Abstract: Writer Tanya Zack and photographer Mark Lewis offer a stunning portrait of Johannesburg and personal stories of its residents, showing how its urban transformation occurs not in a series of dramatic, widescale changes but in the everyday lives, actions, and dreams of individuals

Abstract: Ethnographic museums, now often rebranded as collections of ‘world cultures’, appear permanently problematic, even as their contexts and the orientation of their activities change. Across Europe and elsewhere, curators and other museum staff are committed to dialogue and collaboration with the peoples from whom collections were made. But their vast assemblages of artefacts, removed from countries of origin primarily during the colonial period, and assumed, mostly inaccurately, to have been looted, seem always in question. Photo-Museology arises from an art project undertaken over 25 years. From the early 1990s, Mark Adams and Nicholas Thomas together investigated sites of cross-cultural encounter in the Pacific and associated places in Europe, ranging from Captain Cook memorials to ethnographic museums. Some of those museums still exhibited colonial symbols and forms of knowledge, others had attempted to displace such histories, foregrounding more inclusive or progressive stories. Complementing the academic studies in the Pacific Presences series, this book offers what John Berger referred to as ‘another way of telling’. Through photography, it revisits the places collections were made, and the places they ended up in. It is a meditation on presence and absence.

Abstract: Elizabeth A. Povinelli's inheritance was passed down not through blood or soil but through a framed map of Trentino, Alto Adige-the region where family's ancestral alpine village is found. Far more than a map hanging above the family television, the image featured colors and lines that held in place the memories and values fueling the Povinelli family's fraught relationships with the village and with each other. In her graphic memoir The Inheritance, Povinelli explores the events, traumas, and powers that divide and define our individual and collective pasts and futures. Weaving together stories of her grandparents' flight from their village in the early twentieth century to the fortunes of their knife-grinding business in Buffalo, New York, and her own Catholic childhood in a shrinking Louisiana woodlands of the 1960s and 1970s, Povinelli describes the serial patterns of violence, dislocation, racism and structural inequality that have shaped not only her life but the American story. Plumbing the messy relationships among nationality, ethnicity, kinship, religion, and belonging, The Inheritance takes us into the gulf between the facts of history and the stories we tell ourselves to survive and justify them

Abstract: "Explore the changing world of late nineteenth-century Iran through the gaze of one of its most renowned photographers, Antoin Sevruguin. This volume, which will be accompanied by a forthcoming exhibition, publishes for the first time the Oriental Institute Museum's complete collection of nineteenth-century Iranian photographs, most of which were created by Sevruguin. Sevruguin's artfully staged photographs still resonate with us today. Accompanying the print catalog is a series of essays that investigate Sevruguin's life and photographic career, including the lasting impact of his unique vision, as demonstrated by the work of contemporary artist Yassaman Ameri" -- Publisher's description
Note: Literaturverzeichnis Seite 347-367 , "A hitherto little-known treasure of the Oriental Institute Museum is its collection of 152 Qajar-era photographs, which date to the nineteenth century and were captured primarily by the acclaimed Iranian-Armenian photographer Antoin Sevruguin. Recently revealed by a growing body of scholarship to be a major figure in early photography, Sevruguin documented changing life in Iran through a wide range of subjects as the country stood on the cusp of modernity at the turn of the twentieth century. As emphasized by special exhibit curator Tasha Vorderstrasse, Sevruguin stood in contrast to his Western contemporaries who, immersed in the Orientalist tradition, focused specifically on the antiquity of the country, romanticizing the ruins of a glorious past. Rather, Sevruguin's photography promotes the newly arrived conveniences of the modern age while simultaneously capturing traditional ways of Iranian life - often drawing a stark contrast between the two in their juxtaposition. Understanding the new technology to be more than a mere medium of documentation for posterity, Sevruguin was an early proponent of photography as art, frequently backstamping his work with the label "photographie artistique". Sevruguin's distinctive approach to composition, choice of subject matter, and use of light and shadows are hallmarks of his photographic vision. Expertly curated by Vorderstrasse - and timely for the recent scholarly and artistic appreciation of Sevruguin's work - Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present exhibits for the first time the Oriental Institute's unstudied and largely forgotten collection of Qajar-era photographs that were acquired at the beginning of the twentieth century. As one might expect of an OI exhibition, Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present and its accompanying catalog rigorously explore Sevruguin's work in the fullest of its historical, cultural, and ethnographic contexts."--taken from Foreword, page vii

Abstract: Featuring over 450 archival photographs and line drawings, Chinese Dress traces the evolution of Chinese clothing from court and formal costumes to the everyday fashions of twenty-first century China. Author Valery Garrett skillfully weaves the story of Chinese dress in all its variations - elaborately embroidered robes, military uniforms, children's dress, wedding and funeral attire, working clothes, Mao-inspired fashion - against a backdrop of historical, cultural and social change. A comprehensive and sumptuously illustrated book, this book includes images of garments and accessories from museum and private collections, as well as unpublished or little-known archival photos and printed materials.

Abstract: Why do early films present the Netherlands as a country full of canals and windmills, where people wear traditional costumes and wooden shoes, while industries and modern urban life are all but absent? Where do such visual clichés come from? This study investigates the roots of this imagery in popular visual media ranging from magazines to tourist brochures, from anthropological treatises to advertising trade cards, stereoscopic photographs, picture postcards, magic lantern slide sets and films of early cinema. The book provides an in-depth study of this rich and fascinating corpus of popular visual media that has not been studied before, and the discourses that these images were meant to illustrate. This intermedial approach offers new insights into the emergence of national clichés and the study of stereotypical thinking.

