Kurzfassung: "This informative Research Handbook brings together a unique combination of methodological, philosophical and theoretical perspectives to present a comprehensive overview of communication and prejudice research. Editors Elvis Nshom and Stephen Croucher, along with expert authors from across the globe, extensively analyse prejudice and communication research, highlighting the importance of drawing distinct connections between the two. They discuss the relationship between language and bias, realistic group conflict theory, systemic inequity and #BlackLivesMatter, as well as empirical studies in communication and prejudice in non-US contexts. As the global understanding of prejudice has changed and developed, this Research Handbook emphasises the crucial need to explore prejudice and its interrelated processes in more diverse contexts, namely the ways in which we communicate and interact with one another. This Research Handbook is a vital resource for students, academics and researchers specialising in sociology of discrimination, social psychology, cultural sociology and communication. Providing an interdisciplinary overview of communication and prejudice, this book is also beneficial for policymakers and practitioners working in domestic politics, public policy and international relations"--

Kurzfassung: "In this thoroughly revised and updated second edition, William Allen and Carlos Vargas-Silva bring together a diverse range of experts to explore the latest research methods in migration studies, taking stock of major changes that have been salient for migration research-as well as the social sciences more broadly-in the last decade. Spanning a variety of different methodologies, this second edition of the Handbook of Research Methods in Migration provides practical guidance on designing, completing, and communicating migration research, considering diverse audiences including migrants themselves. Chapter authors reflect on and engage with trends of migration research, with seventeen new chapters covering developments in data sources, techniques, and practical issues impacting migration researchers. They assess quantitative methods, including surveys, conjoint analysis and satellite data, as well as qualitative methods such as archival research, language patterns and the use of social media. Ultimately, they consider the use of these methods in specific case studies, before focusing on how to address practical and ethical issues that can arise during the process of migration research. Expertly developing the ideas discussed in the first edition, this Handbook is a crucial resource for students and scholars of development studies, human geography and social science research methods. It also appeals to researchers working on migration in all its forms, as well as ethnicity, discrimination and demographic change"-- Provided by publisher

Kurzfassung: "Our Elgar Concise Introductions are inspiring and considered. They explain the key principles in business and are expertly written by some of the world's leading scholars. The aims of the series are two-fold: to pinpoint essential concepts of business and management, and to offer insights that stimulate critical thinking. In this Concise Introduction, Michael Lounsbury and Joel Gehman set out an overview of organization theory that clarifies how to cultivate a robust scholarly identity in a field rich with diverse research traditions. Providing a summary of rationalist, pragmatic and co-constitutive theories, they highlight how scholars can meaningfully contribute to the academic conversation and maximize the practical relevance of their work. Key features: Provides a comparative analysis of different organization theories. Helps scholars mindfully position themselves and their work within specific academic discussions. Highlights opportunities to bridge ontological differences by engaging in scholarly debates across theoretical categories. This Concise Introduction is a crucial reference point for organization scholars. It will also appeal to doctoral students and early-career scholars in management, strategy and entrepreneurship"--

Kurzfassung: "Spatial Inequalities and Wellbeing represents a timely contribution to the literature tackling one of the most crucial concerns of modern times: the rise of inequalities and its far-reaching implications for individual wellbeing. Taking a multidisciplinary perspective, the book highlights the different types and sources of inequalities and identifies opportunities for policy action to tackle various inequalities at once. Featuring expert contributions from eminent scholars, this insightful book posits that policies themselves can produce deep inequalities at the spatial level while trying to reduce them and also explores how inequalities and marginalisation depress individual wellbeing and can become a threat to political and institutional stability. Chapters critically analyse the causes of spatial inequalities, ranging from education and housing to location in the largest cities. The book also highlights the negative consequences of these gaps widening, and emphasises how participatory and bottom-up interventions can contribute to narrowing such disparities at the micro-level. Academics, researchers and students in urban and regional studies; human geography; economics and finance; politics and public policy; and sociology and social policy will find this to be an informative read. Policymakers within these fields will equally find this to be a beneficial resource"--

