Abstract: The fairy tale is arguably one of the most important cultural and social influences on children's lives. But until the first publication of Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion, little attention had been paid to the ways in which the writers and collectors of tales used traditional forms and genres in order to shape children's lives - their behavior, values, and relationship to society. As Jack Zipes convincingly shows in this classic work, fairy tales have always been a powerful discourse, capable of being used to shape or destabilize attitudes and behavior within culture. How and why did ce

Professor Mishan is one of the few economists absorbed by the larger social questions, and does not believe that the growth in state intervention and the decline of social liberty are simply the result of intellectual confusion and bureaucratic momentum. In opposition to this, the author seeks to assert an active voice style of thinking about the relations between individuals and their cultural environment, whether in economics, history or literary criticism. This collection is assembled with the guiding principle that all the essays touch upon the borderland between economic values and personal judgements of quality. The significance of video games within our everyday lives has certainly been increased and shaped by new technologies and gaming patterns, including the rise of home-based games consoles, advances in mobile telephone technology, the rise in more 'sociable' forms of gaming, and of course the advent of the Internet. Abstract: One of the most talked-about scholarly works of the past fifty years, Judith Butler's Gender Trouble is as celebrated as it is controversial.Arguing that traditional feminism is wrong to look to a natural, 'essential' notion of the female, or indeed of sex or gender, Butler starts by questioning the category 'woman' and continues in this vein with examinations of 'the masculine' and 'the feminine'. Best known however, but also most often misinterpreted, is Butler's concept of gender as a reiterated social performance rather than the expression of a prior reality.〈/P

Abstract: This book is a crash course in the fundamental theory, concepts, and terminology of switching power supplies. It is designed to quickly prepare engineers to make key decisions about power supplies for their projects. Intended for readers who need to quickly understand the key points of switching power supplies, this book covers the 20% of the topic that engineers use, 80% of the time. Unlike existing switching power supply books that deal strictly with design issues, this book also recognizes the growing importance of "off-the-shelf" commercial switching power supplies, giving readers the background necessary to select the right commercial supply. This book covers the core essentials of power supply theory and design while keeping mathematics to the absolute minimum necessary. Special attention is given to the selection of appropriate components, such as inductors and transformers, to ensure safe and reliable operation. Engineers, whose main design responsibilities are in other areas, will better understand the strengths and weaknesses of switching power supplies and whether such supplies are appropriate for their projects. They will be able to give more meaningful design requirements and specifications to those who design switching power supplies. * Discusses both AC line supplies and DC-DC inverters. * Covers the main switching power supply designs, including flyback, forward conversion, bridge, buch, boost, and boost/buck topologies. * Design examples include a 220 volt offline switching power supply and a 110 volt uninterruptible supply.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication will help you to better understand the effective use of the WebSphere® DataPower® family of appliances. It provides guidance on the best methods identified to date for building the various components that implement solutions, such as handling MQ-based message flows or creating authentication and authorization policies. The information and recommendations in this publication are the result of real world experiences using the appliances. Such experience shows that taking the time to plan a solution implementation before beginning the work yields the greatest savings in time and energy and the highest quality outcome. This publication begins with a checklist of items to consider when planning a DataPower solution. This publication is intended to provide answers or guidance to implementation problems often encountered by users of the appliance. This book is not intended to present complete solutions or templates because experience shows that every customer uses the appliance in their own unique environment with unique requirements. Thus, this publication provides a compendium of information about particular aspects of a solution. Use the Table of Contents or Index to find your current issue, and return to this publication when the next issue or question arises. Abstract: Most business readers have heard of the Lean principles developed for factories—a set of tools and ideas that have enabled companies to dramatically boost quality by reducing waste and errors—producing more while using less. Yet until now, few have recognized how relevant these powerful ideas are to individuals and their daily work. Every person at a desk, drafting table, workstation, or operating table must (like a factory) deal with the challenge of reducing the waste that creeps into their work. The same Lean principles that have improved efficiencies on the factory floor can be just as powerful—in fact, far more so—in helping individuals boost personal performance. Winner of a 2013 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award! A Factory of One: Applying Lean Principles to Banish Waste and Improve Your Personal Performance describes how you can foster a new mindset and improve your performance by applying Lean methods to your work. It translates powerful Lean tools such as visual management, flow, pull, 5S, and kaizen to your daily work, revealing how they can help to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and link you ever more closely to customer value. This practice will help you develop better self-awareness, more disciplined problem-solving skills, and the ability to self-correct errors. This book not only provides the tools, but also teaches you how to find the root causes underlying your inefficiencies so you can eliminate them permanently. It will enable you to immediately improve personal productivity while developing the skills needed for continuous improvement. It includes real-world examples that illustrate how these principles have been successfully applied across a range of industries. Providing the perfect mix of what-to-do with why-to-do it, the text details a step-by-step approach to applying Lean principles to your work. Abstract: IBM® DB2® 9 and 10 for z/OS® have added functions in the areas of security, regulatory compliance, and audit capability that provide solutions for the most compelling requirements. DB2 10 enhances the DB2 9 role-based security with additional administrative and other finer-grained authorities and privileges. This authority granularity helps separate administration and data access that provide only the minimum appropriate authority. The authority profiles provide better separation of duties while limiting or eliminating blanket authority over all aspects of a table and its data. In addition, DB2 10 provides a set of criteria for auditing for the possible abuse and overlapping of authorities within a system. In DB2 10, improvements to security and regulatory compliance focus on data retention and protecting sensitive data from privileged users and administrators. Improvements also help to separate security administration from database administration. DB2 10 also lets administrators enable security on a particular column or particular row in the database complementing the privilege model. This IBM Redbooks® publication provides a detailed description of DB2 10 security functions from the implementation and usage point of view. It is intended to be used by database, audit, and security administrators.

