    Abstract: Abwechselnd heben vier Männer auf einem Friedhof für einen noch Lebenden eine zylindrische Grabkammer mit schlotartigem Einstiegsschacht aus. Jeweils einer von ihnen gräbt unten die Erde mit einem Spaten auf und reicht sie in einer Kalebasse nach oben. Nach Abschluß des Ausschachtens wird die Graböffnung mit einer Steinplatte abgedeckt und die ausgehobene Erde darübergehäuft.
    Abstract: On a cemetery four men alternately excavate a cylindrical grave chamber at the bottom of a funnel-shaped shaft for the burial of a still-living person. One at a time digs up the ground with a spade and passes the earth upwards in a gourd. Finally the opening of the grave is covered with a slab of stone and the removed earth is heaped on it.

    Abstract: Zwei Tage vor dem Dreschen wird der Dreschplatz mit einer Masse aus Kuhmist und Wasser gestrichen. Die in die Mitte des Platzes geschütteten Durrarispen werden von 15 Männern mit Dreschhölzern in mehreren Dreschgängen entkörnt, und die Körner werden zu einem Haufen zusammengeschaufelt. Anschließend reinigen Frauen die Körner durch mehrfaches Worfeln. Das gereinigte Korn wird wieder aufgehäuft und mit Symbolen wie Dreschholz, Holzgabel sowie einem grünen und einem trockenen Zweig bestückt, die den Wunsch nach einer guten Ernte ausdrücken.
    Abstract: The surface of the threshing ground is covered with a layer of cow dung mixed with water and left to dry. Panicles of millet are then threshed on the place by a group of men, who from time to time interrupt their work and drink merisa (millet beer). After repeated threshing the millet is repeatedly winnowed by the women and formed into a heap. Flail, wooden fork and branches placed in the centre of the millet heap symbolize the wish for a good next harvest.

    Abstract: Ein neunköpfiger Männerchor, begleitet von zwei Hornbläsern, geht zu einer Stelle nahe dem Dorf, um eine Darbietung zu geben, wie es bei Ringerfesten und bei anderen zeremoniellen Anlässen der Fall ist. Zunächst tritt ein Vorsänger auf, ihm antwortet der Chor, und dann blasen die Hornbläser einzeln oder zusammen. Singen und Blasen wechseln sich mehrmals ab.

    Abstract: Sechs Männer ernten gemeinsam ein Durrafeld ab, indem sie die über 2 m hohen Stengel zu sich herabbiegen, die Rispen mit ihren Messern vom Halm schneiden und in Körbe legen. Die Körbe werden von Frauen zu dem ca. 4 km entfernten Stapelplatz gebracht, wo die Rispen vom Besitzer auf quadratischen Gestellen zum Trocknen aufgeschichtet werden. Zwischendurch erhalten die Arbeitenden vom Besitzer Merisa-Bier.
    Abstract: A team of reapers harvest the crop of a millet-field, assembling the cut millet panicles in a heap in the field. Women then carry the millet panicles in baskets to a place where the owner of the crop piles them carefully on square frames to dry. From time to time the owner offers merisa (millet beer) to the workers.

    Abstract: Auf dem gesäuberten Dreschplatz schütten Frauen Körbe mit Durrarispen aus und entkörnen sie mit Dreschhölzern. Anschließend werden die Körner durch mehrmaliges Worfeln von der Spreu gereinigt. Die endgültige Trennung der Körner von der Spreu wird durch Schütteln in einer Kalebasse erreicht. Das gereinigte Korn wird in die Körbe der Frauen verteilt.
    Abstract: Women empty baskets of millet panicles on the cleaned threshing ground and beat out the grain with flails. The grain is then separated from the chaff by repeated winnowing, the rest of the chaff is fanned away by shaking in a gourd. The cleaned grain is divided among the women and poured into their baskets.

    Abstract: In der Trockenzeit ziehen die jungen, unverheirateten Männer mit den Rindern mehrerer Familien in eine futter- und wasserreiche Gegend und errichten dort ein Viehlager. Für die Nacht werden die Tiere im Lager angepflockt. Morgens und abends werden die Kühe gemolken, tagsüber zieht das Großvieh hinaus in die umliegenden Weidegebiete. Die getrockneten Kuhfladen werden als Brennmaterial für die nächtlichen Feuer gesammelt.
    Abstract: During the dry season young unmarried men drive the cattle of different families to a region where there is more grass and water and build up a cattle camp. During the night the cattle are tied up in the camp. In the morning and in the evening the cows are milked, in the day-time the big cattle go out to the neighbouring grazing grounds. The dried cow-droppings are collected and used as fuel for the nightly fire.

