Kurzfassung: This book focuses on Robert Rosen’s contributions to relational system theory, which is the science of organization and function. This science was originally developed by Nicolas Rashevsky, and further developed by Rashevsky’s student Robert Rosen, and continues to be developed by Rosen’s student A. H. Louie amongst others. Due to its revolutionary character, it is often misunderstood, and to some, controversial. The formal and conceptual setting for Rosen’s relational system theory is category theory. Rosen was the first to apply category theory to scientific problems, outside of pure mathematics, and the first to think about science from the point of view of category theory. To better understand the work of Rosen, this book provides an overview of his theory of modeling, complexity, anticipation, and organism. It presents the foundations of this science and the philosophical motivations behind it along with conceptual clarification and historical context in order to present Rosen’s ideas to a wider audience.

Kurzfassung: There has been a steady stream of articles written on the relations between political thought and the interpretation of literature, but there remains a need for a book that both introduces and significantly contributes to the field – particularly one that shows in detail how we can think more freely and creatively about political possibilities by reading and reflecting on politically significant literature. This volume offers analytically acute and culturally rich ways of understanding how it is that we can productively think philosophically about political literature and what kind of distinctive conceptual progress we can make by doing so. Given the extremely widespread interest in political issues, this volume will strike resonant chords far and wide, while offering something that has not been done quite in this way and for which the time certainly seems right. Garry L. Hagberg is the James H. Ottaway Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics at Bard College, USA and Editor of the journal Philosophy and Literature. Author of four books and editor of nine volumes, he is presently completing a new book, Consciousness Portrayed: Seven Case Studies in Philosophical Literature.

Kurzfassung: This book is a comprehensive study of the history of pew-renting in the church of England, from the first known rented sittings in the fifteenth century to the system’s collapse in the twentieth. The book’s significance is partly its originality; no book and very few articles or portions of books have appeared solely on pew-renting since the nineteenth century, and even those of that time were not histories – they were polemical works that generally attacked pew-renting on religious grounds. This work encompasses the distinction between formal letting of seats – which involved the methodical letting of sittings by church authorities with set rents – and informal pew-letting, in which congregants tipped pew-openers and sidesmen for favourable seats for one service. It also details the concomitant difficulties and hindrances encountered by churches and renters, the means of setting the rents and collecting the proceeds, the types of congregants who rented pews, the controversy the practice provoked, and the deception and bending – and sometimes outright breaking – of the applicable law. J.C. Bennett received his PhD in History from the University of Birmingham in 2011. He has currently an appellate attorney in Texas, USA.

Kurzfassung: Stephen Glynn has produced a terrific book on British TV sitcom spinoff films. He writes clearly and concisely and with a demonstrable passion for the subject. He pulls off the difficult trick of bringing an impressive breadth of knowledge to this material while also communicating it in helpful and often amusing ways. -Paul Newland, University of Worcester This book constitutes the first full volume dedicated to an academic analysis of theatrically-released spinoff films derived from British radio and television sitcoms. Regularly maligned as the nadir of British film production and marginalised as a last resort for the financially-bereft industry during the 1970s, this study demonstrates that the sitcom spinoff film has instead been a persistent and important presence in British cinema from the 1940s to the present day, and includes works with distinct artistic merit. Alongside an investigation of the economic imperative underpinning these productions, i.e. the exploitation of a proven product with a ready-made audience, it is argued that, with a longevity stretching from Arthur Askey and his wartime Band Waggon (1940) to the crew of Kurupt FM and their recent People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (2021), the British sitcom spinoff can be interpreted as following a full generic ‘life cycle’. Starting with the ‘formative’ stage where works from Hi Gang! (1941) to I Only Arsked! (1958) establish the genre’s characteristics, the spinoff genre moves to its ‘classic’ stage where, secure for form and content, it enjoys considerable popular success with films like Till Death Us Do Part (1969), On the Buses (1971), The Likely Lads (1976) and Rising Damp (1980); the genre’s revival since the late-1990s reveals a more ‘parodic’ final stage, with films like The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse (2005) adopting a consciously self-reflective mode. It is also posited that the sitcom spinoff film is a viable source for social history, with the often-stereotypical re-presentations of characters and events an ideological metonym for the concerns of wider British society, notably in issues of class, race, gender and sexuality. Stephen Glynn lectures in Film and Television at De Montfort University, UK. He has published widely on British cinema and genre and previous volumes for Palgrave include The British Pop Music Film (2013), The British School Film (2016) and The British Football Film (2018).

Kurzfassung: This translation of Musique au singulier (2001) from the French identifies what is common to music of all times and cultures. The author, François-Bernard Mâche is a composer and internationally renowned musicologist. He addresses the question of universals in music and demonstrates how musical play is a poetic and natural game that already takes shape in the animal world. Mâche invites the reader to reconsider the traditional opposition between nature and culture and to reflect on experiencing such intense emotions when both listening to and manipulating sounds. This title appeals to students and researchers working in musicology.

