Abstract: Twenty-nine Breton tales, as told over a series of long winter nights, featuring an ingenious miller, a Jerusalem-bound ant, a mad dash at midnight, and moreIn the late nineteenth century, the folklorist François-Marie Luzel spent countless winter evenings listening to stories told by his neighbors, local Breton farmers and villagers. At these social gatherings, known as veillées, Luzel recorded the tales in unusual detail, capturing a storytelling tradition that is now almost forgotten. The Midnight Washerwoman and Other Tales of Lower Brittany collects twenty-nine stories gathered by Luzel, many translated into English for the first time. The tales are presented in a series of five imaginary veillées, giving readers a unique opportunity to listen in on a long-ago winter's night of storytelling. Some of the stories mix the apparently supernatural with the everyday-as in the title tale, when a mysteriously nocturnal washerwoman causes three handsome lads to flee so quickly they lose their clogs in the process. Others invite listeners to root for the underdog, as when a simple miller outwits a powerful seigneur. Another tale must have been greeted with raucous laughter as it recounts an ascending ladder of obstacles-from a mouse to a cat to a man to God (or the Devil) himself-confronted by a traveling ant. Michael Wilson, the volume's editor and translator, provides a substantive introduction that discusses Luzel's work and the significance of Breton storytelling

Abstract: Folklore, People and Place is a contribution towards better understanding the complex interconnectivity of folklore, people and place, across a range of different cultural and geographical contexts. The book showcases a range of international case studies from different cultural and ecological contexts showing how folklore can and does mediate human relationships with people and place. Folklore has traditionally been connected to place, telling tales of the land and the real and imaginary beings that inhabit storied places. These storytelling traditions and practices have endured in a contemporary world, yet the role and value of folklore to people and places has changed. The book explores a broad range of international perspectives and considers how the relationship between folklore, people, and place has evolved for tourists and indigenous communities. It will showcase a range of international case studies from different cultural and ecological contexts showing how folklore can and does mediate human relationships with people and place. By exploring folklore in the context of tourism, this book engages in a critical discussion of the opportunities and challenges of using storied places in destination development. The case studies in the book provide an international perspective on the contemporary value of folklore to people and places engendering reflection on the role of folklore in sustainable tourism strategies. This book will be of interest to students, academics, researchers in fields such as anthropology, folklore, tourism, religious studies, human geography and related disciplines. It will also be of interest to scholars and practitioners of traditional ecological knowledge

Abstract: "This work throws light on the areas of space and time, nature and culture, spirit and matter in the folktales that nurture systemic thinking. It identifies and explores motifs and patterns in select folktales that promote interconnectedness, interdependence, holism, synthesis, and circular pattern of life and examines the ecological relevance of folktales in fostering a systematic view of life. The volume discusses why it is important to critically analyse alternative worldviews in order to find holistic solutions to contemporary global ecological issues. It sheds light upon Ecofemiotics as a discipline, a portmanteau of Ecofeminist Semiotics, and through a re-reading of folktales, it puts forward an innovative folktale typology which connects women with environment. The book discusses an ecofemiotics cyclical praxis at three levels, - Promoting theory to practice through the analysis of folktales as Gaia Care Narratives using the Ecofemiotic framework; - Enabling practice to theory, through a classroom experiment, observation, and inference; and - Envisioning theory to practice, through the identification of Gaia Care Principles and its multidisciplinary hands-on scope and function to create avenues towards ecological balance and sustainable living. Inspired by the hearts that tell stories of love, care, nurture, and the Earth, this nuanced work will be of interest to students and researchers of literature and literary theory, sociology, social anthropology, gender studies and women's studies, feminism, development studies, environment, and folklore studies"--...

