Abstract: To meet the critical needs of modern business, software must now be able to react quickly to changes, allowing new features to be conceived, developed, and put into production rapidly. This requirement to respond fluently to changes has an important impact upon the architecture of a software system: software has to be built in such a way that it’s able to adapt to unexpected changes in features and can be regularly revised and refactored to meet a product’s goals. Join us for a special conversation with Neal Ford and software development thought leader and ThoughtWorks chief scientist Martin Fowler. They’ll explore the interplay between the shift toward Agile thinking and the technical patterns and practices that make Agile software development practical. While the specifics of technology can change rapidly, the fundamental best practices and patterns you’ll learn are more stable and will allow you to respond more fluently to changes. Neal and Martin spend a few minutes covering the trends in software architecture that are driving the need for change, then tell you what you need to know to stay ahead of the curve. What you’ll learn and how you can apply it Learn how to make Agile software development practical See what’s coming next with software architecture This recording of a live event is for you because… You want to better understand what you can do to improve your software architecture. You want to discover ways to adapt to unexpected changes in features. Abstract: Just as developers use design patterns in software development, architects use architecture patterns to define the characteristics and shape of the architecture of a system. Using the right architecture pattern is critical because once in place the architecture is very hard to change. Using the wrong architecture pattern (or no pattern at all) can be a very costly mistake, resulting in an architecture that may not work. But how do you decide which pattern to use? Join us for four hours of sessions on some of the most popular and useful architectural patterns and how to implement them at your organization. About the Software Architecture Superstream Series: This five-part series of half-day online events focuses on the hottest topics in software architecture, giving you the insights to keep pace with what’s next while still accommodating legacy needs. Both seasoned software architects and those looking to break into the field will learn new skills and the latest information on the tools and technologies they need to succeed. What you’ll learn and how you can apply it Understand the similarities and differences between architecture patterns and design patterns Learn how to use patterns in microservices-style architectures Get a glimpse of the future of event-driven architectures and patterns This live event is for you because… You're a senior-level developer who wants to make the move to architect. You're a practicing software architect who wants to hone your skills and learn new software architecture techniques and practices. Abstract: Software architecture metrics are used to measure the maintainability, architectural quality of a software project and to warn early in the process about dangerous accumulations of architectural and technical debt. In this book leading hands-on software architects introduce some key software architecture metrics through case studies, that every software architect should know. This book is not about theory, it is more about practice and implementation, about what has been already tried and worked. Early detection of software architectural issues is key. It helps mitigate the risk of poor performance, and lowers the cost of repairing these issues.

Abstract: There’s one activity that will move your architecture modernization needle more than any other: make the right thing to do the easiest thing to do. So how do you actually do it? Should applications only use approved programming languages? Ensure those languages have a paved road from commit to prod. Should applications only use approved frameworks and libraries? Create automated templates for starting new projects with those frameworks and libraries. Should developers only use the latest versions of approved tools, plug-ins, etc.? Make installing those tools easy, make upgrading those tools automatic. Should developers only leverage specific patterns and shared services? Make learning and using these patterns discoverable, easy, and authoritative. These are only a few examples. But once you start thinking this way, the list of high-value improvements you can start tomorrow writes itself. Join us for a special conversation with Neal Ford and longtime enterprise IT veteran Matt Stine to explore the highest-leverage work you can do to improve your enterprise software architecture. This is a chance for you to ask Neal and Matt anything you want about architecture and their own career journeys. Abstract: The software ecosystem changes chaotically: one small change causes another; when repeated hundreds of times, it generates a new ecosystem. In fact we must question fundamental axioms on a regular basis, in light of improved engineering practices, operational ecosystems, software development processes—everything that makes up the messy, dynamic equilibrium where architects and developers work each day. Careful observers of software architecture over time have witnessed a slow evolution of capabilities. From the engineer practices of extreme programming to continuous delivery, the DevOps revolution, microservices, containerization, and now cloud-based resources, all of these innovations have led to new capabilities and trade-offs. Expert Neal Ford looks at software architecture in a modern light, taking into account all the innovations from the last decade, along with some new metrics and measures suited to the new structures and perspectives now available. Recorded on February 19, 2020. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events . O'Reilly Meet the Expert explores emerging business and technology topics and ideas through a series of one-hour interactive events. Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication is a detailed technical guide to the IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller (SVC), which is powered by IBM Spectrum™ Virtualize V8.2.1. IBM SAN Volume Controller is a virtualization appliance solution that maps virtualized volumes that are visible to hosts and applications to physical volumes on storage devices. Each server within the storage area network (SAN) has its own set of virtual storage addresses that are mapped to physical addresses. If the physical addresses change, the server continues running by using the same virtual addresses that it had before. Therefore, volumes or storage can be added or moved while the server is still running. The IBM virtualization technology improves the management of information at the block level in a network, which enables applications and servers to share storage devices on a network.

Abstract: The use of N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) to provide host-only ports (NPIV target ports) and spare nodes improves the host failover characteristics by separating out host communications from communication tasks on the same port and providing standby hardware, which can be automatically introduced into the cluster to reintroduce redundancy. Because the host ports are not used for internode communications, they can freely move between nodes, and this includes spare nodes that are added to the cluster automatically. This IBM® Redpaper™ publication describes the use of the IBM Spectrum™ Virtualize Hot-Spare Node function to provide a high availability storage infrastructure. This paper focuses on the functional behavior of hot-spare node when subjected to various failure conditions. This paper does not provide the details necessary to implement the reference architectures (although some implementation detail is provided).