Kurzfassung: Performative Representation of Working-Class Laborers: They Work Hard for the Money is a transdisciplinary anthology intersecting art theory praxis, comparative literature, film & media studies, performance art, ethnic studies, gender studies, age & aging, geography, and labor studies. The book investigates and analyzes artwork created by artists or collectives working within the dialogue of Postmodernism and current global arts production. The focus on performative aspect of labor as art and affect becomes more sensate and less about the exploited body of labourers, liberating the representation of waged bodies and further diversifying the field of Working-Class Studies. Kurzfassung: Graham J. Murphy demonstrates his bona fides as an expert reader of cyberculture in this study of William Gibson’s hugely consequential first novel, already canonized as one of the late twentieth century’s most influential expressions of technoculture. Murphy’s concise and nuanced analysis looks at Neuromancer through a variety of critical lenses and, in the process, very usefully addresses issues such as gender, embodiment, and the posthuman that have sometimes been over-simplified in earlier readings. Riffing on Fredric Jameson, he concludes that Neuromancer is “the supreme literary expression of capitalist realism,” set in a future-present that seems increasingly to mirror our own moment. Murphy convincingly makes the case for Neuromancer’s ongoing relevance to a present scarred by eco-crisis and hyper-globalization. —Dr. Veronica Hollinger, Science Fiction Studies William Gibson’s Neuromancer: A Critical Companion offers everything you could hope for from such a volume, and more. Graham J. Murphy not only provides historical and critical contexts, citing an impressive array of sources, but also offers an authoritative and insightful reading of the novel that makes significant contributions to an understanding of what the book is actually about and how it remains chillingly relevant today. One does not typically expect original insights in a companion volume, but Murphy offers several highly persuasive ones here. Accessible and engaging, this book has much to offer anyone interested in Gibson, from advanced scholars to undergraduate students. Essential reading. – Dr. Dominick Grace, Non-Fiction Reviews Editor, SFRA Review Graham J. Murphy had had his own cyberpunk implant, and like many of us it’s a Gibson augmentation. You can upgrade yours by reading this ecstatic account of how William Gibson’s Neuromancer does what it does. Murphy matches Gibson's super specificity with his own, keenly detailing the cultural factors that shape cyberpunk and Neuromancer. The range of scholarly references here indicate the importance of Gibson's novel as much as Murphy's seriousness about representing the discourse. Read it, teach it, cite it. – Dr. Brent Ryan Bellamy, Trent University William Gibson’s Neuromancer: A Critical Companion presents Gibson’s rise as an influential figure within and beyond the science fiction field. Gibson’s success with Neuromancer, the first novel to win the Hugo Award, Nebula Award, and Philip K. Dick Award, is in part a direct result of the rising popularity of cyberpunk in the early- to mid-1980s, although it could just as easily be said cyberpunk’s success was in no small part a direct result of Neuromancer’s explosion onto the science fiction scene. Neuromancer’s ongoing relevance remains undiminished because we are effectively living in a technocultural age that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from Gibson’s novel. As Graham J. Murphy demonstrates in this companion, the novel remains instrumental in thinking through the ongoing explorations of the posthuman: transhumanism, the Utopia/Anti-Utopia dynamic, and capitalist realism, to name a few of the more significant critical vehicles with which to better understand and contextualize our technocultural age and Neuromancer’s role in both shaping it and responding to it. This book provides a critical introduction to Neuromancer and cyberpunk culture. Graham J. Murphy is Professor with the School of English and Liberal Studies, Seneca Polytechnic, Canada. He is co-editor of Fifty Key Figures in Cyberpunk Culture (2022), The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture (2020), Cyberpunk and Visual Culture (2018), and Beyond Cyberpunk: New Critical Perspectives (2010) and co-author of Ursula K. Le Guin: A Critical Companion (2006).

Kurzfassung: This open access book is about causal thinking and the use of causal language, with a focus on introducing philosophical ideas about causation to students and researchers of Social-Ecological Systems (SES). It takes a systematic approach to three central topics: the meanings of different causal expressions, sufficiency of evidence for inferences from observations to causal relations, and how to handle the complexity of causal relations in social-ecological systems. Consequently, the book is divided into three parts. In the first part the authors analyse and discuss the use of causal idiom in ordinary language, and in the second part they scrutinise the use of causal concepts and causal inference in science. Finally, the authors discuss causal reasoning about social-ecological systems in multi- and interdisciplinary contexts. This book provides an analysis of the concept of causation useful in the empirical sciences, where causal notions and idioms often are used without sufficient reflection. Empirical sciences often use causal idiom drawn from ordinary language, and similarly there is little formalisation of causal language and technical concepts in the humanities and social sciences. This book is a valuable resource for the application of current philosophical discussions about the concept of causation, in particular when applied to the analysis of social-ecological systems, but also when applied to research in the sciences and humanities.