Abstract: "Djeha-also known as Juha, Jeh'a, and Ch'ha, among many variations-is an iconic figure, the trickster hero of an oral folktale tradition that has existed for centuries. The famous Maghrebian prankster is a poor, cunning, and resourceful character that delights in immoral behavior. Orientalists Auguste Moulie̹ras (1855-1931) and Rene̹ Basset (1855-1924) were among the first Frenchmen to collect and translate popular Berber folktales. Today, trickster folktales from Algeria's mountainous Kabylia region are not well known in the Anglophone world, even though they continue to be highly popular in France and in North Africa. Djeha, the North African Trickster is an annotated, critical translation of Auguste Moulie̹ras's folktale collection Les Fourberies de Si Djeh'a, first published in French in 1892. The volume contains sixty tales and an in-depth introduction in which Christa C. Jones discusses jocular literature in Islam, the widespread oral folktale tradition linked to Djeha and his Turkish twin brother Nasreddin Hoca, and the impact of colonialism on the gathering and dissemination of the tales. The trickster is at the center of six themed chapters: "Family and Kinship"; "Animal Tales"; "Faces, Places, or Daily Life in the Village"; "Foodways"; "The Intricacies of Hospitality: Beware of Friends and Foes!"; and "Religion, Death, and the Afterlife." Each chapter contains ten folktales preceded by a short introduction that contextualizes the pieces using historical, folkloristic, literary, and ethnographical sources. Ultimately, the book contributes to the preservation of an ancestral oral heritage, delivering this enduring character to new audiences"--

This is the third of three collections dedicated to the Portuguese folktale in North America (Canada, California, and Massachusetts). The present volume, which contributes to preserving an ancient, disappearing tradition, consists of 82 folktales of Indo-European character recorded in Taunton, Massachusetts. Most were told by Guilherme Alexandre da Silveira, a septuagenarian from the island of Flores, who was one the last surviving great storytellers from the Azores, and perhaps all of Europe. The tales were faithfully transcribed from recordings, including numerous archaisms, regionalisms, and some of the Anglicisms that characterize immigrant speech. The introduction, in Portuguese and English, presents an overview of Portuguese immigration to New England. Each tale is preceded by an English summary, and is classified according to Hans-Jörg Uther's international catalog. There follow sections dedicated to the Portuguese-speaking world (Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Goa, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Timor) and the Iberian cultural area (Spain, Latin America and the Sephardim). This book, which is of great linguistic value, ends with five appendices: vocabulary, informants, motifs, and two appendices dedicated to tale types. The first classifies the stories included here; the second brings together all the tales found in the three North American collections"--

Abstract: "This comparative anthology showcases the rich and mutually intertwined folklore of three ethno-religious communities from northern Iraq: Aramaic-speaking ('Syriac') Christians, Kurdish Muslims and-to a lesser extent-Aramaic-speaking Jews. The first volume contains several introductory chapters on language, folkore motifs and narrative style, followed by samples of glossed texts in each language variety. The second volume is the anthology proper, presenting folklore narratives in several distinct varieties of North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic and Northern and Central Kurdish. The stories are accompanied by English translations. The material includes different genres such as folktales, legends, fables and anecdotes, and is organised into seven thematic units. The folkloristic material of these three communities is shared to a large extent. The anthology is, therefore, a testament to the intimate and long-standing relations between these three ethno-religious communities-relations that existed in a multilingual environment centuries before the modern era of nationalism."--Publisher's website

Abstract: "This is the first book-length study in the West on the folk epics of the Han Chinese people, who are the majority population of China. These folk epics provide an unparalleled resource for understanding the importance of "the local" in Chinese culture, especially how rice-growing populations perceived their environment and relational world. The folk epics were sung by illiterate farmers while working in the rice paddy or boating along the waterways. It was believed that singing promoted crop fertility and that the rice-plant embodied a female rice spirit whose growth and development paralleled that of human sexuality and procreation. Regarded as "vulgar" due to its erotic content, this song tradition was marginalized and little understood. The erotic content is often removed in editions directed at a national readership. Employing perspectives from memory studies, eco-criticism, and the study of oral traditions, this book examines in detail five iconic folk epics. The author draws on interviews with contemporary song transmitters and ethnologists from the Lake Tai region, as well as a collection of singer transcripts and unedited song material"--

