Abstract: This volume presents geographical journeys that challenge the limits of national or cultural identities, as well as journeys traversed by stories of exile and forced displacement, which become pilgrimages towards themselves, defying, in this process, both the limits of their own identities and the borders between the self and the other. The volume is divided into three parts. The first part explores the circulation of writers and texts which have traveling as a common point of departure; the second part is dedicated to reflecting on the concept of Orientalism from multiple perspectives but preserving the perpetuation of colonial structures of subordination and otherization as a central axis around which all the proposed analyses revolve; the third part is dedicated to the formulation of new cultural patterns and identities in the Philippines, as results of the interactions and interconnectivities between Wests (Spain, United States) and Philippines. Emmanuelle Sinardet is professor for Latin American Studies in University Paris Nanterre, France, where she teaches Latin American economic, political and cultural history. Ana María Ramírez Gómez currently works as a doctoral research fellow in the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European languages at the University of Oslo, Norway.

Abstract: This book examines the intersection between Indian cinema (across geographic regions, languages and formats) and human rights. It analyzes Indian cinema from multiple human rights perspectives, such as freedom of expression and censorship, socio-economic rights, caste rights, women's and children's rights and LGBTQIA+ equality. The book bridges human rights law and cinema studies, and opens up new research areas within sociocultural and socio-legal academic contexts. It also contributes to academic disicplines beyond Law and Cinema, including Media, Cultural, Gender, Socio-economic and Sociology studies and is relevant for Liberal Arts curricula, Law Schools and as a reference book in university libraries in India and internationally, especially in film institutes. Finally, the book offers practical implications for human rights activists and policymakers by exploring how rights can be advanced through cinema and pop culture.

Abstract: The identity of Taiwan is a matter of intense local and international debate. This book shows how engineers helped produce two distinct visions of the land of Taiwan and its people, elevating the value of engineering as a career path in the process. The book describes how the technical work of engineers, which typically avoids partisan politics, can actually contribute to partisan differences and conflict. In most countries, the rise of engineering is about the emergence of a single dominant vision of the country. In Taiwan, two distinct visions of the land and its people emerged, owing to the presence of two distinct geographical identities-islanders and mainlanders. The distributed mode of production in the electronics industry proved to be transformative and created an "abnormal boys' club" of engineers, as one group called themselves. Because the two communities were influenced by contrasting geographical identities, they felt as though they were working for different Taiwans. "What a book. Engineers and the Two Taiwans traces how engineers creatively crafted professional identities and pathways in the cracks of multiple, shifting empires - and in so doing helped create Taiwan as a thing-unto-itself. In showing how engineers shaped and were shaped by geopolitics and the birth of a new electronics industry, the book opens up fresh perspectives on longstanding questions about who engineers are, how they are trained, where they ought to work, and ultimately what engineering is for. These engineers did politics through their material commitments even as they avoided partisan politics." Jessica M. Smith, Editor-in-chief, Engineering Studies, Professor, Engineering, Design, and Society Department, Colorado School of Mines "This book explores Taiwan's dynamic industrial evolution over the past century through the lens of different engineers' social dynamics, identity, values, and compelling narratives. It offers insights into Taiwanese own perceptions in the electronics industry and prompts reflection on how countries navigate domestic and international technology policies and social progress. You will come to appreciate how engineers in Taiwan today bear continuing responsibilities to connect their technical work to its land and people, even when their own commitments differ from one another." Abstract: Landschaft erscheint stabil und beständig. Was ist daraus geworden? Aber will man? Bedingt.

Abstract: This open access book studies disability inclusion in humanitarian crises. It addresses the challenges of recognizing and including persons with disabilities and indicates the degree to which disability is being mainstreamed in international law and humanitarian action. Further, it explores how international organizations have promoted a rights-based understanding of disability in international law, and to what extent this understanding has gained acceptance in humanitarian policy and practice. Theoretically, Funke and Dijkzeul explore the robustness of the disability inclusion norm cluster during processes of institutionalization, translation, and implementation. The book examines these processes from a multi-level perspective, which involves a variety of actors beyond states, including organizations of persons with disabilities. Situating their analysis within the literature on humanitarian action and development, the authors argue for an increased focus on processes "below" the international level in international relations and international law scholarship to better understand disability inclusion. Carolin Funke is an expert in disability inclusion and internal displacement. She currently works at TU Dortmund University and is research affiliate at the Refugee Law Initiative, University of London. Before, she was postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict at Ruhr University Bochum and research fellow at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Leiden University. She has conducted extensive field research in Georgia and Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Her latest book "Durable Solutions: Challenges with Implementing Global Norms for Internally Displaced Persons in Georgia" was published in 2022. Dennis Dijkzeul is Professor of conflict and organization research at Ruhr University Bochum. He was the founding director of the Humanitarian Affairs Program at Columbia University in New York. He has conducted research on international and local organizations in the United States, Europe, DR Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, and Afghanistan. His latest books are "Diaspora Organizations in International Affairs" (2020, with Margit Fauser), and "International Organizations Revisited: Agency and Pathology in a Multipolar World" (2021, with Dirk Salomons).