Kurzfassung: "This Handbook provides a framework for analyzing migrant diversity, utilizing case studies that illustrate the social dynamics and consequences of such diversity for both migrants and host societies. By engaging with a wide range of literature and theoretical perspectives related to race and ethnicity, diasporas, gender, superdiversity, and intersectionality, it examines how such diversities can result in social processes of inclusion, exclusion, and hierarchical inequalities. In this Handbook, an interdisciplinary range of scholars analyze the diversity among various groups of labor and refugee migrants, marriage and ethnic return migrants, and diasporas in various continents, including the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In addition to ethnic diversity, chapter authors discuss migrant differences based on gender and sexuality, social class, generation, and legality and how they impact host societies and their treatment of migrant groups. Comprehensive and thought-provoking, this Handbook is a vital read for students and scholars in migration studies, anthropology, sociology, and geography. Its conceptual framework about migration and diversity will also appeal to those studying race and ethnicity, diasporas, and gender"--

Kurzfassung: "This timely Handbook explores the relationship between public policy and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across a broad range of geographical, technical, political and policy contexts. It contributes to critical AI studies, focusing on the intersection of the norms, discourses, policies, practices, and regulation that shape AI in the public sector. Expert authors in the field discuss the creation and use of AI technologies and how public authorities respond to their development, by bringing together emerging scholarly debates about AI technologies with longer-standing insights on public administration, policy, regulation and governance. Contributions in the Handbook mobilise diverse perspectives to critically examine techno-solutionist approaches to public policy and AI, dissect the politico-economic interests underlying AI promotion, and analyse implications for sustainable development, fairness, and equality. Ultimately, this Handbook questions whether regulatory concepts such as ethical, trustworthy, or accountable AI safeguard a democratic future or contribute to a problematic de-politicisation of the public sector. The Handbook on Public Policy and Artificial Intelligence is a crucial resource for students and scholars of public policy and administration, political economy, political science, sociology, law, regulation and governance, computer science and technology studies. It is also beneficial to policy practitioners, civil society actors, and regulators working with AI technologies"--

Framework napisany w Pythonie Flask, w odróżnieniu od typowych frameworków, umożliwia swobodne dobieranie technologii i komponentów aplikacji, a nawet tworzenie własnych rozwiązań. Oznacza to, że Flask pozwoli Ci zachować pełną kontrolę nad budowanym oprogramowaniem!

Kurzfassung: "This thoroughly revised and updated Handbook brings together an international range of contributors to highlight the deep interdependence between migration and globalisation and explore the impact of economic, social and political globalisation on international population flows. It provides an interdisciplinary perspective on a discussion that has been intensifying and diversifying over the past 25 years. Chapters provide an overview of important research questions, relevant literature, main approaches and findings in the field, and set out future challenges facing the international community. Particular focus is paid to the global economy, dynamics of interregional and internal migration, links between global migration and climate change and the cultural ramifications of migration. In this revised second edition chapters consider the interlinking issues of migration and health, climate change and human mobility, and the use of digital technologies in the governance of migration and asylum systems. Exploring the multifaceted linkages between two of the most important socio-economic phenomena of our time, this Handbook will prove an ideal resource for researchers and journalists focused on international relations and migration. It will also be useful for scholars and students of social and public policy, sociology, political science, geography, migration development and legal theory"--

Kurzfassung: "Migration, Mobility and the Creative Class challenges contemporary conceptions of the mobility of the creative worker. Exploring the differences between a range of historical, political, and social contexts, this forward-thinking book contests the validity and logic of policymakers' strategies to attract the creative class, and emphasises the need for a reassessment of the plans employed for local and regional development. Drawing on detailed biographical life-course information obtained through in-depth interviews with creative workers, this book refutes established ideas that creative workers are a unique, autonomous and highly mobile group. Documenting empirical findings, it highlights how the migration and occupation patterns of creative workers are intimately connected with their early family experiences and to their social class. Ultimately, this innovative book recommends that policy should redirect its focus away from migration and towards creating places with good schools, affordable housing, sustainable jobs and strong connections across communities. Pairing in-depth case studies with established theoretical grounding, this book will be a fascinating read for academics, researchers and students specialising in economic geography, regional economics, migration and human geography. Its unique insights and practical policy recommendations will also be of benefit to those working in town planning, regional policy development and the creative industries"--