    Abstract: Ein Junge formt aus dem mit Wasser versetzten, tonigen Material eines Termitenhügels in Spiralwulsttechnik eine kleine Kugelflöte. Der obere Rand wird ein wenig nach innen eingedrückt, so daß die Öffnung kleiner wird. Mit einem starken Halm bohrt er 2 cm unterhalb der Öffnung zwei kleine Löcher in den Tonkörper im Abstand von etwa 2 cm zueinander und probiert sein Instrument aus.

    Abstract: Frisch gesammelte Kuhfladen werden durchgeknetet und zu einer Kugel geformt. Die Masse wird über der Wölbung eines umgekehrten und mit Asche eingestäubten Tonkruges auf eine gleichmäßig dünne Wandstärke gebracht und mit den Händen glattgestrichen. Nach mehrtägigem Trocknen wird dieser Schalenanfang von der Form gelöst und durch aufgesetzte Wülste vergrößert. Schließlich wird eine einfache Randverzierung angebracht.
    Abstract: Inside a farmyard cow dung is collected, kneaded and worked into a spherical shape. The mass, placed over the top of an inverted clay jug surfaced with ash, is given an even thickness and smoothed out by hand. After drying for several days this rudimentary vessel is removed from its mould and enlarged by the addition of wads. Finally, the rim is decorated in a simple manner.

    Abstract: Auf dem Oberarm und der Schulter junger Mädchen und eines jungen Mannes werden in parallelen Reihen punktförmige Narben angebracht. Mit einem Dorn wird die Haut angehoben und mit einem spachtelförmigen Messer sichelförmig eingeschnitten. Ferner werden mit einem Glassplitter strichförmige Narben auf dem Bauch einer erstmalig Schwangeren erzeugt. Die Wunden werden mit Speichel und Sesamöl abgerieben.

    Abstract: Ein Sandalenmacher weicht ein Stück Rinderhaut in Wasser ein und vergräbt sie über Nacht in der Erde. Am nächsten Tag klopft er sie mit einem Stein aus, zerschneidet sie in zwei Sohlenstücke und zwei lange Riemen. Unter häufigem Maßnehmen an den eigenen Füßen fertigt er die Sandalen an, indem er den Riemen durch die Seitenteile und die Spitze des Sohlenstückes zieht. Die Außenseite der Rinderhaut bildet das Innere der Sandalen.
    Abstract: A sandal maker soaks a piece of neat's skin in water and buries it overnight in the ground. The next day he pounds it with a stone, cuts out two soles and two long thongs and, taking his own feet's measurements, attaches the thongs to the soles.

    Abstract: In dem Innenhof ihres Gehöftes bereitet eine Frau für ihre fünfköpfige Familie die tägliche Mahlzeit zu, die aus Hirsebrei und einer Soße aus Tamarindus indica und Hibiscus esculentus besteht. Sie teilt die Speise für die einzelnen Familienmitglieder in Kalebassenschalen auf. Die gekochte Menge reicht für einen Tag. Ihre beiden größeren Kinder beginnen gleich mit dem Essen.
    Abstract: In the courtyard of her homestead a woman prepares the daily meal for her five-headed family, millet porridge with a sauce. She first grinds millet, puts a pot water on the fire, mixes the millet flour in the boiling water and stirs the porridge carefully with a twirling-stick. In a smaller pot she then prepares a sauce of different fruits, stirs it, adds salt, and removes the uneatable stones of the fruits. She then portions out the porridge and the sauce in different half gourds for the children, her husband, and herself. The two elder children begin immediately to eat, the other bowls are put aside for the present on a store-rack.

    Abstract: Das aus einem Termitenbau stammende Tonmaterial wird von zwei Frauen gemahlen und mit Wasser angemischt. In einer kleinen Bodenmulde formt jede Töpferin eine Grundschale, auf die konzentrische Tonwülste nacheinander aufgesetzt und in der Kuhle dünngeklopft werden. Nach dem Trocknen der so geformten Krüge werden sie, mit getrockneten Kuhfladen bedeckt, in einer Grube gebrannt.
    Abstract: Clay from a termite-hill is ground by two women and mixed with water. In a small ground-trough each of the women potters forms a basic vessel shape onto which concentric clay wads are placed one after another and, in the trough, are beaten out. Once they have been shaped in this way and allowed to dry, the jugs are covered with dried cow's dung and fired.