Kurzfassung: Madness, Psychiatry, and Empire in Postcolonial Literature provides a comparatist interrogation of empire through archives of history, science, and literature. The book analyzes Aimé Césaire’s Discourse on Colonialism to shed light on Césaire’s critique of psychological and medical discourses of the colonized’s mind. The book argues that the discourse of psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis has erased the context of power in global histories of empire. Through the book’s chapters, Chi analyzes Lu Xun’s “A Madman’s Diary,” Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, and Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions to assert that the misapprehension of madness should not automatically be accepted as the history of an isolated Western culture but rather that of the history of imperialism—a globalizing process that silences alternative cultural conceptions of the mind, of madness, and of behavior, as well as different interpretations of madness. Chienyn Chi received her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Texas at Austin, USA, and is working on her second book, The Colony and The City.

Kurzfassung: “Trauma, Memory, and the Lebanese Post-War Novel” marshals profound research into the fictional work of Rabee Jaber to undertake the first in-depth analysis of one of the most innovative contemporary literary voices. The book invites us all to situate ourselves within a post-war fiction that articulates a pressing criticism and envisions the important place of contemporary Arab literature in reflecting our global societies. – Liliana Gómez, University of Kassel, author of Archive Matter. A Camera in the Laboratory of the Modern Drawing on innovative methodologies and activating a literary-theoretical dialogue across disciplines, involving art and literature, critical theory and Arabic writing, the book contributes to a new approach to the war and postwar literature that connects debates in literary scholarship with those in art and anthropology. It particularly allows us to discover the potential of the Arabic literary text to inform theoretical models on loss and haunting beyond their context and articulation. – Barbara Winckler, University of Münster, co-editor of Arabic Literature – Postmodern Perspectives A first book-length study of Rabee Jaber’s work. Skilfully combining theoretical reflection, close reading of novels, and in-depth analysis of the narrative techniques used to convey a sense of trauma, while constantly tying it to the political-historical context, it opens up new avenues in the way it interrogates literature to talk about Lebanon's ‘invisible histories.’ It thus demonstrates how Arabic fiction contributes to the understanding and processing of traumatic events in post-conflict societies. – Barbara Winckler, co-editor of Arabic Literature – Postmodern Perspectives Writing the history of the civil war disappeared in Lebanon, as in many post-conflict societies, remains a very challenging task considering the ensuing controversial resolutions. In its close reading of three Lebanese novels by Rabee Jaber, this book follows a multidisciplinary approach to generate methods that contest the impossibility of writing the inaccessible history of those who had gone missing during the war. Dani Nassif holds a PhD in modern Arabic literature and culture and is currently adjunct lecturer at the University of Regensburg, Germany. .

Kurzfassung: This book illuminates the complex relationship between social media, identity, and youth in the Global South. By examining the profound impact on the psychosocial well-being and economic prospects of young people across diverse regions, the collection present empirical evidence from scholars spanning Asia, Africa, North America, Central, and South America. Contributors show how young people experience adverse side-effects online, such as social withdrawal, or animosity to others, and how good social health and social media use can help young people develop economic resources, become independent, and socially responsible. Additionally, the book explores the role of social media channels, such as Facebook and Instagram, in the rise of cyberbullying, sexting, and online radicalization; how these platforms re-negotiate identity in developing countries and compromise productivity; and how the behaviour of celebrities on said platforms influence youth behaviour. Structured into five thematic sections, this book presents a nuanced understanding of the well-being implications arising from social media use among young people hailing from diverse socio-cultural and economic backgrounds and political exigencies. Emmanuel Ngwainmbi is a Professor of International Communication, former Chair & Graduate School Professor, Department of Mass Communication, Jackson State University, MS., and a member of the International Association for Media, Communication, and Research, the International Association of Intercultural Communication Studies, the National Communication Association, International Conference on Social Sciences. Kurzfassung: Open access. This open-access book discusses vulnerability and the protection-inclusion dilemma of including those who suffer from serious poverty, severe stigma, and structural violence in research. Co-written with representatives from indigenous peoples in South Africa and sex workers in Nairobi, the authors come down firmly on the side of inclusion. In the spirit of leaving no one behind in research, the team experimented with data collection methods that prioritize research participant needs over researcher needs. This involved foregoing the collection of personal data and community researchers being involved in all stages of the research. In the process, the term ‘vulnerability’ was illuminated across significant language barriers as it was defined by indigenous peoples and sex workers themselves. The book describes a potential alternative to exclusion from research that moves away from traditional research methods. By ensuring that the research is led by vulnerable groups for vulnerable groups, it offers an approach that fosters trust and collaboration with benefits for the community researchers, the wider community as well as research academics. Those living in low-income settings, in dire situations that are summarized with the term ‘vulnerability’ know best what their problems are and which priorities they have. To exclude them from research for their own protection is a patronizing approach which insinuates that researchers and research ethics committees know best. The team from this book have shown that minimally risky and minimally burdensome research tailored towards the needs of highly marginalized and stigmatized communities can be scientifically valuable as well as inclusive and equitable. I congratulate them. Prof. Klaus Leisinger, President Global Values Alliance, Former personal advisor to Kofi Annan on corporate responsibility .

