    Abstract: Die kulturelle Perspektive, die im Kontext der Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte bislang (von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen) höchstens als Beiwerk der sozialen Nachhaltigkeit Eingang in den politischen Diskurs fand, etabliert sich nach und nach als eigenständige Dimension der Nachhaltigkeit. Begleitet wird der aufkommende politische Diskurs von einer zunehmenden Intensivierung der wissenschaftlichen Debatte. Der »Kultivierung« der Nachhaltigkeit wird die »Vernachhaltigung« der Kultur gegenübergestellt. Gefragt wird vor allem nach den kulturellen Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen, um den Entwicklungspfad »Nachhaltige Entwicklung« beschreiten zu können. In diesem Band wird »kulturelle Nachhaltigkeit« auf interdisziplinäre und internationale Weise zum Gegenstand der Analyse gemacht, konzeptionell wie exemplarisch. Die Autor/innen untersuchen das facettenreiche Spektrum der Interdependenzen von Kultur und Nachhaltigkeit aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln, wagen aber auch eine (disziplinübergreifende) »Gesamtschau«. Auf dieser Basis wird »kulturelle Nachhaltigkeit« im Spannungsfeld von kulturellem Erbe, Globalisierung und technischem Wandel thematisiert

    Abstract: In welchem gesellschaftlichen Kontext vollzieht sich Elternschaft in Schweden, Frankreich und Deutschland? Welche Auswirkungen könnte die Einführung einzelner familienpolitischer Maßnahmen aus Frankreich oder Schweden in Deutschland haben? Aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive wird in diesem Buch ein systematischer Vergleich der familienpolitischen Leistungen in Schweden, Frankreich und Deutschland vorgenommen. Die deutsche Familienpolitik hat in den letzten Jahren einen Paradigmenwechsel vollzogen. Die Lebensbedingungen für Familien sollen sich verbessern, und die Entscheidung für den Übergang zur Elternschaft soll erleichtert werden. Bei der Einführung des Elternzeit-Gesetzes und des neuen Elterngeldes hat sich die deutsche Familienpolitik stark an den skandinavischen Ländern orientiert, in denen Mütter hohe Erwerbsquoten aufweisen und auch Väter relativ häufig Elternzeit in Anspruch nehmen. Vorbildfunktion für die aktuellen familienpolitischen Debatten in Deutschland hat zudem unser Nachbarland Frankreich, dem es erfolgreich gelingt, seine Geburtenraten nahe dem Bestandserhaltungsniveau zu halten. Inwieweit erscheint für Deutschland ein „Import“ einzelner familienpolitischer Maßnahmen aus Frankreich oder Schweden erfolgversprechend? Kurz gesagt: Was können wir wirklich von den beiden familienpolitisch erfolgreichen Ländern Schweden und Frankreich lernen?

    Abstract: Does culture matter? This question has taken on added significance since fundamentalist revivalism has recently gained ground in different parts of the world. The old controversy between Max Weber and Karl Marx, which centres around the extent to which cultural factors such as social norms and values affect economic growth is of critical importance, particularly because of its policy implications. Indeed, if culture is not an autonomous factor susceptible to influencing economic realities, it should not matter and public authorities can dispense with thinking about cultural interventions. On the other hand, if culture does have a real impact, the question arises as to whether it is conducive or detrimental to economic growth, political liberalization, and the emancipation of individuals among other things. Culture, Institutions, and Development addresses this debate at a concrete level by looking at five important issues: the role of tradition and its influence on development; the role of religion, with special reference to Middle Eastern countries; the role of family, kinship, and ethnic ties in the process of development; the relationship between culture and entrepreneurship; and the relationship between culture and poverty. This collection offers a nuanced view that neither denies nor exaggerates the role of cultural factors in explaining relative growth performances across countries. Instead, the contributors focus on the dynamic, two-way relationship between culture and development in a way that stresses policy stakes and the value of multidisciplinary collaboration between economists, historians and other social scientists.     Abstract: When Nigeria hosted the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, it celebrated a global vision of black nationhood and citizenship animated by the exuberance of its recent oil boom. Andrew Apter's The Pan-African Nation tells the full story of this cultural extravaganza, from Nigeria's spectacular rebirth as a rapidly developing petro-state to its dramatic demise when the boom went bust. According to Apter, FESTAC expanded the horizons of blackness in Nigeria to mirror the global circuits of its economy. By showcasing masks, dances, images, and souvenirs from its many diverse ethnic groups, Nigeria forged a new national culture. In the grandeur of this oil-fed confidence, the nation subsumed all black and African cultures within its empire of cultural signs and erased its colonial legacies from collective memory. As the oil economy collapsed, however, cultural signs became unstable, contributing to rampant violence and dissimulation. The Pan-African Nation unpacks FESTAC as a historically situated mirror of production in Nigeria. More broadly, it points towards a critique of the political economy of the sign in postcolonial Africa.