Abstract: -- Tim Robinson was a cartographer, artist, and writer whose scrupulous and lovingly-detailed records of the West of Ireland, its landscape, its people, and its distinctive languages were lauded, hugely influential, and are revered in Irish studies. These publications include Pilgrimage (1986) which won the Irish Book Awards literature medal, and what is referred to as his "Connemara Trilogy," a prize-winning trio of books which studies the link between place and people in the West of Ireland. Robinson died in 2020 from COVID. Liam Mac Con Iomaire was a writer and broadcaster who served as Director of the Modern Irish Language Laboratory at University College Dublin. His previous publications inlcude Ireland of the Proverb (Townhouse, 1988). He is particularly well-regarded by those who work in the Irish language. He died unexpectedly in May 2019. In their previous collaboration, the translators earned the MLA's Louis Roth Award for Cré na Cille / Graveyard Clay (Yale UP 2016). -- There are some books which are of enduring cultural, critical, and historical importance to their field, and this is one. After centuries of colonization and concerted efforts to eradicate Irish language, folklife, and culture from Ireland, the importance of artifacts such as this work cannot be overstated. It is of critical academic and general interest. -- As a new series, Irish Culture, Memory, Place has included the work of one rising Irish star, the innovative collaborative work of two established and highly-regarded American academics, and an edited volume which speaks both to the memorialization of Irish history as well as to the issues facing women in the current moment. What we are lacking as we establish ourselves is an engagement with the Irish language. With the publication of this title, the final work of two luminaries in the field, we will secure a

Abstract: A treasury of astonishing mythic marvels—and the surprising truths behind themAdrienne Mayor is renowned for exploring the borders of history, science, archaeology, anthropology, and popular knowledge to find historical realities and scientific insights—glimmering, long-buried nuggets of truth—embedded in myth, legends, and folklore. Combing through ancient texts and obscure sources, she has spent decades prospecting for intriguing wonders and marvels, historical mysteries, diverting anecdotes, and hidden gems from antiquity, medieval, and modern times. Flying Snakes and Griffin Claws is a treasury of fifty of her most amazing and amusing discoveries. The book explores such subjects as how mirages inspired legends of cities in the sky; the true identity of winged serpents in ancient Egypt; how ghost ships led to the discovery of the Gulf Stream; and the beauty secrets of ancient Amazons. Other pieces examine Arthur Conan Doyle’s sea serpent and Geronimo’s dragon; Flaubert’s obsession with ancient Carthage; ancient tattooing practices; and the strange relationship between wine goblets and women’s breasts since the times of Helen of Troy and Marie Antoinette. Abstract: This exciting new anthology gathers together Puerto Rican folktales that were passed down orally for generations before finally being transcribed beginning in 1914 by the team of famous anthropologist Franz Boas. These charming tales give readers a window into the imaginations and aspirations of Puerto Rico's peasants, the Jíbaro. Some stories provide a distinctive Caribbean twist on classic tales including "Snow White" and "Cinderella." Others fictionalize the lives of local historical figures, such as infamous pirate Roberto Cofresí, rendered here as a Robin Hood figure who subverts the colonial social order. The collection also introduces such beloved local characters as Cucarachita Martina, the kind cockroach who falls in love with Ratoncito Pérez, her devoted mouse husband who brings her delicious food.
Abstract: Including a fresh English translation of each folktale as well as the original Spanish version, the collection also contains an introduction from literary historian Rafael Ocasio that highlights the historical importance of these tales and the Jíbaro cultural values they impart. These vibrant, funny, and poignant stories will give readers unique insights into Puerto Rico's rich cultural heritage.

Abstract: "Beginning in 1913, curious U.S. scientists eagerly performed field research in the new American colony of Puerto Rico, studying its geology, archaeology, botany, and zoology. Under the direction of anthropologist and folklorist Franz Boas, the project also included the documentation of hundreds of oral folk stories told through generations, highlighting popular Puerto Rican characters immersed in the island's social and cultural practices of the peasant, or Jíbaro. Characters from international fairy tales, such as Snow White and Cinderella, were modified to fit Puerto Rican surroundings in exciting, unique adaptations. Other tales included cursed characters turned into animals, or stories that reflected a strong connection to Jíbaro agrarian traditions. Characters like Juan Bobo stand out even today as personifications of the universal traits of human resilience ascribed to the Puerto Rican Jíbaro. Folk legends of historical characters, such as the infamous Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, reflect the island's colonial status, including the economic restrictions that led to his rise as a notorious thief. Finally, no anthology of Puerto Rican oral folklore would be complete without a few versions of Cucarachita Martina, the kind cockroach who falls in love with Ratoncito Pérez, her beloved mouse husband. Whether you are encountering these stories for the first time, or have heard them your whole life, this delightful bilingual collection will be sure to tickle your heart and your funny bone, and leave you fascinated once again with the island of Puerto Rico"--