Kurzfassung: "Non-human rights are a reality today: this book unpacks their paradoxes as well as their significance for our historic crucible. As animals, rivers, mountains, rainforests, ecosystems, and synthetic entities such as machines, AI, and robots gain recognition as subjects of rights in different parts of the world, non-human rights become part of our ordinary legal landscape and vocabulary. This timely book provides a critical outlook on this rising trend at the crossroads of two of the main concerns of the 21st century: climate change and automation. In seeking to address the foundations, genealogies, philosophies, and impacts of non-human rights, the contributors to this volume examine both their potential and limitations. Are non-human rights just a mere extension of the liberal human rights discourse or, as some suggest, something else and new based on different principles? Are they a 'revolution' or just 'more of the same'? Are they a practical solution that could 'save us' from climate disaster and self-destruction through automation or part of the problem and obstacle for social change? This book will be a vital resource for scholars and students of human rights, environmental law, animal rights, law and technology studies, legal theory, socio-legal studies, constitutional law and public international law. Providing an accessible overview of the changing patterns of the rights discourse in contemporary societies, it will also benefit anthropologists, climate and animal rights activists, political scientists, international relations scholars, policy makers and sociologists"--

Kurzfassung: This thoroughly original book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of welfare arrangements and their wider context in Western Europe. Using the concept of social modernity, Ingo Bode investigates current challenges to these arrangements and examines prospects for progressive welfare reform. Adopting a sociological perspective, The Fate of Social Modernity dissects the complex layers of welfare agreements and assesses their potential for promoting socially balanced societies. Ingo Bode outlines how both public programmes and involved welfare organisations addressing children, disadvantaged workers, or elderly people may prompt yet also hamper processes of social development. He also explains how insights into social dynamics in European countries, such as Germany, Italy, Norway, and the UK, may contribute to a better understanding of problems and opportunities elsewhere in the world. This foundational book is a crucial read for scholars in the fields of comparative social policy, sociological theory, and organization studies. It will also be of benefit to practitioners in public administration and non-profit sector studies seeking to better understand the chemistry of social development"- Provided by publisher

Kurzfassung: "This prescient book provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of retirement practices in Denmark, Germany and the UK. Per H. Jensen interrogates the factors behind rapidly increasing retirement ages in these countries between 2000 and 2018. Drawing on the age arrangement approach, Rapidly Increasing Retirement Ages considers the position of older workers in the context of changing norms and ideals, discourses, welfare states, labour markets, and families as well as the changing characteristics of older workers themselves. Jensen uses statistical data to highlight how the developing practices of older workers are prompted by societal transitions from an early to late exit age arrangement. This includes transitions from early to late exit discourses, from welfare states to enabling states, from closed to open labour markets, from male breadwinner to dual breadwinner family models, and from low to high levels of work ability among older workers. In addition Jensen shows how the different dimensions of change are connected and interrelated. Intersectional in its scope, this book posits an illuminating, comprehensive and much-needed response to this growing societal issue. This book is a vital read for academics, researchers and students of sociology, social policy, economics, welfare policy and political science. Emphasising the role of human rights as the only true global political morality to arise since the Second World War, chapters explore its role as applied to often controversial issues, such as capital punishment, the exclusion of same-sex couples from civil marriage and criminal abortion bans. Clarifying and cross-examining the morality of human rights, Michael J. Perry discusses their connection to moral equality and moral freedom, as well as exploring the significance of anti-poverty human rights. This illuminating book concludes with an explanation as to why the morality of human rights is acutely relevant to challenges faced by humanity in the modern era. In particular, the challenges of growing economic inequality and climate change are emphasised as having profound relevance to the morality of human rights. Interrogating the Morality of Human Rights will be of great benefit to both undergraduate and graduate students who are contemplating the idea of human rights and their morality within their studies. Kurzfassung: Providing a much-needed study on cybersecurity regime building, this comprehensive book is a detailed analysis of cybersecurity norm-making processes and country positions, through the lens of multi-stakeholder diplomacy. Multi-disciplinary and multi-national scholars and practitioners use insights drawn from high-level discussion groups to provide a rigorous analysis of how major cyber powers view multi-stakeholder diplomacy. Looking at how past cybersecurity initiatives and multi-stakeholder negotiations in other fields illuminate its dynamics, this book will help put states' approaches towards multi-stakeholder cyber diplomacy into perspective, and frame the role of private actors in cybersecurity regime building. Evaluating the most promising institutional arrangements and mechanisms for implementing cybersecurity, this book combines top-down analyses relevant to the design of international cybersecurity regimes with bottom-up case studies, tracing the approaches of important states towards multi-stakeholder participation in cyber diplomacy. With a wealth of policy-relevant findings, this book will be welcomed by practitioners and scholars of international law, international organisation and international cybersecurity as well as multi-stakeholder governance and multilateral regimes. Policymakers and diplomats involved in international cybersecurity processes will also benefit from its cutting-edge comparative analysis of the approaches of key cyber powers.

