Abstract: Seeking to better understand what it means to grow older in contemporary Britain from the perspective of older people themselves, this richly detailed ethnographic study engages in debates over selfhood and people's relationships with time. Based on research conducted in an English former coal mining village, the book focuses on the everyday experiences of older people living there. It explores how the category of old age comes to be assigned and experienced in daily life through multiple registers of interaction

Maher writes for all those interested in the dynamics of racism, from professionals in counselling, group analysis and psychotherapy working in multiracial and multicultural societies to those exposed to racism who need help in dealing with the impact of their experiences. She also addresses the concept of victims becoming perpetrators if support is not given to contain the process. Abstract: Law is often perceived as an instrument that can effect social change. While this might be so, it must be complemented by the necessary financial and human resources to make the law effective. Natalie Persadie explains that, among developing countries, such as Trinidad and Tobago, the achievement of legal advances for women-at either the international or national levels-is particularly difficult where practical measures are not subsequently implemented. This is, perhaps, attributable to a lack of political will. Important issues such as gender equality and domestic violence are not given priority and laws aimed at protecting women and promoting women's rights are ineffective, scant, or unenforced. Gender justice can only be realized through a multilevel approach from above and, more importantly, from below, as women have the potential to effect real national and international legal and institutional change to ensure gender equality at both levels

Abstract: In 2011, amid the popular uprising against Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, the government sought in vain to shut down the Internet-based social networks of its people. WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange has been branded "public enemy number one" by some in the United States for posting material on the World Wide Web that concerns airstrikes in Iraq, US diplomatic communications, and other sensitive matters. In Wiki at War, James Jay Carafano explains why these and other Internet-born initiatives matter and how they are likely to affect the future face of war, diplomacy, and domestic politics. "The war for winning dominance over social networks and using that dominance to advantage is already underway," Carafano writes in this extremely timely analysis of the techno-future of information and the impact of social networking via the Internet. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of history and defense strategy, Carafano creates a cogent analysis of what is truly new about the "new media," and what is simply a recasting of human warfare in contemporary forms. Wiki at War is written in a lively, accessible style that will make this technological development comprehensible and engaging for general readers without sacrificing the book's usefulness to specialists. Outlining the conditions under which a difference in degree becomes a difference in kind, detailing how ancient wisdom can still apply to national security decisions, and examining the conditions under which new expertise is required to wage effective diplomacy or successful military strategy, Carafano casts in stark relief the issues that face political, military, and social leaders in trying to manage and control information, in both the international and domestic arenas. Wiki at War affords stimulating thought about and definitive discussion of this vital emerging topic

Abstract: This volume documents the modern swimsuit's trajectory from men's underwear and circus/performance wear to its unique niche in world fashion. It emphasizes the relationship between fashion, media, celebrity, sport and the cultivation of the modern body. This fascinating book provides an historical, sociological and cultural context in which to view how the swimsuit - and Australia, the country that significantly influenced its modern form - migrated from the cultural and colonial periphery to the centre of international attention. In addition, the book offers new perspectives on national histories of the swimsuit and investigates how traditional European fashion centers have opened up to new markets and modes of living, bringing together influences from around the globe

Abstract: How did freed slaves reinvent themselves after the shackles of slavery had been lifted? How were they reintegrated into society, and what was their social position and status? What contributions did they make to the society that had once - sometimes brutally - repressed them? This collection builds on recent dynamic work on Roman freedmen, the contributors drawing upon a rich and varied body of evidence - visual, literary, epigraphic and archaeological - to elucidate the impact of freed slaves on Roman society and culture amid the shadow of their former servitude. Abstract: Reflexive Ethnography is a unique guide to ethnographic research for students of anthropology and related disciplines. It provides practical and comprehensive guidance to ethnographic research methods, but also encourages students to develop a critical understanding of the philosophical basis of ethnographic authority. Davies examines why reflexivity, at both personal and broader cultural levels, should be integrated into ethnographic research and discusses how this can be accomplished for a variety of research methods. This revised and updated second edition includes:〈U

Abstract: "If biotechnology can be used to upgrade' humans physically and mentally, should it be done? And if so, to what extent? How will biotechnology affect societal cohesion, and can the development be controlled? Or is this a Pandora's box that should remain closed? These are just a few of the many questions that arise as a result of the increasing ability of technology to change biology and, eventually, transform human living conditions. This development has created a new horizon of a posthuman future that will influence contemporary life and politics in a number of ways. The book gathers researchers within the fields of biotechnology, medicine, ethics, politics, and aesthetics. Among the contributors are Francis Fukuyama, Julian Savulescu, Maxwell Mehlman, Lone Frank and Chris Hables Gray."--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Anthropologists who are employed to change the worlds they are researching find themselves in a potentially contradictory position. Combining the various roles and expectations involved in working with Gypsies and local government at the same time as conducting anthropological research, provides the overall perspective of this study. It is an unusual and effective balance of insightful ethnography and anthropological theory with the perspective of someone employed to carry out applied work. An effective and creative use of metaphor structures the entire work and allows complex ideas to be con