Abstract: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th Annual Privacy Forum on Privacy Technologies and Policy, APF 2024, held in Karlstad, Sweden, during September 4-5, 2024. The 12 full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 60 submissions. This conference was established as an opportunity to bring together key communities, namely policy, academia, and industry, in the broader area of privacy and data protection while focusing on privacy-related application areas. Like in the previous edition, a large focus of the 2024 conference was on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the emerging legislation around the European Data Spaces and Arti cial Intelligence. The author maps three defense engagement activities: military exercises, capacity building, and defense equipment transfer and technology cooperation - and subsequently evaluates these against the three national security objectives: deterrence, cooperative security, and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision. The book asks two important research questions: why is Japan active in defense engagement with the armed forces of its strategic partners? And, what purposes do Japan's self-defense forces pursue? Through the ten carefully selected cases of strategic partners: Australia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, ASEAN, the UK, France, NATO, and the EU, the book follows a structured, cross-case comparison based on the analytical framework developed for the research. It also discusses the evolution of Japan's postwar defense policy, providing a solid background for the case studies. The book overall argues that, while the Japan-US alliance is still the most indispensable, Japan's strategic partnerships are a valuable instrument of deterrence that contributes to Japan's national security objectives. In order to more effectively pursue these objectives and thus secure the national interest, Japan must pursue a purpose-driven defense engagement.

Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive explanation of rainfed farming, dryland agriculture, and watershed management concepts. Despite utilizing all available water resources for irrigation, approximately half of the cultivated land will still rely on rainfall. With limited scope for expanding cultivated areas, meeting future food demands becomes an immense challenge. It is within this context that the significance of dryland agriculture emerges. Indian agriculture relies heavily on the monsoon, making water crucial for sustainable development. Unequal distribution of the global average rainfall (about 1000 mm) contributes to disparities in agriculture and socio-economic conditions. Around 70% of India's agriculture depends on rainfall, producing nearly 44% of the food and supporting 40% of the human and 60% of the livestock population. Even with full irrigation potential, half of cultivated land still relies on rain. Approximately 30% of the country is prone to drought and water scarcity, posing challenges for rainfed agriculture. Inefficient water use affects other inputs, emphasizing the need for resource management and indigenous systems. This book serves as a valuable resource for farmers, students, and scholars by providing guidance on various aspects of rainfed agriculture, dryland farming, and watershed resource management techniques. It aims to optimize the use of irrigation water and foster sustainable agricultural development. Additionally, it caters to the needs of graduate and postgraduate students studying agriculture, offering specific insights relevant to their designated course on rainfed agriculture and watershed management.

Abstract: This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy-the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning-was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. Natacha Klein Käfer is Assistant Professor at the Centre for Privacy Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Natália da Silva Perez is Assistant Professor of Popular Culture in Historical Perspective in the School of History, Culture and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Abstract: This open access book is based on a multi-country collaborative research project focussing on Canada, China, India, and Indonesia. It responds directly and concretely to concerns about the generational sustainability of smallholder farming worldwide- reflected in the current UN Decade of Family Farming. Drawing on research that asks how (some) young people continue to pursue a (future) livelihood in farming, the book uses the life-course perspective and privileges voices of young farmers to show that movement away from farming such as time spent in education, migration and non-farm work does not exclude eventual farming futures. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of agrarian studies, anthropology, development studies, gender studies, human geography, rural sociology, and youth studies. Sharada Srinivasan is Associate Professor of Development Studies and Canada Research Chair in Gender, Justice and Development at the University of Guelph, Canada. She is the Principal Investigator of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)-funded research project from which this edited collection has been developed.

Abstract: Much philosophical work on pop culture apologises for its use; using popular culture is a necessary evil, something merely useful for reaching the masses with important philosophical arguments. But works of pop culture are important in their own right--they shape worldviews, inspire ideas, change minds. We wouldn't baulk at a book dedicated to examining the philosophy of The Great Gatsby or 1984--why aren't Star Trek and Superman fair game as well? After all, when produced, the former were considered pop culture just as much as the latter. This will be the first major reference work to right that wrong, gathering together entries on film, television, games, graphic novels and comedy, and officially recognizing the importance of the field. It will be the go-to resource for students and researchers in philosophy, culture, media and communications, English and history and will act as a springboard to introduce the reader to the other key literature inthe field.

Abstract: This book examines labour in the age of US hegemony through the art that has grappled with it; and, vice versa, developments in American culture as they have been shaped by work's transformations over the last century. Describing the complex relations between cultural forms and the work practices, Art, Labour and American Life explores everything from Fordism to feminization, from white-collar ascendency to zero hours precarity, as these things have manifested in painting, performance art, poetry, fiction, philosophy and music. Labour, all but invisible in cultural histories of the period, despite the fact most Americans have spent most of their lives doing it, here receives an urgent re-emphasis, as we witness work's radical redefinition across the world. Ben Hickman is Senior Lecturer in Modern Poetry and Director of the Centre for Modern Poetry at the University of Kent, UK, having studied at University College, Londonand the University of Kent. Recent publications include John Ashbery and English Poetry (Edinburgh University Press, 2012), and Poetry and Real Politics: Crisis and the US Avant-Garde (2016), also with EUP.

Abstract: This open access book showcases the innovative practices of Big Earth Data methods through a collection of global comprehensive case studies to monitor and evaluate indicators for seven SDGs, i.e., zero hunger (SDG 2), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), life on land (SDG 15), and to analyzes the interactions among multiple SDGs indicators. The emphasis on Big Earth Data is highly relevant within the context of growing global challenges. Disaster risk mitigation, climate change, global food security, resource management, and environmental challenges all are interlinked through earth systems and processes that are independent of human constructs. Therefore these case studies highlight methods and practices of spatial information mining and integrated SDG evaluation, which include evaluating the synergy and trade-off relationships among the SDGs in the context of their correlations; simulating multiple indicators' interactions in environmental, economic, and social scenarios in the context of their temporal variations; designing integrated evaluations of regional SDGs in the context of experience with the study of multiple indicators. Big Earth Data therefore has the potential to support informed policy and decision support at global, regional, and local scales.

