    Abstract: Frauen aus Santa Rosa de Sucumbios ernten und verarbeiten Maniokknollen: Abschaben der Schale, Zerreiben der Knollen mit einer aufgespaltenen, dornigen Palmwurzel, Einfüllen des Breies in die aus Baststreifen geflochtene Maniokpresse (Tipiti), Auspressen des giftigen Saftes durch Drehen der Enden der Presse in entgegengesetzter Richtung.
    Abstract: Celila Lucitante and an elderly female relative of hers went over to the Ecuadorian side of the Rio San Miguel to bring back a supply of manioc tubers. They gather a considerable amount and bring them back to the house. The older woman then prepared the manioc, first by scraping away the outer skin with a knife. The woman began grating the manioc tubers then into a wooden vessel using a split, thorny root of a palm as a grater. The poisonous juice from the manioc must now be removed and this is achieved by the two women together (or sometimes by one person on her own) with the aid of the tipiti manioc press. Firstly the poison is removed by both women together operating the tipiti which has previously been filled with the manioc mass, each woman twisting her end of the tipiti in opposite directions, thus extracting the poison. In the second method a woman on her own suspends the tipiti from the rafters of her house and twists it by inserting a pole through its lower "ear". In this way the manioc flour is rendered edible and can be used for baking purposes.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Santa Rosa de Sucumbios gewinnt Bast und flicht damit zunächst in leinwandbindiger, randparalleler Flechttechnik in beiden Richtungen in die Breite und dann diagonal in Längsrichtung eine Maniokpresse, wobei er die Enden zu einer Art Schlauch verengt und die beiden übrigbleibenden Flechtstreifen jeweils zu einer Schlaufe zusammenbindet.
    Abstract: A man, inhabitant of Santa Rosa de Sucumbios, is manufacturing a tipiti. He begins with an excursion over to the Ecuadorian side of Rio San Miguel to locate an appropriate tree from whose bast he will make the instrument. He fells the tree, strips the bark in long strips and then separates the inner bark form the outer bark. It is the inner bark that he will use for the tipiti. He ties the bast into several bundles and carries them home, where he begins to plait a tipiti out of it. He starts by crossing two strands, then adds one more each alongside those first laid out, and then continues thus until the tipiti has several strands across upon which he adds then only to its length. The ends from both sides are narrowed down into a soirt of tube and then tied over to form a loop from which the tipiti will be suspended from the rafters; through the lower loop a stick will also be inserted to enable his female relatives to twist the tipiti and thus to squeeze out the poisonous manioc juice. The female shows the beginning the rectangular then oblique 1/1 plaiting of a tipiti with tubular diagonally braided ends.

    Abstract: Fidel Lucitante, one of the more important inhabitants of Santa Rosa de Sucumbios on Rio San Miguel, a tributary of the Alto Putumayo river in Colombia, needs a supply of yoko stimulant for a long trip down river. Yoko, a liana, is used as a stimulant especially against exhaustion and lack of sleep when the Cofán have a number of long days of hard work ahead of them. On all trips a supply of yoko is carried and it can be prepared during the trip itself. After a fair amount of searching in the forest Fidel locates the hanging vine of Paulinia, which is used for making yoko, and he takes a bundle of it home. Of this bundle, however, he uses only a few long sections. He scrapes the thin bark of the liana into a pile and later mixes the scrapings with water in a tree gourd. The yoko is thus brewed and Fidel tastes it.

Nach dem Trocknen werden die Töpfe im Brennhaufen gebrannt.

    Abstract: Horgario, a middle-aged man and head of household, is making tipiti for his family. He brings bast strips from the house rafter, where they have been drying, into an open space where he begins to work at the future instrument. He begins by crossing at right angles two long bast strips, then adds another strip to each of them, first from one side, then from the other. He does this until it is seven or eight strips wide, after which he continues to weave only lengthwise. He narrows both ends of the tipiti, until only two separate, slender "pig-tails" are left. These he twists over and then ties to form a loop. Through this loop the tipiti will be suspended from the rafter at one and and through the other loop a stick will be inserted by a woman using tipiti to enable her to twist the instrument and extract the venom. As his final task Horgario rolls the instrument up and ties it round with a slender fiber to hold it firmly in place. The tipiti is now ready for use. The film shows the beginning the rectangular then oblique 1/1 plaiting of a tipiti with tubular diagonally braided ends.

