Abstract: A timely and critical investigation into the way media operates in a so-called global age, presenting new empirical data on key sites of news production and crucially tying these findings to ongoing debates on globalization and democracy, Much analysis and hope in both academia and political rhetoric currently rests on ideas of deliberation and post-national democratic practices -- the roots of a 'global civil society'. This has taken force as not just an analysis of social and political change, but as a normative project. This book has grown out of concern with how changes in media are influencing democratic function and politics in our global age. Lina Dencik argues that counter to much discussion, the very notion of a global civil society needs to be subjected to rigorous critique, given so much of the debate is based on an implicit (and problematic) account of changing conditions, not least within the media. Bridging the gap between different literatures across disciplines and presenting new empirical data on key sites of news production, the book provides a fresh and critical approach to the topical debate on media, globalization and social and political change

Abstract: A sensitive and groundbreaking study of women, this examination of globalization in India provides a fascinating case study of its effects on female workers in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Originally published in 1982, the book is an important insight into a group dispossessed before the recent economic boom in India. It details the way in which women have been used to produce luxury goods for the Western market while they are not counted as workers or producers in their fragmented workplaces. Instead, these women are defined as nonworking housewives and their work as leisure activity. With rates of pay far below acceptable levels, pauperization is accelerated and their position in Indian society rapidly deteriorates. An invaluable analysis with implications on the global stage, the case of the lace makers continues to instruct on the real impact of industrial development.

Abstract: Offering a broad overview of what is being done in conflict-affected countries to advance women's participation in peace processes, peace building, and decision making, this record examines the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on "Women, Peace, and Security" and presents evidence-based case studies from East Timor, Fiji, and Sri Lanka. As it explores ways to protect women and girls from violence, it suggests key actions that should be taken by development agencies, women's nongovernmental organizations, and policymakers. The book focuses on the following fundamental aspects: a specifically feminist methodology, a priority on gender equality and women's empowerment, and the broad notions of human security and peace building.

Abstract: Vue explores and analyzes segmented assimilation on the ground using Hmong case studies of hip-hop and import racing. His work sheds light on how second generation children are positioning themselves within the U.S. racial order. Findings indicate that the color line, though blurred, is still very strong in the U.S. and structures how children of immigrants adjust to American life. Through their encounters with exclusion, racism, and even agents of social control, Hmong male participants engage in resistance and create identity by using their cultural "tool kits," including the popular practices of hip-hop and import racing.

Abstract: Written against the backdrop of the 2012 London Olympics, this book examines the idea of 'time' in sport, using time as a conceptual lens to explore movement, bodies, sports reporting, memory, disability, technology and the role of the past and the future in sport, Sport is all about time -the pressure of time, timing, 'extra time', but whilst records are kept and histories written, there is little engagement with what time is or how and why it matters so much in sport. Uniquely written in 'real time', against the backdrop of the 2012 London Olympics, this book examines the idea of 'time' in sport, using time as a conceptual lens to explore movement, bodies, memory, disability, gender, sports reporting, technology and the role of the past and the future in sport as well as more obvious aspects such as determining the length of a match and measuring and setting records. Written by one of the leading scholars in the field, during the London Olympics, this book advances time and temporality as key features of sport in order to contribute to wider debates about time and mobilities, proving that we all live in sporting times

Abstract: Fathers, Daughters, and Slaves brings to life the unique contribution by French women during the early nineteenth century, a key period in the history of colonialism and slavery. The book enriches our understanding of French and Atlantic history in the revolutionary and postrevolutionary years when Haiti was menaced with the re-establishment of slavery and when class, race, and gender identities were being renegotiated. It offers in-depth readings of works by Germaine de Staël, Claire de Duras, and Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. In addition to these now canonical French authors, it calls attention to the lives and works of two lesser-known but important figures-Charlotte Dard and Sophie Doin. Approaching these five women through the prism of paternal authority, Fathers, Daughters, and Slaves explores the empathy that daughters show toward blacks as well as their resistance against the oppression exercised by male colonists and other authority figures. The works by these French women antislavery writers bear significant similarities, which the book explores, with twentieth and twenty-first century Francophone texts. These women's contributions allow us to move beyond the traditional boundaries of exclusively male accounts by missionaries, explorers, functionaries, and military or political figures. They remind us of the imperative for ever-renewed gender research in the colonial archive and the need to expand conceptions of French women's writing in the nineteenth century as being a small minority corpus. Fathers, Daughters, and Slaves contributes to an understanding of colonial fiction, Caribbean writing, romanticism, and feminism. It undercuts neat distinctions between the cultures of France and its colonies and between nineteenth and twentieth-century Francophone writing.

Abstract: In recent years, European political leaders from Angela Merkel to David Cameron have discarded the term multiculturalism and now express scepticism, critique and even hostility towards multicultural ways of organising their societies. Yet they are unprepared to reverse the diversity existing in their states. These contradictory choices have different political consequences in the 11 European countries examined in this book: Belgium, Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden and Turkey. The future of European liberalism is being played out as multicultural notions of belonging, inclusion, tolerance and the national home are brought into question.

Abstract: Across history, the ideas and practices of male identity have varied much between time and place: masculinity proves to be a slippery concept, not available to all men, sometimes even applied to women. This book analyses the dynamics of 'masculinity' as both an ideology and lived experience - how men have tried, and failed, to be 'Real Men'

Abstract: Australia has often been said to possess a "larrikin streak," from the Stiffy and Mo cartoons and the true-blue Crocodile Hunter to the characters in the silent film The Sentimental Bloke. When it first emerged around 1870, larrikin was a term of abuse, used to describe teenage, working-class hell-raisers who populated dance halls and cheap theaters, and this account journeys through the street-based youth subculture known as larrikinism between 1870 and 1920, swerving through the streets of Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Offering a glimpse into the lives of Australia's first larrikins-and discussing bare-knuckle fighting, football-barracking, and knicker-flashing teenage girls-it charts the development of Australia's larrikinism and presents fascinating historical perspectives on current youth issues, including gang violence, racist riots, and raunchy culture among adolescent girls.

Abstract: This book analyzes the aims, activities and structures of cross border migrant organizations in four European countries of arrival and seven countries of origin, exploring different patterns of cross-border resource mobilization and coordination, Do cross-border migrant organizations challenge integration in countries of arrival? Are they a risk for national sovereignty or an opportunity for connecting migration and development in countries of origin? This book analyzes the aims, activities and structures of such organizations in four European countries of arrival (Germany, Poland, Spain and the UK) and seven countries of origin (Ecuador, India, Morocco, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam). Integrating organizational research and migration studies, the book examines different patterns of cross-border resource mobilization and coordination and explores the pressure they put nation states under and how they define new issues and actors that are often neglected or overlooked by states and national societies

Abstract: Die Wende von 1989 bzw.

Abstract: Between 1885 and 1960, laws and policies designed to repress prostitution dramatically shaped London's commercial sex industry. This book examines how laws translated into street-level reality, explores how women who sold sex experienced criminalization, and charts the complex dimensions of the underground sexual economy in the modern metropolis.
