    Abstract: Ein Blick auf den Umgang der polnischen Regierung mit jüdischen und ukrainischen Minderheiten vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die Beziehungen zwischen dem polnischen Staat und seinen nichtpolnischen Bürgern waren vor 1939 von teils scharfen Auseinandersetzungen geprägt. Doch es gab auch Versuche, die Konflikte in beiderseitigem Einverständnis zu lösen. Diese fanden jenseits der parlamentarischen Bühne statt und wurden in der Regel von Akteuren aus der zweiten Reihe angestoßen. Stephan Stachs Studie untersucht erstmals die Herausbildung eines institutionellen Umfelds, in dem Wissenschaftler, Ministerialbeamte, Abgeordnete und Journalisten Konzepte zur Einbindung nationaler Minderheiten in den polnischen Staat entwickelten. Am Beispiel der jüdischen und ukrainischen Minderheiten in Polen werden Prozesse beleuchtet, die zu einem politischen Vertrauen zwischen den Konfliktparteien beitrugen.

    Abstract: Enigma in Rus and Medieval Slavic Cultures is a thematic essay volume to investigate the history and function of enigma in Orthodox Slavic cultures with a special focus on the cultural history of Rus and Muscovy. Its seventeen case studies across disciplinary boundaries analyze Slavic biblical and patristic translations, liturgical commentaries, occult divinatory texts, and dream interpretations. Slavic riddles inscribed on walls and compilations of riddles in question-and-answer format are all subjects of this volume. Not only written, but also pictorial enigmas are examined, together with their relationships to texts suggesting novel methodologies for their deciphering.     Abstract: In this book, Makarychev and Medvedev examine the importance of biopolitics in fueling Russia’s confrontation with the West. In their view, the development of Putin’s illiberal authoritarianism was largely triggered by what they call a biopolitical turn. This shift is exemplified by the use of an increasing number of regulatory mechanisms to discipline and constrain the human body. Such political practices concern issues of sexuality, reproductive behavior, adoption, fertility, family planning, public hygiene, and demography. This turn created a new disciplinary framework for the population and the elite. Bans and restrictions of a biopolitical nature, became one of the main tools for articulating the rules of belonging in the political community and drawing its political boundaries. Biopolitical discourses have taken up the core of the Russian identity formation, which contrasts a positive “conservative Russia” with a supposedly vicious “liberal West.”

    Abstract: Fotiadis und Voss schildern die politische und sprachliche Situation im nordgriechischen Minderheitensprachraum über das gesamte 20. Jahrhundert: Ausführlich wird die Situation zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts dargestellt, als der griechische und bulgarische Nationalismus die damals noch zum Osmanischen Reich gehörige Region zwischen Kastoria und Drama für sich beanspruchten und um die Loyalität der Bevölkerung kämpften. Auch für die Revivalbewegung der 1990er Jahre wird gefragt, welche Rolle sprachliche Zugehörigkeit bei der Ziehung ethnischer und nationaler Gruppengrenzen spielt. Der Band wird abgeschlossen durch die kommentierte Edition und deutsche Übersetzung zweier griechischer Propagandapamphlete im balkanslawischen Dialekt, der „Prophezeiung Alexanders des Großen" von 1907 und der „Proklamation des Hellenomakedonischen Komitees" von 1905.

    Abstract: Unter den zahlreichen Arbeitsmigranten, die in den 1960ern und 1970ern nach Deutschland zugewandert sind, waren auch Kroaten. Mehrere Hunderttausend Menschen kroatischer Herkunft sind in Deutschland geblieben und leben dort noch heute. Die Studie umfasst rund vierzig Jahre der multilokalen Lebensweise verschiedener Generationen. Ihr Leben hat sich zwischen zwei Orten, einem im Herkunftsland und anderem im Aufnahmeland, abgespielt und oft werden beide als Zuhause angesehen. Die Selbstaussagen der Migranten und ihrer Nachkommen thematisieren ihre Sicherheitswünsche und Rückkehrpläne, Familienstrukturen, Formen der lokalen Eingliederung und Zugehörigkeitsgefühle. Die Studie bietet einen neuen Blick auf die kroatische Migration nach Deutschland und eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die Frage nach Integration von Zuwanderern allgemein.