Abstract: First developed in the early 1980s by Lenstra, Lenstra, and Lovász, the LLL algorithm was originally used to provide a polynomial-time algorithm for factoring polynomials with rational coefficients. It very quickly became an essential tool in integer linear programming problems and was later adapted for use in cryptanalysis. This book provides an introduction to the theory and applications of lattice basis reduction and the LLL algorithm. With numerous examples and suggested exercises, the text discusses various applications of lattice basis reduction to cryptography, number theory, polynomial factorization, and matrix canonical forms.

Abstract: Despite all the controversy and hype that climate change has generated, there now exists an overwhelming body of scientific evidence that the problem is real and that its effects are already being felt on a global scale. Part of what makes this a volatile and controversial issue is that it is not just confined to the realms of the scientific community, nor does it have just one simple, predefined solution—it has multifaceted dimensions involving economic, sociological, political, psychological, and personal issues, making this a topic that affects every person on earth now and in the future. Connecting the dots, Climate Management Issues: Economics, Sociology, and Politics is the first book to propose a truly comprehensive solution to effectively deal with climate change in both the short and long term. It reaches across diverse sectors of society to link issues in climate change management and offer new insights into the complex interrelationships. As the author emphasizes, climate change extends far beyond the physical sciences to affect lifestyles, cultural values, political systems, economics, and health. An overview of the physical science of climate change gives readers a firm understanding of the concepts they need for policy and decision making, sociological applications, and community leadership. The book then focuses on multifaceted aspects such as international cooperation, journalistic balance, human psychology, international policy, national security, socioeconomic impacts, agricultural conservation, healthcare, the economics of mitigation, climate modeling, and error amplification. This timely volume puts on center stage those crucial ideas that are usually overlooked, misunderstood, or lost in media sensationalism. Enlightening and empowering readers, it looks at the decisions that must be made to mitigate climate change problems before irreversible damage is done.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication is a detailed technical guide to the IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Version 6.1.0. SAN Volume Controller is a virtualization appliance solution which maps virtualized volumes that are visible to hosts and applications to physical volumes on storage devices. Each server within the storage area network (SAN) has its own set of virtual storage addresses that are mapped to physical addresses. If the physical addresses change, the server continues running using the same virtual addresses that it had before. Therefore, volumes or storage can be added or moved while the server is still running. The IBM virtualization technology improves the management of information at the “block” level in a network, thus enabling applications and servers to share storage devices on a network. This book is intended for readers who need to implement the SVC at a 6.1.0 release level with a minimum of effort.