Kurzfassung: Feminist Frontiers in Climate Justice provides a compelling demonstration of the deeply gendered and unequal effects of the climate emergency, alongside the urgent need for a feminist perspective to expose and address these structural political, social and economic inequalities. Taking a nuanced, multidisciplinary approach, this book explores new ways of thinking about how climate change interacts with gender inequalities and feminist concerns with rights and law, and how the human world is bound up with the non-human, natural world. With contributions from leading scholars in law, feminism, human rights and politics, this book considers how equality is conceptualised experienced and used in policies, law and practice that are integral to climate justice. Chapters reveal how international and national policy and legal frameworks fall short on gender equality and climate justice. Overall, the book demonstrates that the climate crisis demands an ambitious and transformative approach to equality, including developing feminist ideas of care and social reproduction, to reconstruct law and policy towards a more just world for all. This ground-breaking book will be essential reading for scholars across many areas of law including environmental law, human rights, public international law, law and gender, and law and development. Its discussion of the international framework alongside in-depth case studies and assessments of women's mobilization strategies will also be highly relevant to social scientists, officials in international organizations, policymakers, lawyers and activists.

Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. Offering a new theoretical framework for understanding gentrification and displacement, this timely Research Agenda focuses on resistance as the central research area in this subject field. Arguing that the future of gentrification research should focus on accomplishing the end of gentrification, chapters provide practical organizing and policy strategies using international case studies which are rooted in community-based research. Encouraging researchers to find inspiration in new methods, sites and questions for exploring resistance, this Research Agenda seeks to empower communities and cities to reclaim urban life and city space for people by examining key issues such as housing insecurity and lived reality versus policy and practice. Graduate students and researchers of geography, urban planning and urban sociology will find the use of case studies informative and thought-provoking. Kurzfassung: "This incisive book examines how the values of social justice can be protected against attacks from the interacting economic, social, environmental, and health crises of the 21st century. Global contributors outline key elements of a political programme that resists the shift to the right caused by this turbulence through centring fairness, equality, respect and inclusion. Integrating policy, practical, and political perspectives, this book analyses the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of racism and xenophobia, the growth of right-wing populism and nationalism, the 2008 economic crisis, and the impacts of climate change. Arguing that the current era is unique for the global nature of its turbulences, it illustrates how and why the gap between the advantaged and disadvantaged has grown more rapidly due to recent crises. Contributors focus on how these crises relate to and reinforce each other, providing roadmaps for political action across national borders. This book will be essential reading for academics in sociology, politics, public and social policy, sustainability, and human rights. Providing ideas and models to support the practical struggle for social justice, it will also be an invaluable guide for activists, politicians, and policymakers"--

Kurzfassung: "In seven pioneering dialogues, Bert van Roermund resumes the conversations he has had over the last twenty-five years on reconciliation after political oppression. Questions of time are predominant here: How does memory relate to both past and future? Can one be a victim and perpetrator at the same time? Is reconciliation ultimately based on an original bond among humans that enables survivors to forgive their former oppressors? Does this entail a betrayal of past sufferings? Such questions are discussed in this book by a group of philosophers from (former) conflict areas around the globe. Both the characters and the dialogues are fictional, but at the same time, they are as real as can be. They originate in conversations with many colleagues and intensive research within an international network of scholars, writers, artists, and political activists. Chapters provide philosophical discussions on the highly relevant topic of law, time, and reconciliation. The book reaches out to all those who wish to reflect on the challenges of peace work, restorative and transitional justice, refugee policies and military interventions, as well as students and teachers of relevant disciplines including social ethics, political philosophy, human rights and international relations"--