Abstract: Alluring, nurturing, dangerous, and vulnerable the yamamba, or Japanese mountain witch, has intrigued audiences for centuries. What is it about the fusion of mountains with the solitary old woman that produces such an enigmatic figure? And why does she still call to us in this modern, scientific era? Co-editors Rebecca Copeland and Linda C. Ehrlich first met the yamamba in the powerful short story "The Smile of the Mountain Witch" by acclaimed woman writer Ōba Minako. The story revealed the compelling way creative women can take charge of misogynistic tropes, invert them, and use them to tell new stories of female empowerment. This unique collection represents the creative and surprising ways artists and scholars from North America and Japan have encountered the yamamba

Abstract: In 1906 two Kurdish singers from Urfa, Sheikh Bozan and Ayib Agha Temir, dictated epics and stories from their repertoire to the German scholar Oskar Mann. The fourteen pieces, rediscovered in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Humanities and Sciences, are presented here for the first time in a bilingual historical edition. Half of the texts deal with the history of Kurdish Milan confederation and its leaders, especially with Ibrahim Pasha Milli (1843-1908). They include a hitherto unknown beautiful lament from the 1840s by the wife of the Milan leader who fell in battle. The second half are mostly well-known epics, among them a surprising first variant of "Dewresh, son of Evdi", two examples of "Mem and Zin" and the earliest long version of "Siyamed (Siyabend and Xece)" to be recorded. Mann's collection is the lost sibling of the two canonical collections by Albert v. Le Coq (1903) and Hugo Makas (1900/1926). All three are from the same decade and document the literature of the Kurdish tribes of the Kurdish Southwest. Difficult passages in the texts were unraveled in cooperation with members of the Berazi confederation to which the singer Sheikh Bozan belonged. Their comments are included in the introduction and footnotes, together with detailed background information. The introduction deals, among other things, with the concept of history shaping these texts, typical of an oral society, and with the local network of singers and the transmission of epics between Urfa and Afrin

Abstract: Katarina Šrimpf Vendramin v monografiji Zgodbe in prostor raziskuje in predstavlja ustno izročilo zgornjega Obsotelja, ki leži ob slovensko-hrvaški meji. V prvem delu prikaže historiat zbiranja in objavljanja pripovednega izročila, v drugem pa predstavi sodobno terensko gradivo in analizo besedil, teksture in konteksta. Raziskava izpostavlja vlogo in pomen slovstvene folklore v družbenem in kulturnem življenju obravnavanega območja. Skozi etiološke povedke, zgodovinske zgodbe ter povedke o bajnih bitjih sta predstavljena koncepta liminalnega prostora-časa (kronotopa) in povezava ustnega izročila z ustvarjanjem kolektivnih identitet in kolektivnega spomina.

As native Palestinians, the authors are well suited to their task. Over the course of several years, they collected tales from the regions of the Galilee, Gaza, and the West Bank, determining which were the most widely known and appreciated and selecting the ones that best represent the Palestinian Arab folk narrative tradition. Abstract: Striking, inexplicable stories circulate among the people of Nuevo León in northern Mexico. Stories of conversos (converted Jews) who fled the Inquisition in Spain and became fabulously wealthy in Mexico. Stories of women and children buried in walls and under houses. Stories of an entire, secret city hidden under modern-day Monterrey. All these stories have no place or corroboration in the official histories of Nuevo León. In this pioneering ethnography, Marie Theresa Hernández explores how the folktales of Nuevo León encode aspects of Nuevolenese identity that have been lost, repressed, or fetishized in "legitimate" histories of the region. She focuses particularly on stories regarding three groups: the Sephardic Jews said to be the "original" settlers of the region, the "disappeared" indigenous population, and the supposed "barbaric" society that persists in modern Nuevo León. Hernández's explorations into these stories uncover the region's complicated history, as well as the problematic and often fascinating relationship between history and folklore, between officially accepted "facts" and "fictions" that many Nuevoleneses believe as truth