    Abstract: The blowgun is being made by Narcisio Lucitante. Narcisio, like many of the Cofán in the area, is an expert in both the use of the blowgun as well as in its manufacture. His first task was to bring in appropriate half sections of wood for the future blowgun and to this end he crossed over to the Ecuadorian side of the river where such trees as used for the weapon have not yet been totally depleted by the Cofán. He chopped down one of them with an axe and thinned it down on the spot into sections which he then brought home. Further work all took place entirely at home. The halves were thinned down and worked over in part on the special wooden platform set near the house for this purpose. The tools consist of a machete, a plane (not always used) and a knife. When both half sections had been smoothed and properly finished they were glued together with tree resin and tied at intervals with slender fiber. After this they are wrapped up in closely spaced bast fiber and finally covered with a layer of heated pith to give the weapon a protective black glaze.

Seine Frau drillt mit einem großen Holzbohrer Löcher in die andere, zum Sieb bestimmte Kürbishälfte.
    Abstract: A man cleans out a gourd from the Crescentia cujete tree and having done so gives it to his daughter-in-law, who decorates it. For this she uses a knife and with its tip she carves out designs on the outer surface of the gourd, first decorating the outer rim and later carving out zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures on the remaining surface. The figures are scattered throughout. Following this her mother-in-law decides to prepare another gourd, which will be used as a chicha strainer. This she accomplishes with a special large wooden drill (with a nail forming its metal tip) by drilling holes in its surface. The strainer will be used to strain chicha, fresh unfermented juice of corn. The decorated gourds on the other hand will be used for the ceremonial drinking of huarapo, the fermented drink.

Dort wird das Zuckerrohr von mehreren Frauen durch eine Zuckerrohrpresse gedreht. Der Zuckerrohrsaft wird in einem Holzgefäß gesammelt. Ein Mädchen trinkt von dem Saft.
    Abstract: A small group of Noanamá made up of a young woman and two children go out in a canoe to find some sugar cane from which to make fresh sugar cane juice. They cut come sugar can, bring it home and there it is out through the sugar cane press called trapiche. In this work several women are involved, either operating the machine or feeding the sugar cane stalks into it. The sugar cane juice drips and collects in a wooden dish underneath, specially brought in for this purpose. When enough has been obtained a small girl picks up a gourd and dips it into the vessel to drink the fresh juice.

    Abstract: A young woman makes a comman ornament for men. She files and cleans a good supply of old peccary teeth on a grinding stone until they become white and once they are thus cleaned she drills holes through the teeth with a knife. Through these holes she will then string Mauritia palm fiber. She begins to string the teeth, alternating them with one or two glass beads for decoration and as a final touch to the finished necklace she attaches coloured cotton bands to the rear strings to form long, flowing tassels. The necklace is decorative but usually associated with Cofán ceremonies, especially the drinking of yahe.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Quebrada Taparral sammelt Lianenranken. Seine Schwiegertochter entfernt deren Rinde, spleißt die Lianen der Länge nach und schabt sie mit der Machete dünn und geschmeidig, flicht ein vierteiliges Diagnonalgeflecht in 3/3 Köperbindung und macht aus den offengelassenen unteren Enden den Fächergriff.
    Abstract: A man, called Marcellino, gathers some hanging vines in the forest in order to have them made into a fire fan by this daughter-in-law. She first strips the bark of the lianas Marcellino had collected and then smooths them over and thins them down with a machete before beginning to plait the fire fan. She starts by crossing a few strands and then adds more and more horizontally and vertically, leaving open loose ends in the lower half from which she will later make the handle for the fire fan. The film shows an oblique 3/3 twill plaiting made in 4 sections.

    Abstract: Zwei Männer aus Quebrada Taparral fällen einen Baum, hacken ein Stück heraus und tragen es nach Hause. Sie schlagen den Stamm, lösen die Rinde und trennen die Borke von der weißen Bastschicht, die sie mit einem Schlegel auf einem Holzblock klopfen, in einem wassergefüllten Kanu waschen und treten, dann auswringen, ausbreiten, säubern und trocknen lassen.
    Abstract: Two men are making bark cloth which will be used later for sleeping on. After the swarch for an appropriate tree, which they located up a steep slope some considerale distance away from the setttement, the tree is felled and a log of suitable size is cut and brought back to the house. The two men then pound the log with crude, short limbs of a tree in order to loosen the bark on the log. They then make incisions along the centre of the lengthwise, and around the log near its ends, and in this way they can separate the bark from the tree. After this has been done the outer bark is separated from the inner bark, which is whitish in colour, an the inner bark is pounded over a diagonally placed log by both men using a special heavy mallet with an incised inner surface. This pounding quite a long time. When it is completed the bark a laid in a submerged canoe, washed in the water and trodden on by the men`s feet. After this washing both men squeeze out the water from the bark, twisting the ends of the bark in opposite directions. The bark, now pounded and washed, is then stretsched out on grassy ground to dry in the sun, the rough spots having been carefully removed. The bark eloth is now completed.