Kurzfassung: "Understanding Society and Knowledge proposes that knowledge, rather than nature, violence, or power, provides the basis of and driving force behind human action in modern society. It demonstrates how the legal containment of knowledge enables the transformation of the knowledge society into knowledge capitalism. Providing an overview of the history of knowledge societies, Nico Stehr analyses the concept of knowledge as well as the nature of post-industrial societies. Chapters examine the genealogy of social scientific theories of modern society; the role of knowledge as a capacity to act or as an intersubjective resource; and recent changes in the structure of the material economy. The book concludes by discussing the political challenges of the knowledge society, highlighting the ways in which discoveries in modern knowledge and subsequent political responses continue to generate controversies. This illuminating book will be an essential resource for students and scholars of economics, political science, sociology and sociological theory, as well as science and technology studies"--

Kurzfassung: "Reflecting on the depth of the experience with crises, this innovative book demonstrates what the world can learn from insights into crises from the Japanese perspective. Taking an institutionalist approach with a strong historical precedent, leading scholars in the social sciences and law explore how better to deal with both foreseeable and unforeseen crises. Illustrating their multifaceted and complex nature, the book examines a broad range of crises throughout history, including economic, fiscal and political crises; force majeure events such as pandemics and natural disasters; and military conflicts and acts of war. Chapters consider how various actors anticipate and deal with these crises, looking closely at their different perceptions of crisis and varying degrees of urgency. Analyzing institutional design and response, and the impact of psychological factors on disaster preparedness, the book considers how the decision-making capabilities of individuals can be enhanced to improve institutional capacity. Transdisciplinary, with an international reach, this topical book will prove invaluable to students and scholars across the social sciences, particularly those interested in Asian politics and environmental policy, disaster preparedness and institutional design. It also provides guidance for policymakers working in civil code reform"--

Kurzfassung: As an aspiring data scientist, you appreciate why organizations rely on data for important decisions--whether it's for companies designing websites, cities deciding how to improve services, or scientists discovering how to stop the spread of disease. And you want the skills required to distill a messy pile of data into actionable insights. We call this the data science lifecycle: the process of collecting, wrangling, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Learning Data Science is the first book to cover foundational skills in both programming and statistics that encompass this entire lifecycle. It's aimed at those who wish to become data scientists or who already work with data scientists, and at data analysts who wish to cross the "technical/nontechnical" divide. If you have a basic knowledge of Python programming, you'll learn how to work with data using industry-standard tools like pandas. Refine a question of interest to one that can be studied with data Pursue data collection that may involve text processing, web scraping, etc. Glean valuable insights about data through data cleaning, exploration, and visualization Learn how to use modeling to describe the data Generalize findings beyond the data

Kurzfassung: "The global education crisis is a complex problem that requires change from teachers, school managers, civil society, implementers, planners, governments and donors. Addressing the issues that lie beneath this crisis requires new ways of working. Systems thinking is a suite of approaches to grappling with complex problems that is beginning to gain traction in international education. This book brings together new research in the nascent field of systems thinking in international education. Outlining the implications that systems thinking can hold for future research, practice and progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4, a diverse range of leading scholars, policymakers and practitioners present novel research to encourage the shift from a linear view of change to a systems view. Chapters present diverse approaches to applying systems thinking in education across middle- and low-income countries, alongside research on how this has changed mindsets more widely. Questioning notions such as scaling and the universal applicability of 'what works', authors here suggest that locally relevant evidence and systemic rewards for using it are necessary to achieve SDG 4. This innovative book exemplifies how systems thinking offers the tools, frameworks and concepts to improve outcomes in education systems. With the education crisis further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, this timely book is essential reading for all those concerned with education and sustainable development goals. This thought-provoking book should be read by all those working to achieve SDG4; those whose day jobs inspire them and who look to their bookshelves for new ideas"--

