Abstract: Contemporary archaeology is polarised between 'scientists' who analyse, classify and describe, and social theorists, influenced by sociologies of science and culture theory. By emphasising the process of interpretation, this book shows that there is no necessary conflict between the aims and procedures of the various factions

Abstract: The third of three volumes of essays by Quentin Skinner, one of the world's leading intellectual historians. This collection includes some of his most important essays on Thomas Hobbes, each of which has been carefully revised for publication in this form. In a series of writings spanning the past four decades Professor Skinner examines, with his customary perspicuity, the evolution and character of Hobbes's political thought. An indispensable work in its own right, this volume also serves as a demonstration of those methodological theories propounded in Volume I, and as an appositional commentary on the Renaissance values of civic virtue treated in Volume II. All of Professor Skinner's work is characterised by philosophical power, limpid clarity, and elegance of exposition; these essays, many of which are now recognised classics, provide a fascinating and convenient digest of the development of his thought. Professer Skinner has been awarded the Balzan Prize Life Time Achievement Award for Political Thought, History and Theory. Full details of this award can be found at http://www.balzan.it/News_eng.aspx?ID=2474

Abstract: Appelbaum surveys literature from 1603 to the 1660s and shows how its ideal politics were engaged in the reality of political and social struggle. He also shows how self-defeating the exercise could be. In an era of political and religious conflict, writers asserted themselves as the authors of social and political ideals. But they also constructed systems in which the assertion of utopian mastery would have no place, and an ideal politics could no longer be imagined. This study will interest political and cultural historians as well as literary critics

His abiding concern was the primacy of the ethical relation to the other person and his central thesis was that ethics is first philosophy

Abstract: Britain's role in the First World War has been portrayed mainly through literature, films and plays, in most cases with a marked un-historical, anti-war spirit. This book follows the controversy from 1918 to the present, and concludes that historians are finally permitting the War to be placed in proper perspective

Abstract: "In this study, Nancy Henry introduces a new set of facts that place George Eliot's life and work within the contexts of mid nineteenth-century British colonialism and imperialism. Henry examines Eliot's roles as an investor in colonial stocks, a parent to emigrant sons, and a reader of colonial literature. She highlights the importance of these contexts to our understanding of both Eliot's fiction and her situation within Victorian culture. Henry argues that Eliot's decision to represent the empire only as it infiltrated the imaginations and domestic lives of her characters illuminates the nature of her realism. The book also re-examines the assumptions of post-colonial criticism about Victorian fiction and its relation to empire."--Jacket

Abstract: Some equations of interest and numerical approaches to solving them -- Duality transformations in two-dimensional media -- Translations and equivalent media -- Some microstructure-independent exact relations -- Exact relations for coupled equations -- Assemblages of spheres, ellipsoids, and other neutral inclusions -- Tricks for generating other exactly solvable microgeometries -- Laminate materials -- Approximations and asymptotic formulas -- Wave propagation in the quasistatic limit -- Reformulating the problem of finding effective tensors -- Variational principles and inequalities -- Series expansions for the fields and effective tensors -- Correlation functions and how they enter series expansions -- Other perturbation solutions -- The general theory of exact relations and links between effective tensors -- Analytic properties -- Y-tensors -- Y-tensors and effective tensors in electrical circuits -- Bounds on the properties of composites -- Classical variational principle bounds -- Bounds from the Hashin-Shtrikman variational inequalities -- Bounds using the compensated compactness or translation method -- Choosing the translations and finding microgeometries that attain the bounds -- Bounds incorporating three-point correlation functions -- Bounds using the analytic method -- Fractional linear transformations as a tool for generating bounds -- The field equation recursion method -- Properties of the G-closure and extremal families of composites -- The bounding of effective moduli as a quasiconvexification problem
Abstract: Although extensively studied for more than a hundred years, an explosion of ideas related to composite materials in the last four decades has dramatically increased our understanding of the relationship between the properties of the constituent materials, the underlying microstructure of a composite, and the overall effective (electrical, thermal, elastic) moduli which govern the macroscopic behavior. This book surveys these exciting developments at the frontier of mathematics and presents many new results

Abstract: The path adolescents take from childhood to adulthood is a product of social, economic, political, and technological forces. These forces may facilitate youth's preparation to become healthy adults, or they may leave youth unprepared for adulthood. Knowledgeable projections are vital in shaping the agenda for research; for alerting educators, policy makers, and practitioners to new issues; and for formulating thoughtful responses to emerging dilemmas. This book focuses upon the future of adolescence in postindustrial societies. The authors identify some ominous societal changes that will affect youth: unstable job markets, competition for public resources due to an aging population, and widening income gaps between 'information workers' and low-skill workers. But they also observe opportunities created by information technology, innovations in health service delivery and criminal-justice rehabilitation, and the resourcefulness of a new generation. This volume examines these and other macro-structural changes that will impact adolescents' lives and their futures as adults.

Abstract: "China poses great challenges to human rights in theory and practice. In practice, China is considered, by the measure of most Western countries, to have a patchy record of protecting individuals' human rights. In the theoretical realm, Chinese intellectuals and government officials have challenged the idea that the term "human rights" can be universally understood in one single way and have often opposed attempts by Western countries to impose international standards on Asian countries." "What should we make of these challenges - and of claims by members of other groups to have moralities of their own? Human Rights and Chinese Thought gives an extended answer to these questions in the first study of its kind. Stephen C. Angle integrates a full account of the development of Chinese rights discourse - reaching back to important, although neglected, origins of that discourse in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Confucianism - with philosophical considerations of how various communities should respond to contemporary Chinese claims about the uniqueness of their human rights concepts." "Drawing on Western thinkers such as Richard Rorty, Alasdair MacIntyre, Michael Walzer, Allan Gibbard, and Robert Brandom, Angle elaborates a plausible kind of moral pluralism and demonstrates that Chinese ideas of human rights do indeed have distinctive characteristics. His conclusion is not that we should ignore one another, though. Despite our differences, Angle argues that cross-cultural moral engagement is legitimate and even morally required. International moral dialogue is a dynamic and complex process, and we all have good reasons for continuing to work toward bridging our differences."--Jacket