Kurzfassung: This open access book is a superb collection of some fifteen chapters inspired by Schroeder-Heister's groundbreaking work, written by leading experts in the field, plus an extensive autobiography and comments on the various contributions by Schroeder-Heister himself. For several decades, Peter Schroeder-Heister has been a central figure in proof-theoretic semantics, a field of study situated at the interface of logic, theoretical computer science, natural-language semantics, and the philosophy of language. The chapters of which this book is composed discuss the subject from a rich variety of angles, including the history of logic, the proper interpretation of logical validity, natural deduction rules, the notions of harmony and of synonymy, the structure of proofs, the logical status of equality, intentional phenomena, and the proof theory of second-order arithmetic. All chapters relate directly to questions that have driven Schroeder-Heister's own research agenda and to which he has made seminal contributions. The extensive autobiographical chapter not only provides a fascinating overview of Schroeder-Heister's career and the evolution of his academic interests but also constitutes a contribution to the recent history of logic in its own right, painting an intriguing picture of the philosophical, logical, and mathematical institutional landscape in Germany and elsewhere since the early 1970s. The papers collected in this book are illuminatingly put into a unified perspective by Schroeder-Heister's comments at the end of the book. Both graduate students and established researchers in the field will find this book an excellent resource for future work in proof-theoretic semantics and related areas.

Kurzfassung: This book challenges the prevailing notion of stability, cohesiveness, and uniformity within Christian communities, inviting readers to view contestation and disagreement as integral to theological reflection and church identity. While the volume focuses predominantly on the Roman Catholic Church as a case study, various chapters broaden the exploration across other Christian and non-Christian traditions. Beginning with the philosophical and theological foundations of conflict, contestation, and community, the book subsequently focuses on four main conflict fields: liturgy, canon law, gender, and sexuality, as well as race and postcolonial critical theory. The book finishes with a constructive proposal on how to think theologically about identity and antagonisms, as well as how to construct an ecclesiology of dissent. Contributors employ diverse methodological perspectives to offer constructive theological reflections, enhancing both understanding and practice of theology in the context of polarised public debates. This is an open access book. Judith Gruber is an associate professor of systematic theology at KU Leuven, Belgium, and the director of KU Leuven’s Centre for Liberation Theologies. Michael Schüßler is a professor of practical theology at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen since 2015. Ryszard Bobrowicz is a postdoctoral fellow at KU Leuven and an affiliate researcher at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies, Lund University. He serves as the theological advisor for the Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe and collaborates with the Atlas of Religion or Belief Minority Rights.

Kurzfassung: “This is a marvelous and original piece of scholarship. El-Badawi’s fresh and controversial ideas will make waves among his peers in the academy, and I mean that in a good way. The author shows remarkable awareness of the history, literature, and epigraphy of the region, very wide and deep. He pulls together a variety of sources and moves easily between them. This is a mature work that shows El-Badawi a first-rate scholar at the top of his field.” —David Penchansky, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA This is the first book to examine how pre-Islamic/Late Antique goddesses shaped the Qur’an, including its basic theology and cosmology. Exploring the traces found in the text of cultic veneration to goddesses of Arabia and the Ancient Near East, this book analyses what these traces tell us about female power in late antique Arabia, and how this power changed on the advent of Islam. While recent studies on the Qur’anic God have typically considered the question of divinity separately from gender, this book bridges the gap between these two questions, and is therefore an essential constructive mission. This mission adduces literary and documentary evidence—including recent scholarly revolutions in Syriac literature and Arabian epigraphy—and builds upon the critical insights of preceding studies in conversation with post-biblical and Near Eastern traditions. Emran El-Badawi is Dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at Tarleton State University, where he is also Full Professor of History, Geography and GIS. He was formerly Chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Houston, where he also served as Associate Professor and Program Director of Middle Eastern Studies. He is author of Queens and Prophets (Oneworld, 2022); The Qur’an and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions (2013), and co-editor of Communities of the Qur’an (Oneworld, 2019). His current research projects include a book on female power in late antique Arabia, and another on hate speech as a global crisis. He has contributed to Forbes, The Houston Chronicle, and The Christian Science Monitor.

