Such challenges can make migration a political lightning rod and a topic for angry debate.

An ageing public service increases fiscal burdens while decreasing immediate capacities to deliver services. For example, tackling social exclusion involves simultaneously addressing barriers to labour market integration, health problems and low education. Coping with an ageing society requires new approaches to health care and employment, as well as to pensions. Social indicators provide the broad perspective needed for any international comparison and assessment of social trends, outcomes and policies. By linking status and response indicators across a broad range of policy areas, social indicators help readers to identify whether and how the broad thrust

Abstract: Urban areas are now home to more than half the population of OECD countries. Megacities like Tokyo with more than 35 million people and Mexico with about 18.5 million, and large agglomerations such as Montreal, Helsinki, Madrid and Stockholm are often called 'engines of national growth'. They represent an important part of the national economy (up to 50% for Budapest, Seoul and Helsinki) and feature higher GDP per capita and productivity levels than their country's average. But there is also an urban paradox as cities also harbour large pockets of unemployment and poverty and suffer from&nbsp

Abstract: A small, geographically isolated country, New Zealand faces some serious energy sector challenges, requiring special attention to security of supply issues, both in oil and gas domains. Natural gas production from the major Maui field is rapidly declining. New domestic resources must be found or an import capability developed and imports secured if gas is to remain a significant part of the country's energy mix. At the same time, New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions are rising: the most recent estimates put them at 21% above their Kyoto target over the first commitment period. Thankfully, th

Railway restructuring is a must, but where circumstances in each country are so different there can be no "one size fits all" solution. Nevertheless, some guidelines for restructuring are emerging. The strategies to be implemented will involve both governments and the railway companies themselves. Separating infrastructure from operations, for instance, could be a good model provided infrastructure usage is priced efficiently. Concessions should be g

It focuses on active ageing, providing opportunities and incentives for people to contribute more actively in the labour market and society as they grow older. This