Abstract: This book adopts an interdisciplinary social science approach. It includes original research papers on Bangladesh-China's connectivity to archaeology, history, religion, traditional Chinese medicine, language and literature, women and gender, diplomacy and strategic relations, bilateral business and trade, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Most of the existing literature perceives bilateral and regional connectivity from economic and strategic points of view and emphasizes financial and political profit-loss and integration. This book combines the archeological and cultural issues from history and diplomacy, and soft power from the present. The content of this book has a broader scope and is divided into six parts including background and introduction; archeology, history, and religion; business and trade; diplomacy and geo-strategy; traditional Chinese medicine; language and literature; and society, culture, and gender. This book is particularly designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, academics, journalists, and strategic think tanks from broader humanities and social sciences backgrounds including, history, archeology, religious studies, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, political sciences, international relations, economics, environmental studies, language and literary studies, gender studies, health studies, and business.

Abstract: This book explores how 21st-century media-based discourses on migrants, refugees, and displaced people both reinforce and reconfigure existing negative stereotypes about these groups as 'other.' It is particularly pertinent considering the increasingly polarized world context and the evolving communication ecosystem with new media as privileged platforms for exclusionary narratives toward the 'outgroups' of migrants, refugees, and displaced people. The book's contributions encompass various methodologies and disciplines within communication studies, including qualitative analyses of media representations and quantitative research on public opinion. Unlike much of the existing English-language scholarship on these marginalized communities, this book de-centers North America and the UK to offer a global perspective focusing on regions such as continental and eastern Europe, the Middle East and Persian Gulf, India, China, Turkey, Russia, and Scandinavia.

Abstract: Based on sociolinguistic analysis methods, theoretical analysis or empirical research was conducted on 39 keywords related to rural reform, peasant behaviour and peasant politics in China since the founding of the People's Republic of China. The research content covers the period from 1949 to the first decade of the twenty-first century. The research content includes changes in the rural policies of the People's Republic of China, changes in rural systems, organisations and behaviour in the era of collectivisation, and peasants' reactions and behaviour in the face of national policies. This book focuses on four aspects: the meaning of words themselves in Chinese, their meaning in contemporary Chinese political life, how peasants understand and practice the elements and connotations contained in words, and how words themselves change, transform or even disappear. This book will appeal to scholars of peasant politics, Chinese affairs, and contemporary Chinese history; undergraduate and postgraduate students of history, sociology, and political science; and the general reader interested in Chinese rural areas and Chinese politics. Chinese political societies in English-speaking countries, Chinese or East Asian research centres, universities or libraries may also be interested in this book.

Abstract: This innovative work tells the story of a unique partnership between a state prison administration and a team of incarcerated women, prison administrators, researchers, artists, and students known as The WoW Collective due to their joint efforts in developing a peer mentoring program called "Women's Words/Women's Worlds (WoW)." Using the example of WoW, the book provides a guide to doing community-based participatory research (CBPR) with women in prison that takes a collaborative-rather than the typically adversarial-approach to working together toward the goal of transformative social change. This book provides a ground-breaking example of how incarcerated women, prison administrators, researchers, and artists successfully worked together on a community-based project that led to meaningful results in the form of a peer mentoring program designed by women in prison for women in prison. Remaining closely attuned to the ethical dimensions of doing CBPR in a highly structured prison environment, this book provides inspiration to CBPR practitioners who seek to work within the criminal justice system to create real and meaningful change for the better. Co-authored by two criminologists, a senior prison administrator, and the unique collective known as WoW, this book provides both a clear step-by-step CBPR guide and a visionary approach to working with criminal justice practitioners.

Abstract: Within the interdisciplinary framework of gender, translation, and advertising, this study investigates gender representations of fictional characters in original and translated audiovisual advertisements. Stavroula (Stave) Vergopoulou discusses various manifestations of sexism on verbal and/or nonverbal levels. She also explores the ways in which translators can reduce or mitigate linguistic sexism in advertising translation to foster gender-fair language use. Her research draws on sociocultural linguistics and particularly on a social constructionist approach to gender identities. The exploration of the relationship(s) of gender and advertising and the discussion of the key concept of translation form the theoretical basis for the empirical research work. For this, English and German commercials from 2017 to 2020 have been examined along with their English, German, and Greek target texts.