Kurzfassung: "Despite the broad engagement of higher education institutions in most social sectors, limited thinking and hyper-individualistic approaches have dominated discussions of their value to society. Advocating a more rigorous and comprehensive approach, this insightful book discusses the broad range of contributions made by higher education and the many issues entailed in theorising, observing, measuring and evaluating those contributions. Prepared by a group of leading international scholars, the chapters investigate the multiple interconnections between higher education and society and the vast range of social, economic, political and cultural functions carried out by universities, colleges and institutes and their personnel. The benefits of higher education include employable graduates, new knowledge via research and scholarship, climate science and global connections, and the structuring of economic and social opportunities for whole populations, as well as work and advice for government at all levels. Higher education not only lifts earnings and augments careers, it also immerses students in knowledge, helps to shape them as people, and fosters productivity, democracy, tolerance and international understanding. The book highlights the value added by higher education for persons, organisations, communities, cities, nations, and the world. It also focuses on inequalities in the distribution of that value, and finds that the tools for assessing higher education are neither adequate nor complete as yet. International and interdisciplinary in scope, this book will prove an invaluable resource to students and scholars of higher education, educational policy and social policy. It will also prove a useful resource to both university executives and tertiary education policymakers who want to make higher education more effectively accountable to the public"--

Kurzfassung: "In the face of major global demographic change, social care policy and practice are in urgent need of radical reform and reassessment. Rising poverty, inequality and pressure on local communities internationally, are also increasing the urgent need for reform. Drawing on the crisis-ridden UK experience as a case-study, this highly original book identifies the limits of the traditional welfare state in taking forward policy for the twenty-first century. The proposals amount to a renewed approach to social care, based on the philosophy of independent living as originally developed by the international disabled people's movement and subsequently embodied in a United Nations treaty applicable to all in need of care and support. Despite wide international sign up since adoption in 2008 there is little evidence of any nation successfully delivering. For the first time, this book offers both a blueprint for an environmentally sustainable, rights-based approach to social care and a practical route to achieving it"--

Kurzfassung: Skills and inequality have long been a central theme in analyses of social structure and economic development. A Research Agenda for Skills and Inequality offers an insightful cross-disciplinary framework for research on how unequal living conditions form, persist and change in interplay with human skill formation and development. Drawing on prominent new advances in the field, this incisive Research Agenda builds a forward-thinking framework for research. Spanning an extensive eighteen chapters, each examining a specific but major aspect of the general theme of skills and inequality, the book provides a comprehensive overview of links between the two. Against the backdrop of established insights from related but separate fields of inquiry, including economics, sociology, demography, human resource management, political science, philosophy and psychology, the Research Agenda presents an exciting overview of recent advances in analyses of skills and inequality. Opening vistas for future research based on extensive literature reviews and new findings, this Research Agenda offers compact, ground-breaking essays for students, policy makers, and advanced researchers in many disciplines including social policy, business management, and employment relations

Kurzfassung: "Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly being adopted to address climate change, health, and urban sustainability, yet ensuring they are effective and inclusive remains a challenge. Addressing these challenges through chapters by leading experts in both global south and north contexts, this forward-looking book advances the science of NBS in cities and discusses the frontiers for next-generation urban NBS. NBS are fundamentally inter- and transdisciplinary approaches that require systems thinking and multi-level governance. With a focus on the multiple challenges that cities face, from heat and air pollution to storm water and threats to human health, this book puts forward a diversity of ideas for embracing complexity in mainstreaming NBS and inspiring new approaches to create the ecological urban futures we need. Speaking to the need for cities around the world to employ ecological, nature-based design, this book will be essential reading for early career professionals, practitioners, scholars, and students across multiple disciplines engaging with nature-based solutions including urban ecology, design, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, urban planning, policy, and management"--