    Abstract: A man from Santa Rosa de Sucumbios on Rio San Miguel in Alto Putumayo is making a spear. He first goes into the forest over the Ecuadorian side of the river to cut down an appropriate tree (a species of palm tree) for the spear shaft. He brings this home and begins to work it into proper shape by thinning it down with a machete. Once this is accomplished he picks out a loose, dried bamboo stem, lying in the clearing near the house. This he slices lengthwise in two and shapes it into the desired form with a machete. He then twists a length of the Mauritia palm fiber into slender string with which he will tie the spear bamboo head to the shaft. Following this he slightly heats a chunk of beeswax with which he attaches the bamboo spear head with the string fiber he has just made.

Die Bastschicht rollen sie zusammen und legen sie zu Hause über Nacht in Wasser. Dann klopfen sie den Rindenbast mit einem schweren Holzschlegel, waschen ihn und wringen ihn aus, bevor sie ihn trocknen lassen.
    Abstract: Celestino, a Tucana man, together with a companion makes a large bark cloth for his household. They select a suitable tree in the forest, cut it down and then pound the log out of it in order to loosen the bark. This pounding is mainly done with a machete. Then they strip away the bark and spread it on the ground, where they proceed to separate, with a machete, the inner bark from the outer bark. They roll the inner bark into a bundle and take it home. Here they keep it in water overnight before pounding it again with a special, crude mallet made of heavy wood, for this purpose. Finally they squeeze the water out from the bark cloth by twisting it hard at both ends, before spreading it out once more on the ground, removing the rough bits and leaving it to dry. The tururi is thus complete.

    Abstract: An old woman mixes clay with crushed charcoal made from bark, she forms a flat bottom and coils the sides, which are smoothed by hand and using the fruit of a tree. After pitfiring she coats the still warm pots with copal (resin) and paints a zig-zag decoration.

    Abstract: A man makes the bow and first he has to pick out in the forest a thin branch from an unspecified tree to act as the bow stave. He makes the bow string from the Bromelia leaf by first separating the inner fiber with a bamboo stick. The Bromelia strands he twists over to make a thin string. He then ties the twisted string to the stave and begin to play by holding one end of the bow in his mouth and touching the string with one finger.

    Abstract: Ein Mann und sein Sohn aus Quebrada Taparral holen Früchte von Borojoa patinoi aus dem Wald. Seine Frau halbiert die Früchte, schabt das Fruchtfleisch aus, füllt es in eine Kalebasse und erhitzt diese, wobei die weiß-rosa Masse schwarz wird. Sie malt damit mit Hilfe von zwei- oder dreizackigen Stäbchen gerade und geschwungene Linien und Punkte auf den Körper ihrer Tochter.
    Abstract: A man and his son bring in the river fruits of Borojoa patinoi from the forest and this fruit will be used for preparing a black-bluish dye. His wife will prepare this dye. She slices the fruit with a machete and extracts the interior mass and fills an old Crescentia cujete gourd with it. She slightly heats this gourd with the fruit over a fire-place and as result of this the content, orginally pinkish-white, turns black. With this dye the women later paints her daughter. To apply the dye to the body she uses special traditional sticks, two- or three-pronged, and with these she sketches out designs, mostly linear and straight, but also a few curving lines on the girl's back, chest, arms, face, and nose. The girl herself also helps in this, painting some of the designs. The paint, which is applied largely for festivities or visits, lasts several days.

Die Maismasse schüttet sie in ein Kalebassensieb auf einem Holzgestell, feuchtet sie an und preßt sie mit der Hand, bis sich im darunterstehenden Holzgefäß genügend milchiger Maissaft angesammelt hat, der mit Kalebassenschalen geschöpft und getrunken wird.
    Abstract: A middle-aged woman is preparing chicha, an unfermented drink made from maize. The preparation takes places inside the house. For this she had brought a large supply of corn over from her chacre (cultivated field) and then had boiled this corn for almost a day before leaving it to set in a bowl. Now she brings in an ablong, rounded, wooden dish and a special wooden platform with a large opening in it in which a perforated gourd dish will be placed. She also brings in a shapeless metate (grinding stone) and a stone mano. With this mano she proceeds to crush the corn seeds, already softened by boiling. The resulting mass she repeatedly tosses into the gourd strainer set in the opening of the wooden platform which in turn is placed cross-wise over the wooden dish. With her hands she strains the corn mass through the strainer extracting fresh, milky corn juice which drips into the wooden dish underneath. When enough has fallen into the wooden dish members of the family scoop it up with unperforated half gourds and drink it.