Abstract: The chapters in this Handbook make compelling reading. Collectively, they offer a deep dive into the complex nexus of forced migration and slavery, pointing to extreme vulnerability, violence, and exploitation in a changing world. This Handbook is highly readable and represents a significant advance on our understanding of complex mechanisms associated with modern slavery....This is a Handbook of real importance. Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, UK The Palgrave Handbook on Modern Slavery examines the multi-faceted nature of human exploitation from a range of disciplines and critical perspectives. It unpicks the nuance of how modern slavery functions simultaneously as a social ill and potential corporate chameleon whilst remaining one of the greatest wicked problems of our time.... Abstract: This book approaches the generic theme of the series - studies in otherness and communication -from the perspectives of urban culture and posthumanist studies. It brings together a broad variety of essays examining the different ways in which agency reinvents itself, whether in the urban space, through the multiple forms and devices of art and culture, or through the relationship with technology and the surrounding environment, as a result of the contemporary conditions of post-humanism and the anthropocene. The sense of becoming other is added through a new paradigm that combines 1) a theoretical-essayistic mode, supported by illustrative cases with 2) the description of artistic processes and literary production. The essays are written by an international group of humanities and social sciences scholars/artists, consisting of Cristina Álvares, Pier Luca Marzo, Edwige Armand, Chiara Mengozzi, Ricardo G. Soeiro, Panagiotis Ferentinos, Mónica Aubán Borrell, Luis Campos Medina, Bill Psarras, Cíntia Sanmartin Fernandes, Micael Herschmann, Mitja Velikonja, Teresa Mora and Tiago Porteiro. Abstract: Against a backdrop of continually growing global Islamophobia, this handbook provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of the key issues, theories, debates, and developments in gendered Islamophobia, unpacking how Western, Orientalist constructions of Muslim men and women affect the lived experiences of Muslim men and women; impact social, legal, and criminological policies, practices, and discourse; and give rise to resistance against gendered Islamophobia. Drawing on theories from philosophy, sociology, gender studies, psychology and criminology, sections examine the interdisciplinary theoretical dimensions of gendered Islamophobia; illustrate the dynamics of gendered Islamophobia through the use of case examples in the UK, Europe, North America, Australasia, the Middle East, and South Asia. This handbook will be valuable reading for scholars, researchers, and policymakers around the globe in Gender Studies, Sociology, Criminology, Politics, and Law, who focus on the intersections of gender and Islamopobia, and the impact on Muslim men and women respectively. Amina Easat-Daas is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at De Montfort University, UK. Recent publications include her monograph Muslim Women's Political Participation in France and Belgium (2020, Palgrave Macmillan) and the co-edited collection Countering Islamophobia in Europe (2019, Palgrave Macmillan). Abstract: As a continuation of our award-winning book, 'China's City Cluster Development in the Race to Carbon Neutrality' and our recent book, '30 Years of Urban Change in China's 10 Core Cities', this book delves into China's recent progress in reshaping its cities through holistic urban transformation strategies. Building on our previous work, we expand our focus to explore the latest developments in urbanization, examining how recent strategies and policies have influenced cities and cityscapes across China and beyond. It is evident that China is reshaping its cities through a dynamic interplay of policy reforms, technological advancements, and creative planning. The late 20th and early 21st centuries have seen a sharp increase in urbanization, with a particular focus on the development of smart, resilient, and sustainable cities. Through a thorough examination of case study examples that have undergone significant recent change, this book investigates how these goals are being achieved. 'China Under Construction: Shaping Cities through Recent Urban Transformation' offers a thorough overview of China's current urban transformation efforts, highlighting both the achievements and the ongoing challenges, through case studies and in-depth evaluations. We hope to provide insightful information about the real-world applications of urban strategies and their wider implications for China's future urban landscape by concentrating on ten selected cities. This extension of our earlier research emphasizes how critical it is to view urban transformation as a complex process influencing social dynamics, technology, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability, among other facets of city life and urbanization. .

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: This work analyzes carnival in Rio de Janeiro through the irreverent view disclosed by the illustrated magazines Fon-Fon! and Careta. For such purpose, texts and illustrations elaborated by great names in caricature and literature were used, as well as by journalists who remained anonymous due to the fact that their chronicles and articles did not carry their signatures. The way in which carnival was dealt with in said publications, was intimately related to the world view which intellectuals enjoyed, the Belle Epoque, and to the readers of these magazines: the urban middle classes and part of the elite. To understand both the view and the type of humoristic approach used, songs and the works of chronicle writers, memorialists and historians who worked on the theme were also investigated. At the end, what could be verified through the study of these publications was the importance that carnival enjoyed in the lives of those men of letters and brushes, and how relevant was the counterpart which they made possible not only to readers, but also to us, historians. Through these publications, it is possible to redeem and reconstruct part of the history of carnival as well as understand the context of the period, political problems, stylishness, innovations and changes in the lives of Rio de Janeiro (carioca) dwellers. So much attention to the theme from the illustrated press denotes the importance of carnival to the financial health of newspaper companies, since the subject and its well-humored approach pleased readers, besides showing that not only did those writers and artists write about the festivities in an irreverent manner, but they also actively participated in them as carnival merrymakers, and therefore they were, themselves, artificers of that history. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation

Abstract: This book aims to trace the development of a new conception of 'mobility citizenship' in Europe historically, demographically and experientially. To this aim, it adopts a 'constellationist' approach applied to the intra-European mobility space and uses the case studies of Hungarian and Romanian migration to the United Kingdom to develop a multidimensional meso-level comparative empirical analysis of mobility-citizenship constellations. The main theoretical proposition of the book is that citizenship has undergone a noticeable change in meaning and valuation, with mobility rights becoming a more central component in the structure of opportunities it provides citizens. The logic of 'mobility citizenship' is thus changing long-held perceptions around the social functions of citizenship, and consequently, the nature of contemporary transnational society. The multifaceted analysis presented in the book will appeal to readers with backgrounds in various disciplines such as political sociology, migration studies, citizenship studies, nationalism studies, or European studies. Chris Moreh is Lecturer in Sociology at Newcastle University, UK. His main research interests focus on the political sociology of migration, citizenship, ethnicity, nationalism and urban heritage. His approach to research is interdisciplinary and multimethodological, having combined intensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviewing, qualitative text and documentary analysis, and statistical modeling in his work. He is the author of Alcalái románok: migráció és társadalmi differenciálódás [Romanians of Alcalá: Migration and social differentiation] (2014), as well as various journal articles. He is currently working on an edited volume on Brexit and Migration and a textbook on quantitative sociological methodology that takes a unique approach in combining computational techniques and empirical applications to researching social trust, based on a British Academy and Leverhulme Trust funded project to develop a Trust Research Methodology Database.