Abstract: Przez długi czas uważano, że architektura oprogramowania powinna powstać przed rozpoczęciem pisania kodu i pozostać niezmieniona aż do zakończenia projektu. Pokazano metody monitorowania stanu architektury. Sporo uwagi poświęcono problemom danych długowiecznych - jest to często pomijane zagadnienie. W tej książce: Funkcje dopasowania w architekturze Zmiany przyrostowe wprowadzane za pomocą projektowania i operacji Sprzężenie architektury i wprowadzanie zmian bez utraty stabilności systemu Dane ewolucyjne oraz zmiany wymogów i architektury w miarę upływu czasu Budowanie architektur ewolucyjnych Praktyczne wdrażanie architektury ewolucyjnej w korporacji Architektura korporacyjna: wysoka sztuka projektowania!

Abstract: IBM® Real-time Compression™ software that is embedded in IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and IBM Storwize® V7000 solution addresses all the requirements of primary storage data reduction, including performance, by using a purpose-built technology called . This IBM Redpaper™ publication addresses the key requirements for primary storage data reduction and gives real world examples of savings that can be made by using compression. SVC and Storwize V7000 is designed to improve storage efficiency by compressing data by as much as 80% through supported real-time compression for block storage. This process enables up to five times as much data to be stored in the same physical disk space. Unlike other approaches to compression, IBM Real-time Compression is used with active primary data, such as production databases and email systems. This configuration dramatically expands the range of candidate data that can benefit from compression. As its name implies, IBM Real-time Compression operates as data is written to disk, avoiding the need to store data that is awaiting compression.

Abstract: Data is the new currency of business, the most critical asset of the modern organization. In fact, enterprises that can gain business insights from their data are twice as likely to outperform their competitors; yet, 72 percent of them have not started or are only planning big data activities. In addition, organizations often spend too much money and time managing where their data is stored. The average firm purchases 24% more storage every year, but uses less than half of the capacity it already has. A member of the IBM® Storwize® family, IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Data Platform is a storage virtualization system that enables a single point of control for storage resources to help support improved business application availability and greater resource utilization. The objective is to manage storage resources in your IT infrastructure and to make sure they are used to the advantage of your business, and do it quickly, efficiently, and in real time, while avoiding increases in administrative costs. Virtualizing storage with SVC Data Platform helps make new and existing storage more effective. SVC Data Platform includes many functions traditionally deployed separately in disk systems. By including these in a virtualization system, SVC Data Platform standardizes functions across virtualized storage for greater flexibility and potentially lower costs. SVC Data Platform functions benefit all virtualized storage. For example, IBM Easy Tier® optimizes use of flash storage. And IBM Real-time Compression™ enhances efficiency even further by enabling the storage of up to five times as much active primary data in the same physical disk space. Finally, high-performance thin provisioning helps automate provisioning. These benefits can help extend the useful life of existing storage assets, reducing costs. Integrating these functions into SVC Data Platform also means that they are designed to operate smoothly together, reducing management effort. In this IBM Redbooks® publication, we discuss the latest features and functions of the SVC 2145-DH8 and software version 7.3, implementation, architectural improvements, and Easy Tier.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication supersedes both: IBM TotalStorage: Introduction to SAN Routing, SG24-7119-00 Implementing the IBM TotalStorage Multiprotocol Routers, SG24-7246-00 The rapid spread and adoption of production storage area networks (SANs) has fuelled the need for multiprotocol routers. The routers provide improved scalability, security, and manageability by enabling devices in separate SAN fabrics to communicate without merging fabrics into a single, large SAN fabric. This capability enables clients to initially deploy separate SAN solutions at the departmental and data center levels. Then, clients can consolidate these separate solutions into large enterprise SAN solutions as their experience and requirements grow and change. Alternatively, multiprotocol routers can help to connect existing enterprise SANs for a variety of reasons. For instance, the introduction of Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI) provides for the connection of low-end, low-cost hosts to enterprise SANs. The use of an Internet Protocol (IP) in the Fibre Channel (FC) environment provides for resource consolidation and disaster recovery planning over long distances. And the use of FC-FC routing services provides connectivity between two or more fabrics without having to merge them into a single SAN. Abstract: In this IBM Redbooks publication, we visit some of the core components and technologies that underpin a storage area network (SAN). We cover some of the latest additions to the IBM SAN portfolio, discuss general SAN design considerations, and build these considerations into a selection of real-world case studies. We realize that there are many ways to design a SAN and put all the components together. In our examples, we have incorporated the major considerations that you need to think about, but still left room to maneuver on the SAN field of play. This book focuses on the SAN products that are generally considered to form the backbone of the SAN fabric today: switches and directors. With this backbone, development has prompted discrete approaches to the design of a SAN fabric. The bespoke vendor implementation of technology that is characteristic in the design footprint of switches and directors means that we have an opportunity to answer challenges in different ways. We will show examples where strength can be built into the SAN using the network and the features of the components themselves. Our aim is to show that you can customize your SAN fabric according to your preferences.
