    Abstract: Games are a unique art form. Game designers don't just create a world; they create who you will be in that world. They tell you what abilities to use and what goals to take on. In other words, games work in the medium of agency. This book explores what games have to teach us about our own rationality and agency. We have the capacity for a peculiar sort of motivational inversion. For some of us, winning is not the point. We take on an interest in winning temporarily, so that we can play the game. Thus, we are capable of taking on temporary and disposable ends. At the center of this book is a view about games as communicative artifacts. Games are a way of recording forms of agency; they are a library of agencies. And exploring that library can help us develop our own agency and autonomy.

    Abstract: Die Idylle steht im Spannungsfeld von Kitsch und Katastrophe, das Nils Jablonski durch medienkomparatistische close readings literarischer, filmischer und televisiver Texte untersucht. In der Perspektive einer materialen Topik wird das vielfältige Verkommen der Idylle anhand ihrer Poetizität, Medialität und Serialität analysiert – beginnend bei den Anfängen in der Antike, über die Popularisierung der Idylle im 18. Jahrhundert bis zu gegenwärtigen Filmen und TV-Serien. Die herausgearbeitete Spezifik idyllischer poiesis kennzeichnet zudem die richtungsweisenden Reflexionen zur Idylle um 1800. Mit kritischem Bezug auf die idyllischen Verfahren der Überlagerung, Idealisierung und Beschränkung bei Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Schiller und Jean Paul wird die enge gattungstheoretische Bestimmung der Idylle revidiert, um den kulturkonstitutiven Aspekt des materialen Topos strukturell zu erfassen. The scope and aim of this new Oxford Handbook of Neurolinguistics is to provide students and scholars with concise overviews of the state of the art in particular topic areas, and to engage a broad audience with an interest in the neurobiology of language. The chapters do not attempt to provide exhaustive coverage, but rather present discussions of prominent questions posed by a given topic. Part I covers the key techniques and technologies used to study the neurobiology of language today. Part II addresses the neurobiology of language acquisition during healthy development and in response to challenges presented by congenital and acquired conditions. Part III covers the many facets of the articulate brain, and its capacity for language production: written, spoken, and signed. Questions regarding how the brain comprehends meaning, including emotions, at word and discourse levels are addressed in Part IV. The chapters in Part I, Foundations, are concerned with basic questions related to different types of referring expression and their interpretation.     Abstract: This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

    Abstract: We all know that speech can be harmful. But what are the harms and how exactly does the speech in question brings those harms about? Mary Kate McGowan identifies a previously overlooked mechanism by which speech constitutes, rather than merely causes, harm. She argues that speech constitutes harm when it enacts a norm that prescribes that harm. McGowan illustrates this theory by considering many categories of speech including sexist remarks, racist hate speech, pornography, verbal triggers for stereotype threat, micro-aggressions, political dog whistles, slam poetry, and even the hanging of posters. 'Just Words' explores a variety of harms - such as oppression, subordination, discrimination, domination, harassment, and marginalisation - and ways in which these harms can be remedied.

Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Abstract: Wir interpretieren nicht nur Texte und haben dafür eine besondere „hermeneutische Kunst“ (Schleiermacher) entwickelt, sondern wir interpretieren auch die Welt um uns. Die Untersuchung geht der Frage nach, welche expliziten und impliziten Regeln in der Praxis der Interpretation angewandt werden. Der erste Teil klärt u.a. den Begriff der Interpretation, das Verhältnis von Lesen und Interpretieren und analysiert die traditionelle Metaphorik der Interpretation. Im zweiten Teil werden Paradigmen der Interpretation untersucht: die mantische Deutung von Orakeln und Träumen, die philologische Interpretation literarischer Texte, die alltägliche Deutung einer Physiognomie und die kriminalistische Deutung von Spuren. Im Horizont von Rhetorik, Philologie und Hermeneutik werden in den folgenden Kapiteln antike, mittelalterliche und neuzeitliche, jüdische und christliche Interpretationslehren und danach die neuzeitliche Entwicklung der Hermeneutik als Wissenschaft behandelt. Das Abschlusskapitel fasst Regeln der Interpretation von Texten zusammen

    Abstract: In den literaturwissenschaftlichen Debatten über den Begriff der ‚politischen Literatur‘ dominierte bislang eine oftmals polemische Entgegensetzung von ‚ästhetischer Autonomie‘ und ‚Engagement‘, von ‚reiner Kunst‘ und ‚Tendenzliteratur‘, von Poesie und Politik. Dieser Band nimmt das lange vernachlässigte Thema wieder auf und zeigt, dass eine dichotomisierende Konzeption des Gegenstands nicht weiterführt und letztlich nicht haltbar ist. Die Beiträge zielen auf eine systematische Revision des Begriffs ‚politische Literatur‘, seiner poetologischen Konzeptionierungen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Modellierungen. Das Politische wird als Reflexionsraum der Literatur unter drei verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet: „Poetik und theoretische Reflexionen“, „Positionierungen im Feld des Politischen und Referenzbezüge“ sowie „Ästhetische Verfahren und Schreibweisen“.     Abstract: Die digitale Verfügbarkeit großer Textmengen und ihre umfassende Vernetzung beeinflussen unseren Umgang mit Sprache und Geschriebenem. Dieser wissenschaftliche Essay beschreibt den Wandel der Sprachauffassung, der sich durch Digitalisierung und Vernetzung gerade vollzieht, und zeigt die Konsequenzen in Bildungsinstitutionen, Sprachpolitik und bis hinein in unseren Alltag: In der SMS-Kommunikation erhalten wir Formulierungsvorschläge oder wir sprechen mit einem künstlichen Gesprächspartner in unserem Smartphone. Wie jedoch dieser Prozess die zeitgenössische Literatur prägt, erfährt seit der enthusiastischen Erforschung von Hypertexten um die Jahrtausendwende wenig kulturwissenschaftliche Aufmerksamkeit. Dabei lohnt es sich, die Beobachtungsperspektive von der Literatur im Netz auf das Netz in der Literatur zu verschieben. Denn informations- und kommunikationstechnologische Netzwerke - und vor allem das Internet - schreiben sich zunehmend in die Romane der Gegenwart ein. Nicht selten avanciert das ›Netz der Netze‹ sogar zum inhaltlichen Kernelement von erzählten Welten und wird dort vielfältig wirksam: von der räumlichen und temporalen Inszenierung des Motivs über das Zusammenspiel von Figurenkonstellationen und Erzähltechnik bis hin zur formalästhetischen und symbolischen Ausgestaltung der Texte.     Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Taboo Words and Language defines taboo as a proscription of behaviour for a specifiable community of one or more persons at a specifiable time in specifiable contexts. What is in fact tabooed is the use of those words and language in certain contexts; in short, the taboo applies to instances of language behaviour. For behaviour to be proscribed it must be perceived as in some way harmful to an individual or their community but the degree of harm can fall anywhere on a scale from a breach of etiquette to out-and-out fatality. All tabooed behaviours are deprecated and they lead to social if not legal sanction. Taboos are described and the reasons and beliefs behind them are investigated.
