    Abstract: "One Foot in Heaven conflates two religious perspectives on women propagated by the Islamist government of Sudan since its inception in 1989: as mothers and wives within the walls of their compounds. Central are the biographic narratives of two working women in Kebkabiya, a town in Darfur, each belonging to a different class: low-class market women and highly esteemed female teachers. Based on anthropological research (1990-1995) the author analyses the narratives as part of the multi-layered context in which these were performed - and of which the author also formed part. She shows how these women constructed identities while negotiating the Islamist moral discourse on gender in a period of ethnic conflict, religious transformation and the waging of the first Gulf-war."--Jacket

    Abstract: "Recent witchcraft historiography, particularly where it concerns the gender of the witch-suspect, has been dominated by theories of social conflict in which ordinary people colluded in the persecution of the witch sect. The reconstruction of the Eichstatt persecutions (1590-1631) in this book shows that many witchcraft episodes were imposed exclusively 'from above' as part of a programme of Catholic reform. The high proportion of female suspects in these cases resulted from the persecutors' demonology and their interrogation procedures. The confession narratives forced from the suspects reveal a socially integrated, if gendered, community rather than one in crisis. The book is a reminder that an overemphasis on one interpretation cannot adequately account for the many contexts in which witchcraft episodes occurred."--Jacket

    Abstract: For several years now, a significant number of coastal states have claimed a right to deny passage through their territorial seas, or even through their exclusive economic zones (EEZ), to ships carrying ultra-hazardous cargoes. The issue was particularly brought into the limelight with the trips of the Pacific Teal and the Pacific Pintail, in the framework of a nuclear fuel recycling programme between the UK/France and Japan. But claims in this direction have been expressed since at least the negotiation of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOS Convention).

    Abstract: The OECD Nuclear Law Committee first began looking at the impact of terrorist acts upon the nuclear liability insurance market in November 2001, shortly after the attacks which took place in the United States on 11 September of that same year. The Committee was concerned about the impact which terrorist acts might have on the ability of nuclear operators to obtain third party liability and material damage insurance coverage for nuclear incidents resulting from such acts.

    Abstract: For the Greek, Dionysos was a very important god: for individuals as well as for the community as a whole. As there are only a few written sources dating from before the 5th Century BC, the many images of Dionysos on Greek vases may well offer a genuine approach to the meaning given by the ancient viewer. This book explores the earliest images followed by those on small vases for private use, on mixing bowls of the symposion, on amphoras, on later drinking cups and on archaic sculptures.     Abstract: In the deep disposal of radioactive waste, the presence of several barriers serving complementary safety functions enhances confidence that the waste will be isolated and contained to protect human health and the environment. The barriers include the natural geological barrier and the engineered barrier system (EBS). The EBS itself may comprise a variety of sub-systems or components, such as the waste form, container, buffer, backfill, seals and plugs. These proceedings include the main findings and presented papers from the third NEA-EC workshop on engineered barrier systems, which focused on the role of EBS modelling in the safety case for deep disposal. The workshop examined the modelling tools currently available and identified complex areas of assessment in which further dialogue is needed.

    Abstract: Interest in nuclear energy continues to grow in many countries as a means to ensure security of energy supply and to limit greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. In this context, recyclable materials constitute an asset for broadening the resource base for nuclear fuel supply, especially in medium- and long-term perspectives. This report provides an overview of recyclable fissile and fertile materials inventories which can be reused as nuclear fuel. It reviews the options available for managing those materials, through recycling and/or disposal. The potential energetic value of recyclable materials is assessed, taking into account the variability of retrievable energy contents of various materials according to technology and strategy choices made by the owners of the materials. The analyses contained in this report will be of particular interest to energy policy makers and to nuclear fuel cycle experts.     Abstract: "Dialect, Culture and Society in Eastern Arabia" is a three-volume study of the Arabic dialects spoken in Bahrain by its older generation in the mid 1970s, and the socio-cultural factors that produced them. Volume I: Glossary, published in 2001, lists all the dialectal vocabulary, with extensive contextual exemplification, and cross-referenced to other lexica, which occurred in the complete set of texts recorded during fieldwork. Volume II: Ethnographic Texts presents a selection of these texts, transcribed, annotated and translated, and with detailed background essays, covering major aspects of the pre-oil culture of the Gulf and the initial stages of the transition to the modern era: pearl diving, agriculture, communal relations, marriage, childhood, domestic life, work. Excerpts from local dialect poems concerned with these subjects are also included. Volume III will comprise a detailed study of the linguistic structure of the dialects in their regional context

It is not, however, a handbook or guide on how to make regulatory decisions. In preparing the report, the task group reviewed and incorporated information from a wide array of documents produced by the NEA, its member countries and other international organisations, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safety Series reports.

    Abstract: The body of this report identifies several of the most important operational aspects of optimisation, while examples of specific applications of optimisation are provided in appendix. Specifically with respect to the development of new ICRP recommendations, several suggestions are made with respect to what should and should not be included. It is hoped that these operational suggestions will be broadly discussed by the international, operational radiological protection community, and will assist the ICRP in developing newrecommendations that will truly improve the radiological protection of the public, workers and the environment.

    Abstract: Pour toute institution juridique internationale, l’adoption d’un corpus réglementaire adapté traitant des problèmes rencontrés par la communauté internationale constitue l’un des plus formidables défis, en cette époque de mondialisation. L’Agence internationale de l’énergie atomique (l’AIEA) est la principale instance qui crée des normes juridiques internationales applicables aux utilisations pacifiques et sûres de l’énergie nucléaire et veille à leur uniformité et à leur respect. Nous nous proposons dans cette étude d’analyser un aspect de cette activité normative diversifiée destinée à établir un cadre juridique et réglementaire satisfaisant pour les activités nucléaires pacifiques.

    Abstract: One of the most serious challenges facing any international legal institution in the present era of globalisation is the adoption of adequate written laws that address the issues faced by the international community. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the principal forum to develop international legal norms to regulate the worldwide peaceful and safe use of nuclear energy – as well as to ensure the uniformity of standards and compliance with such norms. This study is an attempt to look, in particular, at one aspect of this diversified normative spectrum, created to shape an adequate legal and regulatory framework for peaceful nuclear activities.