    Abstract: This collection of essays explores how Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment developments in the earth sciences and related fields (paleontology, mining, archeology, seismology, oceanography, evolution, etc.) impacted on contemporary French culture. They reveal that geological ideas were a much more pervasive and influential cultural force than has hitherto been supposed. From the mid-eighteenth century, with the publication of Buffon's seminal Théorie de la Terre (1749), until the early twentieth century, concepts and figures drawn from the earth sciences inspired some of the most important French philosophers, novelists, political theorists, historians and popularizers of science of the time. This book charts the original and influential ways in which French writers and thinkers, such as Buffon, d'Holbach, Balzac, Sand, Verne, Gide and Malraux, exploited the earth sciences for very different ends. This volume will be of interest to students, researchers and scholars of French literature in the modern period, cultural historians of modern France, scholars of European studies, of French political history, of the History of Ideas or the History of Science as well as researchers in landscape and physical geography.

    Abstract: Trotz der grundsätzlichen Kulturhoheit der Länder fällt in Deutschland die Zuständigkeit für Kultur weitgehend in den Aufgabenbereich der Kommunen. Obwohl der kulturelle und kulturpolitische Standpunkt der leitenden Mitarbeiter kommunaler Kulturverwaltungen ihre Entscheidungen stark beeinflusst, war er bislang kaum Gegenstand von Untersuchungen. Auf der Basis einer deutschlandweit durchgeführten quantitativen Fragebogenerhebung und qualitativer Leitfadeninterviews in Baden-Württemberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sachsen und Thüringen untersucht Patrick Glogner die Einstellungen leitender Mitarbeiter kommunaler Kulturverwaltungen zu Kulturbegriffen, Kulturkonsumenten, kulturpolitischen Konzepten und zum Kulturmanagement. Kultursoziologisch und kulturpolitisch bemerkenswert ist, dass deutliche Unterschiede in den kulturellen Einstellungen bestehen. Hierzu gehören beispielsweise Differenzen im Selbstverständnis als kulturpolitische Akteure, in den Kriterien der Kulturförderung und in der Relevanz von Konzepten wie der Neuen Kulturpolitik oder der Kulturpflege. Die jeweilige Haltung korrespondiert sowohl mit der Jahrgangszugehörigkeit und der regionalen Herkunft als auch mit der Ausbildungs- und Studiensozialisation

    Abstract: Die Globalisierung, wie sie sich im Zuge der Epochenwende von 1989/90, der weltweiten Öffnung der Märkte, der neuen Kommunikationstechnologien und einer beschleunigten Mobilität herausgebildet hat, steht im Begriff, die Welt tiefreichend zu verändern. Soziale, wirtschaftliche, staatliche und kulturelle Identitäten und Vertrautheiten werden zunehmend in Frage gestellt. Von diesen Befunden gehen die in diesem Band publizierten Beiträge aus. Dabei stellen sich Fragen in zwei Richtungen: Wird die Globalisierung dazu führen, daß die Unterschiede und Besonderheiten zwischen den Nationen und Völkern immer mehr verschwinden? Welche kulturellen Kompetenzen sind erforderlich, um die Globalisierung im Sinne eines sozial verträglichen, wirtschaftlich erfolgreichen und damit möglichst gerechten Ausgleichs zu gestalten? Eine dritte durchgängige Perspektive des Bandes ist darin zu sehen, daß hier auch die religiösen, insbesondere christlichen Implikationen der Globalisierung eine ihnen zustehende Beachtung finden. Die Beiträge gehen auf das 8. Deutsch-Amerikanische Kolloquium zurück, das auf Initiative der School of Philosophy der Catholic University, Washington DC, und der Katholischen Sozialwissenschaftlichen Zentralstelle, Mönchengladbach, vom 12. bis 18. August 2004 in Detroit durchgeführt wurde.