Abstract: Members of AVIEN (the Anti-Virus Information Exchange Network) have been setting agendas in malware management for several years: they led the way on generic filtering at the gateway, and in the sharing of information about new threats at a speed that even anti-virus companies were hard-pressed to match. AVIEN members represent the best-protected large organizations in the world, and millions of users. When they talk, security vendors listen: so should you. AVIEN’s sister organization AVIEWS is an invaluable meeting ground between the security vendors and researchers who know most about malicious code and anti-malware technology, and the top security administrators of AVIEN who use those technologies in real life. This new book uniquely combines the knowledge of these two groups of experts. Anyone who is responsible for the security of business information systems should be aware of this major addition to security literature. * “Customer Power takes up the theme of the sometimes stormy relationship between the antivirus industry and its customers, and tries to dispel some common myths. It then considers the roles of the independent researcher, the vendor-employed specialist, and the corporate security specialist. * “Stalkers on Your Desktop considers the thorny issue of malware nomenclature and then takes a brief historical look at how we got here, before expanding on some of the malware-related problems we face today. * “A Tangled Web discusses threats and countermeasures in the context of the World Wide Web. * “Big Bad Bots tackles bots and botnets, arguably Public Cyber-Enemy Number One. * “Crème de la CyberCrime takes readers into the underworld of old-school virus writing, criminal business models, and predicting future malware hotspots. * “Defense in Depth takes a broad look at DiD in the enterprise, and looks at some specific tools and technologies. * “Perilous Outsorcery offers sound advice on how to avoid the perils and pitfalls of outsourcing, incorporating a few horrible examples of how not to do it. * “Education in Education offers some insights into user education from an educationalist’s perspective, and looks at various aspects of security in schools and other educational establishments. * “DIY Malware Analysis is a hands-on, hands-dirty approach to security management, considering malware analysis and forensics techniques and tools. * “Antivirus Evaluation & Testing continues the D-I-Y theme, discussing at length some...

Abstract: Nearly all industrial processes require objects to be moved, manipulated or subjected to some sort of force. Such movements and manipulations are frequently accomplished by means of devices driven by liquids (hydraulics) or air (pneumatics), the subject of this book. Hydraulics and Pneumatics is written by a practicing process control engineer as a guide to the successful operation of hydraulic and pneumatic systems for all engineers and technicians working with them. Keeping mathematics and theory to a minimum, this practical guide is thorough but accessible to technicians without an advanced engineering background, and offers clear, complete coverage of the latest pumps, valves and other hydraulic and pneumatic equipment Designed to serve as an introduction to those who are training and a day-to-day reference for use on the job, the book also offers an essential section on industrial safety and compliance with regulation. Covers both hydraulic and pneumatic machinery, with a practical, practitioner-led approach that does not demand great theoretical and mathematical understanding. Thorough and updated coverage of safety standards, helping control engineers and shop floor managers to ensure their operations are in compliance with regulations. More abundant referencing, new and updated web-links, look-up tables and graphical keys offer even easier referencing while providing quick access to other related materials.

Abstract: What does it take to get and keep the job you want? Ninety-six percent of employers argue that it's not just about having the right skills for the position-it's all about the right mindset. As two leading experts on the subject, Reed and Stoltz know what employers really want from the people they hire and keep. According to their extensive and globally acclaimed research, there is a specific set of mental traits that will make you exponentially more desirable to potential employers, and more likely to succeed and enjoy your job once you're hired. This "3G Mindset" is: -Global: the openness and big-picture perspective to compete on a global scale in any job -Good: a positive force with an unwavering moral compass -Grit: the tenacity and resilience to thrive on adversity The authors reveal why employers are three times more likely to hire people with the right mindset over those who are more qualified on paper. Put Your Mindset to Work provides an actionable approach for both assessing and developing these essential traits.