Abstract: I had just witnessed women who shingled their own roofs, drove eighteen-wheeler trucks, and built their own houses, as well as kept them clean and cooked a damn good meal. On women's land I am a first-class citizen, I'm treated as an equal. I now see the world with righteous anger and hope. Living in womyn's community has provided that lens for me. Elizabeth Sturrus, third wave feminist, One of the driving forces in the lives of many lesbians is the search for community in a society that favors heterosexuality and often turns a cold shoulder toward women who love

Abstract: This book formulates new directions within the studies on cultural transfer and transmission, including gender aspects of cultural transfer, the importance of cultural transfer for minority literatures and approaches to writing a cultural transfer and transmission history. The articles collected in this volume demonstrate that the field of cultural transfer and transmission is developing quickly and offers a variety of research possibilities. New aspects are scrutinised and new insights gained from rediscovered material, and although the discussion of the theoretical points of departure and the methods used has only just begun, it is already providing us with interesting results and insights

Abstract: First published in 1952, Frantz Fanon's 'Black Skin, White Masks' is one of the most important anti-colonial works of the post-war period. It is both a profound critique of the conscious and unconcious ways in which colonialism brutalises the colonised and a passionate cry from deep within a black body alienated by the colonial system and in search of liberation from it.This volume is the first collection of essays specifically devoted to Fanon's text. Abstract: "The heightened security awareness in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the London and Madrid bombings has resulted in a 'crisis of multiculturalism'. Now is the time to look at the renewed challenges that multiculturalism faces today. Each chapter in this interdisciplinary book reviews the actual state of affairs in several countries in relation to the theories behind immigrant minority claims. With a special focus on Muslim immigrants, the contributors look at the value issues entrenched in multiculturalism and the policy challenges and measures adopted to address them."--Publisher's website

Abstract: Identifies nine core leadership principles common to Latino, African American, and American Indian cultures Incorporates these principles into a multicultural leadership model that is uniquely suited to our changing demographics Combines personal reflections, interviews with community leaders, historical background, and contemporary case examples One of America?s historic strengths has been our ability to incorporate aspects from many different cultures to create a stronger whole. Our music, literature, language, architecture, food, fashion, and more have all benefitted. But leadership approaches have remained distressingly Eurocentric. Juana Bordas set out to change this in the first edition of this influential book. She showed that incorporating Latino, African American, and American Indian approaches to leadership into the mainstream can strengthen leadership practices and better inspire today?s ethnically rich workforce. This message has only become more urgent. The 2010 census revealed that in four decades minorities will constitute over 50 percent of the population?and in one decade a majority of Americans under age eighteen will be nonwhite. More than ever we need a leadership model that resonates with our country?s growing diversity. Bordas incorporates this latest census data into this second edition, which now identifies nine?rather than the previous edition?s eight?core leadership principles common to all three cultures. The new principle deals with intergenerational leadership, of vital importance now that many organizations will have four generations working side by side. Using a lively blend of personal reflections, interviews with leaders from each community, historical background, and insightful analysis, Bordas illustrates the creative ways these principles have been put into practice in communities of color. The multicultural leadership model developed in this book offers a more flexible and inclusive way to lead and a new vision of the role of the leader in organizations and in our increasingly multicultural world. ?Study the nine beautifully illustrated and resourced principles in this book and you?ll find that they are both universal and timeless. Only by honoring and celebrating diversity can we synergistically produce unity, including peace and prosperity for all.? ?Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Abstract: Ever since quitting her job teaching pediatrics at Harvard Medical School in 1980, Helen Caldicott has worked tirelessly for a safe, sustainable, nuclear-free planet, most recently by hosting a weekly radio show featuring environmentalists and leading activists from around the globe. Together with some of the most brilliant thinkers and inspiring advocates of our time, Caldicott-whom Meryl Streep has called "my inspiration to speak out"-scrutinizes our unsustainable dependence on nuclear energy; explores how the United States could transition to renewable energy; and raises awareness about a host of other planetary issues, from deforestation and sea-level rise to nuclear arms and the potential health effects of cell phone radiation. Extending well beyond the scope of conventional environmental discussions, these stirring conversations give us Martin Sheen on grassroots movements and unionized labor; Chris Hedges on the costs of standing up for your morals; and award-winning actress Lily Tomlin on contemporary politics, in a sarcastic and witty exchange that is at once hilarious and inspiring. Loving This Planet offers an accessible overview of the chief environmental and social issues of our time and includes captivating interviews with twenty-five contributors, including Maude Barlow, Bill McKibben, Jonathan Schell, Daniel Ellsberg, and Bob Herbert, among others