Abstract: Throughout history, religious communities have left an indelible mark on society's spiritual life, moral compass, and economic landscape. To fulfill their divine mission, these communities need resources to carry out their religious and God-centered activities. Economic engagement has always been and remains an integral part of their worship. In an increasingly globalized world, where the professional marketing of religion is on the rise, these communities face growing pressure to present their beliefs and values in a polished, professional manner. This is critical to maintaining or even expanding their influence in a global world. As a result, religious communities today often operate like businesses, engaging in diverse sectors of the economy ranging from pilgrimages and the halal market to the fashion industry. This book explores the complex relationship between business and religion. It provides a historical overview, examines contemporary examples, and offers a nuanced analysis of the risks and opportunities involved. It also explores the theological implications of doing business in the name of God. The Editor Ednan Aslan is Professor of Islamic Religious Education at the Institute for Islamic Theological Studies at the University of Vienna. In addition to his numerous publications, Aslan has made an important contribution to the establishment of Islamic theology and religious education in German-speaking countries. He is widely read and quoted nationally and internationally for various reasons.

Abstract: Based on original findings from research carried out in six low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, this book brings together conceptual and empirical analyses of private higher education and social and academic inequality, a topic largely unexplored in the social science literature, particularly on private higher education. Field surveys of different categories of actors in numerous private universities have combined common methods and tools in countries chosen for the differences in their social structures and the characteristics, organization and development of their private higher education systems. Based on these qualitative surveys, combined with available quantitative data on higher education, this book analyzes the production and reproduction of social and academic inequalities in countries as diverse as Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Vietnam. Finally, the historical and social structuring of the private education systems in the selected countries provides the framework for analyses that go beyond the traditional higher education demand/supply and public policy approaches to explore the perspective of the actors - institutional administrators, teaching staff and students.

Abstract: "Across thirty three dazzling chapters, this groundbreaking collection from some of the world's leading migration scholars makes a major contribution to the field of migration studies. Centring south-south migration raises vital theoretical, methodological, and empirical questions for research on mobility globally which go far beyond geographical movements within the symbolic geography of the 'Global South'. Situated at the cutting edge of these debates, the contributors to this volume offer food for thought for scholars and students from a range of disciplines and locations." --Lucy Mayblin, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociological Studies University of Sheffield. Author of Asylum After Empire: Postcolonial Legacies in the Politics of Asylum Seeking (2017) and Migration Studies and Colonialism (with Joe Turner, 2020) This open access handbook examines the phenomenon of South-South migration and its relationship to inequality in the Global South, where at least a third of all international migration takes place. Drawing on contributions from nearly 70 leading migration scholars, mainly from the Global South, the handbook challenges dominant conceptualisations of migration, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform theoretical and policy understandings and unlock migration's development potential. The handbook is divided into four parts, each highlighting often overlooked mobility patterns within and between regions of the Global South, as well as the inequalities faced by those who move. Key cross-cutting themes include gender, race, poverty and income inequality, migration decision making, intermediaries, remittances, technology, climate change, food security and migration governance. The handbook is an indispensable resource on South-South migration and inequality for academics, researchers, postgraduates and development practitioners. Abstract: "Muhammad Bilal's excellent book is both pressingly relevant and original. The manuscript brilliantly reveals how religious violence in the case of blasphemy accusations and killings is just one aspect of more generalized socio-cultural and political violence in Pakistan. It analyses, too, the cultural nature of the legal system, showing how the legislating of law alone makes little difference to people's social understandings of religious ethics and politics. In short, this book convincingly argues first how blasphemy exists (only) in the eye of the beholder, and then how the very 'eyes' of those beholders are socialized by a range of political forces that both generate and reflect complex cultural frameworks." -Christopher Houston, Professor of Anthropology, Macquarie University, Australia The book embarks on a journey into the intricate landscape of blasphemy in Pakistan amid a rising tide of blasphemy accusations, public lynchings, and contentious blasphemy laws. Challenging conventional perspectives, this book delves beyond legal and religious confines, offering an ethnography of the mundane as a secular reading and a grand existential scheme to highlight how blasphemy laws and religious prisms often fail to capture the essence of the blasphemy dilemma in Pakistan. The author offers an insightful re-evaluation of the blasphemy issue, addressing its multifaceted definition, the motivations driving intentional blasphemous acts and frivolous accusations, the authority to punish alleged offenders, the paradox of religious violence, and the emergence of mediated expressions and virtual negotiation of blasphemy. Through meticulous grassroots analysis of ordinary Pakistanis' perspectives, the book offers pragmatic policy solutions for blasphemy issues, presenting unorthodox insights into Pakistan, its diverse populace, and the ever-evolving sensibilities of Islam and societal dynamics in both local and global contexts. Muhammad Bilal is Professor of Anthropology and Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology at Fatima Jinnah Women University, Pakistan.

Abstract: This open access Palgrave Pivot explores the experiences of nonreligious asylum seekers in Northern Europe. While religious persecution is often cited as a reason for seeking asylum, nonbelievers also face significant persecution in their home countries due to their lack of religious affiliation. Despite this, their experiences are frequently overlooked in academic discussions, and asylum assessment centers have been slow to develop frameworks that address their unique challenges. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research from Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands, this book provides a comprehensive examination of the challenges nonbelievers face, as well as the opportunities they create as agents within the system. Emotions offer an analytical window into the world of nonbelievers, highlighting their desperation and innovative practices of evidence creation. Throughout the book, the logics of credibility assessment are critically explored, revealing the cultural chasm between assessors and nonreligious claimants.