Abstract: Gene Kranz was present at the creation of America's manned space program and was a key player in it for three decades. As a flight director in NASA's Mission Control, Kranz witnessed firsthand the making of history. He participated in the space program from the early days of the Mercury program to the last Apollo mission, and beyond. He endured the disastrous first years when rockets blew up and the United States seemed to fall further behind the Soviet Union in the space race. He helped to launch Alan Shepard and John Glenn, then assumed the flight director's role in the Gemini program, which he guided to fruition. With his teammates, he accepted the challenge to carry out President John F. Kennedy's commitment to land a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s. Kranz was flight director for both Apollo 11, the mission in which Neil Armstrong fulfilled President Kennedy's pledge, and Apollo 13. He headed the Tiger Team that had to figure out how to bring the three Apollo 13 astronauts safely back to Earth. (In the film Apollo 13, Kranz was played by the actor Ed Harris, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance.) In Failure Is Not an Option, Gene Kranz recounts these thrilling historic events and offers new information about the famous flights. What appeared as nearly flawless missions to the moon were, in fact, a series of hair-raising near misses. When the space technology failed, as it sometimes did, the controllers' only recourse was to rely on their skills and those of their teammates. Kranz takes us inside Mission Control and introduces us to some of the whiz kids-still in their twenties, only a few years out of college-who had to figure it all out as they went along, creating a great and daring enterprise. He reveals behind-the-scenes details to demonstrate the leadership, discipline, trust, and teamwork that made the space program a success. Finally, Kranz reflects on what has happened to the space program and offers his own bold suggestions about what we ought to be doing in space now. This is a fascinating firsthand account written by a veteran mission controller of one of America's greatest achievements.

Abstract: In an embedded system, firmware is the software that directly interfaces with the microcontroller, controlling the system’s function. The major forces driving the embedded firmware development process today are reduced development times, increased complexity, and the need to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. These forces translate into strenuous design requirements for embedded engineers and programmers. Many low-level embedded microcontroller designs have insufficient memory and/or architectural limitations that make the use of a real-time operating system impractical. The techniques presented in this book allow the design of robust multitasking firmware through the use of interleaved state machines. This book presents a complete overview of multitasking terminology and basic concepts. Practical criteria for task selection and state machine design are also discussed. Designing multitasking firmware is arduous, complex and fraught with potential for errors, and there is no one, “standard way to do it. This book will present a complete and well-organized design approach with examples and sample source code that designers can follow. Covers every aspect of design from the system level to the component level, including system timing, communicating with the hardware, integration and testing.

Abstract: China continues to be a country full of mystery for the western world, despite the fact that hundreds of studies and analysis are published on a yearly basis which are intended to explain the mechanisms that move its economy, political structure and even its geographical features. Nevertheless, and even with the huge interest that exists in this Asian giant, there are very few books that provide a micro-level account of what is happening in this country today. China’s New Leaders is therefore an exception, a much needed breath of fresh air that takes a look at the economic situation of this country from the point of view of its women entrepreneurs. Julia Pérez-Cerezo emerges herself in the daily life of these women and recounts their story from an Asian point of view, by allowing them to do the talking without applying any Western filters and avoiding, as far as possible, any interpretation of the events. In this way the reader is permitted to extract the vital life lessons from each account and come to their own conclusions.

Abstract: Over 25 unique effects illustrated with process photos, finished examples, and variations. Mixed Emulsions is a follow up to Karen Michel's book, The Complete Guide to Altered Imagery . Mixed Emulsions: Altered Art Techniques for Photographic Imagery takes a slightly different tact, bringing traditional and digital photography front and center, showing the many ways that photographic imagery can be manipulated, not electronically, but using various art materials and techniques. The chapters explore ways to add color (paints, oil sticks, watercolors, inks), ways to add texture (embossing powders, gessos, pastes, wax), and special effects (printing on unusual substrates, imprinting, photo mosaics, using tissue, fabric, cardboard). Altered art continues to grow as an area of interest for many kinds of crafters. A great technique book for artists looking to expand the creative possibilities for altered photography A gallery of artwork by other well-known artists offers further inspiration

Abstract: An entertaining illumination of the stupid beliefs that make us feel wise. You believe you are a rational, logical being who sees the world as it really is, but journalist David McRaney is here to tell you that you're as deluded as the rest of us. But that's OK- delusions keep us sane. You Are Not So Smart is a celebration of self-delusion. It's like a psychology class, with all the boring parts taken out, and with no homework. Based on the popular blog of the same name, You Are Not So Smart collects more than 46 of the lies we tell ourselves everyday, including: * Dunbar's Number - Humans evolved to live in bands of roughly 150 individuals, the brain cannot handle more than that number. If you have more than 150 Facebook friends, they are surely not all real friends. * Hindsight bias - When we learn something new, we reassure ourselves that we knew it all along. * Confirmation bias - Our brains resist new ideas, instead paying attention only to findings that reinforce our preconceived notions. * Brand loyalty - We reach for the same brand not because we trust its quality but because we want to reassure ourselves that we made a smart choice the last time we bought it.