Abstract: No longer passive spectators of images, these days we are more likely to be active participants in their production, distribution, and consumption - which raises important questions about the consequences of widespread user interaction on meaning, communicative effectiveness, and society at large. In this groundbreaking book, visual communication expert Audrey Grace Bennett argues that engendering interaction with images actually improves their effectiveness by enabling images to convey meanings effectively across cultures. At the cutting edge of the visual and communicative arts, this book represents a welcome challenge to the way we think about how images convey meaning

Not only has karaoke become a multimillion-dollar entertainment industry, its varied uses have also evolved into diverse popular cultural and social practices among many people around the world. Abstract: Marronnage is a stance, an attitude, a mentality or even a style. This book gives a large span of declensions of marronnage and shows how the quest for freedom during Slavery has infiltrated social relationships and the arts. Thus, identity approaches and expressions very specific to postcolonial societies and conditioned by the interracial and phenotypical-social interactions have developed. Those musics and dances are cosmogonies with their particular codes. New spheres where the enslaved

Abstract: Was kennzeichnet einen 'postmodernen Film'? Gibt es jenseits der postmodernen Beliebigkeit und etablierten Genre-Kategorien handfeste (Alleinstellungs-)Merkmale, die den 'postmodernen Film' prägen? Was unterscheidet ihn vom Hollywood-Kino und macht ihn so besonders?

Abstract: Music played a central role in the self-conception of many Germans between the 1848 Revolution and the First World War. Although German music was widely held to be 'universal' and thus apolitical, it participated in the historicist project of shaping the nation's future by calling on the national heritage. A wide variety of musical genres, ranging from pre- and post-Wagnerian opera to popular choruses to symphonic poems, provides for a new perspective on how national identities were constructed, shaped and celebrated in and through music

Abstract: Military doctrine of the People's Republic of China (PRC) envisages war being waged in five spheres: land, sea, air, outer space and cyberspace. The PRC believes that the early degradation, or destruction, of an enemy's command and control infrastructure will significantly improve its chances of ultimate victory. But the Chinese 21st century approach to cyberwarfare is both more sophisticated and comprehensive than that. This book examines the military background to today's doctrines, and explores how the teachings of Sun Tzu, the thirty-six principles from the warring states era and the hard-learnt lessons of Mao's long march infuse and support the modern state's approach to engaging with enemies and rivals. Chinese cyberwarriors, operating from behind the great firewall of China, have substantial campaign experience, and this book reviews operations from Titan Rain -- sustained multi-year cyberattacks against the US that started in 2003 -- to the most recent, ShadyRAT. This book also reviews the contributions made to the overall Chinese cyberstrategy by civilian hackers and state-owned enterprises and looks at how advanced persistent threats already undermine many of China's rival states and enterprises. China's rivals lack a coherent cyberstrategy of their own. They also do not understand the complex cultural, political and historical routes of the modern Chinese state and this is a significant weakness. This book helps everyone with an interest in cybersecurity to "know their enemy

Abstract: "2011 was a tumultuous year in terms of social protest movements. The Occupy movement spread across the globe with unprecedented support of an enormity not seen since 1968, while revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Syria and Libya caught the attention of the global media and brought the word "revolution" back into public discussions on social justice and governance. For many people worldwide, it appears that it is time for social, political and economic change. And it is precisely time, in all its forms, which cannot be ignored in this context. As something that surrounds us and affects every aspect of our lives, time is at once a tool for control, for order, for emancipation, for understanding the future and the past, and measuring degrees of freedom and quality of life in the present. This book brings together essays from fields such as politics, cultural studies and philosophy in order to reinterpret and reorient current thinking on the possibilities for new understandings of concepts of time to bring about social change. History as the passing of time, clock time, the exchange value of time, qualitative time, and alternative or marginal notions of temporality are analysed through the lens of various theoretical thinkers and applied to a multitude of political and social case studies. Breaking away from traditional notions of time as linear, and against common socially-constructed understandings of time, these essays suggest that new conceptions of time can have a major influence on creating a more just, tolerant world."--Book description

Abstract: We find Roma settlements on the outskirts of villages, separated from the majority population by roads, railways or other barriers, disconnected from water pipelines and sewage treatment. Why are some people (or groups) better off than others when it comes to the distribution of environmental benefits? In order to understand the present situation and identify ways to address the impacts of these inequalities we must understand the past and mechanisms related to the differentiated treatment. The situation and discrimination of the Roma ethnic minority in Slovakia is examined from the perspective of environmental conditions and injustice. There is no simple answer as to why there is environmental injustice. Environmental conditions in Roma settlements are just one of the indicators of failures of policies addressing the problem of poverty and social exclusion in marginalized groups, structural discrimination, and internal Roma problems. Environmental injustice is not an outcome of the "historical determination" of the Roma population to live in environmentally problematic places

