Abstract: Organizations may soon start monitoring employees’ whereabouts and behavior more closely than ever, using surveillance tools such as apps, sensors, and algorithms that scrape and analyze the data people produce as they work. With the help of artificial intelligence, this data can be translated into real-time diagnostics that gauge people’s health and risk levels. That may sound creepy, but there are ethical ways to use AI to promote safety on the job.

Abstract: Leaders and the teams they manage are experimenting with new ways of working. They are pivoting the axes of work for both place and time, designing hybrid ways of collaborating that have few precedents. To build for the short and long terms, leaders must understand the upsides and downsides of these place and time options. They also must align them to enhance the essentials of productive work: energy, focus, coordination, and cooperation.

Self-sufficient production has proved to be an important source of essential equipment, parts, and supplies, filling the gap between do-it-yourself initiatives and mass manufacturing. As digital fabrication technologies get better, faster, and cheaper, there is the potential for widely distributed access to modern means of production.

It does not account for the uncertainties surrounding an invention’s technology, ecosystem, and business model. To factor those in and understand the trajectory and impact of a disruptive value proposition, innovators must ask themselves five critical questions.

Abstract: New research shows that relatively few employees consistently share their thoughts and opinions on issues outside the scope of their jobs with their managers. This is a problem because employee voice — the willingness to speak up to managers about a multitude of issues and opportunities for improvement — offers many benefits for both companies and their workers. Here are ways to encourage this behavior.

These subconscious values shape strategies and tactics by directing leaders’ focus and influencing how plans are made and implemented. Abstract: The pandemic is forcing many B2B companies to cut costs, but conventional approaches to cost reduction may not serve them well. Instead, leaders should intensify their focus on customers by identifying the small, select group of customer value drivers in their companies. They then should cut costs by reducing value-added waste, managing customer acquisition and retention more effectively, and prioritizing and eliminating strategic initiatives that don’t align well with customer value.

Many executives undermine their own ventures’ standing by misinterpreting and misfiring on strategies considered fundamental to creating new categories. Here, the authors spell out three common mistakes that turn would-be kings into commoners in the categories they create.

Abstract: To drive growth in digital ecosystems, companies need to develop two partnering capabilities: digital readiness and curation. Digital readiness requires that ecosystem value is distinctive and that partners are digitally organized and connected via technology such as APIs. Curation requires that ecosystem partners share joint goals, benefits, and information. Both capabilities are positively correlated with higher ecosystem market share and higher revenues.

Abstract: Biases related to gender and other demographic factors creep into decisions about which projects to fund with venture capital. Data-driven approaches can help tease out those biases and limit their impact. Algorithmic methods identify potential instances of discrimination and increase transparency, making it easier to find and fix problems. Aversion to algorithms can be tempered by letting decision makers retain some subjective control over the data-driven process.

Abstract: How can companies decide which new digital offerings to pursue? Successful digital offerings are created at the intersection of what technologies can deliver and what customers want and will pay for. That point of intersection, however, has proved to be elusive. To find it, companies must experiment repeatedly, cocreate with customers, and assemble cross-functional development teams — and the insights gleaned along the way must be shared internally.

Abstract: It’s tempting to look at high-profile business ecosystems and assume that the model is a reliable formula for success. In fact, many ecosystems never earn a significant market share, and only about 15% dominate their markets over time. An analysis shows that most share a common life cycle, with several critical windows along the way. For management, the key is understanding these windows and adjusting the company’s strategy over time to meet the unique requirements of each.

Abstract: Globalization has made anticipating disruptions and managing them when they occur more challenging. Although companies originally moved production offshore to countries such as India and China to take advantage of lower labor costs, events such as Iceland’s 2010 volcanic eruption and the Japanese tsunami in 2011 have shown that the vulnerabilities of extended supply chains are real and serious. Lean supply-chain practices, designed to keep costs low in a stable business environment, can increase risk levels during disruptions due to the lack of buffer capacity. While companies tend to focus on the supply side of their supply chains when scanning for potential risk factors, they also need to pay attention to the customer side. Approaches to risk management such as enterprise risk management (ERM) and business continuity management (BCM) can help companies avoid supply-chain disruptions and recover normal operations quickly. But in the authors’ view, they rely too heavily on risk identification when many of the risks are unpredictable or unknowable before the fact. They also depend on statistical information that may not exist and address each risk independently. Finally, they are predicated on the goal of returning to a stable operating condition. Based on their work with a number of companies, including fashion retailer L Brands Inc. (formerly known as Limited Brands), Dow Chemical, Johnson & Johnson and Unilever, the authors present a comprehensive framework for assessing supply-chain vulnerabilities and addressing them through enhanced resilience capabilities. The framework, which they call Supply Chain Resilience Assessment and Management (SCRAM), is based on an explicit characterization and prioritization of the vulnerabilities that make an organization susceptible to disruptions, and the capabilities that help an organization anticipate and overcome disruptions. The framework is designed to help companies identify their most important supply-chain vulnerabilities and to set priorities for capabilities that need to be strengthened.
