    Abstract: This 2004 book showcases research and theory about the way in which the social environment shapes, and is shaped by, emotion. The book has three sections, each of which addresses a different level of sociality: interpersonal, intragroup, and intergroup. The first section refers to the links between specific individuals, the second to categories that define multiple individuals as an entity, and the final to the boundaries between groups. Emotions are found in each of these levels and the dynamics involved in these types of relationship are part of what it is to experience emotion. The chapters show how all three types of social relationships generate, and are generated by, emotions. In doing so, this book locates emotional experiences in the larger social context

    Abstract: Why do ethnic riots break out when and where they do? Why do some governments try to prevent ethnic riots while others do nothing or even participate in the violence? In this book, Steven I. Wilkinson uses collected data on Hindu-Muslim riots, socio-economic factors and competitive politics in India to test his theory that riots are fomented in order to win elections and that governments decide whether to stop them or not based on the likely electoral cost of doing so. He finds that electoral factors account for most of the state-level variation in Hindu-Muslim riots: explaining for example why riots took place in Gujarat in 2002 but not in many other states where militants tried to foment violence. The general electoral theory he develops for India is extended to Ireland, Malaysia and Romania as Wilkinson shows that similar political factors motivate ethnic violence in many different countries.

    Abstract: In this volume the focus is on the interrelations of the global and the local in their consequences for work. The process of restructuring of work is analyzed as an ongoing, locally situated process in which actors within work organizations play an important role. Nevertheless, when taking the context of work organizations into account, the increasing importance of the global on the local processes is obvious. Local practices keep their central importance, but the global doesn't function only as a context for the local anymore but forms more and more a practice of itself in which an increasing number of actors play their part.As we can see on the World Wide Web, people and firms are both emitters and receptors and act on the local and global level at the same time. Local diversity in a world with increasing interdependencies is shown in a number of contributions from different parts of the world. These contributions are clustered around two main themes: Labor markets in global and local scenarios - From industry to services; Global industries - Restructuring and local jobs. The many case studies presented shed light to the diversity that occurs in different local situations

    Abstract: This is the first book to bring together recent scholarship on the history of psychology and race. Throughout the history of the field, psychological discourse has been shaped by social concerns, and its discourse on race is no exception. Psychologists have both promoted and fought against racism, and a nuanced historical account requires analysis of both dimensions. The contributors seek to understand the relationship between the changes in the field and broader social change by mapping the changing discourse for "defining difference" through race. Topics covered include essentialism and the history of the concept of race, ideas of race in the work of nineteenth-century and twentieth-century psychologists, psychological discourse on topics such as "mixed-race" people, political uses of racial research, changes in textbook presentations of race and intelligence, and international perspectives on psychology and race. Contributors also examine the prominence and persistence of American research on racial differences in intelligence as well as the work of Kenneth Clark and Horace Mann Bond in combating racism in science and society.     Abstract: Arnd Uhle untersucht das Verhältnis von freiheitlichem Verfassungsstaat und kultureller Identität, das bislang kaum – wenn, dann lediglich partiell – erforscht wurde. Der Autor beleuchtet die Relevanz der kulturellen Identität für Entstehung, Gestalt und Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates aus verfassungstheoretischer, aus verfassungsrechtlicher und schließlich aus europarechtlicher Perspektive.Bereits aus verfassungstheoretischer Sicht ergibt sich dabei, daß die kulturelle Identität gleichermaßen Entstehungs- wie auch Geltungsbedingung freiheitlicher Verfassungsstaatlichkeit ist, weil der freiheitliche Staat in vielfältiger Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft. Eine Betrachtung aus verfassungsrechtlicher Perspektive unterstreicht diesen Befund und belegt, daß namentlich das deutsche Grundgesetz in einer prima facie zwar komplex und unüberschaubar erscheinenden, letztlich aber systematisch geordneten und differenzierenden Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft – und diese angesichts ihrer Bedeutung für den dauerhaften Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates überdies durch das in der Habilitationsschrift erstmals entfaltete grundgesetzliche Staatsziel der Vitalität und Dauerhaftigkeit der freiheitlichen Verfassungsordnung mit verfassungsrechtlichem Schutz umhegt. In der Konsequenz dieses Staatsziels ist der grundgesetzgebundene Staat zur Pflege und zum Schutz der kulturellen Identität verpflichtet. Eine abschließende europarechtliche Betrachtung verdeutlicht, daß die grundgesetzliche Anknüpfung an die kulturelle Identität wie auch deren verfassungsrechtliche Sicherung den Schutz des Art. 6 Abs.3 EUV genießen, der die Achtung der nationalen Identität anordnet.