Mit einem Stein klopft sie die Rindenbastschicht vom Holz ab, entfernt die äußere Rinde und schneidet mit einem scharfen Stein die Baststücke zu zwei Durchziehschurzen zurecht, die sie anschließend anprobiert. Sie zieht sie nacheinander von hinten zwischen den Beinen durch und verknüpft sie vorn und hinten mit der Perlenkette, die sie um die Hüften trägt.

    Abstract: Ein ausgesuchter Baum wird gefällt, ein Stück Rohmaterial abgelängt und abgetrennt. Für die Maskenfigur wird Maß genommen und danach die Maske aus dem vollen Werkstück herausgeschnitzt. Nach dem Anbringen aller Ornamente werden die Augen vorgezeichnet und ausgehoben. Anschließend wird das Kopfloch für den Maskenträger ausgehöhlt, die Maske durch Brennen geschwärzt und mit Palmöl eingerieben.

    Abstract: Tonmaterial wird aus einer Grube gewonnen, gemergelt, geknetet und in Ringwulsttechnik zu einem bauchigen Gefäß mit Hals aufgebaut. Als Arbeitsunterlage dient eine konkave Tonscherbe, die während des Töpferns gedreht werden kann. Ornamentiert wird der Hals des Gefäßes mit einem dünnen Wulstring sowie der Bauch in rautenförmigen, gepunkteten Feldern. Das Brennen erfolgt nach längerem Lufttrocknen in einem Brennhaufen.
    Abstract: Clay is fetched from a clay pit, tempered and kneaded and a bellied vessel with rim is built up by the coiling method. The work is done on a concave potsherd to rotate the vessel as it is shaped. The rim of the vessel is decorated with a thin roll of clay, the belly with points arranged in diamondshaped figures. After the pot has been dried for some time in the air, it is baked with other pots in a stack.

    Abstract: In the court of a homestead Baga children play on the sand the mancala game, using kernels as pieces. They put different pieces in small holes in the ground and then take out more or less of them, according to the rules of the game.

    Abstract: Mädchen und Frauen eines Küstendorfes stehen in einer Reihe quer durch eine Lagune. Je zwei sind einander zugewandt und halten ein Handnetz mit Rahmenstangen. Sie tauchen die Netze in die auflaufende Flut und heben sie dann wieder heraus. Die Fische werden mit einer Kalebassenschale aus den Netzen geschöpft und in einen Tragkorb auf dem Rücken geworfen. Mit steigender Flut wird der Riegel immer weiter stromaufwärts verlegt.
    Abstract: Women and girls of sea-side village are fishing in the lagoon with hand-nets attached to frames. The caught fish are taken out of the nets with a gourd and thrown into a basket carried on the back.

    Abstract: Ein zweiteiliger Korb wird in Ringwulsttechnik geflochten. Oberteil ist der zu Korbgröße verlängerte Deckel. Flechtmaterial sind Halme eines langen, harten Grases sowie Blattrippen der Ölpalme. Aus den Fasern eines langstengeligen, gertenförmigen Gewächses werden die Schnüre zum Vernähen, Verzieren und Verschnüren der nach oben verjüngten Korbteile gewonnen.
    Abstract: A storage basket for rice, composed of two parts, is made by the coiling method. The lid covering the basket is built up, too, to the size of a basket. The materials used are the blades of a long, rigid grass and the ribs of oil-palm leaves. The parts of the basket are sewn together, decorated and tied up with cords obtained from the fibres of a stalky, flexible plant.

    Abstract: Zwei Kinder unterhalten sich, indem sie Löcher in den Sandboden scharren, diese Löcher wieder zuwerfen, wobei in eines der Löcher unbemerkt ein kleiner Fruchtkern mitgeworfen wird. Der Gegenspieler muß den Kern finden, sonst wird ihm ein Loch gelöscht. Findet er ihn, so darf er den Kern seinerseits verstecken. Es gewinnt, wer dem Gegenspieler alle Löcher auslöschen kann.
    Abstract: Two children make a number of holes in the ground; filling up the holes, one of the children hides in one of the holes a small fruit kernel. The opponent how has to find the kernel, otherwise he has to give up one of his holes. If he has found the kernel, it is his turn to hide it. The one is the looser who has lost all his holes.