Abstract: We live in a new world where work and life are blended as opposed to balanced, and feelings of financial security and entitlement are a thing of the past. Job satisfaction is at a record low, a crisis with far-reaching impact. For businesses, a disengaged workforce means lower levels of productivity and service, and ultimately lower growth and profits. For individuals, our emotions at work spill over to the other areas of our lives and take a toll on our health and relationships. In We, Rudy Karsan and Kevin Kruse dig deep to reveal the nature of work in the modern organization and share the secrets for achieving full engagement at work, based on findings from over ten million worker surveys in 150 countries and also on their own experiences leading fast-growth companies. They show the inevitable linkage between the success of the individual and the success of the organization, and how both must come together to succeed. For managers and all professionals, We details the leadership behaviors that generate emotional buy-in and commitment from team members. Karsan and Kruse highlight the three factors that drive one's level of engagement the most: -Growth: Team members feel they are growing in their careers and learning new things. -Recognition: Team members feel that their ideas and accomplishments are appreciated. -Trust: Team members trust senior leadership and feel confident about the future. We is an indispensable guide packed with solid research, case studies from innovative companies, individual stories of personal growth and achievement, and actionable steps that will both enhance your own engagement at work and transform your approach to leadership.

Abstract: How did Alan Mulally-an outsider to the auto industry-lead such a spectacular turnaround at Ford? How did Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack keep his company from imploding even as Lehman Brothers collapsed? What is it that enables such extraordinary leaders to galvanize their talents and energy, as well as the talents and energy of those who work for them, to achieve superior performance no matter what challenges they face? Rajeev Peshawaria has spent more than twenty years working alongside top executives at Fortune 500 companies and training them in leadership. He knows precisely what makes the difference between those who are simply bosses and those who are superior leaders, and between those who continue to rise to the top levels and those who get stuck along the way. In this lively and remarkably empowering book, Peshawaria offers readers the opportunity to experience the highest level of leadership training available in the world. Introducing the three core principles he has observed are the foundation of the best leadership-that great leaders clearly define their purpose and values; that nobody can motivate another person because everyone comes premotivated; and that a leader's job is not to directly produce results but to create the conditions that will harness the energy of others-he details his unique and proven program for achieving leadership excellence. Sharing a wealth of illuminating stories, from those of Mulally's achievement at Ford and Mack's at Morgan Stanley, to how Harvey Golub and Ken Chenault successfully restored American Express to long-term sustainable growth, how Neville Isdell turned the Coca-Cola company around, and the continuing prowess of Jeff Bezos in growing Amazon.com, he first reveals how extraordinary leaders marshal and sustain the level of energy in themselves that is required and how they enlist a core group of proficient co-leaders. He then outlines how to harness the energy and talents of those at all levels of an organization, igniting their motivation by following his guidelines for addressing their core needs. Finally, he introduces his unique Brains, Bones, and Nerves framework for developing a clear strategy for competitive advantage (the Brains); crafting an optimal organizational structure (the Bones); and fostering a highly cooperative and motivated company culture (the Nerves). Filled with specific tips about the vital questions to ask and simple but powerful steps to follow, Too Many Bosses, Too ...

Abstract: P. M. Forni, founder of the Civility Initiative at Johns Hopkins, is America's civility expert. In his first two books, Choosing Civility and The Civility Solution, he taught people the rules of civil behavior and ways of responding to rudeness. Now, in The Thinking Life, he looks at the importance of thinking in our lives: how we do it, why we don't do enough of it, and why we need to do more of it. In twelve short chapters, he gives listeners a remedy for the Age of Distraction, an age fueled by the internet, Blackberries, and cellphones, all of which make constant demands on our attention, diverting it from one thing to another. After suggesting ways we can find time to think more, Forni shows us how we can improve our abilities of:AttentionReflectionIntrospectionSelf-controlPositive thinkingProactive thinkingEffective decision-making strategiesCreative thinkingProblem-solving strategiesJust as he did with civility, he puts the importance of good thinking front and center in a book as simple and as profound as his earlier works.