Kurzfassung: "This insightful book examines all aspects of the design process and implementation of questionnaire surveys on the activities of business, public sector, and non-profit organizations. Anthony Arundel discusses how different aspects of the survey method and planned statistical analysis can constrain question design, and how these issues can be effectively resolved. Throughout this engaging yet practical book, Arundel promotes good practices for questionnaire design, sample construction, and survey delivery systems including online, postal, and verbal methods, with a focus on obtaining high-quality data in line with ethics and confidentiality requirements. Chapters include constructive advice on questionnaire design and testing, survey implementation, and data processing, analysis, and reporting, with examples of time and financial cost budgets. Considering the recent developments in survey methods, the book explores how to use web probing as a substitute for cognitive testing and examines the use of tablets and smartphones in answering questionnaires. Combining theoretical and practical insights into survey design, implementation, and data processing and analysis, this book will be essential reading for business and management scholars and students, with a particular interest in research methods and organization studies. It traces the development of climate and energy policies since the early 1990s and examines their continued evolution in the context of the 2019 European Green Deal. With contributions from leading international scholars, it describes the key dynamics driving policy developments and the role of key actors in climate and energy-related policy processes. Covering topics that have previously been relatively neglected, or have recently gained greater significance, such as finance and investment, 'hard to abate' sectors and negative emissions, this timely Handbook offers an up-to-date and unrivalled exploration of the complexities of climate policymaking. Hot Cities offers insights from eminent academics and practitioners, providing both a practical and theoretical outlook on strategy development in a climate crisis. Chapters call for urgent responses to the urban heat problem, providing future projections to illustrate why this is important. They highlight that despite prominent issues within cities, such as maladaptive practices or unsustainable path dependency in city policy and planning, urban spaces are likely to be the safest and most protected locations from the uncompromising outcomes of global warming. Kurzfassung: "This timely and perceptive book addresses the issues surrounding the adequacy of old age income for future pensioners worldwide. It highlights how today's young people are confronted with the simultaneous challenges of increasing employment uncertainty and declining pension generosity - topics which are highly relevant in contemporary welfare states. This pivotal study of the relationship between the current labour market and future pensions explores the ways in which public policies relating to education, employment, and welfare work to sustain a decent living standard during retirement. Using a diverse range of comparative studies across a multitude of countries and nation-specific case studies, chapters consider the influence of institutions and social, cultural, and economic norms on public pensions and retirement saving behaviours in young adults. Providing a valuable insight into contemporary research findings, this innovative book will be essential reading for students and scholars in the areas of welfare states, labour economics, pensions, and the sociology of youth. Policymakers in these fields will also benefit from its analysis of sustainable pension policy development"--

Kurzfassung: "Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd in partnership with United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on SSE (UNTFSSE) The Encyclopedia of the Social and Solidarity Economy is a comprehensive reference text that explores how the social and solidarity economy (SSE) plays a significant role in creating and developing economic activities in alternative ways. In contrast to processes involving commodification, commercialisation, bureaucratisation and corporatisation, the SSE reasserts the place of ethics, social well-being and democratic decision-making in economic activities and governance. Identifying and analysing a myriad of issues and topics associated with the SSE, the Encyclopedia broadens the knowledge base of diverse actors of the SSE, including practitioners, activists and policymakers. Analysing the role of SSE organisations and enterprises in enhancing wellbeing, planetary health and democracy at various levels and their contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the Encyclopedia invaluably summarises knowledge about the key aspects of the SSE. Accomplished researchers depart from traditional nationalistic, Eurocentric and trans-Atlantic perspectives to explain the SSE from a global perspective with a focus on untold stories of its development in both developing and developed countries. A collective work of the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on SSE (UNTFSSE), this Encyclopedia will serve as an essential tool for scholars and students of comparative social policy, international economics, management studies and economic sociology. Key Features: - 57 entries - Clearly organised into thematic sections addressing histories, concepts and theories, actors and organisations, development, and environment and governance - Breaks down the complex relationship between economic, social and political dimensions in an accessible way"--

Kurzfassung: "This thoughtful book provides a refreshing, comparative perspective on the future of care homes in our post-pandemic world. Building on more than a decade of collaborative international and interdisciplinary research in Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the US, it employs a feminist political economy framework to address the key challenges facing care homes in this turbulent era. With particular attention to lessons learned in Canada, Sweden, and Norway, the contributing authors argue that publicly-funded care homes remain critical to care arrangements but require policy and practice transformations to produce equitable and supportive conditions. Attentive to the specific contexts and tensions that shape care, chapters address key questions about care home quality and labour in relation to gender, race, ethnicity, religion and class. The book analyses the physical and social boundaries that set the conditions for quality of life and care, moving beyond the minimum to explain how nursing homes can provide joy. Offering alternative approaches to the complex challenges facing this vital public service, this book will be a key reference for students and scholars of health policy, comparative social policy and social work. Its integration of statistical, policy and practice analysis with ethnographic research will prove invaluable to those concerned with long-term care policy and practice"--

