to cross-cultural engagement. The bookís multiple approaches and innumerable sources generate complex interdisciplinary connections and provide an excellent introduction to a complex literary phenomenon alien to literati resident outside the officially bilingual multicultural and multilingual Republic of Cameroon.

Abstract: This edited volume explores transnational gestational surrogacy and how its practice is changing the traditional concept of parenthood across the globe. The phenomenon has given rise to a thriving international industry where money is being 'legally' exchanged for babies and 'reproductive labor' has taken on a lucrative commercial tone. This interdisciplinary collection of essays addresses significant issues in commercial gestational surrogacy as it plays out in a peculiar relation between the United States and India.

Abstract: In crisp and accessible language, TheEffects of Globalization in Latin America, Africa, and Asia challenges conventional wisdom that often provides one-sided views of globalization. The book brings to light that which many scholars ignore: the symbiotic linkages within a global supranational regime consisting of MNCs, WTO, the IMF/World Bank, western media technology, and the lone superpower that are the principal actors in the global political economy.

Abstract: Quick and easy access is the goal of the new 11th edition of The American Marketplace: Demographics and Spending Patterns. Designed for convenience, The American Marketplace draws on scores of government sources to give you a population profile of the United States in one handy volume. Its hundreds of tables are organized into 11 chapters covering attitudes, education, health, housing, income, labor force, living arrangements, population, spending, time use, and wealth. The American Marketplace reveals the latest demographic trends and tells the American story. It examines changing lifestyles in rich detail, from growing racial and ethnic diversity to declining homeownership, from disappearing nuclear families to recovery in household spending, from another baby bust to new attitudes toward gay marriage. New to this edition of The American Marketplace are 2012 population estimates for the nation, states, and metropolitan areas, revealing new patterns of growth. The Attitudes chapter has data from the 2012 General Social Survey. The Income chapter, with 2012 income statistics from the 2013 Current Population Survey, reveals the struggle to stay afloat. The American Marketplace is a reference tool that will help you cut through the clutter and track the trends.

Abstract: Die wichtigsten Publikationen der Kabarettistin, Vortragskünstlerin und Filmschauspielerin Resi Langer. In Alfred Richard Meyers Reihe »Lyrische Flugblätter«, in der u.a. Biographische Informationen Johanna Egger, geb. 1986, Literaturwissenschaftlerin, wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft am Seminar für Deutsche Philologie an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Jeanette Wiede, geb. 1963, Arbeit als Redakteurin, Drehbuchautorin und Regisseurin, studentische Hilfskraft am Seminar für Deutsche Philologie der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

Abstract: Islam in "Liberal" Europe provides the first comprehensive overview of the political and social status of Islam and of Muslim migrants in Europe. In addition to offering a critical assessment of positive and negative trends in Islamic-Western relations, Kai Hafez also engages in a theoretical debate revolving around integration, tolerance, multicultural liberalism, and modern liberal democracy. Assessing Islamophobia as it is manifested in politics, society, media, academia, school, and churches, the author debates the question of whether liberal society in Europe, in order to avoid a growing gap between integrative politics and discriminatory societies, needs a complete renewal not only of political ideologies but also of cultures and institutions.

Abstract: Consanguineous marriages have been practiced for hundreds of years, predominantly by Moslems. Although it is generally accepted among communities that the social advantages outweigh other, the rate of congenital malformations and genetic diseases among the offspring borne of consanguineous marriages is higher and an increase in sterility, rates of abortions, stillbirths and neonatal deaths has been suggested by some researchers. These problems result in a substantial economic burden within the communities involved in the practice. Strategies for reducing the frequency of consanguineous marriages include expansion of educational programs, promotion of genetic testing services, and research to identify the genes responsible for genetic defects. Nowadays, with the migration of large numbers of Moslems towards Western countries, consanguinity is becoming a practical issue in places where it was barely known, previously. This eBook serves as a guide for health care workers and counselors of the phenomenon and its associated problems. This eBook begins with an introduction of the topic from a social, legal and biological perspective. It then progresses to research about associated genetic disorders, reproductive and social awareness issues through the proceeding chapters. The eBook concludes with 2 chapters exploring strategies to counter the effects of consanguinity within the general population.

Abstract: The book explains inter-communal hostility and violence by analyzing extensive datasets that typify the condition of minorities worldwide. The analyses establish the deleterious causal impact of inter-group economic inequality on group relations against a background of institutional features that may promote or inhibit peaceful solutions.

Abstract: Gesundheit als soziales Produkt: Moderne prädiktive Brustkrebsgentests liefern heute gesundheitsrelevantes Wissen mit eindeutiger Familienanbindung.

Abstract: Tracking the evolution of digital technology is no easy task; changes happen so fast that keeping pace presents quite a challenge. This is, nevertheless, the aim of the Digital Enlightenment Yearbook. This book is the third in the series which began in 2012 under the auspices of the Digital Enlightenment Forum. This year, the focus is on the relationship of individuals with their networks, and explores "Social networks and social machines, surveillance and empowerment". In what is now the well-established tradition of the yearbook, different stakeholders in society and various disciplinary communities (technology, law, philosophy, sociology, economics, policymaking) bring their very different opinions and perspectives to bear on this topic. The book is divided into four parts: the individual as data manager; the individual, society and the market; big data and open data; and new approaches. These are bookended by a Prologue and an Epilogue, which provide illuminating perspectives on the discussions in between. The division of the book is not definitive; it suggests one narrative, but others are clearly possible. The 2014 Digital Enlightenment Yearbook gathers together the science, social science, law and politics of the digital environment in order to help us reformulate and address the timely and pressing questions which this new environment raises. We are all of us affected by digital technology, and the subjects covered here are consequently of importance to us all.
