In einem Kapitel zur Automatisierung zeigt dir der Autor, wie du mit Redstone-Schaltungen deine Gegenstände effizient in einem automatischen Lagerhaus organisieren und sogar mit einem automatischen Ofen viel Zeit beim Einschmelzen von Dingen sparen kannst. Falls du all deine Gegenstände auch noch zählen möchtest, lernst du, wie du ein Zahlendisplay erstellst, um es z.B. für eine selbst gebaute Zählmaschine zu verwenden. Founded in 2005, the company grew its business using traditional infrastructure (about 250 servers hosted in the US). However, a number of challenges started to rise in 2014: Can the agility of our infrastructure match our software agility? In particular, how can we efficiently scale our data storage and processing capabilities? How can we build a better disaster recovery plan? How can we globally optimize our infrastructure spend? After a thorough study, Viadeo decided in early 2015 to migrate 100% of its physical infrastructure to Amazon Web Services. This presentation will cover: the thought process that led to this unconventional move (for an established company like Viadeo), our design options and trade-offs, focusing on delivery speed and risk avoidance, why we did or didn’t alter parts of our stack, especially on the backend side (MySQL, ElasticSearch, HBase, Hadoop), the complete automation and testing of our infrastructure build, aka “infrastructure as code” using AWS CloudFormation, Puppet, and continuous integration and more!

In this session we’ll discuss some examples of how companies like LinkedIn make product and business decisions from the utilization of data. We’ll discuss the spectrum of data science used within an organization, and organizational needs such as democratization of data via self-serve data platforms for experimentation, monitoring, and data exploration — and the challenges that come with such systems. We’ll cover important foundations such as data quality and how to track and merge disparate data sources. We’ll review some examples of how data scientists can drive the art, science, and politics of defining which performance measurement metrics should be used to drive the business. Participants will leave this session with the ability to identify opportunities for data scientists to contribute within their organization, and to drive transformation into a data-driven organization.