During this time hundreds of thousands of Hutu were systematically hunted and killed. Surviving the slaughter : the ordeal of a Rwandan refugee in Zaire is the eyewitness account of Marie Béatrice Umutesi. She tells of life in the refugee camps in Zaire and her flight across 2000 kilometers on foot. During this forced march, far from the world's cameras, many Hutu refugees were trampled and murdered. Others died from hunger, exhaustion, and sickness, or simply vanished, ignored by the international community and betrayed by humanitarian organizations. Die Arbeit geht dabei der Frage nach, welche Faktoren die Entstehung nicht-demokratischer Strukturen in den russischen Regionen ermöglicht haben. Empirische Grundlage der Untersuchung ist eine ausführliche Fallstudie der Republik Baschkortostan, die als eines der autoritärsten regionalen Regime in Rußland gilt. Als Schlüssel zur Erklärung des politisch-institutionellen Wandels wird die Rolle informeller Institutionen (Netzwerke, Verpflichtungsbeziehungen) und überkommener Strukturen aus dem alten System herausgestellt. Die Arbeit wendet sich damit einem in der Transformations- und Demokratisierungsforschung bislang zu wenig beachteten Problem zu, das indes sowohl demokratietheoretisch als auch reformpolitisch von entscheidender Bedeutung ist: Wie ist es zu erklären, daß selbst dort, wo Demokratisierung das Gebot der Stunde zu sein scheint, bloß pseudodemokratische, ihrem Wesen nach eher autoritäre Regime nicht nur entstehen, sondern sich sogar konsolidieren können? Im Unterschied zu Deutungen, die Demokratiedefizite pauschal kulturellen Mängeln zuschreiben oder sich auf den deskriptiven Verweis auf Elitenkontinuität beschränken, rückt diese Arbeit funktionale Gründe für die Bestandsfähigkeit eines autoritär-patrimonialen Regimes in der Vordergrund. Pseudodemokratien, so die zentrale These, können durchaus stabil sein, sofern sie in Zeiten raschen sozialen Wandels für wesentliche Teile der Elite zur Reduktion von Unsicherheit beitragen und ihnen gegenüber leistungsfähig sind.
    Abstract: "Pseudo-Democracy in Russia" analyses the emergence of regional political institutions in Russia after 1990. The study aims to explain which factors were instrumental in bringing about non-democratic structures in the Russian regions. Empirically, the analysis is based on an in-depth case study of the Republic of Bashkortostan which is widely regarded as one of the most authoritarian regional regimes in Russia. As key to explaining the particular way political institutions changed, the study highlights the role of informal institutions (such as networks of mutual commitment) as well as structural legacies of the old system. It addresses an almost neglected problem of transition and democratisation research which, at the same time, is of great importance for both democratisation theory and the design of reform policies: How is it possible that in an environment where democratisation seems to be the order of the day pseudo-democratic regimes that have more in common with authoritarianism than with democracy can not only emerge but even consolidate? In contrast to interpretations which account democratic deficits wholesale to cultural deficiencies or refer rather generally to elite continuity, this study stresses functional reasons for the stability of an authoritarian patrimonial regime. The central argument is that pseudo-democracies can be stable if in times of rapid social change they contribute toward a reduction of uncertainty for significant parts of the elite and remain able to deliver benefits to them.