Kurzfassung: This book is the second of a three-volume set introducing the history of scientific thought (including social and human science) and covers the Latin Middle Ages, the Renaissance period, and the 17th century. Combining general descriptions with extensive excerpts from original sources in English translation, it concentrates on ways of thinking and actual argumentation and not just on results and mistakes; questions of validity are primarily dealt with in the perspective of the time of the writing, not on that of the 21st century. The work is of great interest to historians of science and culture, students as well as seasoned workers – but also for amateurs willing to invest the necessary serious efforts.

Kurzfassung: ‘By following the British Trade Corporation and the reversal of its fortunes in markets stretching from Danzig and Belgrade to the Middle East in the years after the First World War, this deeply researched book makes an important contribution to the debate about Britain’s decline.’ – Frank Trentmann, Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London. This book is the first comprehensive history of the British Trade Corporation, which was constituted under a Royal Charter on 21st April 1917. Its charter was meant to last for sixty years, but in 1926, after a turbulent existence of only nine years, it was amalgamated with the Anglo-Austrian Bank, and absorbed into the Anglo-International Bank. The corporation together with its two main subsidiaries, the Levant Company and the National Bank of Turkey, conducted business not only in Britain but in Russia, Turkey, the Middle East and in Continental Europe. Although the corporation was not an agent of empire, it reflected Britain’s imperialistic ambitions after the First World War. As a result, it invested in some of the most unstable regions of the world. It was also severely affected by British foreign policy, which was often misjudged and, at times, duplicitous, resulting in serious damage to British trade. Within five years of its launch, the British Trade Corporation needed to be refinanced. The economic downturn in the early 1920s and ongoing hostilities in Eastern Europe and the Near East meant that it struggled to survive. Its difficulties reflected many of those faced by Britain in general after the war and the need to come to terms with the new realities of the post-war world. Despite its innovative attempt to address the perceived deficiencies in Britain’s financial system, especially in respect of industrial finance, the British Trade Corporation has been largely ignored by financial historians. Based on substantial archival research, this book rectifies this neglect and makes an important contribution to the financial history of interwar Britain. Brian O’Sullivan is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College, London. His book From Crisis to Crisis: The Transformation of Merchant Banking, 1914-1939 (Palgrave, 2018) was jointly awarded the BAC Wadsworth Prize in 2019. Brian has held senior roles in a number of financial institutions and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and of the Royal Historical Society.

Kurzfassung: This book analyzes and understands the complexity of digital poverty by considering its intersecting nature with socioeconomic and environmental poverty. The rapid digital acceleration that has characterized contemporary society in recent decades, notably accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has profoundly reshaped societal structures and dynamics. Our direction depends on how we integrate digital technologies into social structures, utilize them for environmental protection, and master their use rather than being passive consumers. Digital Environmental Poverty is split into three sections. Section I explores the multidimensional nature of poverty, emphasizing the necessity to view it beyond economic terms, and placing it within the contemporary digital-environmental evolution. Section II focuses on the environmental dimension of poverty. Section III offers case studies illustrating the interplay between social, digital, and environmental poverty. The conclusion provides recommendations to anticipate and mitigate the risk of digital environmental poverty. Maria Laura Ruiu is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at Northumbria University (UK). Her research interests are environmental and media sociology with a specific focus on environmental communication, social capital and digital media. Massimo Ragnedda is Associate Professor in Media and Communication at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK where he researches the digital divide and social media.

Kurzfassung: Review of the Two Existing Artificial Neural Network Models – Multilayer Perceptron and Probabilistic Neural Networks -- Beyond the Original PNN Model – Kernel Memory for Modeling Various Neural Pattern Processing Mechanism -- Modules within the Artificial Mind System and Their Interactions Relevant to Language Pattern Processing -- Concept Formation.
Kurzfassung: This book proposes a novel connectionist approach to a challenging topic of language modeling within the context of kernel memory and artificial mind system, both proposed previously by the author in the very first volume of the series, Artificial Mind System—Kernel Memory Approach: Studies in Computational Intelligence, Vol. 1. The present volume focuses on how syntactic structures of language are modeled in terms of the respective composite connectionist architectures, each embracing both the nonsymbolic and symbolic parts. These two parts are developed via inter-module processes within the artificial mind system and eventually integrated under a unified framework of kernel memory. The data representation by the networks embodied within the kernel memory principle is essentially local, unlike conventional artificial neural network models such as the pervasive multilayer perceptron-based neural networks. With this locality principle, kernel memory inherently bears many attractive features, such as topologically unconstrained network formation, straightforward network growing, shrinking, and reconfiguration, no requirement of arduous iterative parameter tuning, construction of transparent and hierarchical data structures, and multimodal and temporal data processing via the network representation. Exploiting these multifacet properties of kernel memory with interweaving the notion of inter-module processing within the artificial mind system provides coherent accounts for concept formation and how various linguistic phenomena, viz. word compoundings, morphologies, and multiword constructions, are modeled. The description is then extended to more intricate network models of context-dependent lexical network and syntactic-oriented processing, the latter being the central theme of the present study, and further to those representing a hybrid of nonverbal and verbal thinking, and semantic and pragmatic aspects of sentential meaning. The book is intended for general readers engaging in various areas of study in cognitive science, computer science, engineering, linguistics, philosophy, psycholinguistics, and psychology.