Abstract: This second edition of Happiness Across Cultures contains 8 brand new chapters on previously uncovered topics, such as Covid19, refugees, and violence. Different cultures experience happiness differently. Traditionally, the West is considered materialistic, and happiness is said to come from achievement and acquisition. The East is said to be more people-oriented, where happiness is a result of deep personal interactions. Thus, poor people can be happier in the East than the West, because they are not so concerned with possession and more with society. Abstract: This timely handbook responds to the international drive to know more about Whiteness - its origins, its impacts and, importantly, the means for diffusing it. Guided by critical Whiteness theory, the volume deconstructs, decodes and disrupts Whiteness as it is constructed and employed in contemporary and diverse contexts. To do so, the international contributors discuss and critique the role of 21st-century Whiteness across a range of professions and disciplines relevant to the needs of contemporary global citizens. Failure to deconstruct Whiteness as an ideology and the power structure underlying national and global racial inequalities undermines the efforts to improve social, health and economic outcomes for societies and nations on a grand scale. The handbook is comprehensive in its nature and contents, with ten parts ranging from a more disciplinary-based approach, theoretical frameworks, and methodological frameworks, to different aspects of decolonized approaches tosocial, health, political and economic well-being. It navigates how various disciplines respond to the pervasive and persuasive nature of Whiteness in their operational settings, across individual, professional, organisational and systemic levels. The volume is unique in its dual focus on deconstructing Whiteness and providing examples and recommendations on how diverse groups seek to decolonize their communities and people through action. Examples and recommendations are discussed with particular focus on: 1) the interconnection between integrating indigenous and diverse knowledges and perspectives in deconstructing Whiteness; 2) the urgency for critical Whiteness discourse, dialogue and professional development across disciplines; and 3) institutional accountability to decolonisation and anti-racism. Considering the ongoing marginalization and institutional racism directed at non-White individuals and communities and the rise of White supremacy movements, critical Whiteness pedagogyand research is more important than ever. The Handbook of Critical Whiteness: Deconstructing Dominant Discourses Across Disciplines is an essential resource for students, educators, academics, researchers, higher education administrators, practitioners, policy-makers, organisational leaders, government stakeholders, and other professionals in social sciences, medicine, STEM, allied/global/public health, legal and political disciplines, and health and social care institutions. It especially engages those interested in decolonisation, critical race theory, critical Whiteness theory, critical multiculturalism, social justice, anti-racism and indigenous knowledges.

Abstract: Modernity presents itself as an age of increasing social disintegration: secularization and rationalization, urbanization and globalization, individualization and digitalization make it difficult for communities today. Modernity comes with desirable promises that make it attractive, but it does not come free: Its price is escalating modern loneliness. Denis Newiak tells a cultural history of modernization that, from industrialization to the late-modern network society, produces ever new and harsher experiences of loneliness. The author Denis Newiak is a media, film and television scholar, teaches media and communication theory at various universities and conducts research on expressions of loneliness in modern societies This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book would look stylistically different from a conventional translation.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: This book brings together anthropological and historical studies that analyze burial rituals within the Caribbean through the theoretical lens of syncretism and the hybridization of post-colonial and contemporary time periods. Based on oral historiography, historical document analysis and ethnographic interviews, the chapters in this volume outlay the creolization of ancestral burial rituals in the wider Caribbean and present case studies of eight Caribbean countries: Barbados, Haiti, Grenada, Guyana, Suriname, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago. This contributed volume is edited by scholars from different disciplines such as social work, psychology, and political science, providing an interwoven lens of individual human, political and environmental contexts. Contributing authors are from diverse disciplines such as anthropology, communications, sociology, political science, social work, and psychology and each discipline approaches the subject matter through their perspective lenses. Each chapter analyzes the hybridity of the burial rituals in the construction of culture and identity within conditions of colonial antagonism and inequity and is rich with oral histories from lay community historians, firsthand accounts, and historical texts. Post-colonial Burial and Grieving Rituals of the Caribbean will be of interest to scholars of cultural and religious anthropology, history and sociology, as it highlights the importance of grief and shows how it is encapsulated into burial traditions that are transmitted intergenerationally and express important aspects of Caribbean cultures

Abstract: This book is an original and innovative study of how Gothic nostalgia and toxic memory are used to underpin and promote the ongoing culture wars and populist politics in contemporary popular culture. The essays collected here cover topics from the spectral to the ecological, deep fakes to toxic ableism, Mary Poppins to John Wick to reveal how the use of an imaginary past to shape the present, creates truly Gothic times that we can never escape. These 'hungry ghosts' from the past find resonance with the Gothic which speaks equally of a past that often not only haunts the present but will not let it escape its grasp. This collection will look at the confluence between various kinds of toxic nostalgia and popular culture to suggest the ways in which contemporary populism has resurrected ideological monsters from the grave to gorge on the present and any possibility of change that the future might represent. Simon Bacon is an independent scholar based in Poznań, Poland. Katarzyna Bronk-Bacon is Assistant Professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.

