    Abstract: This compilation of original essays by an international cast of economists, regulators and industry practitioners analyzes some of the major issues now facing postal and delivery services throughout the world as competition from information and communication technologies (ICT) has increased. Competition has become increasingly important in the postal sector for some time in the form of alternative entrants providing mail delivery. However, the competition from ICT in the form of email and instant messaging, the Internet, Facebook and other forms of social networking and portable wireless devices such as the iPad and Kindle may be even more significant. Mail volumes are falling and the economies of scale that have made possible daily deliveries to every address are being eroded. This book assesses volume these declines resulting from this so-called ‘eSubstituion’ and looks at the ways the postal sector can adapt to the rapid changes resulting from ICT. The impact of electronic invoicing on transactions mail, and the impact on bulk mail of electronic forms of advertising are examined. Strategies, including pricing and access policies, are discussed in the context of the increasing impact of ICT. A rethinking of the role of mail in an electronic age is taking place and this book provides the cutting-edge of this rethinking and the attempts of POs to reinvent themselves while continuing to meet the public’s expectation of continuing ubiquitous daily deliveries of traditional mail products.

    Abstract: Considering Animals draws on the expertise of scholars trained in the biological sciences, humanities, and social sciences to investigate the complex and contradictory relationships humans have with nonhuman animals. Taking their cue from the specific 'animal moments' that punctuate these interactions, the essays engage with contemporary issues and debates central to human-animal studies: the representation of animals, the practical and ethical issues inseparable from human interactions with other species, and, perhaps most challengingly, the compelling evidence that animals are themselves considering beings. Case studies focus on issues such as animal emotion and human 'sentimentality'; the representation of animals in contemporary art and in recent films such as March of the Penguins, Happy Feet, and Grizzly Man; animals' experiences in catastrophic events such as Hurricane Katrina and the SARS outbreak; and the danger of overvaluing the role humans play in the earth's ecosystems. Der Band dokumentiert die Beiträge von Wissenschaftlern aus den Bereichen Informatik, Biologie und Philosophie zu einer Tagung, die sich mit der Bedeutung von Begriffen befasste, die vor allem in der neuesten biologisch-genetischen Forschung verwendet werden.
    Abstract: In der Wissensgesellschaft" finden informationswissenschaftliche Metaphern zunehmend Verbreitung. Begriffe wie Information" oder Gen" haben nicht nur eine die Forschung beeinflussende Wirkung in verschiedenen bio-, sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, sondern sie beeinflussen zugleich die Konstitution und Veränderung von Menschenbildern" in Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft. Die dabei in die lebenswissenschaftliche Forschung eingebrachten anthropologischen Prämissen wie Konsequenzen müssen kritisch analysiert und nach ihren Geltungsbedingungen hinterfragt werden, um zu einem dem jeweilig angestrebten Zweck angemessenen Verständnis vom Menschen zu gelangen. Dies betrifft Verwendungsweisen und -möglichkeiten des Informationsbegriffs sowie eine methodologisch und philosophisch gesicherte Rekonstruktion des Gebrauchs von Metaphern und Modellen in verschiedenen Forschungsbereichen, in denen mit einem impliziten Verständnis vom Menschen gearbeitet wird. Die Tagung, aus der dieser Sammelband hervorgeht, befasste sich mit der Bedeutung metaphorischer Ausdrücke besonders dem der Information" , die vor allem in der neuesten biologisch-genetischen Forschung benutzt werden. Darüber hinaus haben diese Metaphern einen erheblichen Einfluss auf Theorien zukünftiger Lebensumstände des Menschen, zum Beispiel der Ambient Intelligence bzw. der Robotik.     Abstract: When Nigeria hosted the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, it celebrated a global vision of black nationhood and citizenship animated by the exuberance of its recent oil boom. Andrew Apter's The Pan-African Nation tells the full story of this cultural extravaganza, from Nigeria's spectacular rebirth as a rapidly developing petro-state to its dramatic demise when the boom went bust. According to Apter, FESTAC expanded the horizons of blackness in Nigeria to mirror the global circuits of its economy. By showcasing masks, dances, images, and souvenirs from its many diverse ethnic groups, Nigeria forged a new national culture. In the grandeur of this oil-fed confidence, the nation subsumed all black and African cultures within its empire of cultural signs and erased its colonial legacies from collective memory. As the oil economy collapsed, however, cultural signs became unstable, contributing to rampant violence and dissimulation. The Pan-African Nation unpacks FESTAC as a historically situated mirror of production in Nigeria. More broadly, it points towards a critique of the political economy of the sign in postcolonial Africa.

    Abstract: Addressing a key issue related to human nature, this book argues that the first-person experience of pure consciousness may soon be under threat from posthuman biotechnology. In exploiting the mind's capacity for instrumental behavior, posthumanists seek to extend human experience by physically projecting the mind outward through the continuity of thought and the material world, as through telepresence and other forms of prosthetic enhancements. Posthumanism envisions a biology/machine symbiosis that will promote this extension, arguably at the expense of the natural tendency of the mind to move toward pure consciousness. As each chapter of this book contends, by forcibly overextending and thus jeopardizing the neurophysiology of consciousness, the posthuman condition could in the long term undermine human nature, defined as the effortless capacity for transcending the mind's conceptual content. Presented here for the first time, the essential argument of this book is more than a warning; it gives a direction: far better to practice patience and develop pure consciousness and evolve into a higher human being than to fall prey to the Faustian temptations of biotechnological power. As argued throughout the book, each person must choose for him or herself between the technological extension of physical experience through mind, body and world on the one hand, and the natural powers of human consciousness on the other as a means to realize their ultimate vision.