    Abstract: In January 1987, the Indian state-run television began broadcasting a Hindu epic in serial form, The Ramayana, to nationwide audiences, violating a decades-old taboo on religious partisanship. What resulted was the largest political campaign in post-independence times, around the symbol of Lord Ram, led by Hindu nationalists. The complexion of Indian politics was irrevocably changed thereafter. In this book, Arvind Rajagopal analyses this extraordinary series of events. While audiences may have thought they were harking back to an epic golden age, Hindu nationalist leaders were embracing the prospects of neoliberalism and globalisation. Television was the device that hinged these movements together, symbolising the new possibilities of politics, at once more inclusive and authoritarian. Simultaneously, this study examines how the larger historical context was woven into and changed the character of Hindu nationalism.

    Abstract: Emphasising a positive approach to dealing with terrorism (the carrot), this book provides a critique of deterrence policy (the stick) which can be ineffective and even counterproductive, and proposes three alternative and effective anti-terrorist policies: Decentralisation reduces vulnerability to terrorist attacks. A system with many different centres is more stable due to its diversity, enabling one part to substitute for another; Positive incentives can be offered to actual and prospective terrorists not to engage in violent acts. Incentives include: reintegrating terrorists into society, welcoming repentents and offering them valued opportunities; and Diverting attention by naming several terrorist groups potentially responsible for a particular terrorist act.     Abstract: Modernization in Africa has created new problems as well as new freedoms. Multiparty democracy, resource privatization and changing wealth relationships, have not always created stable and prosperous communities, and violence continues to be endemic in many areas of African life - from civil war and political strife to violent clashes between genders, generations, classes and ethnic groups. Violence and Belonging explores the crucial formative role of violence in shaping people's ideas of who they are in uncertain postcolonial contexts where, as resources dwindle and wealth is contested, identities and ideas of belonging become a focal area of conflict and negotiation. Focusing on fieldwork from across the continent, its case studies consider how routine everyday violence ties in with wider regional and political upheavals, and how individuals experience and legitimize violence in its different forms. The Zimbabwean and Sudanese civil wars, Kenyan Kikuyu domestic conflicts, Rwandan massacres and South African Truth and Reconciliation processes, are among the contexts explored.

    Abstract: Traditional social hypotheses have a built-in tendency to verify themselves and so involuntarily resist attempts at stereotype change or correction. This is the insight demonstrated and discussed as the start point for an alternative approach to the problem of stereotyping and hypothesis testing. Stereotyping as Inductive Hypothesis Testing explicates the proposition that many stereotypes originate not so much in individual brains, but in the stimulus environment that interacts with and constitutes the social individual. This cognitive-ecological approach is then used to analyse the different aspects of language, sign systems and communication that can implicitly govern hypothesis testing procedures and lead to circular or reinforcing outcomes. The authors describe factors in tests such as judgment, memory and expectation and go on to suggest viable ecological learning approaches to them. An original research project based on a classroom situation is used to demonstrate and verify findings. The cognitive-ecological approach is then contextualised in relation to both the traditional approaches it can replace and the contemporary statistical sampling practices it can improve. Written with a profound understanding of the link between theoretical rigour and good empirical research practice this monograph will be invaluable to anyone with an interest in stereotyping or who wishes to enhance the reliability and self-awareness of their research methods.

    Abstract: Racial discrimination embodies inequality, exclusion, and injustice and as such has no place in a democratic society. And yet racial matters pervade nearly every aspect of American life, influencing where we live, what schools we attend, the friends we make, the votes we cast, the opportunities we enjoy, and even the television shows we watch. Joel Olson contends that, given the history of slavery and segregation in the United States, American citizenship is a form of racial privilege in which whites are equal to each other but superior to everyone else. In Olson's analysis we see how the tension in this equation produces a passive form of democracy that discourages extensive participation in politics because it treats citizenship as an identity to possess rather than as a source of empowerment. Olson traces this tension and its disenfranchising effects from the colonial era to our own, demonstrating how, after the civil rights movement, whiteness has become less a form of standing and more a norm that cements white advantages in the ordinary operations of modern society. To break this pattern, Olson suggests an "abolitionist-democratic" political theory that makes the fight against racial discrimination a prerequisite for expanding democratic participation.