Abstract: It's time to stop just worrying about climate change, says Paul Gilding. We need instead to brace for impact because global crisis is no longer avoidable. This Great Disruption started in 2008, with spiking food and oil prices and dramatic ecological changes, such as the melting ice caps. It is not simply about fossil fuels and carbon footprints. We have come to the end of Economic Growth, Version 1.0, a world economy based on consumption and waste, where we lived beyond the means of our planet's ecosystems and sources. The Great Disruption offers a stark and unflinching look at the challenge humanity faces-yet also a deeply optimistic message. The coming decades will see loss, suffering, and conflict as our planetary overdraft is paid; however, they will also bring out the best humanity can offer: compassion, innovation, resilience, and adaptability. Gilding tells us how to fight-and in-what he calls the One Degree War to prevent catastrophic warming of the earth, and how to start today. The crisis represents a rare chance to replace our addiction to growth with an ethic of sustainability, and it's already happening. It's also an unmatched business opportunity: Old industries will collapse while new companies will literally reshape our economy. In the aftermath of the Great Disruption, we will measure "growth" in a new way. It will mean not quantity of stuff but quality and happiness of life. Yes, there is life after shopping.

Abstract: We used to make things in this country. We were the dazzling innovators, the undisputed world economic leaders, and with our manufacturing engine driving the process, we built a solid, high-achieving middle class and a thriving economy. Now, thanks to policies that are either indifferent-or downright hostile-to manufacturing, we're at the brink of losing it all. If you think this won't affect you, guess again. In Make It in America: The Case for Re-Inventing the Economy, author Andrew N. Liveris presents a powerful case for the critical importance of domestic manufacturing to the long-term health of the entire U.S. economy and issues a candid wake-up call to America to reinvent its manufacturing base before it's too late. If anyone has street cred on this subject, it's Liveris. Currently chairman and CEO of the Dow Chemical Company, one of the world's largest manufacturers and of the most global corporations, he's been on the global manufacturing stage for over thirty years. In this thought-provoking book, Liveris challenges conventional wisdom and, using vivid examples from around the globe, makes clear: -Manufacturing matters-more than ever before. Not all sectors are created equal. Manufacturing can create jobs and wealth to a degree that the service sector can't match. -The Rust Belt, it turns out, isn't so rusty. Twenty-first-century manufacturing means solar cells for your home, batteries for your hybrid car, the touch screen on your smart phone, and the e-ink in your Kindle. -Government's got to get engaged. Liveris argues it's a false choice to claim that you must be either pro-business or pro-government. Globalization has changed the equation, and governments all over the world are working in partnership with-and taking action on behalf of-their leading industries. Why isn't America? Liveris sees where America is losing ground-from innovation to job creation-and explains how we can take back our future. Make It in America is a must-listen for anyone who believes that America's greatest, most productive, most prosperous days are not behind us. Our best days lie ahead of us if we take proactive measures now. They're still within reach.

Abstract: What do Apple CEO Steve Jobs, comedian Chris Rock, prizewinning architect Frank Gehry, the story developers at Pixar films, and the Army Chief of Strategic Plans all have in common? Bestselling author Peter Sims found that all of them have achieved breakthrough results by methodically taking small, experimental steps in order to discover and develop new ideas. Rather than believing they have to start with a big idea or plan a whole project out in advance, trying to foresee the final outcome, they make a series of little bets about what might be a good direction, learning from lots of little failures and from small but highly significant wins that allow them to happen upon unexpected avenues and arrive at extraordinary outcomes. Based on deep and extensive research, including more than two hundred interviews with leading innovators, Sims discovered that productive, creative thinkers and doers-from Ludwig van Beethoven to Thomas Edison and Amazon's Jeff Bezos-practice a key set of simple but ingenious experimental methods, such as failing quickly to learn fast, tapping into the genius of play, and engaging in highly immersed observation, that free their minds, opening them up to making unexpected connections and perceiving invaluable insights. These methods also unshackle them from the constraints of overly analytical thinking and linear problem solving that our education places so much emphasis on, as well as from the fear of failure, all of which thwart so many of us in trying to be more innovative. Reporting on a fascinating range of research, from the psychology of creative blocks to the influential Silicon Valley-based field of design thinking, Sims offers engaging and wonderfully illuminating accounts of breakthrough innovators at work, including how Hewlett-Packard stumbled onto the breakaway success of the first hand-held calculator; the remarkable storyboarding process at Pixar films that has been the key to their unbroken streak of box office successes; the playful discovery process by which Frank Gehry arrived at his critically acclaimed design for Disney Hall; the "aha" revelation that led Amazon to pursue its wildly successful affiliates program; and the U.S. Army's ingenious approach to counterinsurgency operations that led to the dramatic turnaround in Iraq. Abstract: Consider Facebook-it's human contact, only easier to engage with and easier to avoid. Developing technology promises closeness. Sometimes it delivers, but much of our modern life leaves us less connected with people and more connected to simulations of them. In Alone Together, MIT technology and society professor Sherry Turkle explores the power of our new tools and toys to dramatically alter our social lives. It's a nuanced exploration of what we are looking for-and sacrificing-in a world of electronic companions and social networking tools, and an argument that, despite the hand-waving of today's self-described prophets of the future, it will be the next generation who will chart the path between isolation and connectivity.