Abstract: This Is Not an Atlas gathers more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion when becoming a counter-cartographer yourself

Abstract: The region of the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan plateau is known for its unique and characteristic vernacular architecture and housing culture which is slowly but surely disappearing. The first part of the book analyses 19 traditional houses in the region that respond in diverse ways to the specifics of their location and local climate. The second part presents a comparative study of the construction elements – walls, roof and façades – using photographs and hand-drawn construction details. Abstract: The Things We Value takes as its subject the creativity and cultural heritage of Solomon Islands, focusing on the kinds of objects produced and valued by local communities across this diverse country in the south-west Pacific. Combining historical and interpretive analyses with personal memories and extensive illustrations, the contributors examine such distinctive forms as red feather-money, shell valuables, body ornaments, war canoes, ancestral stones and wood carvings. Their essays discuss the materials, designs, manufacture, properties and meanings of artefacts from across the country. Solomon Islanders value these things variously as currency, heirlooms and commodities, for their beauty, power and sanctity, and as bearers of the historical identities and relationships which sustain them in a rapidly changing world. The volume brings together indigenous experts and leading international scholars as authors of the most geographically comprehensive anthology of Solomon Islands ethnography yet published. It engages with historical and contemporary issues from a range of perspectives, anthropological and archaeological, communal and personal, and makes a major new contribution to Pacific Islands studies

Abstract: Susanna Fritscher’s installation works cannot be separated from their environment. On the basis of core elements such as space and movement, they directly address our visual perceptions. This book documents sixteen of her completed works, including: the new Vienna Airport (with Baumschlager Eberle) and the Centre des Archives Nationales in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine (with Massimiliano Fuksas). In the first section of the book, the artist explains its guiding concept of artistic space. Together with the book designer Ruedi Baur, she develops a symbiosis of her own art with ink and the printed page. With texts by Philippe Alain Michaud (Curator of the film collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne,Centre Georges Pompidou), Sabine Folie (Director of the Generali Foundation), Hugues Fontenas (architect, lecturer at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture, Paris, Val de Seine) and Jean-Luc Nancy (Prof. emeritus, philosopher)

Abstract: In Photography and Anthropology, Christopher Pinney presents a provocative and readable account of the strikingly parallel histories of the two disciplines, as well as a polemical narrative and overview of the use of photography by anthropologists from the 1840s to the present. Walter Benjamin suggested that photography "make[s] the difference between technology and magic visible as a thoroughly historical variable," and Pinney here explores photography as a divinatory practice that prompted anthropologists to capture the "primitive" lives of those they studied. Early anthropology celebrated p

Abstract: Baba Peter Wee is a fourth generation Straits Chinese Peranakan, whose ancestry can be traced back to Malacca on his maternal side. Born Peter Wee Ban Kheng in 1946 to Wee Guan Hong from Indonesia and Josephine Tan Pin Neo, his name was taken from his maternal grandfather's ji hoh, or family plaque, Kheng Huat.
Abstract: Peter Wee is the first vice-president of the Peranakan Association and a member of the Gunong Sayang Association. He is a leading authority on Peranakan culture - and is regularly consulted by collectoers, institutions and academicians. He is an advisor to both the Peranakan Museum as well as the Baba House of NUK Museums.
Abstract: The term 'Baba' is used to refer to the Straits-born Chinese or Peranakans. The Babas boast a unique culture and way of life that is an amalgamation of Chinese and Malay customs and etiquette. Their culture is perhaps best captured in the beautiful clothing, stunning jewellery, pretty porcelain and other artefacts used in daily living. Girls were taught, from a young age, how to cook a variety of elaborate meals as well as crafts such as beading and embroidery. The result is a rich legacy of splendid kebayas (embroidered blouses), beadwork and various other items. Through lavish, full-colour p

Abstract: BACK COVER COPY** This book forms part of the European Space Agency’s 15th anniversary celebration activities for the 1990 launch of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. As an observatory in space, Hubble is one of the most successful scientific projects of all time, both in terms of scientific output and its immediate public appeal. Hubble creates an enormous impact by exploiting a unique scientific niche where no other instruments can compete. It consistently delivers super-sharp images and clean, uncontaminated spectra over the entire near-infrared and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. This has opened up new scientific territory and resulted in many paradigm-breaking discoveries. Exquisite quality images have enabled astronomers to gain entirely new insights into the workings of a huge range of different astronomical objects. Hubble has provided the visual overview of the underlying astrophysical processes taking place in these objects, ranging from planets in our Solar System to galaxies in the young Universe. Astronomy is fortunate in that telescopes not only produce results of great scientific value, but also of eye-catching beauty and artistic potential. This book shows the close relationship between the two at its best. Hubble’s design remains unique amongst space-based observatories by enabling astronauts to regularly maintain and upgrade it during Space Shuttle Servicing Missions. These have not only kept the telescope at the forefront of scientific capability, but have transformed its performance to heights beyond the dreams of its original designers. FRONT INSIDE FLAP** About the Authors Lars Lindberg Christensen Lars is a science communication specialist heading the Hubble European Space Agency Information Centre group in Munich, Germany where he is responsible for public outreach and education for the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in Europe. Abstract: It may be hard to believe, but there actually was a time when the postcard image was not a cliche. To reach it, you'll have to set your clock back to the end of the nineteenth century, when an Act of Congress allowed Americans to mail a card for just one cent. A few years later, Kodak introduced an easy-to-use and affordable folding camera that put postcard power into the hands of ordinary citizens, setting off a craze.
Note: A selection of these cards was first exhibited under the title Postmarked at the K.S. Art Gallery, New York, May 2004 , Includes interview with artist , Electronic reproduction; Available via World Wide Web