    Abstract: Haunted Dreams is the first comprehensive study in English devoted to cultural representations of adolescence in Russia since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. Jenny Kaminer situates these cultural representations within the broader context of European and Anglo-American scholarship on adolescence and youth, and she explores how Russian writers, dramatists, and filmmakers have repeatedly turned to the adolescent protagonist in exploring the myriad fissures running through post-Soviet society. Through close analysis of prose, drama, television, and film, this book maps how the adolescent hero has become a locus for multiple anxieties throughout the tumultuous years since the end of the Soviet experiment. Kaminer also directly addresses one of the pivotal questions facing scholars of post-Soviet Russia: have Soviet cultural models been transcended? Or do they continue to dominate? The figure of the adolescent, an especially potent and enduring source of cultural mythology throughout the Soviet years, provides provocative material for exploring these questions. In Haunted Dreams, Kaminer employs a historical approach to reveal how fantasies of adolescence have mutated and remained constant across the Soviet/post-Soviet divide, focusing on violence, temporality, and gender and the body. Some of the works discussed present the possibility of salvaging the model of the heroic adolescent for a new society. Others, by contrast, relegate this figure to the dustbin of history by evoking disgust or horror or by unmasking the tragic consequences that ensue from the combination of adolescence, violence, and fantasy.

    Abstract: Ingredients of Change explores modern Bulgaria's foodways from the Ottoman era to the present, outlining how Bulgarians domesticated and adapted diverse local, regional, and global foods and techniques, and how the nation's culinary topography has been continually reshaped by the imperial legacies of the Ottomans, Habsburgs, Russians, and Soviets, as well as by the ingenuity of its own people. Changes in Bulgarian cooking and cuisine, Mary C. Neuburger shows, were driven less by nationalism than by the circulation of powerful food narratives—scientific, religious, and ethical—along with peoples, goods, technologies, and politics. Ingredients of Change tells this complex story through thematic chapters focused on bread, meat, milk and yogurt, wine, and the foundational vegetables of Bulgarian cuisine—tomatoes and peppers. Neuburger traces the ways in which these ingredients were introduced and transformed in the Bulgarian diet over time, often in the context of Bulgaria's tumultuous political history. She shows how the countries modern dietary and culinary transformations accelerated under a communist dictatorship that had the resources and will to fundamentally reshape what and how people ate and drank.

    Abstract: Enriched by color reproductions of tobacco advertisements, packs, and anti-smoking propaganda, Cigarettes and Soviets provides a comprehensive study of the Soviet tobacco habit. Tricia Starks examines how the Soviets maintained the first mass smoking society in the world while simultaneously fighting it. The book is at once a study of Soviet tobacco deeply enmeshed in its social, political, and cultural context and an exploration of the global experience of the tobacco epidemic. Starks examines the Soviet antipathy to tobacco yet capitulation to market; the development of innovative cessation techniques and clinics and the late entry into global anti-tobacco work; the seeming lack of cultural stimuli alongside massive use; and the expansion of smoking without the conventional prompts of capitalist markets. She tells the story of Philip Morris's "Mission to Moscow" campaign for the Soviet market, the triumph of the quintessential capitalist product-the cigarette-in a communist system, and the successes and failures of the world's first national antismoking campaign. The interplay of male habits and health against largely female tobacco producers and medical professionals adds a gendered dimension.Smoking developed, continued, and grew in the Soviet Union without mass production, intensive advertising, seductive industrial design, or product ubiquity. The Soviets were early to condemn tobacco, and yet, by the end of the twentieth century Russians smoked more heavily than most most other nations in the world. Cigarettes and Soviets challenges interpretations of how tobacco use rose in the past and what leads to mass use today.

    Abstract: "Through staging dialogues between scholars, activists and artists from a variety of disciplinary, geographical and historical specializations, Postcolonial and Postsocialist Dialogues explores the possible resonances and dissonances between the postcolonial and the postsocialist in feminist theorizing and practice. While postcolonial and postsocialist perspectives have been explored in feminist studies, the two analytics tend to be viewed separately. This volume brings together attempts to understand if and how postcolonial and postsocialist dimensions of the human condition - historical, existential, political, and ideological - intersect and correlate in feminist experiences, identities, and struggles. In the three sections that probe the intersections, opacities and challenges between the two discourses, the authors put under pressure what postcolonialism and postsocialism mean for feminist scholarship and activism. The contributions address the emergence of new political and cultural formations as well as circuits of bodies and capital in post-Cold War and postcolonial era in currently re-emerging neo-colonial and imperial conflicts. They engage with issues of gender, sexuality, race, migration, diasporas, indigeneity, and disability, while also developing new analytical tools such as postsocialist precarity, queer postsocialist coloniality, uneventful feminism, feminist opacity, feminist queer crip epistemologies.     Abstract: Die Einzigartigkeit und eine schwierige theoretische Erfassbarkeit der Sprachsituation in Belarus fordern von der Soziolinguistik eine Hinwendung zur Innenperspektive – zu Spracheinstellungen der Sprachverwender, an deren umfassenden Auswertung, die der Komplexität und der Interdisziplinarität des Forschungsgegenstandes gerecht wäre, es fehlt. Das methodische Desiderat ist ein allgemein gültiges Analysemodell von Spracheinstellungen und eine Auswertungsmethode der Diskurse bei ihrer Untersuchung. Auf der Grundlage des sozialpsychologischen Einstellungsmodells und der diskurslinguistischen Mehr-Ebenen-Analyse wird ein Analyseinstrumentarium entwickelt, mit dem die semantische und argumentative Architektur des Forendiskurses über Belarussisch, die diskursiven Grundpositionen, die einzelnen Einstellungskomponenten und die typischen pro- und contra-Argumentationsstrategien systematisch und differenziert erfasst werden. Neben empirischen Erkenntnissen für die Gestaltung sprachplanerischer Tätigkeit in Belarus liefert diese Arbeit ein System von Argumentationsmuster (Topoi), das als Referenzbasis für vergleichbare Studien verwendbar ist, um generalisierend Argumentationstypologien in Bezug auf indominante Nationalsprachen aufzustellen.