Kurzfassung: This book delves deep into fractional-order control and fractional-order sliding mode techniques, addressing key challenges in the control design of linear motor systems and control for the deployment of space tethered systems. Innovative strategies such as adaptive fractional-order sliding mode control and fractional-order fuzzy sliding mode control schemes are devised to enhance system performance. Divided into three parts, it covers a brief view of fractional-order control strength in modeling and control, fractional-order sliding mode control of linear motor systems, and fractional-order sliding mode control for the deployment of space tethered systems. Each chapter offers valuable insights and solutions. Simulations and experiments validate the efficacy of these approaches, making this book essential for researchers, engineers, and practitioners in control systems and aerospace engineering.

Kurzfassung: This book explores how artificial intelligence, the platform economy, and big data will impact economic development and societal change. It outlines how artificial intelligence is used as a capitalist tool that aids the corporate monopoly and creates alienating development. The ways in which artificial intelligence effects governance, economies, and global societies is also discussed, with particular attention given to how it undermines various forms of democracy. This book aims to challenge established theories on artificial intelligence and technological singularity and highlight how they create new forms of capital accumulation. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in the economic and social impact of artificial intelligence. Kurzfassung: This book contributes to a worldwide history of textual criticism and critical editions of ancient scientific texts. It first looks at ancient editorial practices, and at their impact on modern editions. Contributions analyze how, through time, the perception of what a text was may have changed, and influenced how scholarly texts were made accessible. The second section looks at the historical, political and social contexts within which editions and translations of ancient scientific texts were produced. Finally, the last two parts examine the specificities of editions and translations that bore on scholarly documents. Not only is there a focus on how the elements specific to scientific texts—such as diagrams and numbers—were treated, but case studies analyzing the specific work carried out to edit mathematical and astronomical texts of the past are also offered to the reader. The scholarship displayed in this work lays the foundation for further studies on the history of critical editions and raises questions to those who make scholarly translations and critical editions today.

Kurzfassung: This book encompasses three distinct yet interconnected objectives. Firstly, it aims to present and elucidate novel metaheuristic algorithms that feature innovative search mechanisms, setting them apart from conventional metaheuristic methods. Secondly, this book endeavors to systematically assess the performance of well-established algorithms across a spectrum of intricate and real-world problems. Finally, this book serves as a vital resource for the analysis and evaluation of metaheuristic algorithms. It provides a foundational framework for assessing their performance, particularly in terms of the balance between exploration and exploitation, as well as their capacity to obtain optimal solutions. Collectively, these objectives contribute to advancing our understanding of metaheuristic methods and their applicability in addressing diverse and demanding optimization tasks. The materials were compiled from a teaching perspective. For this reason, the book is primarily intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computational Mathematics. Additionally, engineering practitioners who are not familiar with metaheuristic computation concepts will appreciate that the techniques discussed are beyond simple theoretical tools because they have been adapted to solve significant problems that commonly arise in engineering areas.