    Abstract: Durch die Internationalisierung von Unternehmen und die steigende Zahl von Mitarbeiterentsendungen ins Ausland gewinnt interkulturelles Management zunehmend an Bedeutung. Obwohl sich Deutschland und Frankreich aufgrund ihrer gemeinsamen historischen Basis und der wirtschaftlichen Größe sehr nahe stehen, gibt es tief greifende Unterschiede zwischen beiden Kulturen. Da sie das Verhalten der Menschen prägen und so Kooperationen beeinträchtigen können, müssen sie identifiziert werden, um gegensteuern zu können. Anhand von Erfahrungsberichten deutscher Manager, die mehrere Jahre in Frankreich gelebt und gearbeitet haben, ermittelt Judith Jahn abweichende Kulturstandards in Frankreich aus deutscher Sicht, die bei der Ausführung von Managementaufgaben von Bedeutung sind. Ziel ist, Mitarbeitern, die nach Frankreich entsandt werden, Erklärungen für das Vorkommen bestimmter Kulturstandards zu geben, so dass sie sowohl die fremdkulturellen als auch ihre eigenen Verhaltens- und Arbeitsweisen besser verstehen und auf bestimmte Situationen adäquat reagieren können.

    Abstract: Main description: Die Globalisierung, wie sie sich im Zuge der Epochenwende von 1989/90, der weltweiten Öffnung der Märkte, der neuen Kommunikationstechnologien und einer beschleunigten Mobilität herausgebildet hat, steht im Begriff, die Welt tiefreichend zu verändern. Soziale, wirtschaftliche, staatliche und kulturelle Identitäten und Vertrautheiten werden zunehmend in Frage gestellt.Von diesen Befunden gehen die in diesem Band publizierten Beiträge aus. Dabei stellen sich Fragen in zwei Richtungen: Wird die Globalisierung dazu führen, daß die Unterschiede und Besonderheiten zwischen den Nationen und Völkern immer mehr verschwinden? Welche kulturellen Kompetenzen sind erforderlich, um die Globalisierung im Sinne eines sozial verträglichen, wirtschaftlich erfolgreichen und damit möglichst gerechten Ausgleichs zu gestalten? Eine dritte durchgängige Perspektive des Bandes ist darin zu sehen, daß hier auch die religiösen, insbesondere christlichen Implikationen der Globalisierung eine ihnen zustehende Beachtung finden.Die Beiträge gehen auf das 8. Deutsch-Amerikanische Kolloquium zurück, das auf Initiative der School of Philosophy der Catholic University, Washington DC, und der Katholischen Sozialwissenschaftlichen Zentralstelle, Mönchengladbach, vom 12. bis 18. August 2004 in Detroit durchgeführt wurde.

    Abstract: Dialogue has a long lineage but a relatively recent research tradition. The goal of this volume is to elevate dialogue onto the research agenda by addressing such questions as: how can we make dialogue actionable and effective in organizational practice? How can dialogue inform decision making in a particular problem domain or community of interest when multiple people, groups, and organizations are involved? How can dialogue be utilized to build more vibrant, democratic communities? To what extent can the Internet and new information technology support the dialogical process? How can we describe the relational field that dialogue creates and build a theory of social communication and information processing that explains the organization and dynamics of dialogue, and its implications for psychosocial function? The volume addresses these questions in four sections: the foundations, perspectives, practice and theory of dialogue. By design, the contributors draw from wide-ranging philosophical and disciplinary traditions: anthropology, communication, information, management, neuro-psychology, organization theory, philosophy, psychology, political science, public policy, quantum physics, and sociology. As dialogue attempts to break down the barriers among people, the authors defend a more robust understanding of dialogue that requires scholars and practitioners to move beyond the confines of one academic tradition and to study it in a more comprehensive and integrated way. The disciplinary reach of this title should attract scholars and practitioners interested in the general area of dialogue and communication, as well as related topics such as collaboration, public engagement, citizen participation, deliberative democracy, stakeholder relations, networks, interorganizational relationships, and community building.

    Abstract: In an increasingly globalised world, economic and cultural imperatives can be seen as two of the most powerful forces shaping human behaviour. This book considers the relationship between economics and culture both as areas of intellectual discourse, and as systems of societal organisation. Adopting a broad definition of culture, it explores the economic dimensions of culture, and the cultural context of economics.     Abstract: This book offers a comprehensive account of modern Spanish culture, tracing its dramatic and often unexpected development from its beginnings after the Revolution of 1868 to the present day. Specially-commissioned essays by leading experts provide analyses of the historical and political background of modern Spain, the culture of the major autonomous regions (notably Castile, Catalonia, and the Basque Country), and the country's literature: narrative, poetry, theatre and the essay. Spain's recent development is divided into three main phases: from 1868 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the period of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; and the post-Franco arrival of democracy. The concept of 'Spanish culture' is investigated, and there are studies of Spanish painting and sculpture, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and the modern media. A chronology and guides to further reading are provided, making the volume an invaluable introduction to the politics, literature and culture of modern Spain.