    Abstract: The book describes the system of communist censorship in Poland in the years 1948–1958, as well as its effects on the development of literature. It is the first literary studies work which takes up the subject in such broad and systematic terms. The book is divided into three main parts: an attempt at synthesis (theory and practice of censorship), special cases (censorship of specific writers), authorial strategies (the authors’ ways of dealing with censorship) and contexts. The most important conclusion which can be drawn from the research is that out of many small changes emerges an image of a very significant one. Numerous small cuts and alterations build up to an image of Polish literature of the 1940s and 1950s as a whole. A whole that was always dependant on and subservient to politics

    Abstract: Exploring Russian as a pluricentric language, this book provides a panoramic view of its use within and outside the nation and discusses the connections between language, politics, ideologies, and cultural contacts. Russian is widely used across the former Soviet republics and in the diaspora, but speakers outside Russia deviate from the metropolis in their use of the language and their attitudes towards it. Using country case studies from across the former Soviet Union and beyond, the contributors analyze the unifying role of the Russian language for developing transnational connections and show its value in the knowledge economy. They demonstrate that centrifugal developments of Russian and its pluricentricity are grounded in the language and education policies of their host countries, as well as the goals and functions of cultural institutions, such as schools, media, travel agencies, and others created by aemigraes for their co-ethnics. This book also reveals the tensions between Russia's attempts to homogenize the 'Russian world' and the divergence of regional versions of Russian reflecting cultural hybridity of the diaspora. Interdisciplinary in its approach, this book will prove useful to researchers of Russian and post-Soviet politics, Russian studies, Russian language and culture, linguistics, and immigration studies.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Die Herausgeber der "Potsdamer Beiträge zur Sorabistik/Podstupimske pśinoski k Sorbistice" sind erfreut, nach längerer Pause einen neuen Band veröffentlichen zu können. Gemeinschaftlich legen der Kulturwissenschaftler Tobias Preßler, welcher hier debütiert, und der ausgewiesene Denkmalpfleger i. R. Alfred Roggan, vier Artikel zur niedersorbischen Kulturgeschichte vor. Die Autoren widmen sich der sorbischen Sprache im Norden der Niederlausitz, ihrer ehemaligen Verbreitung und den Umständen ihres Verschwindens. Alle Beiträge nähern sich aus unterschiedlicher Perspektive diesem Thema, wobei die Schwerpunkte auf verschiedenen Zeiten und Regionen liegen. Mit Paul Thol wird sich einem Restaurator und Künstler zugewandt, dessen Werk und Schaffen in die bewegte 1. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts fällt. Diese Zeit bildet gleichsam den Abschluss einer epochenübergreifenden Darstellung zur Politik gegenüber den Sorben und ihrer Sprache, welche ein weiterer Artikel skizziert. In den beiden Herzstücken des Bandes wird der Leser in die frühe Neuzeit entführt. Es wird ein bisher wenig beachtetes Druckwerk aus dem Jahre 1694 vorgestellt, das seinerzeit bewusst in zwölf Sprachen herausgegeben wurde. Als wahres Kleinod der sorbischen Sprachgeschichte findet sich dieses Werk - ein Gedicht - überliefert, das in einem nunmehr ausgestorbenen Dialektzweig verfasst ist. Neben dem Gedicht selbst, werden auch dessen bisherige literarische Bearbeitungen sowie der Entstehungshintergrund des Druckes eingehender beschrieben. Der vierte Beitrag widmet sich einer Region, in welcher wohl der gleiche Dialekt wie der des Gedichtes gesprochen wurde. Bis zum Verklingen der Sprache im 18. Jahrhundert war sie hier genauso lebendig wie sie es heute noch in ihrem Kerngebiet ist