Kurzfassung: "This timely book explores how Northern European countries have sought to balance their welfare states with increased levels of migration from low-income countries outside the EU. Using case studies of the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden, leading scholars analyse the varying approaches to this so-called 'progressive dilemma'. Providing an in-depth analysis of the relationship between public policies and the flow of migrants into these Northern European states, the book considers which destination-country policies most attract asylum seekers and other migrants. Chapters explore how the four states have responded to increased levels of immigration, examining their handling of issues related to integrating admitted applicants into the labour market, educating the children of immigrants, and naturalisation. Concluding with an investigation into contemporary public consensus regarding migrant selection, based on original survey experiments, the book sheds light on an issue that has become both politically and academically salient in Europe since the late 20th century. Interdisciplinary in scope, this expansive book contributes to the emerging field of research in the intersection between European migration studies and welfare studies. Its examination of the states' varying responses to increased migration will be of significant interest to researchers, policymakers, and public intellectuals in Northern Europe and beyond"--

Kurzfassung: Causal inference lies at the heart of our ability to understand why things happen by helping us predict the results of our actions. This process is vital for businesses that aspire to turn data and information into valuable knowledge. With this report, data scientists and analysts will learn a principled way of thinking about causality, using a suite of causal inference techniques now available. Authors Hugo Bowne-Anderson, a data science consultant, and Mike Loukides, vice president of content strategy at O'Reilly Media, introduce causality and discuss randomized control trials (RCTs), key aspects of causal graph theory, and much-needed techniques from econometrics. You'll explore: Techniques from econometrics, including randomized control trials, the causality gold standard used in A/B-testing The constant-effects model for dealing with all things not being equal across the groups you're comparing Regression for dealing with confounding variables and selection bias Instrumental variables to estimate causal relationships in situations where regression won't work Techniques from causal graph theory including forks and colliders, the graphical tools for representing common causal patterns Backdoor and front-door adjustments for making causal inferences in the presence of confounders

Kurzfassung: The literature of ideas. When author Pamela Sargent used those words to describe science fiction in 1975, the genre had exploded into the literary mainstream. As a literature of ideas, science fiction has proven to be a powerful metaphor for the world around us, offering a rich tapestry of imagination through which to explore how we lead, how we think, and how we interact. To Boldly Go assembles more than thirty writers from around the world to help us better understand ourselves through the lens of science fiction. Each chapter of To Boldly Go draws out the lessons that we can learn from science fiction, drawing on classic examples of the genre. A chapter on the burdens of leadership by Ghost Fleet author August Cole launches readers into the cosmos with Captain Avatar aboard the space battleship Yamato. In another chapter, the climactic Battle of the Mutara Nebula from The Wrath of Khan weighs the advantages of experience over intelligence in the pursuit of strategy. Whether using Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to explore the nuances of maritime strategy or The Expanse to better understand the threat posed by depleted natural resources, To Boldly Go provides thoughtful essays on relevant subjects that will appeal to business leaders, military professionals, and fans of science fiction alike.

Kurzfassung: Imagine living in a world in which you were routinely patronized by women. Imagine having your views ignored or your expertise frequently challenged by them. Imagine people always addressing the woman you are with before you. Now imagine a world in which the reverse of this is true. The Authority Gap provides a startling perspective on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. Would you believe that US Supreme Court Justices are interrupted four times more often than male ones . . . 96% of the time by men? Or that British parents, when asked to estimate their child's IQ, will place their son at 115 and their daughter at 107? Marshalling a wealth of data with precision and insight, and including interviews with pioneering women such as Baroness Hale, Mary Beard, and Bernadine Evaristo, Mary Ann Sieghart exposes unconscious bias in this fresh feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all.
