    Abstract: Sterben und Tod stellen in der Gegenwartsgesellschaft einen komplexen Problembereich dar, der verschiedenste gesellschaftliche Bereiche und Diskurse – private wie öffentliche, theoretische wie praktische – betrifft. Im vorliegenden Band wird durch ein interdisziplinäres Spektrum der aktuelle Stand der medizinisch-ethischen und juristischen wie auch der geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Diskussion und Forschung dargestellt. Zum anderen wird die grundsätzliche Haltung unserer auf menschliche und technische Leistung und Fortschrittsgläubigkeit ausgerichteten Gesellschaft gegenüber dem Phänomen Tod und die Problematik einer heute erschwerten sinnhaften Deutung des Todes erörtert. Zwei interkulturelle Fallbeispiele ergänzen die wissenschaftlichen Beiträge.