Kurzfassung: This volume draws readers into the exciting world of the Dead Sea Scrolls – around 930 manuscripts which were discovered in caves near the ancient settlement of Qumran between 1947 and 1956, and which transformed scholarship of the Bible, Judaism and Christianity. Ten scholars working at the forefront of their field address big-picture issues in relation to the scroll fragments, including their preservation and conservation; their availability electronically; and their relation to Rabbinic literature. The book also looks at the archaeology of Qumran, and the history and identity of the community; ancient writing systems; the scrolls in relation to the wider world of the time – the practice of magic and demonology, prayer, and colonial violence and power – as well as representations of them in popular media. The volume situates Dead Sea Scrolls scholarship within broader conversations in the study of the ancient world: Biblical Studies, Religious Studies, Classics, Archaeology, Jewish Studies, and Ancient History. Kurzfassung: This book presents a unique historical study on the origins of longevity risk management and its links to religious institutions in the eighteenth century. Throughout history, monarchs, affluent patrons, and wealthy benefactors routinely pledged to provide their devotees with pensions or life annuities, mirroring the biblical concept of ‘daily bread for life’. Until the eighteenth century, however, the uncertainty around the longevity of beneficiaries’ lives and the difficulty of budgeting for random financial obligations had posed economic challenges that often led to insufficient funding and high default rates. This book narrates the genesis of longevity risk pooling and the first successfully funded annuity scheme in history, an eventual prototype for national pension plans around the world. It examines how a group of Protestant clergymen, scientists, and intellectuals associated with the Presbyterian Church of Scotland pioneered innovative methods for setting up a reversionary annuity and widow’s pension plan, guided by actuarial principles. Unknown to many, the economist Adam Smith, and other literati of the Scottish Enlightenment, invested in this novel annuity. Illuminating the social and theological contexts of this scheme, the book argues that religious belief played a critical role in the development of best practices around the prudent management of longevity risk. The practices, values and beliefs in divine probabilities were at the heart of these thought leaders’ confidence in long-term financial projections. Shedding light on this fascinating aspect of actuarial history by an examination of the archival records, while also linking to contextual discussions of modern pension challenges, this book will be of interest to scholars and readers interested in finance, insurance, pensions, and religion. Kurzfassung: This book offers insight into the most important scientific society on urban morphology worldwide: the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF). After addressing the three-decade history of ISUF, the book analyses the present and future of this scientific society, of urban morphology, and of human settlements. This timely and fundamental reflection gathers contributions from present and past leadership of ISUF since its inception in 1994. Over the last three decades, the urban world has undergone major changes: the urban population is now higher than the rural population; more than half of the world's population lives on a single continent—Asia, home to almost three billion people in China and India alone—so geographical imbalance is considerable; and while half of the urban population still lives in small cities of fewer than 300,000 inhabitants, the number of megacities has increased significantly. How does the physical form of cities in different parts of the world respond to these dynamics? Can cities preserve fundamental elements of humankind's urban heritage while accommodating changes driven by the main socioeconomic and environmental needs of today? The field of urban morphology has been continuously adjusting to the essential dynamics of its object of study. While developing and strengthening its most robust theories, concepts, and methods designed after the mid-twentieth century, urban morphology has been able to integrate innovative approaches for describing and explaining the emerging dynamics and patterns of urban form—often incorporating groundbreaking technologies for data collection, analysis, modelling, and simulation. But what is the role of urban morphology in science and society today? How effective is it in communicating a rigorous understanding of the urban landscape both to academics and researchers in other fields and to citizens in general? How successful is it in providing practitioners with relevant and useful knowledge that informs their action on cities' form and structure through spatial planning, urban design, and architecture? This book addresses these fundamental questions, offering academics, researchers, and practitioners comprehensive knowledge on human settlements, the field of urban morphology, and the role of ISUF in promoting groundbreaking morphological thought.