Abstract: "Despite the vibrant, complex, and ubiquitous nature of popular entertainments, the field has suffered from a lack of sustained academic attention. Nevertheless, popular entertainments have a global reach and a transnational significance at odds with the fact that the meaning and definition of both 'popular' and 'entertainment' remain widely contested. Since the late-nineteenth century, class-based prejudices in Western culture have championed the superiority of art and literature over the dubious and fleeting pleasures of 'entertainment.' Similarly, the term 'popular' has carried pejorative connotations, indicating something common and outside the conventional and highbrow productions of the purpose-built theatre house or concert hall"--Publisher

Abstract: Neighbors and Neighborhoods: Living Together in the German-Speaking World is a bilingual collection of nine essays on culture, film, language, literature, and theory. The essays in this collection address questions of community and cohesion in the modern German-speaking world, a complex sociolinguistic community that is no longer defined by territorial boundaries but that remains, in many respects, a neighborhood. Abstract: "The eleven-year civil war in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002 was incomprehensibly brutal--it is estimated that half of all female refugees were raped and many thousands were killed. While the publicity surrounding sexual violence helped to create a general picture of women and girls as victims of the conflict, there has been little effort to understand female soldiers' involvement in, and experience of, the conflict. Female Soldiers in Sierra Leone draws on interviews with 75 former female soldiers and over 20 local experts, providing a rare perspective on both the civil war and post-conflict development efforts in the country. Megan MacKenzie argues that post-conflict reconstruction is a highly gendered process, demonstrating that a clear recognition and understanding of the roles and experiences of female soldiers are central to both understanding the conflict and to crafting effective policy for the future"--Publisher's website

The essays in this collection explore the relative influence of academic and fan perspectives in the current group of scholar-fans and the ethical dilemmas that sometimes emerge from this interplay of identities, the impact of the increasingly reciprocal relationship between textual producers and consumers, and gender difference

Abstract: 〈Div〉This book examines how language ideologies are manifested in newspaper media. Using the Spanish press as a case study it considers how media discourse both from and about the Real Academia Española constitutes a set of 'language ideological debates' in which the institution represents a vision of what the Spanish language is and what it should be like. 〈br /〉〈/div〉〈br/〉〈div〉Paffey adopts a Critical Discourse Analysis approach to a large corpus of texts from Spain's best-selling daily newspapers, El País and ABC . More generally, the book sheds light on how institutions produce and maintain visions of 'standard language' in the contemporary context. A global language, such as Spanish, is by nature more widely used outside of the nation state in question than in it. 〈/div〉〈br/〉〈div〉 〈/div〉〈br/〉〈div〉The book covers recent research on language ideologies, standardization and CDA and considers the application of these to three core discursive themes: language unity and a concept of a 'panhispanic' speech community; the RAE's construction of its authority; and institutional ideologies and management of language on a global scale. 〈/div〉

Abstract: While the Western world adheres to a beauty ideal that says women can never be too thin, the semi-nomadic Moors of the Sahara desert have for centuries cherished a feminine ideal of extreme fatness. Voluptuous immobility is thought to beautify girls' bodies, hasten the onset of puberty, heighten their sexuality and ripen them for marriage. From the time of the loss of their first milk teeth, girls are directed to eat huge bowls of milk and porridge in one of the world's few examples of active female fattening. Based on fieldwork in an Arab village in Niger, Feeding Desire analyses the meaning

Abstract: Manhood and American Political Culture in the Cold War explores the meaning of anxiety as expressed through the political and cultural language of the early cold war era. Cuordileone shows how the preoccupation with the soft, malleable American character reflected not only anti-Communism but acute anxieties about manhood and sexuality. Reading major figures like Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Adlai Stevenson, Joseph McCarthy, Norman Mailer, JFK, and many lesser known public figures, Cuordileone reveals how the era's cult of toughness shaped the political dynamics of the time and inspired a reinventio

Abstract: The events of 9/11 had a profound impact on American society, but they had an even more lasting effect on Muslims living in the United States. Once practically invisible, they suddenly found themselves overexposed. By describing how Islam in America began as a strange cultural object and is gradually sinking into familiarity, Finding Mecca in America illuminates the growing relationship between Islam and American culture as Muslims find a homeland in America. Rich in ethnographic detail, the book is an up-close account of how Islam takes its American shape

Abstract: During the 1970s a wave of "counter-culture" people moved into rural communities in many parts of Australia. This study focuses in particular on the town of Kuranda in North Queensland and the relationship between the settlers and the local Aboriginal population, concentrating on a number of linked social dramas that portrayed the use of both public and private space. Through their public performances and in their everyday spatial encounters, these people resisted the bureaucratic state but, in the process, they also contributed to the cultivation and propagation of state effects