Abstract: This book explores key issues on the relational and operational dimension of the professional actions aimed at ensuring the well-being and inclusion of migrants in the reception system. Starting from the assumption that well-being is a multi-level phenomenon related to different and complex questions, the chapter authors articulated their reflections developing some thematic contents, complementary to one another, from the perspectives of different social actors involved in the inclusion process. A special attention is paid to the risk factors as potential obstacles to the inclusion, not only in the achievement of well-being but also in the relationship with the receiving society and with the reception system. Case studies will be presented to show how this complexity is explored integrating different theoretical perspectives with the participation of all social actors involved in inclusion pathways (unaccompanied migrant minors, immigrant families, refugees, social operators, voluntary guardians). The authors share the social responsibility in investing in human and professional resources in the reception system and in connecting it with the local community. Updating the social workers' tools and methods become more and more relevant to enable the diffusion of new skills, functions, and roles in the management of reception of migrant minors and adults.

Abstract: This book develops a theoretical approach to social stratification and applies it to the development of the official system of state honours in Britain. It examines both class and status, and sets out an innovative framework for understanding social status - an important but often ignored and misunderstood dimension of social stratification. It is shown that a system of peerages, knighthoods, and other state-based royal honours emerged from feudal patterns of political rule and became an unplanned framework of social integration in the UK that has, since the nineteenth century, decayed and been challenged by alternative criteria of status. The book explores the class basis of the rise and decay of royal honours and includes a review of contemporary attempts to reconstruct and renew a system of social honour that reflects contemporary relations of power and class in Britain. It will be of interest to scholars and students of class, social inequality and British social structure.

Abstract: This book surveys and critiques existing empirical and theoretical literature on the Bourdieu-informed concept of transnational habitus. The term "transnational" has been used widely in studies of migration research where it has allowed scholars to have a deeper understanding of the practices not only of migrants moving across national borders but also of agents taking positions in transnational spaces without necessarily criss-crossing different nation states. Focusing on the potential of transnational habitus as an analytical tool, the authors propose a model of transnational habitus to identify integral key factors for the operationalisation in research. Drawing on reflexivity, the authors analyse transnational selves and map transnational spaces of classification. Identifying strengths, inconsistencies and key problems in this rapidly developing body of literature, this interdisciplinary and international book will be of interest to students and scholars in sociology, anthropology, migration studies, cultural studies, human geography, as well as diaspora studies. Garth Stahl is Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Queensland, Australia. His research interests lie on the nexus of neoliberalism and socio-cultural studies of education, identity, equity and inequality, gender and youth, and social change. Guanglun Michael Mu is Associate Professor and Enterprise Fellow at the University of South Australia. As a sociologist of education, he is interested in building resilience in (im)migration contexts. Abstract: This book conceptualises the diagnosis 'Social Anxiety Disorder' (SAD) in women as a rational response to life in postfeminist, neoliberal, twenty-first century Britain. By speaking to women with this diagnosis, and drawing on the author's lived experience, it investigates the interplay between women's social anxiety and Western culture. It argues that societal factors are implicated in women's mental distress to a far greater extent than dominant (especially psychiatric) narratives would hold-narratives which, premised on individual pathology, often present a biologically reductionist and medicalised account. Through deploying a unique blend of feminism and anti-psychiatry, this book critiques the framework which exists around diagnosing and treating SAD, but without dismissing distress. Inspired by feminist critiques of other gendered psychiatric diagnoses, such as Anorexia Nervosa, it conceptualises 'SAD' in women as a 'culture-bound syndrome'. This book will interest students and scholars of gender studies and sociology.

Abstract: This book focuses on two issues: the creation of benefits and opportunities for the poverty-stricken people and the trade-off between FCS and poverty alleviation. At the theoretical level, it explains the essential characteristics of PAFCS, analyses the impact mechanism of FCS projects in poverty alleviation, clarifies the stakeholders and their interests and demands, and delineates the dynamic mechanism of FCS projects and poverty alleviation. Based on this theoretical framework, the current situation and challenges for PAFCS in southwest China's ethnic areas are examined in depth. Project performance was quantitatively measured both for projects themselves and for community farmers. The research emphasises that FCS projects in poverty-stricken areas are not the same as PAFCS, highlights the combination of poverty alleviation theory and ecological compensation theory, and considers PAFCS as an intersection of poverty research and ecological compensation research. Additionally, the research suggested that FCS projects are not general poverty alleviation projects, highlights the need for full respect to be granted to the subjective will and value judgement of farmers, including poverty-stricken farmers, takes the lead in focusing on the win-win goal of combating climate change and reducing poverty, and makes a breakthrough in researching some key issues that need to be solved in the practice of PAFCS in the ethnic areas of Southwest China. This book is helpful for global scholars in the field of sustainable development, anti-poverty and forest carbon sequestration, government officials, and organisations in developing countries concerned with agricultural development, forestry economy, and sustainable development, as well as all the people around the world who want to find innovative solutions in the climate negotiations.

Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht Max Breger Fragen zu Folter aus Perspektive der interaktionistischen Soziologie nach.