Abstract: A majority of people now have a digital mobile device whether it be a cell phone, laptop, or blackberry. Now that we have the mobility we want it to be more versatile and dependable; RF power amplifiers accomplish just that. These amplifiers take a small input and make it stronger and larger creating a wider area of use with a more robust signal. Switching mode RF amplifiers have been theoretically possible for decades, but were largely impractical because they distort analog signals until they are unrecognizable. However, distortion is not an issue with digital signals—like those used by WLANs and digital cell phones—and switching mode RF amplifiers have become a hot area of RF/wireless design. This book explores both the theory behind switching mode RF amplifiers and design techniques for them. *Provides essential design and implementation techniques for use in cma2000, WiMAX, and other digital mobile standards *Both authors have written several articles on the topic and are well known in the industry *Includes specific design equations to greatly simplify the design of switchmode amplifiers

Abstract: Knowing how to influence others is crucial to your success. It's found in the simplest interactions with your customers, suppliers, partners, bosses, subordinates, and colleagues, as well as your friends and loved ones. The act of influencing is such a part of your daily life that you may not even realize when you (or others) are doing it. But to use influence effectively-to inspire and convince others to follow your lead, share your point of view, or buy your products and services-requires adaptability, perceptiveness, and some insight into other people and cultures. Based on 20 years of research, Elements of Influence reveals how you can: understand why people allow themselves to be influenced -and why they resist • choose the right approach for each situation • be influential when you have no formal authority • avoid or handle skepticism, resistance, and rebellion • gauge how responsive someone might be to an influence attempt • determine a new course of action if the influence technique you're using isn't working • succeed in every kind of organization-and even in other countries. Whether we're nodding our heads, shaking hands, making a presentation, or sharing our ideas with a customer or colleague, hardly a moment goes by in which we're not influencing others, or being influenced ourselves. Yet true masters of influence do more than attain mere compliance; they transcend it on a regular basis to achieve wholehearted, emotional commitment from others. More potent than passive consent, this enthusiastic and engaged response can even lead people to actively spread your message on to others, creating a powerful wave of continued support. Elements of Influence demystifies all the fundamentals of influence-the basics you need to know in order to generate more positive outcomes in both business and life. You'll learn how to pick up on the societal and cultural cues that reveal others' hidden motivations, and unlock the secrets to getting what you want while satisfying others in the process. Filled with exercises and practical applications, this book provides you with the wisdom, strategies, and techniques that will increase your ability to influence and achieve greater success.

Abstract: Let's say you're about to hire somebody for a position in your company. Your corporation wants someone who's fearless, charismatic, and full of new ideas. Candidate X is charming, smart, and has all the right answers to your questions. Problem solved, right? Maybe not. Psychopaths may enter as rising stars and corporate saviors, but all too soon they're abusing the trust of colleagues, manipulating supervisors, and leaving the workplace in shambles. In Snakes in Suits, corporate psychologist Dr. Paul Babiak teams up with psychopathy expert Dr. Robert Hare to focus on the psychopath's role in modern corporations. They found that it's exactly the modern, open, more flexible corporate world that is the perfect breeding ground for these employees. Snakes in Suits reveals psychopaths' secrets, introduces the ways in which they manipulate and deceive, and helps listeners see through their games. It is a compelling, frightening, and scientifically sound look at exactly how psychopaths work in the corporate environment, teaching you how they apply their "instinctive" manipulation techniques to business processes. It's a must listen for anyone in the business world, making you aware of the subtle warning signs of psychopathic behavior-before it's too late.