Kurzfassung: Cryptocurrencies and digital assets have continued to gain widespread acceptance from both retail and institutional investors. As part of this continued growth, there has been an unfortunate series of ongoing and increasingly sophisticated frauds, Ponzi schemes, and hacks that have cost investors billions of dollars. Since the publication of the original Cryptocurrency and Digital Asset Fraud Casebook, conservative estimates indicate that there have been thousands of new digital asset fraud cases that have contributed to billions in broadening losses in space. Beyond the digital asset space, cryptocurrency-related scams also continue to present increasingly meaningful threats to traditional finance institutions, the global economy, and national security, as well. These new challenges, combined with the ongoing evolving regulatory environment for digital assets, create an environment where there is a continued need for the up-to-date information and analysis of real-world case studies. It includes an up-to-date analysis of recent case studies in cryptocurrency and digital asset fraud alongside an analysis of recent decentralized finance (DeFi) hacks, smart contract attacks, and rug pulls. This book reviews the impact of digital asset bankruptcies, the FTX fraud, and the industry-wide post-FTX fallout on the growth of cryptocurrency fraud. It also examines the explosive growth of cryptocurrency romance scams, pig butchering, and related organized crime money laundering efforts and includes a related exclusive case study. Offering an in-depth examination of digital asset frauds in the gaming, metaverse, and NFT spaces, it also covers Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) fraud, smart contract attacks, dApp scams, crypto asset manager investment fraud, mining fraud, honeypots, meme coins, and artificial intelligence-based digital asset fraud. Leveraging the author’s experience analyzing and implementing compliance and operations best practices with a variety of cryptocurrency and digital asset projects and consulting with international regulators on blockchain and digital asset policy, this book will be of interest to those working throughout the cryptocurrency and digital asset space including Web 3.0 builders and service providers including lawyers, auditors, blockchain infrastructure, regulators, governments, retail investors, and institutional investors. Kurzfassung: This book offers an in-depth analysis of and multidisciplinary insights into the latest trends in biodiversity laws, policies and science in Europe, the United States, and China. The loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems continues at an alarming rate, harming people, the economy, and the climate. As biodiversity cannot be meaningfully addressed by any single field, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to attain a better understanding of its complexity and to identify prevention and protection systems. Each chapter addresses a specific aspect of biodiversity. Taken together, they provide an innovative exploration of the various facets of biodiversity from the perspectives of law, the social sciences and natural sciences. As such, the book offers an essential theoretical and practical guide for academics, experts, policymakers, and students alike. Today we have a unique opportunity to invest in the health of our planet and put people and nature at the center of our political agenda. Through the Global Biodiversity Framework we are all making concrete commitments against ecosystem degradation, in the protection of endangered species, and to initiate transformative actions that integrate biodiversity into all sectors. Kurzfassung: “This book bridges the gap between an academic introduction and an engaging dinner-table conversation. Basic concepts, meanings and misconceptions in the study of language are introduced in a lively interaction between two friends and provide fascinating insights into language and communication.” -Andreas H. Jucker, University of Zurich, Switzerland “Karol Janicki is right: the general public is still not fully aware of the important role language plays in our society. I wish his new book, which is written in a very comprehensible and dialogue-based style, many readers – particularly with a lay, non-linguistic background.” -Martin Stegu, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria “Karol Janicki’s is a much needed, clearly written text for non-linguists who tend to be naïve users of language, despite the fact that most of what they do for a living (think of medical doctors, lawyers, teachers, journalists, politicians etc.) cruciallydepends on their use of language. One strong selling point is that the entire work is presented in dialogs rather than classical academic prose.” -Miklós Kontra, Károli Gáspár University, Budapest, Hungary This book covers several related topics anchored in the idea of how meaning is created. The central focus in the book is, however, on how language awareness may help us communicate smoothly and solve social problems. The book takes up language misconceptions and their social significance, and promotes the view that regarding meaning (and language in general) as open and flexible, rather than closed and rigid, may lead to critical thinking, innovation, and creativity. The book covers topics such as words and things, words and emotions, fake news and hate speech, and it has been written in the form of short informal dialogues to engage readers and make linguistic concepts accessible. Karol Janicki is Professor Emeritus inthe Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen, Norway. His recent research interests have focused on language and conflict, lay people’s language problems, language and education, general semantics, applied cognitive linguistics, and socio-political aspects of language.

Kurzfassung: Introduction -- The Mistake Doctrine in German and English Contract Law -- A Psychological Approach to Contractual Mistakes -- Technical Overview of AI and its Participation in the Contract Formation -- AI-made Mistakes in the Contract Formation -- Conclusion and Outlook.
Kurzfassung: This book tries to answer the question “What happens if an AI system makes a mistake while contracting?” by applying an interdisciplinary and comparative legal methodology. It offers a tantalizing glimpse into the intricate web of legal, psychological, and technical phenomena involved, and how they are interconnected within the realm of contractual mistake doctrine as we know it today. It covers a wide range of topics, including the common origins of German and English contract law, the pivotal role of intentions as a prerequisite for effectual contracts in both jurisdictions, the classification of and psychological approach to contractual mistakes, and the complexities of AI’s participation in contract law. Particular attention is paid to the juxtaposition of human- and AI-made mistakes from the perspective of information processing. As a result, the book offers a jurisdiction-agnostic framework for AI-made contractual mistakes that can aid legislators and policymakers in their deliberations on the regulation of AI in contract law. The framework considers cultural and historical differences between German and English contract law, and thus proposes an approach that can fit both (and potentially other similar) jurisdictions with minor adjustments. In addition to these novel discussions, the work explores the views of prominent scholars and international experts in the field. As such, it will appeal to researchers and scholars in the fields of law, technology, psychology, and (especially) Artificial Intelligence. By presenting “a framework for AI-made mistakes in German and English contract law,” Dr. Ismayilzada offers a valuable contribution to the field, inviting readers to explore the uncharted territory of AI and the law. Join the author on this intellectual journey and gain insights that will redefine your perception of contracts in the age of AI.

Kurzfassung: 1. Introduction -- 2. The curious case of the missing social agent in sports economics -- 3. Missing links: towards a theory of social economic agency for sports attendance -- 4. A critical realist-behavioural economics hybrid theory of sports attendance demand: the view from the other side of the dividing line in economics -- 5. Afterword: ways forward.
Kurzfassung: This book provides a new and unique perspective on ideas of demand within sports economics. It reviews the methodologies that underpin the current analysis of the demand for sporting events, highlights their limitations, and proposes ways in which they can be improved. By proposing a new framework that takes approaches from behavioural economics, the sociality of sport demand, and maximization models, an understanding of the demand of sporting events is presented that embraces qualitative and mixed methods. This book offers insight into a key economic idea through the lens of sports economics and the attendance of sporting events. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in sports economics and the political economy of sport. John Embery is a Researcher and Course Director at Leeds Beckett University. .