Abstract: This is an open access book. This OA book contains extensive research on social justice during China's transition period. Rather than taking a macro-historical approach, or looking at social justice from a philosophical perspective, the book focuses on relevant theories and justice at a meso-level. It looks at the basis for social justice, and details the basic values and the basic standpoints when it comes to social justice. It differentiates between the concepts of justice, righteousness, fairness and equality. It then lays out three social justice rules (related to equal opportunities, distribution and social adjustment), and discusses the ideas of intergenerational justice and procedural justice. The book looks from a sociological point of view at social justice during China's period of transition. It focuses on how certain rules affect the social strata, and how they lead to discrimination, inequalities, liberty, equality, universal justice and/or differential justice. This book assesses improper pursuits of social justice in China. It also looks at how the ideas of liberty and equality have evolved, and some of the key problems over the last 70 years. This book also explains some of the more popular social topics that foster empirical discussions. Since the reform and opening-up era, China has made great achievements when it comes to social development. The country has made notable progress with social justice. There are more equal opportunities than ever before. Nevertheless, there remain worrying problems when it comes to the idea of justice. To some extent, these problems offset the achievements. In some form, the development processes have been somewhat misguided, and these have had a negative impact on Chinese society and how it functions and develops. Therefore, this book is of theoretical and practical significance when it comes to social justice research. Wu Zhongmin, born in 1959 in Qingdao, China, is a distinguished scholar holding the title of First-Class Professor at the National Philosophy and Social Sciences of China. He serves as a leading expert at the Expert Research Center of the Party School of the Central Committee of CPC and is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). .

Abstract: This book describes sustainable aquaculture ingredients and additives uncovered in Africa and Asia. It also discusses current aquaculture research practices on alternative protein, carbohydrate, lipid, mineral, vitamin, and feed additives. It further demonstrates how aquaculture practices could be a feasible and cost-effective venture, capable of producing products in an environmentally sustainable manner. The aquaculture industry is suffering from scarcity of sustainable feedstuffs, particularly protein and oil components, which play an important role in the nutritional requirements of many aquaculture species. The availability of components such as fish meal, fish oil, and other synthetic feed additives has rendered aquaculture operations unsustainable, particularly in terms of cost. Therefore, the quest to replace such unsustainable components is developing in Africa and Asia. This book helps aquaculture farmers, researchers, the aquafeed industry, investors, students, lawmakers, and other stakeholders in the aquaculture field to comprehend scientific-based sustainable feed ingredients and additives in aquaculture from an African and Asian viewpoint.

Abstract: Drawing on extensive research from a 14-month ethnographic study, this book delves into the intricate lives of married women in a rural Sinhala village in Sri Lanka. It explores their efforts to uphold community expectations while employing innovative and strategic approaches to navigate ruptures within their marital journeys. The chapters progress by dissecting the pivotal gender roles assumed by women in building happy marriages, establishing stable households, cultivating harmonious homes, and achieving effective household management. At the heart of this narrative is the concept of 'homemaking,' which symbolises not only family life but also social stature. The text discusses how the categorisation of homes as 'good' or 'bad' relies on women's conscientious adherence to gender norms. Notably, the author also looks at the unique practice of married women resorting to sorcery as a means to mitigate the challenges stemming from marital disruptions while remaining aligned with societal gender expectations. Throughout, chapters systematically investigate the spectrum of opportunities available to these women, alongside the constraints they encounter, as they endeavour to cultivate successful marriages. Overall, the book provides profound insights into the complex interplay of married life, spotlighting women's astute negotiations of their roles and adept management of ruptures within the framework of established gender norms. This book will be of interest to scholars in Gender Studies, Anthropology, Family Studies, and South Asian Studies.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: This textbook explores the histories of royal women in Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It argues that by dint of an unprecedented conjunction of historical shifts and powerful personalities, it was these women, and not men, who sat at the helm of global politics; moreover, it was they who in truth steered our world’s transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. Organized into chapters devoted to each of the era’s great states, the book sets out to challenge several historical premises. First, it shows that women were the actual, if not always formally crowned, sovereigns of these states, or at least played a decisive role in shaping their policies. Second, the book dissolves the conventional dichotomy between East and West, showing that in both Christian Europe and Islamdom, women achieved their high status by means of similar strategies and at similar periods in history. Third, by demonstrating that there was a precedent for female authority long before the first harbingers of the women’s movement in the eighteenth century, the book calls into question received ideas about historical progress and the evolution of women’s liberation

Abstract: Die Leipziger Orientalistik des 19. und 20.

Abstract: This book explores how and why exchanges across civilizations have come to enrich science today. The dialogical dimension of the history of science has long been marginalized by an excessive concern on why modern science emerged in Europe, but not in any of the advanced civilizations of the East. This focus upon what has been called Joseph Needham's "Grand Comparative Question" ignores his other project, focused on showing how dialogues between civilizations have nurtured science. Needham's "Grand Dialogical Question" - if we may call it that by parity - has directly or indirectly inspired a vast body of literature showing how interconnections of civilizations over the last three thousand years, and exchanges of cosmological, mathematical, geographical, physical, biological and medical technologies, techniques, practices and knowledge, have been woven together to produce current science. Bringing together scholars whose research range across multiple civilizations and disciplines, this book investigates the scope and limits of Needham's dialogical vision for science. Arun Bala is a physicist and philosopher of science. He is the author and editor of multiple books, including Complementarity Beyond Physics (2017) and Asia, Europe and the Emergence of Modern Science (2012). He is Director (Research) with Joseph Needham Foundation for Science and Civilization, and a Visiting Scholar with the Institute of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology in University of Toronto. Raymond W. K. Lau is a sociologist by training. His research interests focus on ancient Chinese thoughts and comparative intellectual developments. He retired as full professor of sociology from the Open University of Hong Kong, and now serves as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Hong Kong Shue Yan University as well as senior advisor to The Joseph Needham Foundation for Science and Civilization. Jianjun Mei is an archaeo-metallurgist, specializing in the origins and role of metallurgy in Early China, and cultural interactions between China and the West. He is President of the International Society for the History of East Asian Science, Technology and Medicine, and Director of the Needham Research Institute. .