Abstract: Bringing together scholars from Europe, America, and Australia, this volume explores the more fantastic elements of popular religious belief: ghosts, werewolves, spiritualism, animism, and of course, witchcraft. These traditional religious beliefs and practices are frequently treated as marginal in more synthetic studies of witchcraft and popular religion, yet Protestants and Catholics alike saw ghosts, imps, werewolves, and other supernatural entities as populating their world. Embedded within notarial and trial records are accounts that reveal the integration of folkloric and theological elements in early modern spirituality. Drawing from extensive archival research, the contributors argue for the integration of such beliefs into our understanding of late medieval and early modern Europe

Abstract: Originally published in 1955, The Silver Cradle is the story of a year in the life of the Mexican American people of San Antonio, Texas. During the 1950s, Julia Nott Waugh recorded the performances of such seasonal and religious traditions as Las Posadas, Los Pastores, Las Calaveras, the Blessing of the Animals, the liturgical observances of Holy Week, and festivities of el diez y seis de septiembre (Mexican Independence Day), among others. Although years have passed and many of the details of observances have changed, the festival calendar and the joy and sincerity of the Mexican American people in honoring its customs and obligations have not disappeared. Now, in fact, a much wider population shares and appreciates the pageantry preserved for us by people like Graciana Reyes, in whose prized silver cradle the Christ Child slept every year at Christmas, and like Doroteo Domínguez, whose annual devotion to presenting a thousand-year-old pastoral epic in his back yard was legendary. Waugh has done much more than just open a window onto a charming past. She has captured for us one of the true gifts of our Mexican American heritage-the willingness to ritually celebrate the passage of time and to embellish the occasions with sensitivity and fervor. This book will appeal to the general reader as well as to those interested in folk traditions and Mexican American culture

Abstract: Tales of the werewolf are well established as a sub-strand of the popular horror genre; less widely known is how far back in time their provenance lies. This is the first book in any language devoted to the werewolf tales that survive from antiquity, exploring their place alongside witches, ghosts, demons, and soul-flyers in a shared story-world

Abstract: "And Other Neighborly Names"-the title is from a study by Americo Paredes of the names, complimentary and otherwise, exchanged across cultural boundaries by Anglos and Mexicans-is a collection of essays devoted to various aspects of folk tradition in Texas. The approach builds on the work of the folklorists who have helped give the study of folklore in Texas such high standing in the field-Mody Boatright, J. Frank Dobie, John Mason Brewer, the Lomaxes, and of course Paredes himself, to whom this book is dedicated. Focusing on the ways in which traditions arise and are maintained where diverse peoples come together, the editors and other essayists-John Holmes McDowell, Joe Graham, Alicia María González, Beverly J. Stoeltje, Archie Green, José E. Limón, Thomas A. Green, Rosan A. Jordan, Patrick B. Mullen, and Manuel H. Peña-examine conjunto music, the corrido, Gulf fishermen's stories, rodeo traditions, dog trading and dog-trading tales, Mexican bakers' lore, Austin's "cosmic cowboy" scene, and other fascinating aspects of folklore in Texas. Their emphasis is on the creative reaction to socially and culturally pluralistic situations, and in this they represent a distinctively Texan way of studying folklore, especially as illustrated in the performance-centered approach of Paredes, Boatright, and others who taught at the University of Texas at Austin. As an overview of this approach-its past, present, and future-"And Other Neighborly Names" makes a valuable contribution both to Texas folklore and to the discipline as a whole

Abstract: Knowledge of folk custom and folk belief can help to explain ways of thought and behavior in modern America. American Folklife, a unique collection of essays dedicated to the presentation of American tradition, broadens our understanding of the regional differences and ethnic folkways that color American life. Folklife research examines the entire context of everyday life in past and present. It includes every aspect of traditional life, from regional architecture through the full range of material culture into spiritual culture, folk religion, witchcraft, and other forms of folk belief. This collection is especially useful in its application to American society, where countless influences from European, American Indian, and African cultural backgrounds merge. American Folklife relates folklife research to history, anthropology, cultural geography, architectural history, ethnographic film, folk technology, folk belief, and ethnic tensions in American society. It documents the folk-cultural background that is the root of our society
